FORUM continued on page 27
two million square feet of office space
across the state.
“In the political arena you can
parlay many opportunities,” said Boji.
“It is not just legislative issues and
what bills pass. It is understanding the
process. It is simple. It is sitting down
with people, understanding them,
working together and creating a win/
win situation. We created a niche in
our company that we pride ourselves
on — as an organization we are probably
one of the most profound development
companies in Michigan based
on private/public partnerships.”
The Boji Group recently won a
state senate bid and has numerous development
agreements across Michigan.
“It was that talk with Dennis
Muchmore that gave me the understanding
that what my father bought
for the family was not just a building;
it was a landmark opportunity.”
The panelists also discussed opportunities.
Each had stories to tell and
advice to share. However, they did not
fail to recognize attendees in the room
who have their own success stories.
“Preparedness is key,” said Kello.
“I graduated college and experienced
a lot of failures, and have learned how
to be prepared for when opportunity
presents itself.”
The Bank of Michigan created a
niche with Money Service Businesses
(MSB) when they realized other
banks were terminating their relationships
with stores that cash checks
and create money orders.
“We seized this opportunity and we
are the biggest bank in Michigan and
one of the biggest in the entire country
in the area of MSB,” Sarafa said.
For Ammori and team it has been
about complementing each other’s
strengths by having each partner
stick to what he does best.
“My brother Omar is a finance
guy. He is very methodical. Mark is a
certified public accountant. Kevin is
a bulldog in real estate. I move very
fast and focus on employee management
and customer service,” Ammori
said. “You also have to know when it
is time to hire. We did everything in
the beginning – sales, marketing and
human resources until we hit 50 stores
and the business began to struggle.”
Wireless hired professionals from
other corporations like Gap, Pottery
Barn and Pulte Homes to help run
the operations, which enabled them
to continue their growth.
Louie Boji decided years ago that
diversification was going to be the
Boji business model, which enables
them to be poised for opportunity as
well as handle economic downturns.
“It would take one heck of a tsunami
to hit all of our industries,” said
Ron Boji. “Diversification has proven
to work for us and our success has also
been because of our team. We created
a team where people have vested interests
in the business. It is also about
surrounding yourself with people who
are smarter than you but also knowing
how to lead. At the end of the day,
the buck stops with you.”
It was the evening’s moderator
who poignantly pointed out that although
experience, knowledge and
skills are vital for business success,
never discount a community and its
culture. “Culture eats strategy for
lunch all day,” said King.
