them as much as her own family and 

they consider her to be their mother. 

Then there was her friend who 

went to the Holy Land with her. 

They both wanted to get the cross 

tattoo on their wrist. As all the pilgrims 

waited in line, this particular 

friend was held back by her husband. 

He didn’t feel it was appropriate for 

a woman to get a tattoo. My mother 

talked to him in charity and in peace 

and explained how important it was 

to his wife to have the tattoo as a 

symbol and memory of their pilgrimage. 

She convinced him. 

At funerals and masses, she was 

often asked to lead the rosary and 

other prayers. People were moved by 

the conviction, love, mercy and passion 

in her voice. 

She visited the sick in their 

homes, in hospitals, in nursing homes 

or wherever she found out they were. 

My uncle and oldest brother encouraged 

my mother to learn to drive 

and learn the language – to become 

independent. At their encouragement, 

she was receptive. The priest 

would often see up to eight women 

getting out of her car after picking 

each one up individually to attend 

daily mass. They didn’t drive. 

Rarely did she enter a home without 

food in her hand. Always giving. 

Always sharing. 

When we looked through her 

prayer books, we discovered funeral 

cards of countless people whom she 

prayed for daily. 

In light of all these corporal and 

spiritual works of mercy, her vocation 

as a mother always came first. 

The love from her heart radiated in 

her perpetual smile. She brought us 

up to live in virtue, love and mercy. 

She valued Catholic education. She 

was deeply devoted to her husband, 

her children, her in-laws, her friends, 

and to the church. 

These are simply glimpses into 

Naima’s beautiful life. She received 

all her power from the Holy Spirit of 

our Lord, Jesus Christ. He equipped 

her with the charisms of mercy, faith, 

counsel, wisdom, teaching, communication, 

hospitality, evangelism, 

helps and encouragement to accomplish 

His work in the world. 

Naima leaves a rich, glorious 

legacy that was forever rooted and 

unfolded in love and humility.
