Humility as the source
of power: The life of
Naima Poota Bahoura
When we think of powerful women
in the world, immigrant
women with merely a fourthgrade
education typically don’t come to
mind. But my mother,
Naima Poota Bahoura,
was one of those powerful
women. When she
passed away October
2, 2015, the stories of
her impact poured in
from family, friends and
strangers.
Anyone who encountered
her was never SPECIAL TO THE
IKLAS J. BASHI
the same again.
CHALDEAN NEWS
When she was 20
years old, there was a man in her village
who was rejected by his family. When my
mother and grandmother saw how disheveled
and unclean he looked, they ministered
to him. His feet were cut and bled
because he had no sandals. They drew
water from the well, cleaned him, washed
his feet, and clothed him with my grandfather’s
clothes and shoes. They restored
him to dignity.
One woman told us that when she first
came to this country, my mother was the
first person to visit her. She came bearing
gifts: food, housewares, clothing and laundry
baskets.
One of my friends whose mother was diagnosed
with cancer said that my mother was
the first person to visit her in the hospital.
A man said he was healed of anger he
had been holding onto for decades. He sat
and prayed at my mother’s bedside. That
day, I was reading Scripture to her from Matthew
where Jesus instructs us not go to the
altar with our anger; to go reconcile with our
brother first and then come to the altar.
I found out from one of her best friends
that her devotion to the Blessed Mother
had not begun when she immigrated to the
United States in 1970 but started long before
that in her birthplace of Telkaif, Iraq.
She belonged to the Legion of Mary and to
the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for
over 64 years.
An elderly man I never knew before
stood at a distance from her bedside and
with tears in his eyes just shook his head
and said, “I have never in my life met another
woman like her.”
Then there were the countless couples
who were having marital difficulties and
family problems. When my mother was
called upon to intercede, she took her rosary,
prayer books and holy water and she
went to that home and didn’t leave – until
there was reconciliation and peace.
Her in-laws will tell you she loved
