‘krystle’-clear career
Softball, scholastics all add up for Krystle Shina

When it comes to athletics, academics and
aspirations, Krystle Shina has all the bases
covered.
Shina, a West Bloomfield resident, recently
completed her softball career at Madonna
University, where she ranks in the Crusaders’ alltime
top five for games played, at-bats, hits, doubles,
home runs and RBI. A four-year starter, she
was an all-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference
player and earned all-regional honors as well.
Not only did Shina shine on the diamond, she
was just as bright off the field. She graduated with
honors this spring, earning a Bachelor’s of Science
in accounting, and her grade-point average of 3.67
earned her several scholastic awards. Shina
received the university’s Ray Summers Scholar-
Athlete Award and was selected to the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-
American Scholar-Athlete Team.
A member of St. Thomas Catholic Chaldean
Church, she was also one of five college graduates
named “Athletes of the Year” at the Detroit
Catholic League’s Hall of Fame Banquet earlier this
summer. The honor is given to alumni of Catholic
League high schools who have excelled while continuing
their careers at the collegiate level.
Shina graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High
School in Farmington Hills, where she was an
honor roll student, captain of the 2001 softball
squad that won the Catholic League championship,
and helped lead the team to two appearances
in the final four of the state playoffs.
Shina is glad she decided to attend Madonna, an
independent, Catholic liberal arts university in
Livonia founded by the Felician Sisters order in 1947.
“I wanted to pursue softball and I saw that I was able
to go there and play,” she said. “I also wanted to study
business, so things worked out in my favor that way.”
Right off the bat, the first baseman was a key
member of the Crusaders squad. As a freshman,
Shina was the only member of her class to start
every game. In her junior and senior years, she
helped the team qualify for regional playoffs.
“When my class came in, the program started
turning around,” she said. “At least that what the
coaches told us.”
Although excelling in a number of categories
over four seasons, Shina downplayed her individual
accomplishments.
“I just enjoyed the experience,” she said. “I love
the intensity of the game. I’m really competitive
and I was fortunate to be able to play.”
Shina brings the same intensity to her occupational
goals. She aspires to be an accountant, and
plans to apply for graduate school in January, pursuing
a master’s degree and preparing for her certification.
In the meantime, she is working for Professional
Auditing Services of America in Bloomfield Hills.
“I decided I wanted to be an accountant right
when I started college,” Shina explained. “If you
