KARMO BUYS VIC’S QUALITY
FRUIT MARKET
Vic’s Quality Fruit Market, a landmark in Beverly Hills
for 18 years, has been sold to Johnny Karmo, the
owner of Market Square of Birmingham and Market
Square of Bloomfield.
Vic Ventimiglia , the former owner of Vic’s, said he
sold the store for a price Karmo described as “in the
millions” to move on from selling produce. Ventimiglia
said he plans to invest the money in an upscale
motorcycle shop, Great American Chopper, which is
to open for business in Clawson in September.
Karmo said he plans to change the name of the
market but not what it sells. The shop will be
renamed Market Fresh as soon as new signs
arrive. The store will undergo a major remodeling
in three or four months.

‘EMPOWERING’ GRANT
The Chaldean American Ladies of Charity has been
awarded grant funding from the Oakland County
Health Division for a unique initiative involving girls
and their mothers.
The “Empowered Voices” program aims to
strengthen bonds between adolescent and preadolescent
Chaldean girls and their mothers. The ninemonth
program focuses on girls’ development,
including improving and maintaining high-self esteem,
strengthening the relationship among girls and

CALC SEEKS MENTORS
The CALC Summer Program Project CAN START is
in need of volunteer mentors.
“I cannot stress how desperate these youth are in
need of mentors,” said Jane Shallal. “They live in a
poor part of town surrounded by violence, abandoned
and burned-down homes and extreme litter. They are
affected greatly by these negative influences.”
The program has 14 girls and 16 boys ages 10-14
in need of mentors from August-October. Mentors
