NOTEworthy FESTIVE NIGHT Chaldeans gathered in June at Shenandoah Country Club for NGC’s Fashion Rock 2005. Guests watched as models strut their stuff with designs provided by Dolce Moda, Dolce Vita, 110 Couture and C’est La Vie. Hair and make-up was provided by Alex/Emilo and 6 Salon. Local Chaldean DJ Vince and DJ Flex mixed it up for the crowd during and after the showing for a cash prize while local Chaldean comedian Brandon Shaya kept the mood light. Event Chairperson Tania Kasgorgis reported that Wireless Toyz donated $10,000 to the event to go toward the Chaldean Cultural Center. PHOTOS BY LENA ANTOON KAKOS RUNS FOR SOUTHFIELD COUNCIL Longtime resident Robert Kakos is running for a seat on the Southfield City Council. Kakos said he has three principle aims in his campaign: Support for the police and fire departments; reduction of property taxes; and improved communication within city government and between the government and the citizens. Kakos is a veteran of the Marine Corps who earned numerous medal and meritorious awards. He said he is concerned with the policy of attrition within Southfield’s police department. Currently, Kakos said, many of the spots that are created when an officer retires or leaves the force remain vacant, with the result of a reduced police presence. Reversing this trend is a campaign theme. Kakos also advocates lower property taxes and making the city government and its departments more efficient. KARMO BUYS VIC’S QUALITY FRUIT MARKET Vic’s Quality Fruit Market, a landmark in Beverly Hills for 18 years, has been sold to Johnny Karmo, the owner of Market Square of Birmingham and Market Square of Bloomfield. Vic Ventimiglia , the former owner of Vic’s, said he sold the store for a price Karmo described as “in the millions” to move on from selling produce. Ventimiglia said he plans to invest the money in an upscale motorcycle shop, Great American Chopper, which is to open for business in Clawson in September. Karmo said he plans to change the name of the market but not what it sells. The shop will be renamed Market Fresh as soon as new signs arrive. The store will undergo a major remodeling in three or four months. CALC SCORES ‘EMPOWERING’ GRANT The Chaldean American Ladies of Charity has been awarded grant funding from the Oakland County Health Division for a unique initiative involving girls and their mothers. The “Empowered Voices” program aims to strengthen bonds between adolescent and preadolescent Chaldean girls and their mothers. The ninemonth program focuses on girls’ development, including improving and maintaining high-self esteem, strengthening the relationship among girls and Matt Jonna, president of MJM Group and Plum Market, plans on building a 40-000- square-foot natural and specialty super market at The Shops at Main North in Royal Oak. “It’s like Whole Foods meets Merchant of Vino,” he said. “We think it’ll be the store of the future. In fact, we plan to build a national chain.” between girls and women, and building critical thinking, problem-solving, and other skills. CALC SEEKS MENTORS The CALC Summer Program Project CAN START is in need of volunteer mentors. “I cannot stress how desperate these youth are in need of mentors,” said Jane Shallal. “They live in a poor part of town surrounded by violence, abandoned and burned-down homes and extreme litter. They are affected greatly by these negative influences.” The program has 14 girls and 16 boys ages 10-14 in need of mentors from August-October. Mentors CHALDEAN CONNECTION XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ are among several Chaldeans involved in a new Royal Oak project, Main North Terraces, being built at 201 E. 11 Mile Road. Architect Victor Saroki designed the project, and Matt Jonna will open the Plum Market, a gourmet grocery store on site.Main North Terraces, a project of Joseph Freed Homes, will consist of 176 condo units plus the grocery and fitness center. The first phase of the Main Street North community featured 94 units of which more than 80 are already sold. should commit to spending a minimum of four to six hours each month with their student in both group activites and one on one. Suggested activities include job shadowing, talking, tutoring and attending recreational and/or cultural activities. “The goal is to provide experiences that the student’s usual environment does not provide.
