A Matter of Race
I read the Chaldean News religiously
and keep every issue because I realize
that this is a huge step forward for the
Chaldeans of this community. I
applaud your hard work and all the
effort you put into sending out this
newspaper. I know how much time is
put into trying to create something that
you hope will satisfy everyone who
reads it, because I used to be the editor
of my high school yearbook a few
years ago and it was one of the biggest
challenges I ever had to tackle.
I have a question. I’m a 19-year-old
Chaldean girl and I’m trying to successfully
complete my undergrad years of
college. Throughout my whole life I have
filled out several forms, many of which
ask for my race. I have never really
known what to put down for that category.
Obviously, I’m not black, Hispanic,
Pacific Islander, Native American or
Alaskan. Now that leaves Asian, white
and other. People from China, Indian
and Japan are considered Asian, not
Chaldeans. Several people have told me
to mark the White/Caucasian box. We
all know there exists a huge distinction
between the two ethnicity-wise, however,
I’ve never really been able to figure
out what category I fall under. Should I
always mark Other, because Middle
Easterners should have their own separate
category since we are treated differently
from whites?
Editor’s Note: Evette brings up an interesting
question. What race do you check off
on forms? Visit our website,
www.chaldeannews.com, to vote. We’ll
report the results in our September issue.
Raising Readers
We applaud Brenda Acho Gappy’s article,
“Get Your Kids Reading This
Summer!” in the July 2005 issue. School
may be out, but reading is always in season.
Ms. Acho Gappy is absolutely correct
when she states that parents are a
child’s very first teacher and that reading
to a child is one of the most important
things a parent can do to ensure their
child’s success in school.
The West Bloomfield Township
Public Library is committed to partnering
with parents to nurture a love of
reading and to develop literacy skills.
We have developed many high-quality
resources for parents and caregivers.
Our extremely popular summer reading
club, “Investigate Summer Reading @
the Library,” has 1,819 participants this
summer and growing.
The Youth Services rooms at our Main
Library and West Acres Branch are exciting
planes that encourage reading, learning
and discovery. Our Youth Services
librarians are trained in literacy skills and
are available to help parents and children
make excellent choices in all sorts of reading
materials. In addition, we offer a wide
variety of programs for children and their
parents that promote literacy.
All of the public libraries in our area
offer similar services to their communities.
The library has also developed a
website, www.growupreading.org, to
provide ideas, resources and support
to parents. Parents, schools and the
library should work together to raise a
community of readers.
