editorinchief | LETTER
The color white is rich with symbolism: fresh, pure, clean.
No wonder it has long been associated with kitchens and bathrooms. To some, though,
it can be cold, sterile and boring. That duality of opinion may be why white rooms — or
more specifically all-white rooms — go in and out of fashion.
To be sure, white is classic and will always have a respected place in the world of
interior design. But the pendulum is swinging away from totally white rooms. The
projects featured in this issue are a case in point. The Mountainside bathroom in the
cover story features a woodland-theme wallcovering that feels like an extension of the
forest visible through the windows. Designer Elizabeth Guest had always wanted to
use the wall covering, and a move back to the home where she grew up provided the
opportunity (“Woodland Chic,” page 58).
A bathroom in the Woodcliff Lake home of Artistic Tile President Lauren Cherkas
sparkles with glass tile in an ombré pattern that is deep blue gray at the ceiling and
gradually lightens to white (“Fabulous Fade,” page 54). Meanwhile, white rift-oak
paneling with a deep custom stain establishes a warm backdrop for honed marble tile and
mixed metal accents in a Westfield bathroom remodeled by designer Ellie Mroz (“Classic Refresh,” page 61).
Even when white is a primary color these days, it’s often a warm shade, like the heavily figured marble in
a Westfield bathroom/wet room by Noa Blake Design (“Guiding Light,” page 57). Or it’s combined with
another prominent color, like in a black and white Monmouth County bathroom where designer Sheila Rich
skillfully combined Victorian and edgy elements (“Special Effects,” page 62).
Speaking of designers, you may have noticed the words “American Society of Interior Designers” or the
letters “ASID” after a designer’s name in Design NJ articles and wondered why we consider it important to
include. ASID is a nationwide organization that advances the interior design profession, and its New Jersey
chapter is particularly active. What does that mean to you as a homeowner? ASID members must abide
by a Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. They have to meet education and experience requirements.
They also must participate in continuing education classes to keep abreast of topics that range from code
requirements and ADA compliance to sustainability and beyond. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Three
members of the New Jersey chapter — Diane Durocher, Denise Jones and Marina V. Umali — share their
thoughts on how homeowners can benefit from hiring an ASID designer (“Tools of the Trade,” page 28).
Also in this issue, we take you inside a Monmouth County home where designer William McIntosh
established a sophisticated aesthetic inspired by extensive world travels by himself and his clients (“International
Intrigue,” page 34). In Chatham, see how designer Swati Goorha transformed a kitchen and family room by
rethinking the layout and adding layers of charm (“Personality Plus,” 46).
If your outdoor space needs a little freshening, check out the resort-like ambience that Jennifer Pacca, CLC
Landscape Design and S Scott Construction created at an Upper Saddle River home (“Backyard Escape,”
50). And don’t forget to browse the Shop section showcasing products with a summery coastal vibe (“Catch a
Wave,” page 22) and our favorite new products for the bathroom (“Clean Conscience,” page 26).
As we head into the last weeks of summer, we hope you’ll take us with you for reading at the beach, in
the backyard or in the air-conditioned comfort of your favorite room — be it all white or not.
Three designers discuss how ASID affiliation helps them serve their clients
WRITTEN BY MARIROSE KRALL
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the nation’s
premier interior design trade association. We spoke with three
members of the New Jersey chapter for their thoughts on how the association
offers maximum benefits to homeowners.
BUSINESS ACUMEN
It’s hard to put in words just how much value an ASID designer can bring
to a homeowner’s project. There are so many reasons to choose an ASIDaffiliated
designer. When a homeowner hires an ASID member they, of
course, get a professional who’s educated in design, but they’re getting
much more than design expertise. ASID designers are trained in a variety
of fields in addition to design, and one of the most important areas of
education is in how to run a business.
The organization offers courses in various aspects of founding and
growing a business. We, as a chapter, continually provide our members
with learning opportunities on these topics throughout the year so their
clients know the designer they hired has the acumen to run an efficient,
successful business and can maximize their projects at the best cost.
In addition, every member abides by a code of ethical conduct. With
everything we do, it’s all about the protection of the homeowner.
A WIDE RANGE OF KNOWLEDGE
I feel that ASID membership separates us from the amateurs, though that’s not
to say there aren’t other professional interior design organizations that require
and promote education as well. A homeowner investing in their home design —
whether it is simply an update of a single space or a newly built home — can
only benefit from having an ASID-affiliated designer as part of their team.
We answer to a higher standard in our industry. ASID designers are mandated to
take a certain number of CEUs (continuing education credits) that pertain to the
health, safety and welfare of the general public and, as such, they bring a wealth of
knowledge to every project. We pride ourselves on staying up to date with not only
the latest design trends but also the most sustainable and universal alternatives.
So homeowners can be confident knowing that their ASID-affiliated designer is
knowledgeable about vital topics. In addition, clients can also be assured their
designer has a network of experienced industry partners and colleagues with whom
to consult. ASID has given me the tools to be a better designer, businessowner and
leader. A homeowner can feel confident that, by engaging an ASID designer, they
will be working with a highly knowledgeable professional.
A HOLISTIC VISION
If a designer has the ASID appellation, homeowners know they
are dealing with a highly qualified professional. Design is a
diverse career path encompassing widely divergent disciplines.
It can range from staging theatrical performances to observing a groundbreaking.
Some designers concentrate on decorative features, others focus on the built
environment. So it’s important to understand how to get the right expertise for
specific needs.
The ASID certification denotes that a designer has been educated in code
requirements and ADA compliance and has the ability to guide you or refer you
to skilled tech, engineering and trade professionals. Our job is to help you navigate
Denise Jones believes a collaborative experience is one of the most important parts of a design project.
a project with the right professionals on your team. We’re aware there are things
beyond the four walls that need to be considered. For instance, I refer to myself as
a preconstruction planner. I’m the “air traffic controller” and a part of the process
from the ground up. I walk alongside the “CEO” of the home and help them
embark upon their project and ensure that it’s executed well.
ASID’s motto is “design impacts lives” — driving home the point that interior design
is not just about aesthetics. It’s also about creating a well-thought-out environment
that helps mental and physical well-being and promotes a fulfilling life.
‘It
was a ‘tear-it-down-to-the-bones’ kind of project,” says William
McIntosh, principal of Manhattan-based William McIntosh
Design. He and partner and creative director Martin Raffone, a color
and materials specialist and stylist, created a sophisticated aesthetic,
inside and out, that was inspired by extensive world travels — both his
and the clients’.
DESIGN NEW JERSEY: You call the style of this house Italian Renaissance
Revival. What elements of that style can be seen here?
WILLIAM MCINTOSH: The most prominent design element is the
arcade across the front façade at the porch level, which involves a series
of simplified columns. The bracketed eave line is also very much an
Italianate detail, as is the stucco exterior. The hip roof covered in clay
“The architect of record, Robert Adler, is a great guy,” says
designer William McIntosh, who handled architectural and
interior design for this project. “He’s local to the area and he
was invaluable as far as the structural heavy lifting and the
permits process. He’s a great collaborator.”
BEFORE
designnewjersey.com 35

The home’s back patio features
a pergola-covered sitting area. A
12-by-24-foot lap pool (left) hits the
spot on a sultry summer day.
The kitchen is outfitted in white
oak cabinetry and Moroccan tile.

“The dining table is a design of ours,” McIntosh says of the cast-concrete-topped piece,
which features caster legs for ease of movement. “The chairs are Chandigarh chairs
designed by Pierre Jeanneret for government buildings in Chandigarh, India, in the
1950s. They’re stained mahogany with woven cane seats and backs. The two closets
and the door leading to the kitchen (with the round window) feature antiqued black
hardware that adds a dressed-down feel that’s more country than city.
The pitched ceiling above the entry hall is clad in wood and features a lantern visible
through the steel-and-glass windows of the upper hallway.
tile is another nod to the style’s Mediterranean roots. In addition, there’s
a three-part colonnade above the main entry archway. It’s super stylized,
and doing it in marble — which was very common in Italian Renaissance
architecture — adds a certain richness to it.
DNJ: How did the topography of the lot and the style of the home inform the
landscape design?
WM: The house sits very high above the street — about 10 or 12 feet.
Because of that, the project involved grading the site to transform it from
a steep incline to a softer, tiered slope. We then installed a 2-foot retaining
wall at the sidewalk and a series of steps and landings corresponding to
the tiers of the lawn to produce a more dramatic entrance.
designnewjersey.com 37

stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
Arched glass doorways in the living room lead to the rear yard, pool and terrace.
The homeowners requested a banquette in the lounge where they could sit for food and cocktails. “Everybody loves a banquette,” McIntosh says.
“That’s what this room is about, everyone gathering.”
As far as the actual plantings, we chose items to complement the look of
the house. We selected the evergreens on either side of the front entrance
because they are similar to Italian Cyprus trees, which would not do well
in the Northeast United States.
DNJ: How did you alter the interior layout within the original footprint?
WM: Essentially, we rebuilt the entire house. We were required to
maintain the massing of the structure, but we took the house down
to the studs and completely reconfigured the interior. We raised the
ceiling height on the first floor by 30 inches and raised the roof 30
inches. We lined up the main living spaces — living room, dining
room and lounge — along the rear of the house. The kitchen was
relocated from the rear to the front and is now adjacent to a dining
terrace where the clients enjoy having breakfast outdoors. The center
entry foyer was redesigned as a two-story space with the staircase
winding behind the walls around three sides to the second-floor
hallway. The steel-and-glass windows in the stairwell and landings
look down to the entry.
38 August/September 2023

DNJ: What was the inspiration for the ceiling treatments found throughout
the first floor?
WM: If you were in any great old house in the countryside of France or Italy,
you’d see exposed beams on the ceiling. It’s the structure of the house that
you’re seeing, and it gives the house character. It adds a nice warmth and a
material element to the spaces as well, as opposed to a Sheetrock ceiling.
DNJ: How do the additional wood accents, which figure prominently
throughout the interiors, reinforce the multicultural aesthetic?
WM: The white oak elements are a nod to components found in the
architecture in various countries. The dining room, for instance, is
punctuated with decorative elements that not only reiterate the look of
the wood beams found on the ceiling but also have significance on their
own. The return air vents near the ceiling are reminiscent of a Roman
grille or Moroccan Mashrabiya turned-wood lattices.
DNJ: What is the interior aesthetic?
WM: The interiors are an amalgam of many influences drawn from
stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
“I’ve got a thing for portholes,” McIntosh says of the
window in the primary bathroom. “They show up in just
about everything I do.” The wall, which is about 20 inches
deep, needed to be built out for the plumbing. “We took
advantage of that depth for perspective.”
everything that I know about Italian, French and
Moroccan historical architecture. The house features
many elements inspired by my travels. For instance,
I’ve spent a lot of time in Morocco — we had a
house in Marrakesh. So we brought in Moroccan
tile for the kitchen floor and backsplash. The range
hood is glazed Moroccan Zellige tile. It’s hand cut
into those sizes, which makes it very irregular and
gives it a rustic quality.
DNJ: How did your relationship with the homeowners
contribute to the success of this project?
WM: This renovation was a big project for them, but
we’ve worked with this family many times. We’ve
seen their kids grow up. It’s nice to work with people
over a 20-year period. We understand their needs
and wants, and they understand our process. They
travel often, like I do, so we were very much on the
same page. It’s great when you can share references
in conversation. That makes the project flow very
smoothly. DNJ
One of the distinguishing
features is the blue ombré
backsplash on the range
wall and behind a new
cabinet that bridges the
kitchen and family room.
What began as an effort to refresh a dated Chatham kitchen
turned into a redesign that not only modernized the
kitchen and adjacent family room but also infused both
spaces with function and character.
The homeowners at first worked with a kitchen cabinet company but
then decided they wanted a more design-oriented approach for the entire
space. After searching online, they reached out to Swati Goorha of Swati
Goorha Designs in New Providence. “By the time we got onboard, the
cabinets had already been ordered,” Goorha says. “Our assignment was to
redesign the family room and add personality to the kitchen.”
To complement the deep blue and white cabinetry and to break
up the quartz slab backsplash, Goorha added an eye-catching fan-
patterned blue ombré glass tile with brass trim above the range. She
also introduced limewash paint on the walls to add depth and texture.
The island in the center of the approximately 15-by-17-foot kitchen
provides a convenient spot for the empty-nester homeowners to share
an informal meal and also for their adult children or friends to hang out
when they visit.
On one wall, a cased opening between the kitchen and family room
gave way to a serving and storage cabinet that echoes the style and colors
of the other kitchen cabinetry, except it has glass-front upper doors and
a wood countertop. It also repeats the fan-motif mosaic tile backsplash.
The unit turns the corner into the family room with a slim but efficient
coffee station and beverage refrigerator.
Personality Plus
A DATED KITCHEN AND AWKWARD FAMILY ROOM
ARE REDESIGNED WITH SPIRIT AND STYLE
Although the kitchen and adjacent family room are open to each other,
they used to feel disconnected because a sofa positioned to face a large
television had its back to the kitchen. The sofa and chairs were covered in
muted solid colors that made the space look a little flat. A wood stove got
lost in a corner by itself.
“We had to come up with a creative solution for space planning to
add more seating, make the layout open so the kitchen and family room
flow from one space to the other, and add a television in such a way that
it can be seen from the kitchen and the family room,” Goorha says. She
started by closing up a little-used door to the dining room on one wall
and relocated the television there. The television is on an articulating
arm so it can be positioned for easier viewing from any angle. “It is easily
accessible when in use but also out of sight when not,” Goorha notes.
She designed a narrow, wall-mounted console for under the television to
house electronic components.
To allow for more seating and add more pattern and color, Goorha
chose a sectional sofa that wraps the wall that formerly held the television
and a perpendicular wall with a large window. She added swivel chairs in
a fun print and with low backs so they don’t obstruct the television. A
large blue and chocolate leather ottoman with nailhead trim provides a
convenient spot to rest feet or stow the latest best-selling novels.
The colors of the upholstery and pillows complement those in the
kitchen, while the art above the sofa further brightens the space with an
interesting splash of color. As it does in the kitchen, a limewash treatment
designnewjersey.com 47

A colorful new sectional sofa hugs the
wall that formerly held a big television.
It replaces a smaller sofa that used to
face the wall with its back to the kitchen,
effectively separating the two areas.
The designer closed up a little-used
secondary door to the dining room so
she could move the television to this
wall. It’s on an articulating arm that
allows the homeowners to position it
for viewing from the family room or the
kitchen. She designed the wall-mounted
console to hold electronic components.
on the walls adds depth and texture. A sculptural pyramid side table at
one end of the sectional sofa adds function without being bulky, while a
table on the opposite end provides storage. A simple but stunning floor
lamp adds light and height, while the rug ties the seating area together
and is easy to clean and maintain.
With the project now complete, the owners enjoy entertaining as well
as relaxing and watching television in the space. DNJ
The heated pavilion boasts a stone
woodburning fireplace, knotted-pinecovered
furnishings and accents that rival indoorquality
comfort and style. Colors derived
from the stone — in a combination of earthy
gray and warm golden hues — inspired the
room’s color palette, designer Jennifer Pacca
says. Textured woven chairs and a stone
cocktail table “balance the heavily textured
stone of the fireplace,” she adds.
settings that weather the elements. The outdoor kitchen — equipped with
such features as a large grill, sink, refrigerator and granite-topped island —
“perfectly suits the owners’ entertaining needs,” Pacca says. A built-in,
stone-encased pizza oven area completes the gourmet kitchen experience.
“My husband, Eric, loved the idea of making pizza and having kids
join in on the fun,” Mylson says. While his first year of making pizza “was
humbling, for sure … he’s very excited for year two!”
The same stone used to construct the pizza oven reappears in the
covered pavilion’s woodburning fireplace. “This helps unify the spaces and
pull the color palette through the entire outdoor area,” Pacca explains.
The pavilion is a great place to curl up by the fire or catch a game on
television, and it’s heated so the owners can use it late into fall, she says.
A separate seating area sheltered by a large umbrella doubles as an ideal
gathering spot for the entire family or as a quiet place to work from home.
homeowners can cook, prep
and mingle in the outdoor
kitchen, Pacca says. The granite
countertop and stainless-steel
cabinets are “super durable to
weather the elements.” A large
outdoor grill, sink, refrigerator
and pizza oven — flanked by
additional stone surfaces for
pizza prep — round out the
gourmet kitchen vibe.
The client’s love of neutral colors influenced the design scheme’s black,
white and tan palette. “It’s an ultra-sophisticated counterpoint” to all the
greenery of the landscaping and raw materials of the outdoor kitchen,
Pacca says. The organic, architectural shapes of the furniture help define
each space, coupled with resilient stone cocktail tables and chunky
woven lounge chairs that add texture. Teak “adds just the right amount of
warmth to the black-and-white scheme,” Pacca says.
All the attention to detail translates to happy clients. “We designed
our backyard to not only expand our living space and create a relaxing
and beautiful environment to entertain friends and family, but also to
bring the feeling of being away to our home,” Mylson says. “During the
spring and summer, we spend most of our nights outside using the pizza
oven, the barbecue and especially the living room in the pavilion to watch
movies and shows together as a family.” DNJ
DESIGN BY LAUREN CHERKAS
‘W
e wanted a modern, cool, transitional
space,” Lauren Cherkas says
of the Jack-and-Jill bathroom
adjacent to her son’s room. “It
was important that we included color, but we
were interested in having an aesthetic that wasn’t
directed toward a little boy. It was important that
our son could grow up in the space and appreciate
it more as he gets older.”
To achieve that look, Cherkas, president of
Secaucus-based Artistic Tile, swathed the room
with ombré-effect glass tile, but she decided to
modify the standard motif. “The original version
of this tile has a lot of repetition. Instead of
repeating the pattern down the wall, we decided
to make it very bold on top and then white to the
ground. We knew it would fulfill his needs better.”
The result is a striking color shift from deep gray
to white with a buffer of gradually lightening tiles
between the two.
Though it’s gray, the deep-toned tile at the
top of the wall “reads” blue, Cherkas explains.
“So we paired it with a blue vanity.” The
floating vanity, featuring brass hardware that
coordinates with the faucets and the sconce
accents, brought unforeseen benefits. “We are
a very clumsy family,” she says, laughing. “We
drop a lot of things that roll under the vanity.
Having a wall-mounted vanity that doesn’t
touch the floor makes it easy to pick things up.
“It’s sophisticated yet fun,” Lauren Cherkas says of the
bathroom featuring an ombré tile pattern.
“This project proved to me that ‘more is more.’
So many people would use this tile on a single
feature wall. In this room, we’re surrounded and
it’s fabulous,” Cherkas says. “I’m glad I chose to
tile floor-to-ceiling on all four walls.”
“IT’S OUR HAPPY PLACE.
EVERYONE LOVES
WALKING THROUGH
THAT BATHROOM.”
— LAUREN CHERKAS
I’m really glad we did that. I didn’t realize it would be such a benefit.”
The family also didn’t realize how much they would appreciate this room.
“It’s our happy place. Everyone loves walking through that bathroom.”
“Everyone” includes a great-grandmother who often stays in the guest
room that forms the third space in the Jack-and-Jill configuration.
“We wanted something that, quite literally, spanned generations from
a preteen boy to his 100-year-old great-grandmother. When she walked
in, she was stunned. She said ‘look at this beautiful bathroom that you
gave me!’ I knew immediately we had nailed it.” DNJ
Guiding Light
A WESTFIELD
BATHROOM LETS
THE SUNSHINE IN
The wet room’s glass enclosure allows natural light from
the south-facing window to reach the entire room. An
automatic shade on the window ensures privacy.
The primary bathroom in Anjulika and Alvin Saini’s home is situated
at the front of the house, and the couple wanted to take
advantage of its southern exposure. “It gets great light,” Anjulika Saini says.
“We didn’t want to block that light with a standard layout.” So they, along
with designers Ariel Fischer and Malorie Goldberg of Marlboro-based Noa
Blake Design, decided to incorporate a wet room into the space.
“There is a very large window right in the center that had to stay as
such to maintain balance on the exterior,” Fischer explains. “We decided
to build a wet room around it so we could merge both form and function
in a way that felt open and airy but still like personal space.”
In addition to abundant illumination, the owners wanted their personal
space to have a Zen-like quality. “We wanted a really organic, natural, spalike
feel,” Saini says. Goldberg adds, “We wanted the room to feel fresh
and calming but also have a warmth that
you don’t always get from clean, modern
spaces. The overall tone was meant to be a
juxtaposition between casual and rich.”
That combination is reflected in the choice
of tile. “We used marble throughout to create
richness,” Fischer notes, “but we chose stone
with warmer tones so it feels light, bright
and comfortable.” The tile is one of the
homeowner’s favorite things about the space.
“I like the way it transitions from the floor all
the way up the wall,” Saini says. “It’s very fluid.”
The room is accessorized with elements
that underscore the modern, comfortable
aesthetic. “The antiqued brass in the plumbing
and hardware plays into a soft, inviting
sensibility with just a touch of glamour,”
Goldberg says. A light fixture above the
vanity adds unexpected drama. “The incredible
metal-fringe-clad sconce carries
the entire vanity wall on its own.” Saini
agrees: “It’s an art piece. It’s fantastic.” The
custom mirrors flanking the sconce were at
the request of the homeowners. “We knew
we wanted the dual vanity. I really liked the
idea of having individual mirrors over each
sink. I did not want to go with one standard
mirror.” The mirrors are a particular favorite
of Fischer’s. “Their dimensions are 20 by 60 inches, which makes them
incredibly dramatic despite being so simple.”
The vertical lines of the mirrors, the sconce and the fluting on the
vanity emphasize the 10-foot-high ceilings, reinforcing the feeling of
space and openness. “With those mirrors and the glass walls on the wet
room, we made an average-size bathroom seem larger,” Saini says. “We
optimized every ounce of space.” DNJ
Just like the greening of trees signals rebirth each spring, so does
the mural wallpaper in this primary bathroom represent a new
beginning for a home in Mountainside. The wallpaper captures
forest scenes that echo the woodlands visible through the
windows of the home, which interior designer Elizabeth Guest’s parents
built in the 1970s.
Guest grew up in the home and returned frequently for visits after
moving to Hunterdon County to raise her family and launch her business,
Elizabeth Guest Interiors LLC. Her mother loved the home and, over the
years, encouraged Guest to think about moving back someday. But the
home had so much of her mother’s tastes and spirit that Guest couldn’t
envision living there again.
That changed a few years ago when her mother passed away after a brief
illness around the same time that Guest began to think her own nowempty
nest was too large for just one person. With the encouragement
of her family, she looked at her mother’s house through a new lens and
Old and new mingle harmoniously in the
antique Dutch marquetry dressing table and
the modern mirrored chest.
decided she could, indeed, honor its heritage while making it her own.
A two-year, top-to-bottom redesign included a reassignment of space
on the second floor. Her mother’s bedroom became a spacious primary
bathroom with an expanded closet, spaces for a shower and a water closet
on one wall, and a bathtub between two windows on the opposite wall.
Wrapping it all is the “Arcadia” mural wallpaper from Iksel Decorative
Arts, an international brand with offices in Istanbul and London and
available in the United States through Schumacher.
“I’ve always wanted to use Iksel wallpaper,” Guest says. “This bathroom
was the perfect place for it because the room looks out onto woodland that
is part of the New Jersey Green Acres Program. When you walk into the
bathroom, it looks like the trees in the wallpaper keep going to the outside.”
The wallpaper was not without challenges. Guest spent an entire Saturday
measuring the room, not only the height and width of each wall, but also
the doors, windows and space between the windows down to the quarter
inch. She sent the elevations to Iksel in Turkey, and the company’s experts
planned the layout. The wallpaper series that Guest chose has 36 panels and,
because it’s a continuous scene, she couldn’t randomly pick certain panels.
She knew she wanted a panel that pictures a pond to be placed directly
behind the bathtub, and the rest of the panels flow from there. “It worked
out really well because parts of the scene that were mostly just brown hills
and roads fell behind a mirror or over a window and were cut out.”
The designer framed the wallpaper with crown, base and window
molding painted deep green. She originally considered a white tile floor
but then decided to refinish the existing wood floor and strategically
placed rugs to protect it from water. To brighten the room, she chose a
white oval tub and white vanity with a large mirror flanked by silvery
sconces with white shades. On the opposite side of the room is an antique
Dutch marquetry dressing table, a bench and a mirror, all of which Guest
acquired years ago while working at Sotheby’s. She also added a mirrored
chest that sits against the water closet wall, creating a subtle shimmer while
reflecting the wallpaper. Above the chest is a custom stained-glass window
that channels daylight from the water closet to the rest of the room.
Guest credits Richard Barr of Plumberry Designs for helping with the
details of the cabinetry and the logistics of the room’s layout.
The finishing touch — literally the last thing she added to the room — is
a mirror with an antiqued gold finish that hangs sun-like over the bathtub.
“It was the perfect punctuation point for this room,” Guest says. DNJ
Classic Refresh
EYE-CATCHING
WOODWORK AND
A FIRST-FLOOR
BATHROOM
Designer Ellie Mroz aimed to create “a
refined, classic, luxe space” for her
clients’ full-bathroom renovation, a
look that’s in line with the rest of the Westfield
home’s aesthetic, she says.
Classic mixed metals and natural materials such
as marble and wood achieved the desired effect, says
Mroz, principal of Ellie Mroz Design in Westfield.
White rift oak paneling with a custom stain and
flat poly finish establishes a warm backdrop for
the harder surfaces, including the stone mosaic
flooring that runs into the walk-in shower. The
shower walls — reflected in the mirror in the
photo — are covered in white honed marble.
Says Mroz: “We fell in love with the sink: the
‘Henry’ two-leg washstand from Waterworks,”
which contains a lower shelf for storage. As for
the use of mixed metals, “We definitely like
combining metals for interest, especially classic
metals like antiqued brass and nickel, in a refined
space like this.” But they should be grounded,
she says. For instance, “the sconces tie in with the
mirror, while the vanity legs tie in with the rest of
the bathroom hardware.”
The bathroom is located adjacent to the mudroom,
near the family room and just off the
entrance to an outdoor pool and entertaining
area. “It’s convenient for homeowners and guests
whether they be inside or outside,” Mroz says. DNJ
lightened by the
A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF
STRIKING ELEMENTS MAKES
UP THIS MONMOUTH COUNTY
PRIMARY BATHROOM
The words “edgy” and “Victorian” tend not to be used together,
but both of those adjectives could describe elements of this
primary bathroom in Monmouth County. “The house is contemporary,”
says designer Sheila Rich, of Monmouth The bathtub Beach-based area features Sheila a row Rich of small Interiors.
“But when I went shopping with windows the near client, the she ceiling. fell “They in love provide with the
And make it work, they did. says. The “They bathtub also provide in question treetop is views a claw-foot
beauty resting on monarch feet and — didn’t with require a shape window well treatments.” known from its
Victorian predecessors. The tub’s black exterior is what makes it special,
and what made it exactly the right choice for this bathroom. “The clients
love black and white,” Rich says. “Everything else in the house, except for
the children’s rooms, is black and white.”
The bathtub isn’t the only history-inspired element in the room. “The
floor has an Old World look,” says Rich, a state-certified interior designer
Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist and member of the American Society
of Interior Designers and International Interior Design Association.
“Floors like this used to be made from cement. These are porcelain
copies of cement tiles.” The dramatic design of the tile required that
other fixtures be carefully considered. “We had to work around that floor
because it makes a very big statement.”
In contrast to the floor tile, the walls in the bath and shower area
are a shingle shade: white. But the wall tiles are not without their own
distinguishing features. Rich wanted the walls to be just as distinctive as
the floor, without clashing. “I was looking for something that was not
going to fade into oblivion,” she says. The solution was tile featuring
raised, undulating lines. “When you touch it, you can feel the waves.”
The white wall tile wraps around the space until it gets to the dual
vanities, which are on opposite walls. There, the wall tile meets the black
Brass inserts frame the black tile behind the vanity to create a smooth transition between the
white tile, with its markedly raised lines, and the black tile, which has subtler texturing. The vanities
are stained, rather than lacquered, which allows the grain to show through. “They have their own
personalities,” Rich says. “They needed to be important without screaming out.”
tile of the vanity backsplashes. “The two tiles have to marry,” Rich says,
“but I didn’t want the black tile to be boring, so we opted for tone on tone
with a little texture. It doesn’t compete with the white, but it holds its own.”
And though this space is furnished with a variety of unique elements,
it comes together harmoniously. “I wanted each space to have its own
personality within the whole, but there’s nothing that’s screaming out at
you,” Rich says. “I always say that interior design is the art of geometry,
where the whole is larger than its parts; that’s what is happening here.” DNJ
