Protect your eyes 

this Summer 

As you apply your sunscreen on the warm, 

bright days do you take the same care of 

your eyes? 

It’s easy to forget the age of your sunglasses. Sunglass 

tints can fade with time reducing the UV protection, 

so if yours are looking a little tired it is time to replace 

them - and give your eyes some extra protection. 

UV light is also present on cloudy days, so if you find 

yourself screwing up your eyes when there are bright 

white cloud covering the skies you will appreciate 

the benefits of a polarised lens. They are glare - 

reducing lenses that stop light that has been reflected 

off other surfaces; perfect for sunny and wet days 

when the sun is low. When driving the silver sheen on 

the road and reflections from oncoming cars is greatly 

reduced and the contrast enhanced. As well as being 

excellent for driving, polarized lenses offer the best 

all-round-protection for water sports, such as fishing 

and sailing, and also skiing. 

If you are over 60 you are more likely to develop 

cataracts, but we also know that continued exposure 

to UV can accelerate the progression of cataracts. 

Whilst they are treatable and certain medical 

conditions can also increase your risk of developing 

cataracts, wearing sunglasses to protect from 

exposure to UV is one small change that can help. 

With most of us living longer and travelling to 

hotter climates it is advisable to start protecting your 

eyes as soon as you can. There are choices for lens 

colours too, so take the time to consider the benefits 

of each. Brown is a contrast-enhancing tint whereby 

reds and greens are more defined making it a good 

choice for driving whilst grey is a neutral density tint 

that is considered a good choice for light sensitivity. 

Green is helpful for a bright but cloudy day, like the 

Ray Ban G15 lens that was originally used by pilots 

in the USA. So before you dig out your Summer 

wardrobe take a good look at your sunglasses.

Protection from 

domestic abuse 

What is domestic abuse? 

Domestic abuse is behaviour that consists 

of any of the following:- 

a) physical or sexual abuse; 

b) violent or threatening behaviour; 

c) controlling or coercive behaviour; 

d) economic abuse; and/or 

e) psychological, emotional or other abuse; 

between two people who are over the age of 16 and in a personal 

relationship. 

It can include harassment, stalking, female genital mutilation, 

forced marriage, ‘honour-based’ abuse and trafficking. 

If a child sees or hears domestic abuse happening to a family member, 

this is also domestic abuse. However, if they experience abuse directly, 

this is child abuse. 

What can you do to protect yourself, or a loved one, from domestic 

abuse? 

If you, or someone you know, may be experiencing domestic abuse, you 

should consider: 

• finding somewhere safe to stay; 

• discussing the situation with a trusted neighbour, friend or family 

member; 

• giving an extra set of keys to your home, copies of important 

documents, spare clothes and some money to that trusted person, in 

case you need to leave home quickly; 

• always having a mobile phone and some change on hand to make 

emergency calls; 

• reporting the domestic abuse to the police; 

• getting a Court Order to prevent the abuse, and/or protect you in your 

home; and 

• getting help from a domestic abuse charity. 

Always call the Police (999) if you or someone else may be in immediate 

danger. 

What legal options do you have? 

If you are suffering from domestic abuse, it is possible to apply to the 

Family Court for an injunction to help protect you. There are two types 

of injunctions that we can help you apply for: 

1. Non-Molestation Order – to prohibit your partner or spouse 

from using or threatening violence against you or your children, or 

intimidating, harassing or pestering you; 

2. Occupation Order – to set out who can live in the family home (or 

certain parts of it) and can also restrict someone from entering the area 

surrounding a home. 

There are certain rules as to who can apply for these types of orders, 

procedures to follow and the Court takes certain factors into account 

when deciding whether to award them. 

We can advise and help you decide which is the best 

course of action for you.

Is it wise to hold 

individual shares? 

A question we are often asked by clients is 

“Should we keep our share portfolio?” 

In the 1960’s and 70’s it was quite common to buy a 

basket of blue-chip shares, sit back and enjoy some 

consistent growth and useful dividends and these 

portfolios were often passed down through generations. 

Sadly, the phrase ‘blue-chip’ share is all but gone, 

with virtually all shares globally subject to increased 

volatility. Even the solid names like BP, M&S, Rolls 

Royce and Lloyds Bank have had their well-publicised 

crisis points. 

Many employed clients might have the option to 

purchase their company’s shares at a discount and this 

can provide some excellent opportunities. One risk to 

consider however is under-diversification - it’s never smart 

to put too many of your eggs into one basket. When 

you invest in the company where you work, your finances 

are doubly exposed. In the event your employer falters, 

not only might your investments tumble, but you might 

also find yourself out of work at the same time. Just ask 

former employees of Enron and very recently, Credit 

Suisse, who watched shares in their company plummet, 

while facing job uncertainty. 

Our preference is to encourage clients to ‘manage out’ 

their shares and this is a method of swapping shares for 

funds, which we believe are far more appropriate and 

where the control of risk can be introduced. We may 

need to manage the process over a number of tax years 

if Capital Gains Tax is a consideration, but the long-term 

result is often highly beneficial.

Waitrose in

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank 

you all for your patience with availability 

disruptions over June, the branch has 

recovered well and is ready for the hot 

summer expected. I was so grateful for all 

the understanding shown when talking to 

customers. 

So what can you look out for in store? As we 

head into the summer we have some fantastic 

new products and a great BBQ range, new 

lines include, chocolate strawberries and 

Sicilian lemon profiteroles, I have tried and can 

verify that they are truly delicious. 

Our in house bakery now bakes fresh cookies, 

there are 4 flavours to try.

fundraising success 

Following the success of our Waitrose New 

Lower Prices investment in February, from 

7 June we’ll lower the prices of over 200 

products, helping customers enjoy high quality, 

responsibly sourced food at competitive prices 

this summer.

Stunning gardens of Hall Place in Old Town 

Beaconsfield were opened up for a special 

fundraising afternoon on Sunday, 11 June 

2023. 

The event was in aid of the Cancer Treatment 

and Research Trust raising funds to support the 

research projects carried out by Professor Marcia 

Hall and her colleagues. Currently the charity is 

fundraising for a study to obtain more information 

about specific rare gynaecological cancers. 

Laura Brown, Charity Manager said, ‘A huge thank 

you to all who visited Hall Place Open Gardens in 

aid of the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust 

where a wonderful £5.100 was raised towards our 

gynaeological research projects.’

What’s been happening at 

Beaconsfield Town Council? 

It has been very busy over last 

few months. 

On the 27th April, we held the Annual Town 

Meeting.This is not a council meeting, but an 

opportunity for the many local community 

groups to tell the townsfolk what they have 

been doing over the year.This year included 

a special award for our Town Crier, Richard 

Smith, who has been in post for more than 

50 years.A commemorative plaque was 

unveiled at the meeting to the traditional cry, 

“Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!” 

hosted by Mayor Alastair Pike to welcome 

the Mayor of Langres, Anne Cardinal 

and Deputy Mayor, Nicolas Fuertes to 

Beaconsfield. Cllr Pike gifted a limitededition 

print of the ‘Welcome Back 

Beaconsfield painting, and Mme Cardinal 

gifted an etching of Diderot, the famous 

French philosopher. Over the weekend, the

For the Coronation weekend, a delegation 

had been invited from Langres, our Twin 

Town in France to join the celebrations. We 

were happy to hold a reception on 5th May 

delegation watched the Coronation on the 

big screen event at St Mary’s and All Saints 

Church, enjoyed a visit to Bekonscot and 

dinner with the Beaconsfield Twinning 

Association, with entertainment from the 

Beaconsfield Music and Operatic Society. 

On Sunday 7th May, we had a great turnout for 

the Picnic on the Green where there was lots of 

entertainment, food, drinks and fun. Over £1k 

was raised for the Mayor’s Charities.

Society research shows that 900,000 

people in the UK have a form of 

dementia. By 2025, 1 million people will 

be living with the condition in the UK, 

and many millions more carers, partners, 

families and friends are affected.

A person with dementia will eventually lose 

the ability (or mental capacity) to make some 

decisions for themselves. 

While the person has mental capacity to do 

so, they can choose someone who they want 

(known as an ‘attorney’) to make decisions 

on their behalf when the time comes. This 

should be someone they trust. 

The person with dementia can give this 

power using a document called a Lasting 

power of attorney (LPA). There are two 

types:

both types of LPA. Different attorneys can

is a partner of similar age or has health 

problems of their own. 

Making an LPA involves filling out forms 

that then must be registered with the Office 

of the Public Guardian (OPG) to be used. 

Alzheimer’s Society offers a service to help 

people create and register LPAs using the 

OPG’s online tool. To find out more, the 

person with dementia can call Alzheimer’s
