in Fairfield, NZL. Aged 50 Years.
Mrs Manderson, wife of a miner residing at Walton Park, died suddenly on the evening of March 4th. While sitting on the doorstep
about 9 o’clock she was seized with an Apoleptic fit, and not withstanding the efforts of Dr. F. Fletcher, who was promptly in attendance,
she expired shortly afterwards. Deceased was 51 years of age, and leaves a large family. Column 2, page 2. Otago Daily
NZL. Occupation Midwife. Aged 87 Years.
On Page 4 of Enumeration District 3, South Parish of Paisley (formally
part of the Abbey Parish) in the 1841 census Elizabeth Manerson is recorded
as a 7 year old living with Robert and June Campbell and family
in Nelston Road. Date of arrival in Australia is not known. To quote Elizabeth,
“I was but a girl when we arrived in Australia.” As Elizabeth was
not recorded, in Paisley, in the 1851 census it is presumed that she
emmigrated some time during that decade with a foster family. She died
at her home, of a Cerebral Haemorrhage, attended by Doctor Fitchett.. 20
At the time of her marriage Elizabeth was slim, with long dark hair caught
in a bun and five feet two inches tall. In old age she was plump and her
small feet had difficulty supporting her bulk. On 17 July 1905 Elizabeth,
aged 72 and still extremely active, applied to Wellington for registration
under section 4A of the Midwives Registration Act 1904. She was well
known, in Dunedin, and in her later years was often seen in the company
of her eldest boy’s son John Arthur Brown. John was the owner of
G.Methven and Company, Dunedin’s Brass and Iron Foundary which at
the time was the largest in the southern hemisphere. Until her death
Elizabeth attended the firm’s annual picnic. She was survived by seven of
her ten children.
Elizabeth’s husband, was admitted to the Bar in London and practised
law in Sydney before becoming a gold miner, and later paymaster at the
Ballarat Gold Fields. In Dunedin Charles was unable to practise law,
because of religious prejudice. He was offered a position as a partner in
a Christchurch legal firm but Elizabeth did not want to move the family
for two reasons. One, she had a job as a midwife, and two, in January
25, 1861 her brother Peter, his wife Mary and their four sons had arrived
in Dunedin aboard the “Lady Egidia”, their assisted passage paid by
Elizabeth and Charles. Elizabeth was a strong and competent woman and
her work assumed greater importance in stabilising the family finances
because of her husband’s weakness for alcohol.
She married Charles Brown, son of William Brown & Arabella Hodges, 14
October 1853 in Bourne, Melbourne, AUS. Born 1829 in Oxford, GBR.
Died 14 May 1891 in Dunedin, NZL. Buried in Northern Cemetery,
Dunedin, NZL. Occupation Lawyer, Constable, Baliff. Aged 62 Years.
It is believed that he attended Eton school and later Oxford University
where he graduated as an architect. His brother Henry travelled out to
Australia, where he died, and the family in England sent Charles out to
find out what happened. When he got back to England he reported how
impressed he had been with the opportunities available in Australia. So
sometime in 1848 or 1849 he arrived back in the Colony.
Charles was a soldier with the rank of Major; went to Gabriel's Gully in
the Gold Escort as a Sheriff (complete with six chambered revolver.) Drove
an early coach (as a waggoner?) on the pigroot, 1862. 20
From Paisley to Dunedin
The "Ardrossan Herald" of Saturday, September 8, 1860 announced the purchase by Potter Wilson & Co., of Glasgow, of the large vessel on stocks
in Messrs. Barr & Shearer’s ship-building yard at Greenock. The ship is one of the largest, if not the largest wooden vessel ever built in Scotland.
Her model was the general theme of admiration, and we believe the timber of which she is built is the finest that could be procured. She measures
2192 feet long, extreme breadth 373ft., depth 222ft., registered tonnage 1,235, builders’ measurements 1.46l tons.
Greenock
As the launching day approached men women and families arrived from Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen, Ullapool, even
from Kirkwall in the Orkneys and from Northern Ireland. In all 438 passengers boarded the s.s. "Lady Egidia" on
that eventful day when flags flew and hundreds of spectators watched, including a party from "The Castle"
headed by the Earl and Countess of Eglinton and their daughter, Lady Egidia Montgomerie after whom
the ship was named.
The passengers trans- ferred in the rain, by the steamer "Craigneish Castle" to the "Lady Egidia" which
was lying about half a mile off Greenock. There was great confusion and bustle while transhipping the
luggage when a sailor fell from the main yard of the "Egidia" to the deck. He died next day.
The Voyage
At about 5 p.m. on Friday October 12 they weighed anchor and the steamer towed the ship out
past Cloch Light- house. The weather deteriorated so it was decided to put back to Gourock Bay
where she lay the night only about 3 miles below Greenock. The next morning, in weather described
as boisterous, the steamer came alongside and towed the ship past Argyllshire and Arran, passing
Pladda Lighthouse at 6 p.m. At dusk, when the steamer left, the "Egidia" was off the Mull of Kintyre,
roughly 60 miles from Greenock, with sails set to pass to the west.
The first five days were cold and stormy with the
boat pitching heavily and shipping
seas. A stowa- way was set to labour
at dirty work when he gave himself
up on the sixth A Sketch of the Lady Egidia day. The four diarists
recorded there was at times much seasickness
and many complaints about the Doctor. Three families lost their only child and two
lost all three of their children. One mother who had left an "ill-doing husband to fight her
own way," had the death of her children described as "the hand of God has relieved her, of
her burden." At the end of the voyage passengers were issued pieces of freestone for scrubbing
the deck, and although it was not enforced they were expected to do it. "However, the
single females are the only parties who refuse to come under subjection. Their dinner was
kept from them until they would clean their place."
Port Chalmers
This fine immigrant vessel, the largest that had ever visited Otago, (at that date) arrived at
the Heads on Saturday last, after a voyage of about 104 days from Glasgow. On her departure
she had on board 438 souls, equal to 371 statute adults, comprising 58 married couples,
137 single males, 70 single females, 96 children between 1 and 12, and 19 infants, but
this number decreased by the occurrence of 32 deaths against 7 births. The deaths were,
with two exceptions, those of children. The two adults were young men who were in a very
bad state of health when they embarked..
The "Lady Egidia" was a new vessel, on her maiden voyage, was described as very lofty
between decks, and altogether excellently adapted for the conveyance of a large number of
passengers. It was written that the immigrants spoke in the highest terms of the quality and
abundance of the provisions and water provided. (entries in diaries showed there was some
disquiet over the quality of food, salt and water) The "Lady Egidia" was towed in from
outside the heads the by the paddle steamer "Geelong," which brought up the passengers to
the Dunedin Jetty at about 7p.m. They were all quickly housed in the immigration barracks
as temporary accommodation. The immigrants were described in an editorial as "scarcely
equal in appearance to some of our late arrivals."
The demand for the services of the new arrivals was as usual considerable, and numbers
have already found permanent situations. The young men and female servants have no
difficulty in this matter - the married people with large families are not so readily absorbed,
but temporary work is provided for all. Young men were said to have refused offers of 50
pounds per annum, with rations, in favour of 7/- per diem for day labour. There may have
been no advantage in this when the expense of board and lodging in the town and the loss
of time from broken weather was taken into consideration. At the time the "Lady Egidia"
arrived the Government was employing a large number of hands on public works, during
the fine weather for road-making.
The "Egidia" made a second voyage from Glasgow to Otago, sailing on January 12th. 1862.
She arrived at Port Chalmers on May 7th, 1862, via Launceston, van Dieman’s Land, after an
unpleasant and protracted voyage. When she left Glasgow there were 217 passengers for
Launceston and 70 or 80 for Otago. On June 4th, 1862, she sailed from Port Chalmers for
Melbourne in ballast, with 250 passengers and 579oz. 18dwts. of gold dust. The vessel made
two more voyages to New Zealand between 1867 and 1869.
On March 31, 1868, the "Lady Egidia" sailed for London with the largest cargo yet to leave
Otago. It included 5,627 bales of wool, 16 bales of skins, and 32 bales of leather. In 1813 she
was resold to C. H. Kernot, of Calcutta. The vessel retained the name "Lady Egidia" until 1882, when she was broken up
SHAG POINT
It is not known how many of the family worked in the Shag Point mine but it figured richly in tales handed down. Records show that John and Thomas were married whilst
working there and seven Manderson children were born in the area. Shag Point is a headland on the Otago Coast at the southern end of Katiki Beach (67 kilometres north of
Dunedin.) In 1863 the first coal mine, known as Vulcan Head was opened, and by 1880 mining had become a large scale operation with nearly 200 people employed. About
40,000 tons of coal was mined annually from under the sea, and the inflowing of water often besieged the operation. Some time between Jock’s birth in early 1886 and Maggie’s
in early 1888, Peter, Thomas and William moved their families across to the West Coast to join John who had been there since 1884.
In 1902 the pumps failed and serious flooding of the mine caused it to close. At the time Vulcan Head was the third largest coal mine in the Otago province. In later years it was
pumped dry and reopened although it never operated on such a large scale again. Linda Brand remembered being taken by her grandmother to meet her uncle Charles William
Manderson and seeing the light on his helmet as he emerged covered in coal dust. The time of this meeting would have been about the end of World War I.
The miners’ cottages are now used as cribs and there is a tiny boat harbour with steel rings imbedded in the rocks where the collier Shag used to moor last century. From there
the bagged coal was transferred to schooners lying offshore. Exposed coal seams are visible on the cliffs, collapsed coal shafts, an explosives magazine, trolley remains,
tramway supports and large heaps of mine tailings. Eroded rock stacks along the shore are populated by fur seals, an occasional Hooker sea lion and hundreds of shags.
“He came out from Scotland aged
nine and probably had little schooling
- held a pen between fingers
(thumb not used) but read the newspaper.”
21
Peter owned property in the Nightcaps
in the 1880s. His first three
children were foundation pupils of
the Nightcaps School. When the
family moved across to the Brunner
on foot.
He married Eliza Jane Stevenson, 2 Oct 1874 in Green Island, NZL. Born
1855 in Whitehaven, GBR. Died 20 Nov 1933 in Greymouth, NZL. Aged
Eliza Jane Stevenson, on Coal
Creek farm with flood marks on the
wall! They moved to Runanga and
had coloured pictures of Royalty
hanging on bedroom walls. I never
knew why; maybe coming from
Cumberland, it was the custom to
display one’s loyalty!” 21
The death occurred, last evening at the
Grey River Hospital, of Eliza Manderson,
wife of Peter Manderson, of
Runanga. Deceased had been in illhealth
during the past twelve months.
She was a native of Cumberland, Eng-
5. John MANDERSON. Born 1 March 1854 in Paisley, GBR. Died 26 June
1902 in Kiripaka, NZL. Buried in Ngunguru, NZL. Occupation Miner.
Aged 48 Years.
John was working at Shag Point when they married. From there they moved
to Denniston, a busy coal town, high in the misty hills behind Westport.
There was no road in, and all goods and people had to ride a coal truck up
or down the famous incline which near the top rises in a gradient of 1 to 1.
Their first 11 children were all born up that mountain and it must have
been around 1897 that they moved north to the coal mine at Kiripaka, out
of Whangarei. Their cottage was at the foot of the hill and perched on 7
foot blocks to be safe from the floods. In the village were 3 stores, a Post
Office, a butcher and Fyfe’s Boarding house which frequently flooded.
Four years later Georgina died of heart disease and less than a year later,
John was drowned
whilst rowing home
after tending her
grave. John and
Georgina are buried
together in Section
1 Plot 15 of the
Cape Horn Cemetery
at Ngunguru.
This cemetery is on
the Cape Horn
Headland, where
coffins had to be
brought in by boat,
and carried up the
hillside through the
bush. 6
29 October 1894 in Great Barrier Island, NZL. Miner. Aged 37 Years.
He married Agnes McEwin, 1880.
Drowned when the steamship “Wairarapa” was wrecked on the rocks of
Great Barrier Island. Excerpts from newspapers of the day told the
story:
It now seems certain that a man named William Manderson and his brother’s wife
were drowned in the Wairarapa. Manderson was for five or six years a deputy in
the Westport Coal Company’s mine at Denniston. He went to Coolgardie three or
four months ago, leaving his wife at Denniston, and was returning, bringing the
wife of his brother, who resides in Sydney, on a visit to a friend in the district.
The Evening Post, 8 November 1894
The Union Steamship Company has received from the Sydney office a list of the
passengers who left Sydney by the Wairarapa, about as correct as is possible to
make it. The following is the list of those lost: Amongst those listed is Mrs
Manderson,in the Saloon area, and Mr Manderson in Steerage.
The Evening Post, 13th November, 1894
In all 74 bodies have been recovered up to date. A body recovered some days ago,
and identified as Bird, has now been pretty conclusively proved to be that of
M.Anderson, a Westport miner, while another body has been identified as that of
Bird. The Evening Post, 15th November, 1894
death was given as a self inflicted gunshot wound.
Page 5
For the family there was a sequel reported in a newspaper article as:
A FRIENDLY SUIT.
A REMINISCENCE OF THE WAIRARAPA WRECK.
A singular case was heard in Chambers at Wellington on the 31st ult. before
the Chief Justice. When the Wairarapa was wrecked on the Great Barrier
Island in October 1894, there were on board two New Zealand miners
named George Bird (of Petone) and Angus Manderson, who were returning
from Coolgardie. Each was supposed to have left Sydney with money
in his possession. Both were drowned, and subsequently their bodies were
washed ashore, and buried in the same grave. Among the effects taken off
the bodies were two belts, in one of which was £133 in gold. Somehow the
effects got mixed up, and no one was afterwards able to say from which
body the gold was taken. The money was in due course deposited with the
Public Trustee, and recently Messers Menteath and Beere on behalf of the
representatives of Manderson made claim to it. Under the singular circumstances
the Public Trustee declined to pay over the money, which was subsequently
claimed by Mr T Young on behalf of the representatives of Bird.
Ultimately it was agreed by the parties to divide the money, with the consent
of the Trustee and the sanction of the Supreme Court. A friendly suit was
accordingly instituted, which came before the Chief Justice to-day in the
form of a motion to an order directing the Public Trustee to make an equal
division of the money. His Honor after reserving his decision, gave judgement
ordering the money to be equally divided between the representatives
of the two men. 7
Charles Elizabeth Jane Dickson
He married Elizabeth Jane Dickson, 1882. Born 1859. Died June 1932 in
Family members with her daughter, Margaret, when she died, came to
Elizabeth’s house to tell her the news. Elizabeth sat up with her face
glowing, smiled and began speaking to someone across the room. Those
gathered around her bedside say she seemed to be having a conversation
with her husband Charles just before she too died. Faye Nicholson says
she remembers Elizabeth smoking a clay pipe and roasting potatoes and
onions in the ash pan, of the coal range, at night after tea. 14
9. Archibald MANDERSON. Born 30 June 1864 in Saddle Hill, NZL. Died
30 August 1940 in Green Island, NZL. Occupation Miner. Aged 76 Years.
Archie Manderson was bald and wore a hat in bed. He stayed at our house
once ... used to drink a bit. One night he went out and got confused about
the houses. He went next door, thinking it was our place, got the window
open and was trying to get in. “Are you there George, are you there Mag?”
He yelled out. The neighbour, Mr Crawford’s name was George too but
his wife’s name was Vera, so he knew it was our place that Archie thought
he was at. Mr Crawford was an amputee and had been going to give
Archie a crack on the head with his walking stick. Archie’s life was probably
saved by his saying, “are you there Mag.” Mum and Mr Crawford
had a laugh over that!

I remember him telling me once about a Salvation Army lass coming
to his door at Saddle Hill. He was a miner too and had been sleeping
late. His wife wasn’t home so he had to get up and answer the door.
The Salvation Army lass standing there asked him if he had found
Jesus. “Christ, I didn’t know he was lost!” Archie said. He laughed
so much when he told me this that tears were rolling down his cheeks.
Europe with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, embarking on the 30th of
July 1916. Early in the war he was a runner, and had to relay messages
back and forward between the front and back lines, on foot. As a rifleman
he earned the Distinguished Conduct Medal, which was pinned on him at
Buckingham Palace by Edward the VIII. His citation in the London Gazette
dated 18th February 1919 reads: "For conspicuous gallantry near
Crevecoeor, 5th October 1918, during a minor operation in establishing
bridgeheads across a canal at de L'Escort when his platoon came suddenly
under heavy machine gunfire he immediately with a complete disregard
of danger engaged two enemy machine guns with such effect that his
platoon was able to reach the trench unsequently when the platoon was
heavily counter-attacked and had to withdraw; he remained behind and
covered the withdrawal."
From the official history of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade 2 states: "Their
advance had been greatly aided by the bold action of a Lewis gunner, Rifleman
P. Manderson, who, working in the open, engaged the enemy machine
guns firing within 100 yards. Manderson now remained behind to cover
their retirement, and, through heavily fired upon, he succeeded both in this
and later rejoining them later on with his gun." He was wounded on the
13th of October 1918, returned on the 28th February 1919 and was discharged
due to wounds on the 28th of March of the same year. His discharge
papers indicate he received an extra pension of 6d a day for life
from the Imperial Government, for being the holder of the D.C.M.

I struck the Depression years with my education at college. After skipping
age 25 years. Teachers’ Training College were closed and five year olds
were excluded until six years, etc. While teaching at Cross Creek I was
drafted into Fort Dorset at age 30. When the invasion scare was over we
were asked to “volunteer” for mines, forestry, or railway to keep up production,
but not discharged. That meant another four years on seven shillings
a day, and keep. When released I went back to Varsity and finished
Vitoria, Alava, ESP. Occupation Dairy Farmer. Aged 73 Years.
Charlie, the eldest of three boys, left school to work for his father in the
market gardens. When the gardening became unprofitable, and the move
was made to dairying, he milked cows and delivered milk on the milk round.
He moved with his young wife and child to a run down 200 acre dairy
farm in Hamua. With his brother Arthur they improved it to a point where
it became one of the most productive farms in the northern Wairarapa.
After taking over the farm from his father, at the age of 48, Charlie
puchased, another 252 acre dairy farm, and this, together with the home
unit was passed on to his youngest son Clive.
He married Joan Parker, daughter of Arthur Parker & Charlotte Louise
Hatchard, 29 March 1939 in Lower Hutt, NZL. Born 25 October 1918 in
Vogeltown, NZL.
Joan spent her childhood at Island
Bay in Wellington, and Taita in the
Hutt Valley. After leaving school
she went to work at the Epuni Nurseries
where she met Charlie. They
married and lived in Lower Hutt
until Marlene, their second born,
was just three weeks old. Then with
their few belongings, they moved to
an old farm house at Hamua. This
was their second trip to the farm
having spent three months in a
batch that had been part of an early
creamery. The batch had no electricity,
no toilet and no cooking or
washing facilities. The water was
drawn from a well, and a hot plate
over an open fire was her only
means of cooking.
After Charlie’s death in 1985 Joan lived for a time in a cottage on the farm
before moving to her present address in Palmerston North.
farm. Over the
years two more farms were added, another dairy farm and a runoff of 687
acres. Arthur was responsible for the clearing of scrub from the hill farm
and the fencing and development of both. That farm, and half of the hill
unit is being farmed by his son Ian. Arthur, a keen administrator was responsible
for the finances and bookwork on the farms and local committees
on which he served. He was, for many years, a Director of the Tui
