It gave me the opportunity to learn in depth about the purpose and mission of this program and at the same time meet excellent human beings like my compatriots Dr. Marcos A. Nuñez Cuervo (Dean of the School of Medicine, Universidad Iberoamericana - UNIBE and president of the Federation Panamericana de Facultades y Escuelas de Medicina) and Dr. Loraine Amell Bogaert (Vice Rector for Internationalization and Liaison · Universidad Iberoamericana - UNIBE), all of them with a single purpose in mind: to help others! From the first moment I noticed the professionalism and dedication in the organization of the conference. All the details were meticulously taken into account, with topics of much importance. These topics provided the opportunity, through breakout sessions, to be discussed and analyzed by panels of excellent people who were able to contribute greatly to these conversations. I had the honor of being part of the Sustainability panel, which allowed me to analyze the concept in greater depth and apply it to the different areas of our own environment and life. I understood that “sustainability is the key to a better future” and that “sustainable actions help make a real difference in society.” I also had the opportunity to attend the “Global Mental Health” session, which gave me the opportunity to hear from professionals in the area with great ideas that could bring greater and better solutions to mental health problems. This is a topic that hit too close to home. During this session I was able to express my points of view and be able to be heard; also, it was great to see that there is an understanding and purpose of using the studies and resources to improve the mental health of people not only locally, but globally. The honor dinner was an excellent opportunity to interact with many of the guests and meet some of the outstanding ones who were recognized, such as Dr. Jett Choquette who was recognized for the great job she has carried out with our organization Dominican Community Center and in our Hispanic/Latino community on behalf of the Global Health Program. At the end of the Conference, I had the opportunity to see the presentations of excellent projects sponsored by the Global Health program, including which we have been involved in, “Youth Academy for Latin Leaders”, masterfully presented by Jason Nova. This program is a community-led leadership program created by the Dominican Community Center and supported by Nuvance Global Health Academy. It was a great opportunity for all the representatives of our community to be present at this conference and to be able to witness a magnificent event that contributes so much to our communities throughout the world. OUR PEOPLE, OUR MISSION Global Health eMagazine July 2023 Highlights Among the Letters Reflections Hispanic and Latinx Voices Global Local Art to Remind Us of Who We Can Be Our Beautiful Planet Voices of Ugandan Students Written by Jett Choquette, MD Internal medical resident at Virginia Commonwealth University Reflecting on the 2023 Global Health Conference at Nuvance Health Earlier this June, I attended the second annual Global Health Conference at Nuvance Health. As I reflected on my experience, several words came to mind, among them “humbling,” “inspiring,” and “refreshing.” Global health leaders from around the world, Zimbabwe to the Dominican Republic, were in attendance. As I learned about these leaders’ work and the uniqueness of the locations where they serve, I was struck by how creative and driven to do good humans can be when we set our minds to it. From advocating for affordable medications for whole nations to tackling mental health challenges, the healthcare professionals I learned from at the conference showed compassion, diligence, and dedication. I had the opportunity to participate in a panel about advocacy. Different panelists described their work in places where governments are constantly changing and other places where governments never change. We talked about how to influence system changes in diverse settings and on local and national scales. Learning about the advocacy work of others renewed my motivation to continue to advocate for better health for all, especially those faced with the least access to health resources. There is so much sadness and unfairness in the world that at times it seems impossible to believe there is also good. Connecting with the global health community reminded me that just as the world is a sad place, it is also a beautiful place full of people doing amazing things to empower others and improve the experience of being human. I was reminded that while some of us (like me) have only worked on local projects, our work is impactful both because of the local change it causes and because we are part of a global network. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from my colleagues at the conference about their work in global health. I am humbled and inspired to be part of a network of people dedicated to improving the health of those most in need around the globe. 9 Highlights continued on next page >>
