New ride company hired
The Madison County Fair
Board hired a new ride company
for the 2023 fair: Lisko
Family Midway Amusements
out of northeast Ohio.
“They are a really good
quality company,” said Paul
Gross, fair board president.
Last year, the fair board
had to scramble after the ride
company they used in 2021
went out of business. After calling dozens of
other companies around the Midwest, they
ended up booking a smaller outfit that provided
only rides for young children.
This year, fairgoers can expect a mix of
large and small rides. Lisko is bringing a variety
of rides to the fairgrounds, half of which
are geared toward teens and adults and half
geared toward children.
The rides will be available Tuesday
through Saturday of fair week, with Wednesday
set aside as Kids’ Day. Lisko has another
commitment the first three days of the fair.
The ride schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, July 11 — 4-11 p.m.
Wednesday, July 12 — 1-11
p.m. A special $10 kids’ ride
bracelet will be available for
unlimited rides between 1
and 4 p.m. Ride tickets return
to regular price after 4
p.m. The rides will be shut
down from 4 to 5 p.m. for a
mandatory break.
Thursday, July 13 — 4-11
p.m.
Friday, July 14 — 4-11 p.m.
Saturday, July 15 — 1-11 p.m.
Lisko Family Midway Amusements has
been family-owned and operated since 1961.
Tim Lisko’s father founded the business, and
now Tim, one of his sons, and his nephews
run the operation. Tim is a certified ride inspector
in Ohio and Pennsylvania and maintains
a daily inspection program for his
rides.
The company provides rides for fairs, festivals,
and events throughout Ohio. They
also travel to events in Pennsylvania, Virginia,
West Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina,
South Carolina, and Florida.
Donate to fight hunger
Farm Credit Mid-
America, Rural 1st, and
the Madison County
Junior Fair Board have
partnered to raise food
donations to benefit local
food pantries as part of a
statewide food drive contest.
Now in its third
year, “Fight Hunger,
Stock the Trailer” is a
friendly competition in
which cash prizes go to
the participating junior
fairs that collect the
most non-perishable
food donations.
“Last year, we were
grateful to place third in
our region, but this year,
we want to be first,” said
Tina Seaburn, Madison
County’s Junior Fair
Board coordinator and
Senior Fair Board secretary.
“We are very excited
to be offered this
opportunity again.”
Madison County received $1,500 for their
third-place finish in 2022. Prizes are $5,000
for first place, $3,500 for second place, and
$1,500 for third place. Additionally, every
junior fair that enters receives $500 just for
participating. All prize money goes back into
the Junior Fair to help pay for awards and
other forms of youth exhibitor support.
Anyone is welcome to drop off food donations
at a trailer that will be parked near the
Junior Fair Office on the Madison County
Fairgrounds throughout fair week.
Last year, the Madison County Fair Junior Fair Board placed
third in the “Fight Hunger, Stock the Trailer” initiative sponsored
by Farm Credit Mid-America and Rural 1st. They are participating
again this year. Shown here: David Covert hands a
pack of bottled water to Kaci Daily, a London FFA member, as
they stock a trailer with non-perishable food.
Seaburn said.
Additionally, the Junior Fair Board plans
to promote its own internal competition,
challenging youths associated with the different
animal species barns and project areas
to outdo each other on food donations.
Regional winners are determined by the
overall weight of the food donations they collect.
Weigh-in day for Madison County is
July 16, the day after the fair closes.
“Last year, over 50 junior fairs across
Ohio collected nearly 170,000 pounds of food
that went on to benefit 74 local food banks.
We’re very excited to see what the growth
and impact will look like as the contest enters
its third year this summer,” said Rudi
Pitzer-Perry, a regional vice president of
agricultural lending for Farm Credit Mid-
America in Ohio.
“The most rewarding part of the contest is
seeing the connection that kids are making
with local food banks,” said Amanda
Lovedahl, an associate financial officer for
Farm Credit Mid-America and one of the
team members who leads the Fight Hunger,
Stock the Trailer initiative.
The Fight Hunger, Stock the Trailer contest
Roger Straley of London, shown here competing, was the Ohio State Tractor Pullers Association’s
2022 champion in the limited pro diesel truck category.
OSTPA organizing pulls
“You’re going to see some
of the best in the state when
it comes to truck and tractor
pulling,” said Stacie White,
executive secretary for the
Ohio State Tractor Pullers
Association (OSTPA).
OSTPA is hosting this
year’s Madison County Fair
truck and tractor pulls at 7
p.m. July 12. The last time
OSTPA hosted the pulls was 12 years ago.
They are glad to be back, White said.
The Madison County Fair is one of 41
shows the organization is putting on
around the state this year, up from an average
of 32. The season runs from June
through September. Members compete for
cash, points, and bragging rights over the
course of the season.
“The Madison County event is early in
the season, so we’ll likely have a good
turnout because they want to start accumulating
points as early as possible,”
White said.
The competition categories are: limited
pro diesel trucks, super stock tractors, twowheel
drive trucks, super-modified fourwheel
drive trucks, and modified tractors.
“The modified tractors are always interesting
to watch. They are multi-engine and
have big tires on the back and little tires
on the front. We will get a variety of different
engines in that class,” White said.
She also noted that OSTPA
is one of only two sanctioning
bodies in the United States
that runs the super modified
four-wheel drive truck class.
The organization maintains
a guaranteed payout scale. The
prizes range from $650 for first
place to $75 for 15th place.
OSTPA is celebrating its
60th anniversary. The organization
is comprised of eight clubs from around
the state.
OSTPA is a member of the Pro Pulling
League and, as such, follows their rules and
regulations for sanctioned events. To learn
Food trucks new to lineup
Sure, the fair features truck pulls, rides,
and livestock shows, but it also features food!
This year’s fair food scene will look a little
different with the addition of food trucks in
the evenings.
Depending on the night, one or two food
trucks will set up beside the beer garden,
near the infield side of the fairgrounds. They
will serve up tasty treats from approximately
5 to 10 p.m. to coincide with the nighttime
entertainment.
“We’re trying to create bigger events this
year to draw in more people,” said fairboard
member Tia Sexton. “Food trucks are a
pretty popular thing anymore. So, we
thought, why not bring in as many as we can
to add to the traditional fair vendors.”
The food truck schedule is as follows:
• Saturday, July 8—Schmidt’s Sausage
Haus in conjunction with the rodeo;
• Sunday, July 9—Schmidt’s in conjunction
with the pig scramble and Sean
Prather’s concert;
• Monday, July 10—El Ray Tacos in conjunction
with the KOI dirt drag races;
• Wednesday, July 12—Pitabilities and
truck and tractor pulls;
• Thursday, July 13—Little Bear Food
Truck serving toasted subs and more in conjunction
with the Mason Cordell Memorial
motocross races and Aaron Buckley concert;
• Friday, July 14—Dos Hermanos tacos
and Little Bear in conjunction with the autocross
races and Trainwreck concert; and
• Saturday, July 15—El Rey Tacos and
Little Bear in conjunction with the demolition
derby.
Of course, the fair will feature plenty of
traditional food vendors set up throughout
the heart of the fairgrounds. According to
Hope Thornberry, fairboard treasurer, 25
vendors are returning from last year, joined
by 12 new vendors.
The beer tent will be open each night of
fair week.

Special interest auction
Youth creativity and
handiwork hits the
auction block July 13
For the third straight year, the Madison
County 4-H Committee is hosting an auction
dedicated to youths exhibiting non-livestock projects.
Last year’s special interest auction brought in
a total of $15,000. Forty 4-Hers submitted items
to the auction. Over 200 people showed up to
watch the sale, in-
“I like the fact that
the kids who aren’t
taking livestock to the
fair have an opportunity
to sell and make a
little money to spend
on their project for
next year.”
cluding approximately
75 individuals
who picked up bidding
numbers.
“We even had a bidding
war happen
among sets of grandparents,”
said organizer
Daphne
–Daphne Hedgecock Hedgecock. “We also
had some people who
gave us money to be used to make sure every youth
made a certain minimum amount. Last year, that
minimum worked out to be just over $200.”
Youths participating in the auction must submit
items related to their fair project. They must
create or assemble the items themselves; nothing
can be pre-made. Each youth can enter one item
for bidding.
Among the items on the auction block last
year were an American flag decoration made out
of cartridges from a shotgun, cupcakes decorated
and displayed to look like a tractor, a birdwatching
kit, baked goods, aprons, and quilts.
“I like the fact that the kids who aren’t taking
livestock to the fair have an opportunity to sell
and make a little money to spend on their project
for next year,” Hedgecock said.
She also likes the learning opportunity the
auction presents. The 4-H Committee makes
thank-you cards featuring photos of the exhibitors
holding their auction items. The youths
write notes in the cards and send them to the
winning bidders.
“That way, the kids learn the importance of
thank-yous and reaching out to the community,”
Hedgecock said.
This year’s special interest auction is set for
July 13 at 5 p.m. in the Della Selsor Building. Potential
bidders are asked to show up between 4
and 4:30 p.m. to register and peruse items before
the auction begins.
Alexander Vance, a member of the
Clover Clippers 4-H Club, made a
cedar birdhouse for his Woodwork
Level 2 project at last year’s fair. It was
auctioned off during the Special Interest
Projects auction.
Lily Studebaker’s landscape painting
was auctioned off at last year’s fair.
She made it for her “Let’s Get Started
in Art” project. She is a member of the
Prairie Riders 4-H Club.

Try extreme games for free
In an effort to enhance
the fairgoing
experience, the
Madison County
Agricultural Society
(a.k.a. Senior Fair
Board) is offering
new entertainment
options at this year’s
fair that don’t effect
visitors’ pocketbooks.
“We have lined up
some quality entertainment
that allows
folks to have fun
without incurring
additional cost once
they’re in the fair. It’s a little treat from the
Ag Society, sponsors, and others who support
the fair,” said Quinton Keeran, fair
board member.
NEO Extreme Games out of northeast
Ohio is providing one of those options in the
form of “totally crazy, totally free outdoor
game adventures.” These extreme games are
friendly for ages 5 and older and are free and
unlimited with paid admission to the fair.
A different game will be offered each day.
The offerings include:
• Bubble Soccer—Participants are placed
in giant bubbles with holes for their feet,
then they roll, flip, bound, and knock people
down.
• Water Tag—This game can be best described
as squirt guns meet “capture the
flag.” The flag is a bucket that participants
must fill with water in order to win. Additionally,
players wear vests; when their
vests fill with water, they’re out of the game.
The tag line is: “Get ready, get set, get wet.”
• Extreme Cornhole—A cross between
putt-putt golf and cornhole, this game features
boards with different shapes, different
sized holes, and obstacles.
• Gellyball—“This game combines the fun
of paintball and the safety of laser tag without
the reloading hassle of Nerf,” says Cain,
NEO Extreme Games co-owner. Players are
equipped with blasters that shoot small
beads that dissolve on impact. There are two
options with gellyball: blast each other or
play target games.
Cain encourages anyone to give the
games a try.
“All sorts of people do it. We’ve had an 82-
year-old man in the bubbles before. It’s fun,
it’s safe, it’s different,”
he said. “Don’t
be shy. Come on up
and give it a try. The
Madison County Fair
has given you a great
opportunity to have
some extreme fun.”
N E O E x t r e m e
Games has been in
business since 2015.
They set up at an average
of 30 fairs and
festivals each year,
as well as parties,
corporate events, and
fundraisers. They operate
NEO Extreme Sports will be at the fair
With more than 70
classes offered, the Mason
Cordell Memorial Motocross
Race promises a whole lot of
race action.
The event is set for July
13 at 7 p.m. in the infield.
FastTraxx, the Athens,
Ohio, outfit that puts on the
race, will design and construct
the track that day,
starting in the morning.
“There will be a lot of different
jumps and tabletops.
We make sure the track is
rider friendly for both the
little guys and the older riders.
It’s wide open, so it’s
good for quads and bikes
both,” said Shawna Bickley who co-owns
FastTraxx with her husband, Norm. “We
want everybody to be able to ride safely and
enjoy their time on the track.”
Registration runs from 4 to 6 p.m., followed
by practice at 6, and the races sometime
around 7. The cost to enter is $25 per
class for youth and amateurs and $30 per
class for professionals. Bickley said the
Madison County race attracts primarily
youth riders.
“We’ve had riders as young as 3 years old.
We’ve also had people 65 and older for the
adult classes,” Bickley said. “We have a lot
of guys who run in multiple classes, and we
have a large group of youth riders who follow
our fair race series.”
FastTraxx is hosting races at 18 fairs this
The fair’s motocross event is
named in memory of Mason
Cordell.
summer. All are part of the
Kenda Tire Southeastern
Ohio Super Series which
also includes nine races at
FastTraxx’s home track in
Nelsonville, Ohio. Those
involved in the series earn
points toward final placements
at the end of the series.
Anyone is welcome to
enter the Madison County
race, whether they are involved
in the series or not.
All entrants are required
to wear a helmet, goggles,
long pants, long-sleeved
shirts, and boots that come
up over their ankles. Visit
http://fasttraxxracing.com/ for a full list of
rules and classes. The top three finishers in
each class win plaques. Professional riders
earn cash.
FastTraxx also offers a true beginner
learning class. This non-competitive class
gives newbies to the sport a chance to give it
a try in a no-pressure situation. Each participant
receives a plaque.
The Madison County race is named after
Mason Cordell, the son of Matt and Amanda
Cordell. Mason was a Madison-Plains High
School student who loved motocross, football,
hunting, snowmobiling, 4-H, FFA, and more.
He passed away in 2019 as the result of a fall
from his motocross bike. All of the plaques
given at the race bear his image.

Try rodeo’s chute dogging
Broken Horn Rodeo
has added a ninth event to
their lineup for this year’s
Madison County Fair
Rodeo which will take
place July 8 at 7:30 p.m.
It’s called chute dogging,
and it’s for amateurs
only—no pro cowboys allowed.
“We put one of our bull
dogging steers in a bucking
chute. As soon as the
steer clears the gate, you
have to throw it down on
its side,” explained Jim
The event is geared toward
fair visitors who
want to get in on the rodeo
action. Anyone 18 or older
is welcome to enter. Prizes
go to the winners.
Another fun add-on is the kids’ stick
horse races which take place at intermission.
Entrants run around four cones; the
fastest win prizes. There are two age
groups: 5 years old and younger; and 6 to 9
years old. There is no entry fee.
The rest of the show lineup includes: saddle
bronc riding, bareback horse riding,
steer wrestling, tie-down calf roping, barrel
racing, team roping, bull riding, and cowgirls’
break-away roping. These events are
open to pros and amateurs. Anyone younger
than 18 must have a notarized waiver from
their parents. The call-in date to enter is
July 3, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Central Standard
Time, (903) 287-7852. Those who want to
Children can get in on rodeo action during the stick
horse races at intermission.
Broken Horn Rodeo puts on a terrific show featuring nine
events plus kids’ stick horse races.
compete must call on this date and time, no
exceptions.
All entry fees go back into cash prizes for
the winners. Broken Horn adds $500 to each
event to complete the purse money. Additionally,
those participating in rodeo circuit
competitions earn a point for every dollar
they win; those points count for national
standings for finals.
Broken Horn Rodeo is based out of Ripley,
Ohio, near Cincinnati. Founded in 1991,
the business is sanctioned by the International
Professional Rodeo Association and
the American Professional Rodeo Association.
This year, Broken Horn is doing 22
shows, traveling around Ohio and to Kentucky,
Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada,
Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
In conjunction with the rodeo, the
Madison County Fair Board is sponsoring
a mechanical bull from 6 to 9
p.m. Anyone can ride for free. Children
and adults are welcome.
Fairgoers are welcome to get autographs
from cowboys, bull fighters,
and the rodeo’s funny man if
they are available.
Admission to the rodeo is free
with paid admission to the fair.
Dirt drags: Anything goes
KOI Drag Racing returns to the fair with
what promises to be a spectacle.
“You never know what you’re going to see.
We’ve had people race in Amish buggies,
garbage trucks, tractors. We’ve had two Bobcats
go up against each other,” said KOI
owner Lewis Cleaver.
The dirt drags are set for July 10 at 7 p.m.
in the infield. Registration and open practice
run from 5 to 7 p.m. Races start at 7. Entrants
race head-to-head down a 200-foot
long track.
Anyone is welcome to enter with just
about any kind of vehicle. Those younger
than 18 years old must have signed permission
from their parents.
A total of 42 classes are offered, grouped
into three main categories: diesel; ATV, sideby-side,
and dirt bikes; and full-size vehicles.
Those running ATVs, side-by-sides, or dirt
bikes must wear a Department of Transportation
approved helmet.
The entry fee is $20 for diesel, hot gas,
and open classes. The fee for all other classes
is $10.
“It’s a 100 percent payback in all classes.
We pay the top two or three places, depending
on the class,” Cleaver said.
To keep things interesting for spectators,
KOI mixes up the classes. You could be
watching dirt bikes one minute and trucks
the next. They don’t run all of the same type
of vehicles in consecutive races.
Cleaver noted that Madison County tends
to draw a lot of entrants with diesel trucks.
He also noted KOI has a good following with
lots of racers competing in multiple events
on the KOI schedule.
“We have a lot of people travel with us
everywhere,” he said.
Based in Owenton in northern Kentucky,
KOI has been in business for 12 years. They
do 100 to 110 shows in nine different states
each year. Cleaver owns the business with
his wife, Heather.
New: Video game trucks
Are you into video games? Curious about
virtual reality? The 2023 Madison County
Fair has something for you.
Two gaming trucks are scheduled to set up
in the midway from 5 to 9 p.m. July 8-9 and
July 14-15. One specializes in all sorts of traditional
video games. The other specializes in
virtual reality games. Both involve trucks
equipped with televisions and consoles.
“Gaming is big with kids. So, we thought,
let’s bring in something that draws in the
youth and, that way, they’ll also get to see
the other things that go on at the fair,” said
fairboard member Tia Sexton.
While the target audience is youths, adults
are welcome to enjoy the gaming trucks, too.
Buckeye Mobile Entertainment
Based in Columbus, Buckeye Mobile Entertainment
has been bringing the fun to
birthday parties, family reunions, school
events, church events, corporate picnics, and
other community events for eight years. This
is only the second time the company has set
up at a county fair, but they are ready to welcome
gamers on the midway.
“Our video game truck is equipped with
seven televisions and is climate controlled,”
said Maurice “Coach Moe” Colbert, company
president. “We have Xbox, PlayStation, and
Nintendo Switch game consoles.”
Players can choose from a wide variety of
games, from Mario Kart to NBA 2K23 and
Madden NFL 23. All games are E-rated for
everyone. No teen or mature-rated games
will be offered.
“One of the most popular games is
Minecraft,” Colbert. “Another popular one is
Just Dance which we set up on televisions
outside the truck.”
The minimum age to play any of the
games is 8 years old. Four people can play
per television inside the truck. Sessions
likely will run 15 minutes, depending on the
line. There is no charge to play.
VR Lounge Game Truck
At the VR Lounge Game Truck, fair visitors
will have their choice of playing virtual
reality games or traditional video games.
With the virtual reality options, gamers
wear headsets that make them feel like they
are inside the game.
The 22-foot long truck has four virtual reality
stations, each equipped with a PS4
gaming console and headset. One person
plays at a time. All games are non-violent
and feature themes like deep sea, carnival,
Ironman, and adventure. One of the stations
is dedicated to a virtual reality car simulator.
Virtual reality games are the main attraction
at the VR Lounge Game Truck.
The Buckeye Mobile Entertainment gaming
truck is equipped with multiple televisions
and game consoles.
The virtual reality games are recommended
for ages 8 and older.
“Virtual reality is quite an experience. It’s
immersive. It takes video games to a whole
other level,” said Janell Crump, who co-owns
the Columbus-based business with Douglas
Whitson.
The truck also includes one station dedicated
to traditional video games. It’s
equipped with a PS5 gaming console. One or
two people can play at a time. Additionally,
up to eight players at a time can play games
using a Wii U console connected to a television
on the truck’s exterior.
The cost to play games at the VR Lounge
Game Truck is $5 per 10-minute session.

Her dress is ‘sew’ special
Sara Studebaker had dreamt for
a while about making her own prom
dress. Late last year, she got the
idea to make it a two-for-one effort—
a dress for prom that doubles as an
awesome 4-H project.
“I have liked princesses for a
long time and knew I wanted to
make a Cinderella or Belle-style
dress—something poofy,” said the
17-year-old who will be a senior at
London High School next year.
She found a pattern that suited
her but didn’t find the emerald
green fabric she had envisioned. So,
she pivoted and went with a black
dress as the base with an overlay
that looks like gold fireworks.
“I got the fabric in December and
started sewing in February. Prom
was April 22. I finished the dress on
April 22!” Studebaker said. “It was
a little nervewracking, but I got it
done.”
She not only wore the dress to
London’s prom, but also to the prom
hosted by Tolles Career & Technical
Center in May.
She said she loves the way it turned out.
Along the way, she learned some new skills,
including how to make an invisible zipper
and how to properly put a skirt and a top
together to make a dress. In June, she was
completing finishing touches to make it “4-
H ready”for judging.
Studebaker is not new to sewing.
“I’ve been sewing ever since I was little.
I would sit on my grandma’s lap and sew
with her,” she said.
She likes sewing because it’s not a typical
hobby these days.
“When I tell someone I sew, they are surprised
that people still do that. I think it’s
very important that everybody know how to
fix your own stuff and sew a button on,” she
said.
Active in 4-H for nine years, Studebaker
has taken everything from quilts to dresses
to the fair. She also has tried her hand at
sheep, archery, and cooking projects. She is
a member of the Prairie Raiders 4-H Club
and has worked with Daphne Hedgecock,
Madison County’s 4-H key leader for
sewing projects.
Studebaker served as the Madison
County Fair’s special interest ambassador
the past two years. This year, she plans to
run for fair queen.
Sara Studebaker made her own prom dress which
she wore to the proms hosted by London High
School and Tolles Career & Technical Center with
her boyfriend, Nick Miller, at her side. Studebaker is
entering the dress in the “Evening Gowns” category
for 4-H judging at the fair.
Autocross takes to infield
Autocross is making its debut at this
year’s Madison County Fair.
The new event is slated for July 14. Gates
open at 5 p.m. for registration. A Powerwheels
course for kids starts at 6:45. Autocross
racing follows at 7.
In autocross, drivers race through five to
10 laps on an off-road course filled with
bumps and hills. The fastest drivers win.
All entrants in a class race together unless
turnout requires heats. In such a case,
winners of each heat go to a feature race to
determine the overall winner for that class.
“Autocross is a good option because entrants
don’t need to spend months preparing
their vehicles like they would for demolition
derby. Just regular, get-around trucks and
cars can enter,” said Frances Hejduk, coowner
of Derbydog Inc., the company putting
on both autocross and the demolition derby
at this year’s fair.
Categories include: front-wheel drive
compact, rear-wheel drive (compact, minitruck,
and mini-van), large truck 4x4, powder
puff (front-wheel drive compact, for
women only), youth ages 13-16 (front-wheel
drive compact/mini-van), and side-by-side.
The cost to race is $40. The schedule,
rules, and vehicle specifications can be found
at www.derbydogdemo.com/derbydog or call
(440) 479-0376. Winners receive cash prizes
and trophies.
Prior to the start of official racing, youngsters
ages 5 to 8 years old are invited to take
two or three laps around their own small
course with small bumps. The children’s
event is free to enter; participants must
bring their own Powerwheels. Trophies and
prizes will be awarded.
Hejduk believes the autocross event will
be a hit.
“Most everybody who attends a fair likes
motorsports. I think people will like it. We’ve
been working really hard at it,” she said, noting
this is the first year for autocross for Derbydog
Inc. “In Ohio, the types of events at
fairs ebb and flow. We’re bringing autocross
back.”
The event is free to watch with paid admission
to the fair. Those who want a closeup
view can purchase a pit pass for $20. Pit
passes are free for ages 7 and younger.
As usual, the demolition derby is the last
event of fair week. This time, Derbydog Inc.
will put on the event.
Based in Madison in northeast Ohio, Derbydog
Inc. was established 14 years ago. Coowner
Jeremy Hejduk has been involved in
motorsports his entire life. His wife, Frances,
joined the business when the two got married
five years ago.
The company has a busy schedule this
year with 40 shows slated for the season.
They did 15 shows in 2018 and 30 shows last
year. They are excited to have the Madison
County Fair on their schedule this year.
“The demolition derby is open to anyone to
enter. We get a lot of locals, along with folks
who compete all over Ohio,” Frances said.
The cost to enter is $50. The schedule,
rules, and specifications can be found at
www.derbydogdemo.com/derbydog or call
(440) 479-0376. The event pays down three
places and awards trophies. The total purse
payout is $6,500.
Classes include: street stock full-size;
stock mini-van, truck, and SUV; street stock
compact; windshield; and powder puff (females
only).
Prior to the start of the derby, Derbydog
Inc. will host a Powerwheels Extravaganza
for kids. The event is free to enter; participants
must bring their own powerwheels.
Entrants must wear helmets (bike helmets
are allowed). Vehicles cannot be reinforced;
only the appearance of the vehicle can be
changed. Stock tires are required (duct tape
is allowed). Twelve volts is the maximum for
batteries. Seatbelts are recommended, and
passengers are permitted.
There are three events within the Powerwheels
Extravaganza. The figure-8 race is for
ages 5-8; the winner is the first driver to finish
10 laps. The demolition derby is for ages
3-8; everyone gets a prize. The drag race is for
ages 3-8; trophies go to first-place finishers.
The Extravaganza serves as crowd
warmup, lasting about 15 minutes total before
the official demolition derby begins.
Derby night is July 15. The pit opens at 4
p.m. for registration and inspection. The
Powerwheels Extravaganza will start around
7 p.m., followed by the derby.
The event is free to watch with paid admission
to the fair. Those who want a closeup
view can purchase a pit pass for $25. Pit
passes are free for ages 7 and younger.
Pig scramble & pedal pulls
Tri-Green Interstate Equipment
is hosting two fair events
that are sure to be entertaining—a
pig scramble and pedals pulls for
both children and adults.
Pig Scramble
It’s been many, many years
since the fair last hosted a pig
scramble. It’s back and scheduled
for 5 p.m. July 9. The event will
take place inside a fenced-off area
near the beer garden.
The area will be wetted down.
Approximately 50 pigs will be let
loose. Then, by age category, children
and adults will scramble
after the pigs, trying to grab ribbons
tied to the pigs’ tails. The
pigs likely will weigh about 50
pounds each—small enough to be
speedy.
The first person in each age
group to successfully grab a ribbon
will be declared that age group’s
winner. Winners receive a $100
cash prize. The age categories are:
6-8, 9-10, 11-13, 14-17, and 18 and
older.
There is no cost to enter. Registration
starts at 4 p.m. the day
of the scramble. All entrants must
sign a waiver.
“And bring a change of clothes
because it’s going to be muddy.
That’s what a pig scramble is all about—
mud,” said Judy Green, a fairboard member
and co-owner of Tri-Green.
Tri-Green is sponsoring the pig scramble
as another option for youth to get involved in
the fair.
“They don’t have to be in 4-H or FFA.
Anybody is welcome to enter. Adults are welcome,
too,” Green said.
Pedal Pulls
The Buckeye State Sanctioned Pedal
Tractor Pullers returns to host not only kiddie
pedal pulls but adult pulls, as well. The
fun is scheduled for July 15. Registration
starts at 2 p.m. The kids’ pulls start at 3 p.m.
The adult pulls follow.
“The adult part is new for us,” said Green.
“It’s something we thought might work. We
think it will be fun to see adults doing it.”
The adult pulls are open to ages 12 and
older. Entrants compete in age categories.
Ribbons go to the top two pullers in each category.
The registration fee is $10; half of
The strain of pulling a 35-pound weight starts to
show on the face of Robbie Butler at last year’s kiddie
pedal pull. The London resident “pulled” off a firstplace
“For the adults, we basically take the engine
out of a garden tractor and put pedals
on it,” said Gary Daiber, owner of Buckeye
State Pedal Tractor Pullers.
While the adult pulls are all for fun, the
kiddie pulls include the chance to advance to
state and even national competition.
The kiddie pulls are open to ages 4-11.
The top three pullers for each age get trophies
and are invited to the Ohio pull that
takes place at the Hartford Independent
Fair in Croton in August. Top pullers at
state can move on to the national pull at the
Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota, in
September.
There is no cost to enter the kiddie pull at
the Madison County Fair. Each child who
participates gets a ribbon.
The Buckeye State Sanctioned Pedal
Tractor Pullers are endorsed by the National
Pedal Pullers Association. For details, visit
they judge. Here, Hines checks the eggs for
cleanliness, irregularities, size, and calcium deposits,
then ranks them in order of grade.
