Issue 352
July 2023
Welcome to the latest issue of The Garage.
Our issue this month is dominated
with news from Automechanika
Birmingham, who closed their
doors on their exhibition earlier this
month.
I’m sure those of you who attended will
agree, it was a great event with full halls
each day and record numbers of visitors.
We don’t get that many chances through
the year to meet up with our subscribers,
so this was very much the highlight of the
show for us, I think its fair to say that our
stand was busy from when the exhibition
opened to when is closed. Thank you to
everyone who came to say hello.
Elsewhere in the magazine we have
usual features and news and look out for a
competition from our friends at Ring.
BIRMINGHAM
Following a four-year absence, a record
number of UK automotive professionals
came together at Automechanika
Birmingham, the most important trade
event for the UK automotive industry.
The 14,402 visitors record attendance
was an increase of 19% on the 2019
show, re-confirming that face-toface
B2B events are a critical way for
professionals to learn, do business and
network. The total of 6750 garages,
workshops and bodyshops, was also
unprecedented.
A total of 511 suppliers from 23 countries – including key
leading brands – showcased cutting-edge technology,
product innovations and services to senior decision makers
from end users to distributors, motor factors, retailers and
vehicle manufacturers.
Simon Albert, managing director of event organiser
Messe Frankfurt UK, said: “This is undoubtedly the best
Automechanika Birmingham to date – not just because
of the quality and number of attendees, but because of
the overwhelming positive feedback we have received
from exhibitors and visitors alike. This has been incredibly
rewarding for my team, our exhibitors, partners and
suppliers, who have all collaborated closely to deliver the
event.”
With the automotive industry facing huge legislation
changes, the exhibition hosted the first ever Automechanika
Birmingham keynote conference in addition to the 190
hours of free skills training, where visitors could debate
and address the big challenges facing the sector, from
electrification, the future of the MOT and all pertinent
topics.
The event also offered the perfect opportunity for all
levels of the industry – including students and the next
generation of talent – to upskill, with Automechanika
and expertise from the sector’s leading professionals.
More than 100 people joined the Women Automotive
Network drinks reception focusing on how to attract a
more diverse workforce.
The event provided double the amount of skills training
and practical demonstrations, with 192 hours of sessions
and interactive features such as the Modern Garage, Paint
& Spray Live, Collision Repair Live and the EV Training
Academy. And to celebrate success, there was the
Automechanika Birmingham Garage Awards, hosted by the
Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF)
and sponsored by LKQ Euro Car Parts.
Sentiments from Mark Field, chief executive of the IAAF
at the end of the awards, summarised the feeling of the
automotive industry when he thanked the organisers for
giving the automotive community a national scale event
they could be proud of.
With exhibitors delighted by the value derived from
the show, more than 80% of Automechanika Birmingham
2025 space has already been booked up – with many also
exhibiting at the UK Garage and Bodyshop Show, in June
2024, also located at Birmingham NEC.
The UK Garage and Bodyshop Event is designed as a
BM Catalysts optimistic about
ICE powertrain longevity
BM Catalysts is buoyant about the future of the combustion engine
following a successful exhibition at popular aftermarket trade show,
Automechanika Birmingham.
The leading supplier of hot end
emissions products focused on
future technology at the show,
following a launch of further selective
catalytic reduction (SCR) units prior to the
exhibition.
Continued high demand for BM
Catalysts’ range is reason for optimism
about the future of the combustion
powertrain, despite the looming ban on
new petrol and diesel vehicle sales in the
UK from 2030, the company says.
Mark Blinston, commercial director at
BM Catalysts, said: “With the current end
date for combustion engine-powered
vehicles approaching, we’re finding
drivers and technicians are looking for
longevity from their current vehicles and
are therefore opting for high-quality parts
available through the aftermarket to keep
those vehicles on the road for longer.
“Future legislative changes inspired by
aggressive emissions controls in Europe will
only serve to stimulate the UK marketplace.
BM Catalysts is ideally placed to provide
solutions to the air quality problem.”
Thousands of visitors walked through
the doors of the NEC for Automechanika
Birmingham 2023 to get the latest
updates from over 500 suppliers including
BM Catalysts. The brand displayed a
event including catalytic converter, diesel
GS Yuasa enjoy successful return
to Automechanika Birmingham
GS Yuasa, UK market leader for
automotive, motorcycle and
industrial batteries, launched and
showcased two new additions
to their auxiliary battery range
at this year’s Automechanika,
Birmingham. At the heart of the
stand was also a fantastic ‘Wishing
Tree’, where the manufacturer
encouraged visitors to share their
ideas as to how they could be
better served by their battery
supplier.
After a three-year hiatus, due to the Coronavirus pandemic,
visitors to the GS Yuasa stand were immersed in a world of
cutting-edge technology and ground-breaking automotive
solutions. The spotlight was on the newly introduced GYAUX9,
specifically designed for a wide range of Volvo vehicle types,
offering the optimum solution for their dual battery systems.
In addition, the GYAUX14 battery also joined the ever-growing
GS Yuasa Auxiliary range line up which is the widest of any
manufacturer and now features 12 dedicated batteries, with a
further 15 batteries listed as auxiliary fit options.
Highlighting their commitment to customer satisfaction
and environmental responsibility, GS Yuasa introduced their
‘Wishing Tree’ initiative at the exhibition. This interactive concept
encouraged visitors to share their ideas on how they could be
better served, while also contributing to a greener future. For
every wish received, GS Yuasa pledged to plant a tree, symbolising
their dedication to customer-centric innovation and sustainable
practices.
One of organisation’s key ambitions is to deliver world class
customer service, and by actively encouraging customers to share
their ideas, it enables the company to continuously improve and
surpass the highest level of service across all areas of the business.
Ultimately, putting the customer first to help exceed expectations.
James Hylton, Managing Director at GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK
said, “We are thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response
we received from visitors at Automechanika. The launch of our
GYAUX9 and GYAUX14 auxiliary batteries, as well as the showcase
of our YBX automotive range and YCX smart chargers, reaffirms
our position as market leader in the battery industry. We are also
very proud of our ‘Wishing Tree’ initiative, which demonstrates our
AUTOMECHANIKA
Opus IVS
A Resounding Success
for Diagnostics
Automechanika Birmingham 2023,
the UK’s largest automotive trade
exhibition, brought together over
1,000 exhibitors and 20,000 visitors
from around the world for three days
of networking, business opportunities,
and learning.
The event, held at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC)
from June 6-8 June, showcased the latest products,
technologies, and services in the automotive aftermarket
and supply chain, from parts and accessories to workshop
equipment and tools.
The latest technological advancements in diagnostics were
expertly demonstrated by Opus IVS, developers of the renowned
DriveProTM in-depth diagnostic tool and repair support offering
IVS 360TM. “Discussing and showing attendees first-hand how
having access to over 100 Master Technicians to resolve complex
vehicle faults is the key to workshop success was a highlight for
us.” Explains Karl Booth, Head of Sales for Opus IVS.
“Technologies are always evolving and are abundant in the
industry to pinpoint fault causes, but technicians will always
rely heavily on picking up the phone or Googling the actual
repair steps – IVS 360TM fully fulfils this requirement for our
customers.” Karl affirms.
The highlight of the event was the Innovation Awards,
which recognised some of the industry’s shinning automotive
professionals and independent workshops. The judges’ panel
included experts from the automotive industry and the winners
were selected based on their innovation, design, and practicality.
“The Innovation Awards demonstrated the strength and
importance of this rapidly evolving industry and its professionals
that strive for excellence.” Stated Karl.
Another key highlight of the exhibition was the discussion
surrounding electric vehicles. As the automotive industry rapidly
shifts towards a sustainable future, electric vehicles have become
increasingly popular. Automechanika Birmingham offered a great
insight into up-and-coming electric vehicle news.
Karl explains “We were so pleased to have had the opportunity
to discuss the latest industry trends, including the rise of EV
vehicles and EV technologies that are impacting our sector now.
Diagnosing and repairing EV and HEVs requires a technician to
attain very niche knowledge and practical skills. Opus IVS fully
endorses the IMI TechSafe campaign to ensure independent
garages meet the growing demand for electric vehicle
maintenance and repair. This essential campaign is bringing
automotive workshops together to ensure that technicians are
appropriately trained to service, maintain, and repair electric
vehicles safely.”
Opus IVS’ customers benefit not only from time saving leading
diagnostics, but also from direct repair guidance from their team
of OEM Trained Master Technicians. IVS 360TM from Opus IVS,
is an invaluable diagnostic support resource uniquely designed
to empower technicians to repair vehicles with confidence.
Through its dedicated team of OEM-Trained Master Technicians,
the Opus IVS team provide brand-specific diagnostic support to
technicians and workshop owners all over the world.
Customers can quickly and easily request support from the
IVS 360TM team directly from their DriveProTM device as well as
access vital training to gain the most from their diagnostic tools,
ensuring that they gain the competitive edge.
Overall, the Automechanika Birmingham 2023 show was a
resounding success, showcasing the best of the UK’s automotive
industry and providing a valuable forum for businesses to
connect, learn, and grow.
Karl concludes ‘Automechanika was outstanding this year, and
just shows how well our industry is bouncing back – the show
was a resounding success for the automotive industry and in
particular for diagnostics and diagnostic services.”
To find out more about Opus IVS’ solutions, garages can get in
NEWS
Lubricant products quarantined
and removed from sale following
VLS investigations
The Verification of Lubricants Specifications (VLS) has recently brought
several cases concerning low temperature properties to a conclusion,
resulting in affirmative action from the companies involved.
Mike Bewsey, Chairman of VLS
Case VLS010183 concerned a complaint
regarding Westway Lubricants 75W-90
Synthetic Gear Oil about the product’s
compliance with SAE J306 regarding low
temperature properties and its claim to
meet MB 235.8.
VLS independently procured a sample of
the product within the UK and tested it for
low temperature properties against ASTM
D2983. The test results demonstrated
that the product did not comply with the
SAE 75W specification detailed in the SAE
J306 standard, as it turned solid before
reaching -40 °C.
In response to the investigation,
Westway Lubricants quarantined all stock
and arranged an uplift of products from
the warehouse with the supplier. They also
changed supplier and removed reference
to the MB 235.8 specification from the
product label.
Case VLS010184 concerned a complaint
regarding Fanfaro 75W-90 Max 6 GL-5
Gear Oil, a synthetic gear oil suitable for
use in all types of manual transmissions,
passenger cars, heavy duty highway and
off road vehicles, and its compliance
with SAE J306 regarding low temperature
properties.
VLS independently procured a sample of
the product within the UK and tested it for
low temperature properties against ASTM
D2983. The test results indicated that
the product did not meet the SAE 75W
specification as defined in the standard
SAE J306 when measured using the ASTM
D2983 method.
Fanfaro immediately quarantined the
product and arranged for the disposal
of all stock in their warehouse. They
contacted their supplier, which arranged
a reblend of the product and has
committed to sending VLS the new batch
test result as soon as it has been received.
Case VLS010185 concerned a complaint
regarding Granville 75W-90 Fully Synthetic
Manual Transmission Fluid concerning its
compliance with SAE J306.
VLS independently procured a sample
of the product within the UK and tested
it for low temperature properties against
ASTM D2983, which indicated that
the product was not compliant due to
excessive viscosity at -40°C and, therefore
not meeting the requirements of an SAE
75W grade as defined in the SAE J306
standard.
In response to the investigation,
Granville advised VLS that it has changed
its supplier since the product was blended
in 2020 and filled in 2021. They have also
changed their filling procedures and
moved to automated blending, which they
believe has solved the issue, which they
believe was due to batch contamination,
as the batch VLS tested was blended
and filled before automated blending
was introduced. Granville also checked
all batches subsequently manufactured
and stated that they are all compliant
according to their testing.
Mike Bewsey, Chairman of VLS,
commented, “The outcome of these
cases demonstrate that VLS plays a vital
role in ensuring that lubricant products
are fit for purpose and can deliver
what they claim. Products that do not
comply with specifications regarding low
temperature properties may not provide
adequate circulation. This can lead to
accelerated wear when equipment is
started from cold and will not support
fuel efficiency expectations. We thank the
companies involved in these investigations
for uplifting and disposing of affected
products to protect end users and
communicating their process changes to
ensure future products are compliant.”
cases currently under investigation, please
THE BEST
JUST GOT
BETTER
Ring upgrades
its MAGFlex Twist
Following its policy to consistently develop
and improve, Ring has upgraded its MAGFlex
Twist to conform with EU laws that are
coming into force and provide a new,
better and brighter inspection lamp for
professionals in a host of different industries.
In line with EU law that states that by the
end of 2024 all consumer electronics must
use USB-C charging, Ring has adapted its
RIL3600HP, or more commonly known as
the MAGFlex Twist, to comply with these
new laws and has therefore launched the
RIL3600C. While first and foremost this new
model fits into this EU law, USB-C charging
has rapidly become the standard charging
option and naturally Ring wants to offer this
preferred method.
As Ring was adapting the MAGFlex Twist,
the product and development team decided
to continue to upgrade this lamp alongside
its new charging port. Consequently, instead
of just one light output, it now has two –
high (450 lumens) and low (250 lumens).
The new model also has an updated charge
status indicator, so it’s clear to the user
how much battery life the lamp has and if it
needs additional charging. Furthermore, if
it does need charging, it will no longer take
four and a half hours: with this new model, it
will take just two and a half hours to charge
fully.
To ensure it’s as compact as possible, and
therefore easier to move around, something
that is essential in many industries, the
RIL3600C is slightly smaller than the
previous model but keeps the magnetic
base and rear, so users can easily attach
it to metal surfaces and be hands free,
although it also comes with a hook if there is
nowhere to magnetically attach it. It is also
robust as it is IP65 / IK07 compliant, and has
a waterproof design and construction, so it
can be used in all environments.
Available at motor factors, builder and
electrical merchants with a RRP of £39.99
OPINION
Anyone for a
ROAD TRIP?
So, who enjoys a road trip?
I love ‘em, any excuse to plan a journey, load the car and get away.
The key to a good road trip? A decent and appropriate car.
Going to Wales with the family, I’ll take the 740 Sport please.
Children are all young, need all the space we can get.
How about Europe for the Easter Bank Holiday? Ah, that’ll be the
750 Sport. Still need the boot space and the room inside.
How about Le-Mans with my best mate? Obviously that’ll be a
TVR one year, a Triumph Stag the next. British, convertible and V8
powered with a manual ‘box. What else could you choose?
How about a drive down to Barcelona? The Guv’nor and I take
an Insignia Elite, the diesel helped manage the costs at over
50mpg and 500 miles to a tank.
Scotland for (another) Bank Holiday get away? 530i Sport.
Children are slightly older, so we don’t need so much boot space,
it handles so well on the twisties and they watched BGT finals
whilst we drove back home!
Euro Disney for a surprise birthday trip? M5 obviously. Why
wouldn’t you? (Because you could get caught speeding at 172 and
all the legal issues that brings!)
How about a last minute getaway to the French coast? X5 4.8iS
wouldn’t be the obvious choice, but it’s all I had at the time. That
would consume fuel as quickly as it covered ground . . . very!
Isle Of White? Something smaller than the 760 LWB we took,
that was just too long!
What do they all have in common? The ability to consume huge
mileage, at a rate of speed, in comfort and safety.
The very first road trip we made was in 1995 to visit family in
Cologne, Germany. I’d just sold my Opel Monza and bought a Rover
SD1 Vitesse as it had two extra doors and we had just had our first
child. It also started off a tradition that we still do to this day.
We got to the port of Dover to catch the ferry and when we
got there we were faced with a problem. How do we heat up our
baby’s milk? It was a night crossing and the restaurant was closed
so we couldn’t ask them, so I did the next best thing. I opened
the bonnet and put her milk bottle in the engine bay, near the
By Onkar Chahal
exhaust. We then drove to the staging lane and waited a few
more minutes before checking. Sure enough the bottle was warm
enough for her to drink, but that got me thinking what else could I
heat up in there?
I checked the food bag and found a pack of sausage rolls and
some hot cross buns, so I threw them in there and waited. When
we parked up in the ferry I popped the bonnet, took the packages
out and we went upstairs. Found some seats, settled in for the
crossing and had some very hot food!
From then on, whenever we catch the ferry, or lately the train,
we always throw some food in the engine bay which we retrieve
as we cross. It’s always warm and it always get stares from the cars
behind!
So next time you have an opportunity for a road trip, pack
some sausage rolls and place them in the engine bay. It has to be
the most environmentally friendly way of heating food on the go.
However, that tradition may get harder in the future, electric cars
don’t have engines.
How will we heat our food up then?
Obvious. I’ll take the Quattroporte!
Autoelectro catering spike in
demand for classic car applications
A 1958 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud and 1969 Jaguar E-Type are just two ‘reman and return’ examples that Autoelectro has already encountered
during this classic car season. As the rotating electrics remanufacturer tackles a deluge of enquiries, Harnek Bhogal reveals why the supplier is
the “go-to” for many customers:
“We have remarkable pedigree in catering the rarest and hardestto-find
applications. Naturally, this means that a lot of our
enquiries are specialist and classics make-up a significant part of
that – particularly this time of year!”
Swing in classic car momentum
Analysing its own data, Autoelectro has observed a new trend
in the marketplace; it believes there has been a weighty shift
in attitude towards classic car motoring. Harnek elaborated by
pointing to the real-world impact of various and seismic events in
recent years.
Harnek said: “The world is continuing to recover from the
COVID-19 pandemic, while recent supply chain disruptions as
a result of the war in Ukraine, economic sanctions of Russia
and high inflation rates have affected the economic balance of
society.
“Consequently, we have found that some consumers with
disposable income for classics have now taken the plunge and
decided to live the dream, as their buying options for a new car
and the lead time associated with that have been narrowed.”
Autoelectro is primed to handle this increased demand; it
boasts a warehouse facility that provides outstanding availability,
meaning a starter motor for a Porsche 911 Turbo (930 model)
(1977-onwards) or alternator for an Austin Metro (1990-onwards)
can be with the customer the next day.
On the rare occasion where the unit isn’t in stock, Autoelectro
possesses the ability to offer a ‘reman and return’ service,
or, even better, it may have an old core already in stock to
manufacture the part. Ultimately, the supplier has the tools and
flexibility to deliver for the customer and keep their classic on the
road!
What can go wrong?
With any breakdown or issue with a classic vehicle, there can
be a combination of factors that contribute to the fault: agerelated
wear and tear, inadequate maintenance, or outdated
components are just some of the likely causes.
Autoelectro recommends regular inspection, professional
maintenance and use of quality replacement parts. The
remanufacturer believes that, with best practice processes,
classic car owners will enjoy many miles of trouble-free motoring.
To illustrate its prowess and offer an insight into what can go
wrong for a classic car motorist, from both a starter motor and
alternator perspective, here are some common faults:
l Faulty solenoids: Over time, a solenoid’s internal components
can wear away or become corroded which can lead to issues.
Moisture, dirt or excessive heat can also contribute towards this
l Worn brushes: As vehicles age, brushes can wear down and
lose their ability to make proper contact with the commutator,
which can result in intermittent starting problems
l Wiring or connection issues: Classic cars can have dated
wiring systems that develop into larger issues as they get older.
Loose, corroded, damaged or rusted wiring and connections can
prevent the starter motor from receiving the required power,
again, potentially leading to intermittent starting faults
l Faulty diodes: Diodes can fail on any vehicle for a number of
reasons, but due to the age and general use (high mileage) of
classics, it is more common due to wear and tear. If a diode fails,
it can hamper the alternator’s ability to produce sufficient output
required for the vehicle, leading to charging issues
l Worn brushes/slip rings: Similar to the brushes point above.
They can wear over time, leading to reduced charging capacity
or intermittent charging. Other external factors, such as dust and
debris, can accelerate brush/slip ring wear
Ben invites automotive family to sign
up to two new fundraising events and
make a life-changing difference
Automotive industry charity, Ben, is inviting the automotive
community to take on Benathlon in September and host
a Ben’s Big Breakfast in October to raise vital funds and
support those who are struggling or in crisis.
To take part in the second Benathlon, participants will exercise
in their own way for 30 minutes each day for the 30 days of
September and raise £30 for Ben. Participants can choose how
they complete the challenge, for example, by walking, cycling,
running, swimming, or even by horse riding or skipping!
Benathlon runs twice a year and aims to improve participants’
mental and physical health while also fundraising to support
automotive colleagues to get back on track. A total of 130 people
took part in March and September’s event is already shaping up
to be bigger and better than the last with many people already
having signed up.
Ben’s Big Breakfast is in its third year, running from 9th-15th
October, and invites automotive industry companies to host a
breakfast to fundraise for Ben.
Breakfast brings together employees, customers and families
to share the most important meal of the day, aiming to connect
with each other and check in, supporting each other’s mental
health. A total of 158 companies took part in last year’s Ben’s Big
Breakfast and the charity hopes for this year to be even bigger
and better.
Gulf Lubricants
announces new
coolants and
brake fluids
for hybrid and
electric vehicles
Gulf Lubricants has announced a
new range of electric and hybrid
powertrain coolants and brake
fluids, eLEC, offering tailored
products to vehicles with electrified
powertrains, as take up of fully
electric and hybrid vehicles
increases.
The eLEC polyglycol-based brake fluid has
been released to ensure optimal braking
performance in electric vehicles (EVs).
The fluid has been developed with the
requirements of a modern EV and hybrid
braking system in mind, such as a high
boiling point and high corrosion protection,
for optimal performance alongside a
regenerative braking system.
Despite the introduction of regenerative
braking on EVs, the brake system still requires
a fluid with a high boiling point as the system
is placed under high demand if the battery is
full. When regenerative braking is in action,
brakes will be used less frequently, increasing
the need for corrosion resistance.
Gulf eLEC coolant helps keep the batteries
at optimum temperature. The thermal
management fluid guards against overheating
and offers reliable protection against frost
and deposits.
The new products are available from the
Titan Group of Motor Factors, as part of its
UK Partnership agreement with Rossmore
Lubricants – the Official Importer &
Distributor of Gulf Lubricants in the UK.
Formed by experienced motor factor
LOYALTY PAYS OFF FOR
TRUCKEAST APPRENTICE
SCHEME
(left to right): TruckEast Group Aftersales Director Martyn Clipston,
Ben Daniels - Depot Supervisor (TE Fleet), TruckEast Managing
Director Harley Coulson
TruckEast celebrates the achievements of their
TE Fleet Depot Supervisor who successfully completed
his apprentice loyalty scheme, earning himself a large
lump sum bonus.
Ben Daniels began working at TruckEast as an apprentice Scania
technician in 2013. After graduating with two-industry recognised
qualifications in 2016, he continued to develop his skills as an
HGV technician, including achieving his class 1 licence and training
as a breakdown technician. In 2021, after spending time within
the workshop office, Ben stepped into the role he has today,
Depot Supervisor at TE Fleet Corby.
TruckEast’s current loyalty scheme was introduced with the
aspiration to attract the best young talent into the business. And
most importantly, retain them. It rewards hard work and loyalty
and begins the first month an apprentice technician joins the
business. Each month, a payment is made into a savings account
over ten years; at the end of which they receive a pay-out.
Marking the first payment under the new scheme, Ben
celebrated amongst his team with a presentation from the
Directors, lunch and a Scania-themed cake.
Group Aftersales Director, Martyn Clipston comments; “We’re
delighted with the progress Ben has made within TruckEast,
developing into his current role as Depot Supervisor at TE Fleet
Corby. Our apprenticeship programme has had some real
success stories over the years and Ben’s is a great example. With
this years’ intake we will have 40 apprentices currently across the
business; an investment that continues our long-term strategy to
grow our own technicians, but also, drive the ability to promote
from within. We focus on continual training and development for
all our staff, and I am very proud of how far Ben has come in the
first 10 years of what I hope is a long career with TruckEast.”
Ben Daniels at TE Fleet Corby workshop
“I can’t recommend TruckEast’s Scania Apprenticeship scheme
enough. It is the best out there - you’re working for a main dealer
business with family values. As well as the qualifications, I’ve
learnt some great life skills, have a fantastic team around me and
the loyalty scheme, well that’s the icing on the cake. It makes all
the hard work even more rewarding,” adds Ben.
Ben plans to spend his well-deserved bonus on home
improvements and a holiday.
and comfort, to allow drivers to excel on the road, whatever the
destination.
The tyre has been developed and tested to vehicle manufacturer
OE standards, equal to a premium runflat tyre. Davanti has gone
above and beyond the standard requirements for runflat testing to
ensure optimal performance. In addition to the standard drum test,
this includes;
● Pop-on pressure, ensuring that the tyres are easy to mount
onto and dismount from the rim - a typical challenge for runflat
tyres - whilst maintaining sufficient force on the wheel for reliable
operation.
● RPA sensitivity test, ensuring the tyre is well within the tolerance
bounds of TPMS sensors, this test determines the variance in
circumference between inflated and uninflated states, for vehicles
that rely on this technology to detect that a tyre has deflated.
● Rim roll-off test, ensuring that the deflated tyre stays mounted
to the rim when undergoing lateral forces, a factor that cannot be
determined by the standard drum test alone. This test was carried
out by performing J turns with a tyre under zero pressure to ensure
it remains mounted to the rim as required for OE standards.
Key features of the Protoura Sport DSP Runflat which allow the
tyre to deliver leading performance and balance the technical
attributes of run flat tyres include:
● Self-supporting internal sidewall to support the weight of the
vehicle and retain the tyre structure when it loses air as a result of
a puncture, allowing motorists to safely travel to a nearby garage or
place of repair.
l Lateral and transverse load support when operating at zero
inflation pressure.
l Continued and safe operation at speeds of up to 50mph whilst
These engineering innovations don’t compromise the performance
of the Protoura Sport however. Instead they complement the
Protoura Sport’s solid outer block pattern for precise steering
response, wide longitudinal grooves to enable efficient water
dispersion and solid circumferential centre grooves for straight line
traction.
Davanti Tyres’ General Manager Peter Cross comments:
“Expanding the Protoura Sport range to include runflat technology
means drivers can enjoy our ultra-high performance tyres with the
peace of mind that should they suffer a puncture, they have
time get to a garage or find a safe, level area to change the
tyre.
“Also, thanks to the team’s incredible work to engineer a
UHP tread pattern alongside runflat technology which has
been developed to a premium standard, means we have a
tyre which is a leading benchmark for runflats that offers
performance you can trust.”
The tyre will be available in sizes 17” to 21”.
Streamlining
Efficiency and
Security in the
Automotive Industry
FEATURE
Keytracker offers an innovative approach to key management, replacing the outdated
and error-prone manual systems that have long plagued the automotive industry.
Keytracker simplifies the process of tracking and organising keys, ensuring that
vehicles are easily accessible and ready for use when needed. Gone are the days of
wasting valuable time searching for misplaced keys or dealing with the frustrations of
disorganisation.
Security will always be a paramount
concern for any business, especially
considering the rising instances of
vehicle theft and unauthorised access.
Keytracker addresses these concerns headon
by providing robust security measures
that significantly minimise the risk of theft or
misuse through each system. By integrating
these cutting-edge security features,
Keytracker delivers peace of mind to
automotive businesses and their customers.
Keytracker’s mechanical Peg-in, Pegout
Board, can be stored in their Police-
Approved secure cabinets to offer efficient
security and organisation for the customers.
The system allows authorised personnel
to identify vehicles quickly and easily,
eliminating time spent searching for the
right key while helping reduce customer
wait times. In correspondence to this,
Keytracker’s Magnetic Block Systems is a
simple key storage and vehicle identification
solution, ideally suited to vehicle repair
outlets, quickly identifying the vehicle in a
crowded yard or storage area. On the other
hand, if you’re looking for a simple organised
solution then Keytracker’s Keytag system is
a numbered board used to hang up vehicle
keys and works cohesively with the Block
System.
For further efficiency and security,
Keytracker’s electronic systems use the
latest software and state-of-the-art
hardware so that customers can identify
the present and past of both vehicles and
users. The software sends automatic alerts
and reports to improve management,
ensure smooth operation, and increase
profitability. In addition, Keytracker’s
Key Control Software (KCS) partnered
with the mechanical system enables
real-time monitoring of key movements,
quickly identifying any inconsistencies
or discrepancies. Moreover, automated
notifications and alerts ensure that staff
members are promptly informed about
the status of keys, eliminating unnecessary
delays and enhancing overall productivity.
Furthermore, Keytracker’s comprehensive
audit trails and reporting capabilities
enable meticulous tracking of key usage.
This feature is a deterrent to potential
misconduct, as employees know that their
actions can be easily traced. Consequently,
the systems instil a culture of accountability
and responsibility among staff members,
reinforcing a secure and professional work
environment.
In addition to improving efficiency and
security, Keytracker offers tangible cost
savings for automotive businesses. By
reducing the time spent on key management
tasks, companies can allocate their
resources more effectively, increasing
productivity and profitability. The system’s
ability to prevent theft and unauthorised
use helps avoid costly insurance claims and
vehicle replacements, resulting in substantial
long-term savings.
As technology continues to shape the
automotive landscape, Keytracker stands
at the forefront of revolutionising key
management practices. Its comprehensive
features and focus on efficiency and security
make it an indispensable tool for automotive
businesses seeking to thrive in an
increasingly competitive market. Embracing
Keytracker is a commitment to providing
all customers with a seamless, secure, and
superior experience.
Testimonials
“The best thing about the Keytracker
system is the safety feature and it’s synced
to Tesla’s ERP System which has made
our day-to-day operations easier. With
more than 40 staff using the system each
day, we have saved approximately 10-15
minutes a day. I would recommend the
same system for other departments within
the automotive industry and not only in the
workshop/service sector.” - Tesla.
“The system makes things a lot more
organised, and process driven as we can
control it. It is used by our 50+ staff and
Keytracker has improved our day-to-day
operations as it is great quality, excellent
service and has a great range of products.
The best thing about Keytracker are
the lovely people we have arranging our
orders.”– Arden Maidstone BMW.
Used hybrid sales surge ahead of diesel
in May for the first time reports INDICATA
Jon Mitchell, INDICATA UK’s
Group Sales Director
Hybrid cars became the UK’s second most
popular used car fuel type in May behind
petrol according to INDICATA’s latest Market
Watch insights report.
Hybrid sales accounted for 20.6% of
used car sales storming ahead of diesel
which fell to third place for the very first
time with 18.5%. Used petrol cars remained
the nation’s favourite with market share of
54.7% while EVs comprised just 6.2%.
It reinforces just how quickly the used
market is currently changing and how many
EV customers are opting to buy a used
hybrid at a lower price point. Used EV prices
also fell again in May by 3% against an overall
market price fall of 0.5%.
EVs Market Days’ Supply (MDS), which
represents available used car supply divided
by its current sales rate fell in May from 73
to 60 days. It reinforces that the recent fall
in used EV prices is having a positive impact
on sales, but MDS still remains higher than
hybrid at 53 days and both petrol and diesel
at 44 days.
More good news for EVs in May was that
the Tesla Model 3 was the fastest-selling
used car overall which shows that a fall in
prices has helped contribute to a growth in
sales for the brand.
Meanwhile the UK’s top-selling models
remain very consistent with VW Golf still
in first place ahead of the Ford Fiesta and
Mercedes A-Class.
“The used market is moving on a monthly
basis, and it is interesting to see hybrid sales
on the rise. We believe those drivers who
haven’t gone for an EV currently have bought
a hybrid instead as they provide some of
the benefits of moving to electric at a lower
price point. The demand for EVs continues
to slowly improve as prices fall and this is
a good longer-term sign for the market’s
overall move to electric,” explained Jon
Mitchell, INDICATA UK’s Group Sales Director.
NEWS
The comprehensive
garage equipment solution
from Hella Gutmann
The modern independent workshop
needs a wide range of equipment to
enable technicians to undertake and
correctly execute many of the jobs that
need to be completed, whether during
general servicing, repair work or when
carrying out annual MoT testing. To assist
them to complete a first rate job, Hella
Gutmann can provide the solution in three
key areas: diagnostic tools, the calibration
of advanced driver assistance systems
(ADAS) and headlight alignment.
Diagnostic tools
Hella Gutmann has made its name by
developing diagnostic tools of the highest
quality, but also by enabling workshops
to access them affordably, by providing
maximum flexibility with a number of
options when it comes to both the
hardware and software configurations.
Taking hardware, alongside its core
mega macs range, Hella Gutmann has
three particularly effective tools that
ensure independents can compete
with the vehicle manufacturer’s (VM)
franchised dealer networks: the mega
macs X, macsRemote and the MT-HV
measurement module.
The mega macs X is the most advanced
diagnostic tool Hella Gutmann has
ever developed. It incorporates the
processor, diagnostic software and
integrated diagnostic protocols, which
includes among others, the CAN FD and
DoIP for recent vehicle models such as
Škoda Octavia, Volvo XC 90 and Golf 8
of Volkswagen, and communicates on a
wireless basis.
The macsRemote allows independents
to legitimately access VMs own data, to
diagnose diagnostic faults and activate
solutions from the moment a vehicle
leaves the showroom, and so bridges
the data gap between their existing
diagnostic tools and the latest new model
registrations.
The MT-HV module has been specifically
created for work on electric and hybrid
vehicles and utilises permanently
integrated high voltage measurement
technology. However, it also incorporates
a slot where the more familiar MT-56
and MT-77 low voltage modules can be
inserted, which transforms the MT-HV into
a wireless measurement module for both
low and high voltage measurements.
Another major challenge when
undertaking diagnostic testing on newer
vehicles is cyber security management
(CSM), which is the way that VMs are
increasingly attempting to prevent
independents gaining access to their
vehicles’ systems.
However, to help workshops to
communicate with these and future
vehicles, Hella Gutmann implemented
the CSM function in its mega macs
range of diagnostic devices in 2020. This
allows verified users to diagnose secured
vehicles without accessing the VMs portal
and is a genuine multi-brand function that
is being successively expanded.
ADAS
The majority of businesses now realise
that whenever they undertake work on
a vehicle that has a direct effect on its
steering geometry – wheel alignment,
steering & suspension replacement,
etc. – an ADAS camera/radar calibration
must be carried out. Therefore, they must
supplement their diagnostic equipment
with a calibration tool.
As the diagnostic device and the
calibration tool must be compatible,
investment needs to be well-considered
because the model coverage of the
diagnostic software and the associated
calibration device will dictate whether the
work is cost effective. This is where Hella
Gutmann’s original analogue CSC-Tool
SE and CSC-Mobile, as well as the most
recently introduced, CSC-Tool Digital,
show their advantages.
With outstanding vehicle model
coverage, the CSC-Tool, in common
with the easily transported CSC-Mobile
solution, in conjunction with a Hella
Gutmann mega macs diagnostic device,
has a proven track record in the UK,
Ireland and throughout Europe. It is for
28 THE GARAGE
NEWS
good reason that the world’s leading
auto glass networks rely on the German
equipment. In addition to the calibration
of front cameras, long-range radar and
lidar, the comprehensive modular CSC
tool system also allows calibration of
360° and rear cameras, as well as 24
GHz radar sensors, and thanks to its
ongoing developments, Hella Gutmann’s
calibration hardware and software remains
close to the vehicle manufacturers’ rapid
technology advances and short model
cycles.
The CSC-Tool Digital is the company’s
latest calibration offering, which does
everything the other CSC tools do, but
faster and more efficiently. It also has
some additional benefits to offer, such
as there is no need for the large-format
front camera targets.
Headlight Adjustment
Correctly set headlights are vital for
motorists to drive safely in poor light
conditions. Misalignment will directly
impact the headlights’ effectiveness by
reducing the amount of light actually on
the road in front of the vehicle. Incorrect
alignment is also an MoT test failure and,
particularly as many projector lights are
now extremely bright, can cause excessive
dazzling to the eyes of other road users.
Despite these facts, along with
blown bulbs, misaligned headlights
are a common sight during the hours
of darkness. Therefore, as a matter of
course, workshops should offer a lighting
and alignment check for all customers.
This would not only help reduce the
number of accidents caused by defective
lighting but provide workshops with a
legitimate additional revenue stream.
To make this opportunity a reality for
workshops, Hella Gutmann offers the SEG
beamsetter series, a new generation of
alignment tools that can measure and
adjust even the most advanced headlight
systems, quickly and efficiently. However,
reflecting the fact that the requirements
of workshops vary, the SEG range comes
in several different specifications.
While each features a digital luxmeter
to precisely calculate the glare rating of
the low beam and the light intensity of
the high, as well as a high quality fresnel
lens, the top of the range SEG V also
comes with automatic levelling, an 8.4”
touchscreen, vehicle recognition via car
history and an USB interface, to provide
the complete solution for every current
lighting configuration from halogen to
Matrix LED high beam assist.
16V Lithium batteries
are now being fitted
to passenger cars
As an industry that works almost exclusively with 12V
batteries, and mostly lead acid batteries, the introduction
of 16V lithium batteries in passenger vehicles represents an
enormous change.
Perhaps not so surprising is that such a change is coming
from Tesla, as the new model Y has exactly this; a 16V
Lithium battery.
With the Model Y being one of the best-selling electric
vehicles in the UK, this is big news. And although most
garages may not expect to see these cars for a few years,
this presents an immediate challenge for businesses that
provide services to new cars early in their lives: windscreen
repairers (especially for ADAS), body shops, and used car
sales. As just about all battery chargers and other related
equipment are 12V or 24V and undoubtedly cannot be
used with a 16V battery, what happens when a dead or
undercharged 16V lithium battery arrives in your workshop?
GYS has launched a 16V Lithium solution
GYS are the technology leader in battery charging, and
their well-known GYSFlash range of Battery Support Units
now features a mode for Lithium 16V. All CNT (Connected
versions) of the GYSFlash have this function, and are
available in 50A, 100A & 120A outputs.
One of the key benefits of the GYS Connected technology
units is that existing units owned by customers can be
updated free of charge by GYS.
STEERINGANDSUSPENSION
Comline EV steering and
suspension range evolves with
Volkswagen ID3 and Hyundai Ioniq
Comline Auto Parts is developing its steering and suspension range for
alternatively fuelled vehicles apace – perfectly illustrated by two new vehicle
spotlights that focus on the Volkswagen ID3 and Hyundai Ioniq
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and
Traders, more than a quarter of a million new BEVs
were sold last year, with only petrol-powered models
proving more popular. As technicians begin to receive more
EVs into their workshops, Comline is keen to stress that it
has the components to bolster confidence and peace of
mind when repairing or servicing these vehicles.
On the popular Volkswagen ID3, for example, it now
supplies the ball joint (CBJ7323), stabiliser links (CSL5150
and CSL6150), rack end (CTR3465) and tie rod end
(CTRE4053). Meanwhile, the award-winning brand also
offers quality replacement parts for the Hyundai Ioniq,
namely control arms (CCA1455L and CCA2455R), a rod/
strut stabiliser (CSL7264), stabiliser link (CSL7353), tie
rod axle joint (CTR3332) and tie rod ends (CTRE1208 and
CTRE2208).
Change suspension components pairs!
The rule for replacing suspension parts in pairs remains the
same – whether it’s an EV or vehicle with an ICE! Fitting
new parts on one side and keeping existing components on
the other is likely to cause premature failure, affect geometry of
the vehicle, as well as its handling and instability. It is also likely to
increase the potential of a road traffic incident.
The RAC, citing DVSA data, claimed that suspension defects
account for more than one in 10 MOT failures – the second
most popular failure behind lighting and signalling. Therefore,
Comline believes it is best practice to give particular attention
to suspension components during servicing – especially given
the safety critical nature of these components and the potential
implications of their failure.
Why choose Comline steering and suspension?
Rigorously scrutinised for full tension, lifetime performance,
compression and hardness, welding penetration, as well as
salt spray and mud tested, Comline leaves distributors and
technicians in no doubt that it is an ideal partner when it comes
to steering and suspension.
Furthermore, as a Premier Data Supplier, Comline can be relied
upon to deliver the ‘gold standard’ for its 14,000 part number
portfolio, which includes, not only steering and suspension, but
filtration and braking too.
NEWS
Ecobat Battery’s solutions
for a developing market
What’s happening and why?
Since the AGM (absorbent glass mat) battery
was adopted as the original equipment
(OE) fitment for micro-hybrid (start/stop
enabled) applications, pan-European battery
distributor Ecobat Battery has been at
the forefront in expressing the need for
independent workshops to be fully up to
speed when it comes to both the batteries
and the associated technology present in
these vehicles.
However, although the vehicle
manufacturers (VMs) had made AGM,
and subsequently, the enhanced flooded
battery (EFB) their primary power storage
solution, primarily because motorists chose
to override the start/stop function in their
vehicles, these batteries were not failing
at the age that was originally anticipated.
This anomaly was simply because they
were only making a fraction of the number
of starts they were designed to, so were
lasting far longer than anticipated, but due
to the combined effects of changing vehicle
design making overriding the start/stop
function more difficult, reduced vehicle
usage brought about by lockdowns during
the pandemic and the passing of time, the
landscape has changed significantly.
Research undertaken by Ecobat Battery,
which is a major distributor for, among
other brands, Exide and VARTA, both key OE
suppliers of AGM and EFB batteries, reveals
that although in 2019 just 6% and 1% of
battery replacements were AGM and EFB
respectively, by 2022 the figures were 15%
and 5%. Moreover, this trend will continue
and is forecast to achieve double-digit
growth every year to reach 28% and 12% in
2027, just four years from now.
This development is reflected in the
product portfolio of the aforementioned
battery manufacturers, with both Exide and
VARTA significantly increasing the AGM and
EFB range they offer, not just to address the
need for replacement batteries for start/
stop vehicle applications, but new energy
vehicles (electric, hybrid electric, plug-in
hybrid electric and fuel cell electric vehicles)
as well.
The reason for this range expansion
is that, irrespective of the primary drive
system of the vehicle – combustion engine,
engine combined with a 48-volt or 350-
volt battery, or a 400-volt battery in a fully
electric vehicle – a ‘traditional’ 12-volt AGM/
EFB battery is also fitted. Once again, this is
a long term trend as VMs recognise the need
to ensure their vehicles have a suitable and
reliable reserve power supply, should the
battery used in the drivetrain be exhausted
So, the reality for the independent
aftermarket is that although the primary
function of these 12-volt batteries will
evolve, from starting the engine to servicing
increased electrical load and critical safety
functions, the demand for OE quality
replacement batteries will remain for the
foreseeable future.
Fit them right, first time!
This reality brings into focus the need for
independent workshops to understand the
technology that underpins these batteries
and, perhaps more importantly, the
requirements the VMs have built into to how
a replacement is fitted.
Although big strides have been made
in the intervening years, in 2019, after
researching the market, Ecobat Battery
discovered that nationally 43% of workshops
turned away start/stop battery replacement
work due to either being unsure of the
process or aware that potential problems
could result if they were not fitted correctly,
which meant they were losing out on the
revenue it offers, estimated at £185 per
installation at that time!
Ecobat Battery addressed the problem
head-on and introduced the ONE BOX, a
solution that consolidated all the equipment
needed to test and install start/stop
batteries into a single package and which
continues to provide workshops with an easy
route to access the profit potential these
installations yield.
With the ONE BOX package and a little
training to enable technicians get the very
best from the equipment, workshops find
that fitting these batteries correctly is not
a complicated process and allows them
to provide a more professional service,
which improves customer satisfaction and
reduces the risk of future warranty claims
due to the incorrect installation or use of an
inappropriate battery.
The components brought together in the
ONE BOX bundle, include an EBT780 battery
analyser to accurately assess the condition
of the existing battery (which incidentally,
should be standard practice and undertaken
on every vehicle that enters an independent
workshop, irrespective of the reason for
its visit), an EBC8UK battery charger and
OBD lead to support the vehicle’s ECU/
data storage during the replacement
process and an EBT420 battery validation
tool to ensure the new AGM/EFB battery
is correctly assimilated into the vehicle’s
battery management system. However,
the package can also be supported with
signage and point-of-sale material, to allow
workshops to fully promote their start/stop
replacement capability to motorists.
As with the other products in its portfolio,
which, in addition to Exide and VARTA,
include the Lucas and Numax brands, the
ONE BOX solution is available to workshops
through the company’s motor factor
customers. However, if a workshop’s regular
supplier does not work with Ecobat, they
can still gain access to the package by
contacting the company direct, which
will then arrange for one of its existing
customers to supply it, as well as coordinate
the necessary training.
By combining the right tools and helpful
guidance, Ecobat’s ONE BOX opens the way
for workshops that might still be turning
start/stop battery replacement work away
and allows them to access the business and
increase their profits, with a straightforward,
practical and inexpensive solution.
Maverick Diagnostics to increase workshop
visits following business development
manager appointments
Maverick Diagnostics is delighted to announce the appointment of two
business development managers, citing the need to offer workshops
even more support as vehicle technology continues to become more
sophisticated and the need to give them a competitive advantage.
The experienced pair of Matt Oddie and
Glenn Hopkins, from Opus IVS and GSF
Car Parts respectively, represent the
OEM diagnostic tool and training specialist
throughout the UK – dividing their time
between the north and south.
While it is early days for the pair, the duo
have reported encouraging conversations
Matt Oddie
between themselves and both prospects
and existing customers. Glenn has
observed that Maverick Diagnostics is
held in “high regard”, while Matt, who
said the opportunity to join the company
was “too much to resist”, believes the
all-encompassing offer of diagnostic
tools, training and services is exactly what
customers need to “stay ahead of the
curve”.
He continued: “Most customers are
welcoming and want to discuss their
struggles and what support they need,
especially those workshops that are
encountering brands that are bringing
their own technology to the fore. This is
generating more labour hours or, sadly, is
pushing customers back to the main dealer,
as they don’t have the right diagnostic tools
or technical support.
Glenn admitted that being “out in the
field” is where his best work is achieved;
Matt agreed and already feels at home
within the company. He also pointed to a
key area that he has emphasised during his
early tenure.
Glenn Hopkins
He said: “Effective diagnostics is an
important part of working on a vehicle; our
tools keep up with the guided diagnostics
needed, service functions, coding,
programming, security gateways, software
updates and component protection
– all needed to offer a complete and
professional service.”
Maverick Diagnostics Managing Director,
Andy Brooke, is thrilled with how the two
business development managers have
adjusted to the ‘Maverick way’.
To connect with either Matt or Glenn,
both are available on LinkedIn.
Richard Welland appointed
to lead WAI Europe
Global automotive electrical specialist, WAI, has appointed current UK managing director
Richard Welland as President of WAI Europe, overseeing all European operations.
The news comes as WAI’s UK and
European operations further align
under one umbrella, as WAI Europe.
With Richard’s successful track
record as head of the UK business, he brings a
wealth of automotive and business knowledge,
experience and a strategic mindset to the
brand.
Ryan Moul, Chief Executive Officer at WAI
Global, comments: “I’m thrilled to welcome
Richard as our new President of Europe.
With his proven track record as the managing
director of our UK business, we’re confident
that his exceptional leadership skills will guide
our European operations to even greater
heights.”
Welland added: “It’s a great honour to
become President of WAI Europe and continue
the fantastic work achieved by the team over
the past ten years. As we move forward and
unite under our ‘one team, one fight’ banner,
I’m pleased to be able to help drive the
business forward and lead the team to future
success!”
In addition to the leadership changes, Ramon
Hoekman has expanded his role and will take on
the position of Commercial VP for Europe and
will report into Richard.
