BULLOUS

DISEASE

WITH DR R. SINGH

This skin Feature was

rendered by Dr Raj Singh,

educating the community

on skin disease.

He is available for a

consultation at his,

Scottsville branch in

Pietermaritzburg or at his

Durban branch.

DIAGNOSIS INCLUDES:

* A complete history and physical

exam noting the appearance

and location of the lesions.

* Skin biopsy, a procedure in which

a small piece of skin is taken to be

examined under a microscope.

* Direct immunoflourescence, a

special skin biopsy, that examines

tissues by staining it, and patterns

of deposits of different immune

substances in the body can be

seen. These patterns correlate with

the different bullous diseases.

* Indirect immunofluorescence, a

special blood test, that measures

antibodies (substances in the

blood directed against other

substances).

TREATMENT

Oral corticosteroids (prednisone)

are anti-inflammatory medicines

which suppress the immune system.

Large doses over long periods of

time may be needed; however,

lowering the dosage, when

possible, will decrease side effects.

Immuno suppressant drugs like

myco-phenilate mofetil,

cyclophosphamide, or azathioprine

may be added to allow the dosage

of prednisone to be decreased and

enhance treatment.

Tetracycline may be beneficial in

bullous pemphigoid. Sulfa drugs

may be used to treat dermatitis

herpetiforrnis and linear lgA bullous

disease.

Bullous disease is controllable,

therefore, it is important to see a

dermatologist at the first sign of this

type of disease in order to make

a proper diagnosis and get early

treatment.

Curry

Ingredients

1 tsp Methi (fenugreek) seeds

1 tsp coriander seeds

1 cardamom pod, seeds only

1 tsp dried curry leaves

2 tbsp sunflower oil

1/4 tsp turmeric

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp chilli powder

1 tbsp finely chopped ginger

4 garlic cloves, crushed

1 green chillies, finely chopped

2 red onions, diced

1 whole cauliflower, including stem and

leaves, chopped into bite-sized pieces

2 large tomatoes, cut into wedges

1 250ml can coconut milk

1 lime, juiced

Method

Heat a pan and while on high heat, add the

Methi Seeds, coriander, cardamom seeds

and curry leaves, toast for 2 mins or until

tomatoes and stir-fry for another 3-5 mins or

until they start to break down.

Pour in the coconut milk and cook over a

medium heat, stirring, for 15-20 mins until

the cauliflower is tender and the sauce has

reduced. Squeeze over the lime juice and

check for seasoning.

Back-To-School

Preparation Tips

Your little one may have been used to

staying up later than their usual bedtime,

during vacation. At least a full week before

school starts, it's important to adjust their

body clock according to daily school

schedule. Lights off should be earlier than

usual to ensure one gets the right amount

of sleep for a full day of learning. We all

know how cranky one can get when we

are tired!

Sit your little one down and talk about

safety and how it should be their top

priority. Discuss what to do in situations

such as being lost or being bullied. Talk

about physical safety and traffic safety.

Remind them that they are surrounded by

responsible adults to who they can run to

should there be a problem.

While some children may be excited for

the first day in school, others won't be

because they might still be in vacation

mode. To get them amped for returning,

buy their clothing, snacks and supplies

with them, giving them freedom to choose.

Spend quality time together, as you won't

get to spend as much time with them

once school opens. Make it a point to

just bond with your little one/s, have

meaningful conversations and just be

there for them. This will reassure them that

they will come home to a loving place

after a long day at school.

For a smoother school year ahead, follow

these back-to-school preparation tips for

parents!

Committee portfolio debriefs in the

coming weeks. We will look at all

aspects of the race, from the

Start and Route to the Finish.”

Ngcobo adds, “Our race has always

been about putting Runners First

and once we have finalized our

The 96th Comrades Marathon has been

lauded as having the seventh highest

WEEKLY HOROSCOPE

29 JUNE - 5 JULY 2023

Spreading the Light of the Vedas

Dr Roshan Singh

For a full and detailed horoscope for 2022, email

punditroshan@telkomsa.net

Aries

While there can be some restlessness in spots today, dear

Aries, a Sun-Saturn trine brings a practical flavor to your

world. It can feel good to do your duties, and life seems more

straightforward and purposeful. You can benefit from some

structure, order, and self-discipline, particularly regarding your

relationships and emotions. Making lists and plans can be

comforting. When you know what to expect, you feel more

relaxed and can be more productive.

Taurus

While there can be some erratic or rebellious elements to

the day, dear Taurus, you come into your own as the day

advances. A Sun-Saturn trine points to feeling stronger on a

mental level, as it builds your confidence that you can get

over hurdles and obstacles. Your patience can carry you far.

Realistic thinking benefits you and feels satisfying.

Gemini

There can be some missteps in communications today, dear

Gemini, but the day shapes up to be very productive. You

benefit from taking steps towards feeling a little more secure,

with the Sun in your resources sector in harmony with Saturn.

This transit helps ground you and encourages you to be better

organized or prepared.

Cancer

Today can begin with rather choppy energy, dear Cancer, but

it shapes up to be steady and satisfying. With the Sun in your

sign forming a trine to Saturn, your willingness to take care of

details or tidy up certain areas of your life can figure strongly,

and it's highly productive.

Leo

While the day can begin feeling a little erratic, dear Leo, you

quickly find your footing. You feel more grounded as you pay

more attention to rules, structures, and goals. With today's Sun-

Saturn trine, it's a good time to put more faith in someone and

believe in your capabilities.

Virgo

With a Sun-Saturn trine today, it's a good time to bring a little

more structure to your life, dear Virgo, mainly in your daily

affairs, with communications, and relationships. You might

discover good advice and information that will help you with

practical matters. People in your life or a relationship goal

encourage you to focus on what's most important.

Libra

While you can feel disorganized early today, dear Libra, a

Sun-Saturn influence comes into play as you advance, and it

becomes far more straightforward to simplify and focus. With

this transit, it's a good time to bring more structure to your life,

mainly through work and daily routines. Your attention span

is long, and you seem to have the energy to get things done.

Scorpio

The day can feel a little scattered at the outset, dear Scorpio,

but you quickly find your footing. A Sun-Saturn trine today can

help you feel and enjoy a sense of groundedness. You might

feel better about a relationship or relationship status, perhaps

more confident that you're heading in the right direction.

Sagittarius

The day's energies may begin feeling scattered, dear

Sagittarius. However, a Sun-Saturn transit comes into play, and

it's excellent for organizing and bringing a little more order or

structure to your life in small but significant ways. This process

can work on both emotional and mundane or physical levels.

Capricorn

While you can begin the day uncertain where to put your

energies, dear Capricorn, you quickly find ways to simplify.

Practical news, tidbits, and advice can circulate, and you feel

on top of things. Your feet are on the ground, and this is an

empowering feeling. Accepting limitations liberates you from

the stress of overshooting and reduces pressure

Aquarius

You can feel a little scattered or disconnected early today,

dear Aquarius, but the day advances with more clarity. A Sun-

Saturn transit brings very practical and beneficial energy for

straightening things out, in fact. Aim to tap into the rewards

of this influence by channeling your energy into organizing

something in your life that can use some tidying.

Pisces

You can have trouble taking a straightforward path to your

goals early today, dear Pisces. However, as the day advances,

a Sun-Saturn trine helps you accept your responsibilities,

and you're likely to enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that

comes as you fulfill them. It can bring refreshing clarity to your

life, reducing pressure all around.
