A map-based search provides a simple method<br />
to loc<strong>at</strong>e seismic lines and images. Displays of<br />
track lines may be filtered to show a particular<br />
d<strong>at</strong>a type or processing history (e.g., show<br />
stacks, OBS d<strong>at</strong>a, or shot d<strong>at</strong>a). A metad<strong>at</strong>a<br />
search produces tables with pre-selected<br />
parameters. A plotting tool cre<strong>at</strong>es customized<br />
images with simple post-stack parameter<br />
selection <strong>for</strong> filtering and amplitude modific<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS INSTITUTE FOR GEOPHYSICS
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Seismic</strong> <strong>Portal</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>UTIG</strong> is the<br />
g<strong>at</strong>eway to the underlying Marine <strong>Seismic</strong> D<strong>at</strong>a<br />
Center. <strong>The</strong> center provides <strong>for</strong> the preserv<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
of academic seismic active-source d<strong>at</strong>a,<br />
while the portal provides access <strong>for</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
and research to the varied digital d<strong>at</strong>a d<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
back to 1974. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Seismic</strong> <strong>Portal</strong> <strong>at</strong><br />
LDEO acts similarly, and the two portals provide<br />
in<strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion on the majority of U.S. academic<br />
seismic d<strong>at</strong>a sets.<br />

<strong>The</strong> two portals are part of the Marine Geoscience<br />
D<strong>at</strong>a System, a collection of d<strong>at</strong>a<br />
centers and portals having a broad responsibility<br />
to collect and cre<strong>at</strong>e metad<strong>at</strong>a <strong>for</strong> U.S.<br />
marine programs, provide tools <strong>for</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a discovery<br />
and generally ensure the long-term integrity<br />
of d<strong>at</strong>a collected in support of NSF<br />
programs.<br />
D<strong>at</strong>a Inventory<br />
Presently, the ASP <strong>at</strong> <strong>UTIG</strong> contains digital d<strong>at</strong>a<br />
from over 230 cruises. This is growing as we incorpor<strong>at</strong>e<br />
new and legacy d<strong>at</strong>a from individual scientists<br />
and from the old LDEO archive. <strong>The</strong> system<br />
totals 5.4 terabytes in over 30,000 files of which<br />
10,000 are stacks, migr<strong>at</strong>ions, single-channel and<br />
ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) lines. <strong>The</strong><br />
remainder are field d<strong>at</strong>a from 144 cruises, many<br />
from <strong>UTIG</strong> ship oper<strong>at</strong>ions prior to 1988.<br />
Products<br />
<strong>Seismic</strong> profiles are presented as cross-section<br />
images along with the primary binary d<strong>at</strong>a, geographic<br />
loc<strong>at</strong>ion, acquisition in<strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion, processing<br />
histories and cit<strong>at</strong>ions. <strong>The</strong> metad<strong>at</strong>a compil<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
provide the building blocks <strong>for</strong> searching the<br />
d<strong>at</strong>a center inventory.<br />

User Demographics<br />
Of the registered users, about 71% are from our<br />
target audience of academics, researchers, and<br />
students, while about 18% support commercial<br />
activities. Besides the U.S., other well-represented<br />
countries are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China,<br />
France, Germany, India, and the United Kingdom.<br />
