When Covid-19 struck in 

March 2020, the industry 

as a whole was concerned 

as to what the future 

may hold. However, it soon became 

apparent that the global tragedy had 

inadvertently given a shot in the arm 

to the firearms trade. As we are now 

aware, time spent inside gave way 

to new hobbies, and also a greater 

appreciation of the countryside, as 

bars and restaurants were closed down, 

forcing new potential customers into 

the great outdoors and inspiring them 

to take up all manner of outdoor 

activities. 

Consumers began buying guns for 

self-protection in an increasingly 

volatile time, for hunting and for 

sports shooting. Sales of handguns in 

the US went off the scale and globally, 

air guns experienced a huge increase 

in purchases. 

We are now halfway through 2023 

and, talking to retailers, it is clear 

that the initial boom has ended but, 

positively, a large proportion of those 

new gun users have stuck with it and, 

although numbers are not what they 

were, they are certainly up on 2019. 

This is what I had predicted and 

hoped for at the end of 2020, so I am 

delighted with this result. 

It’s not just guns that have seen 

an increase in sales, all associated 

products surrounding firearms 

have also witnessed an upsurge in 

transactions, none more so than gun 

cleaning equipment. 

Retailers tell me that sales of gun 

cleaning products are continuing 

to grow as more and more new gun 

owners understand the need to look 

after their new purchase. Staying with 

gun cleaning, we have teamed up with

Clean Technologies to look at how 

new science is driving the firearm 

cleaning world, you’ll be able to read 

a deep dive into this sector in an

MEETING IN SOFIA 

Supporting the Nature Restoration Law for the benefit of small game in Europe 

The 125th Anniversary of the 

Union of Hunters and Anglers 

in Bulgaria (UHAB) was 

celebrated recently in Sofia 

(Bulgaria), where the heads of Europe’s 

national hunting associations gathered 

for their annual Members’ Meeting. 

The agenda included a wide range of 

pressing issues for Europe’s hunters at the 

European level, including key files related 

to advancing FACE’s conservation goals. 

Among these issues was the new 

Nature Restoration Law, which FACE 

has been supporting since its publication 

last June. A FACE policy briefing 

released this week (link) emphasises that 

the new law has the potential to benefit 

small game and biodiversity through 

habitat and ecosystem restoration, 

something FACE has been advocating for 

decades. FACE called on decision-makers 

to support this important opportunity. 

Referring to the challenges for 

Europe’s wild game populations, FACE 

President Torbjörn Larsson stated: We 

need landscape-level approaches backed 

by the involvement of key stakeholders to 

develop workable conservation measures 

for small game. This requires the right 

incentives to promote community-based 

conservation at all levels. The new Nature 

Restoration Law is critically important 

and will help to deliver FACE’s Strategy 

for 2027. 

The European Hunters’ Campaign 

(#signforhunting) was another important 

topic discussed during the meeting. 

FACE and its Members have successfully 

collected over 260,000 signatures to 

ensure a strong future for hunting and 

biodiversity in Europe. The campaign 

will land in Brussels on 6 June 2023, 

coinciding with Green Week and an 

important time for the political debate on 

nature restoration.

On Day 2 of the 

meeting, FACE organised 

a conference to discuss 

“Bringing back small 

wild game to Europe’s 

farmland” (link). With 

national CAP strategic 

plans in place and a 

new restoration law 

under discussion, this 

conference presented a 

vital opportunity to discuss 

and exchange information 

on restoring small game in 

Europe.

NATIONAL DEER ASSOCIATION AWARDED $200,000 GRANT 

The National Deer 

Association’s Public Lands 

Conservation Initiative 

has received a significant 

boost in the form of a 

$200,000 grant from the 

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s 

Outdoor Fund. The Fund 

has now contributed a total 

of $350,000 to the effort, 

which NDA launched in 

2021 and which is ahead 

of pace to reach the goal of 

improving one million acres 

of public hunting land by 

2026. 

“We are incredibly appreciative of 

the generous support of Johnny Morris 

and the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s 

Outdoor Fund, which will help us 

accomplish important work on the 

ground for deer and hunters,” said Nick 

Pinizzotto, President and CEO of 

NDA. “The Fund and the organisations 

it has helped over the years have had 

immeasurable positive impacts on fish 

and wildlife conservation, and we’re 

proud to be part of it.” 

NDA’s initiative – entitled Improving 

Access, Habitat and Deer Hunting on 

Public Lands – addresses landscapelevel 

access and forest health issues 

nationally. By the end of 2022, NDA 

and our conservation partners, including 

the Outdoor Fund, had invested 

$2,164,206 into the initiative. In 

addition, NDA matched $335,000 in 

funding against the original $150,000 

Outdoor Fund grant, as well as secured 

an additional $1.5 million in federal 

funding through stewardship agreements 

and appropriated funds, creating a 

total funding leverage of 12-to-1 for 

conservation. 

By the end of 2022, NDA had 

initiated access and forest health projects 

in six states, on six National Forests 

in three US Forest Service (USFS) 

Regions, ultimately improving 316,218 

acres of public land.

Employee Satisfaction Survey results 

HeadHunters NW, the premier executive

Shooting Industry Employee Satisfaction 

Survey. The survey provides data for

“The purpose of the HeadHunters NW 

Shooting Industry Employee Satisfaction 

Survey is to help employers and managers 

in our industry better understand the 

needs and expectations of their workforce,” 

according to HeadHunters NW President 

Shaylene Keiner. “And boy, did we learn 

some compelling things along the way,” 

she said. 

“One surprise was the number of people 

preferring remote work versus an office 

setting,” Keiner stated. Only 14 percent 

of the respondents favoured in-person 

work, while the remainder split between 

fully remote and a hybrid combination of 

in-person and remote work. “This trend is 

indicative of many of the professionals we 

recruit for top positions in the industry. 

While remote work is not always practical 

for employers, the survey reflects this 

model appears to be the new normal,” she 

commented. 

“Based on results from questions 

about corporate culture and satisfaction, 

it is crucial for our industry leaders 

to recognise the pitfalls of working 

remotely, including the potential for fewer 

collaborative workplace relationships, 

decreased opportunities for mentorship, 

and possible sluggish career advancement. 

Perhaps our leaders must address this 

trend by defining what drives the desire 

for staffers who prefer to avoid the office,” 

Keiner suggested. 

“Another discovery from the survey 

is that professionals are ready to grow 

through skill building and training,” 

she said. “Fifty-one percent of survey 

participants expressed eagerness 

to improve skills via professional 

development education, while thirty-one 

percent hunger for first-hand training 

from leadership,” said Keiner. “Those 

numbers reflect a tangible opportunity to 

engage workers and guide company culture 

through education and mentoring.”

The mismanagement 

of range health and 

safety issues can be 

devastating to your 

employees and your range. 

Employees can suffer from 

hearing loss or lead exposure 

if they are not educated and 

monitored to ensure that 

they are wearing the proper 

protective equipment (PPE) 

to mitigate these risks. 

The above outcomes can 

lead to absence from work, 

bad publicity and significant 

financial penalties for the 

range ownership. If the 

Occupational Safety and 

Health Administration 

(OSHA) gets involved 

and finds that you’re not 

managing health and safety 

concerns properly, you 

could be facing all kinds of 

detrimental issues for your 

business. 

“Ranges are at risk of 

OSHA inspections due to 

OSHA’s National Emphasis 

Program on lead,” said NSSF 

Compliance Consultant 

Dale Krupinski. “OSHA 

is targeting lead in all 

industries, including the gun 

range industry. That makes 

it easier for OSHA to inspect 

an employer.” 

In most instances, 

Krupinski said, in order for 

OSHA to come out and 

inspect a facility, someone 

from or related to the facility 

must request it in writing. 

But for industries involving 

lead, OSHA can take a 

request over the phone, which 

means anyone can make a 

complaint and bring about an 

inspection. 

“It can be a health 

department referral, or a 

physician if little Johnny gets 

sick, or an angry customer,” 

Krupinski said. One nuance 

to this is that the local 

health department may be 

the agency that gets involved 

when the facility is a private 

shooting club, because OSHA 

may not regulate a private 

club; OSHA’s involvement 

is contingent upon the club 

having employees. That 

said, a volunteer who is 

compensated by free entry 

into a competition or freerange 

time is considered an 

employee because he or she is 

receiving value for helping at 

the club. So, while OSHA’s 

oversight is far-reaching, it 

may not be the only agency 

that ranges must deal in 

terms of employee health and 

safety. 

Krupinski said we’ve 

known about lead hazards 

since 1951, when an incident 

involving lead exposure 

in law enforcement took 

place in Detroit, Michigan. 

Fortunately, today there 

are getter guidelines and 

equipment available to help 

reduce exposure to lead on 

shooting ranges; the job now 

is to build awareness of these 

mitigation tools. 

“I’m trying to partner 

with whoever I can, to use 

their microphone to get this 

information out,” Krupinski 

said. “I appreciate that the 

NSSF is helping spread the 

word and to educate range 

owners. Many range owners 

just don’t know who to turn 

to for the technical assistance 

that they need.” Krupinski 

will be running a webinar on 

May 8 for NSSF titled “Seven 

Core Elements of Effective 

Range Health and Safety 

Programs.” 

Often, Krupinski said, a 

range operator will hand out 

PPEs such as a respirator and 

hearing protection, and think

that’s enough, but it’s not. 

“Range owners need to do 

full shift noise and airborne 

lead monitoring to determine 

how much of the OSHA 

standards applies to their 

range,” Krupinski said. “They 

won’t know that unless they 

have complete exposure 

monitoring,” Krupinski said. 

“They can’t make sound 

decisions without data.” 

Noise and lead are the 

primary hazards on ranges, 

Krupinski said, and those 

hazards are not limited to 

indoor ranges. 

“Outdoor ranges have 

similar hazards,” he said. 

“Sometimes the wind is not 

in their favor, so they have 

lead exposure issues as well. 

Outdoor ranges are not 

exempt from OSHA or from 

the employer’s responsibility 

to provide a safe workplace.” 

Some OSHA regulations 

apply to hazardous chemicals 

that may be used on gun 

ranges, such as gun cleaning 

chemicals, janitorial supplies, 

and chemicals involved in 

cleaning up lead. 

“Employers need to have 

safety data sheets for all their 

hazardous chemicals, and they 

have to provide the related 

employee training,” Krupinski 

said. “They need a written 

hazard communication 

program, but often they don’t 

have that. Then when they 

use PPEs such as respirators, 

they need a written program 

for that as well.” 

As if all of that isn’t 

enough, there are small 

programs such those dealing 

with blood-borne pathogens. 

Sometimes a slide bite or 

hammer bite will occur on the 

range and an employee must 

clean up a small amount of 

blood that may have dripped 

from a cut. 

“This may happen weekly 

to monthly, depending on the 

range,” Krupinski said. “If the 

range requires an employee 

to administer first aid, then 

they’re in the blood borne 

pathogen program. If they 

require the staff to clean up 

the blood, they’re required to 

have a program.” Then there 

are ordinary safety hazards 

that may be present: damaged 

cords, blocked electrical 

panels, or unguarded 

machines in the gun smithing 

area. 

“When I go into a range, 

that’s what I look for,” 

Krupinski said. “I sample for 

lead and noise, and I do a 

general safety walkthrough as 

well. If I can educate range 

owners on the importance 

of planning for workplace 

safety and health during the 

design phase, that’s great. 

Doing so will allow the range 

management team to apply 

the appropriate line items in 

their design and operational 

budgets.” 

Putting these programs 

in place after a range is in 

operation is more difficult but 

still necessary and doable.

LOW-LIGHT BINOCULARS 

It is no secret that game animals across the globe are most active during the magical hours 

of dawn, dusk, and throughout the night. To ensure you maximise your time in the field and 

seize every opportunity, you’ll need binoculars that excel in challenging low-light conditions. 

This month we dive deep into the intricacies of dedicated low-light binoculars, helping you 

choose the perfect companion for your nocturnal hunting adventures. 

UNDERSTANDING BINOCULAR SPECS 

To ensure everyone is on the same 

page, let’s take a moment to clarify the 

specifications used to designate binocular 

models. Just like ammunition, binoculars 

are assigned specific names that hold 

significant meaning. For instance, you may 

come across designations such as 8x32, 

10x42, 10x50, or 8x56. Let’s dissect these 

numbers to comprehend their significance 

and how they impact your viewing 

experience. 

The first part of the binocular 

designation, preceding the ‘x’, refers to 

the magnification power. This number 

indicates how much closer the observed 

subject appears when viewed through the 

binoculars compared to what is visible with 

the naked eye. For instance, binoculars 

with an 8x magnification power will make 

objects appear eight times closer than 

they do to the unaided eye. The higher the 

number, the greater the magnification and 

the closer the subject will appear. 

Now, let’s move on to the second part 

of the designation, which comes after the 

‘x’ and corresponds to the diameter of the 

objective lenses, also known as front lenses. 

This measurement is always expressed in 

millimeters. The objective lens diameter 

plays a crucial role in determining the 

amount of light the binoculars can gather. 

It generally ranges from 24 to 32, 42, 50, 

56, and occasionally even 60 or larger, 

depending on the specific application and 

intended use. 

In general, a larger objective lens 

diameter allows more light to enter the 

binoculars, resulting in brighter and clearer 

images, particularly in low-light conditions. 

However, it’s important to consider that 

larger objective lenses also contribute to 

increased weight and bulkiness of the 

binoculars. 

There is nothing to picking low-light 

binoculars. Just pick a pair with the largest 

objective lenses you can get your hands on. 

Right? Up to a point, yes. It is completely 


true when stating the larger a binoculars objective lens 

diameter, the more light-gathering ability they have. 

This said, there is a lot more to a good pair of lowlight 

binoculars than just the diameter of the objective 

lenses. Diameters of 50mm or 42mm can serve some 

equally well in low-light conditions as those big 56mm 

lenses. It all depends on the user though. 

EXIT PUPIL 

In addition to magnification and objective lens 

diameter, another crucial factor to consider when 

evaluating binoculars for low-light conditions is the 

exit pupil. The exit pupil refers to the size of the beam 

of light that exits the eyepiece and enters your eyes. It 

is determined by dividing the objective lens diameter 

by the magnification power. For example, in a 10x42 

binocular, the exit pupil would be 4.2mm (42 divided 

by 10). 

The exit pupil plays a vital role in determining 

the amount of light reaching your eyes. In low-light 

situations, such as dawn, dusk, or when hunting under 

a canopy of trees, your 

pupils dilate to allow more 

light in. If the exit pupil of 

your binoculars is smaller 

than the dilation of your 

pupils, you won’t be able 

to fully utilise the available 

light, resulting in a dimmer 

image. 

To optimise your low-light viewing experience, it is 

recommended to choose binoculars with an exit pupil 

that is equal to or slightly larger than the dilation 

of your own pupils. In general, the average human 

pupil dilation in low-light conditions ranges from 

5mm to 7mm. Therefore, binoculars with an exit pupil 

between 5mm and 7mm are ideal for maximizing light 

transmission and delivering brighter, more detailed 

images in low-light settings. 

It’s worth noting that as the objective lens diameter 

increases, the exit pupil size also increases, provided 

the magnification remains 

the same. This means that 

binoculars with larger 

objective lenses, such as 

8x56 or 10x50, have larger 

exit pupils and are better 

suited for low-light hunting 

scenarios. 

EYES AND AGE 

The pupils in our very eyes 

automatically enlarge or 

narrow with the light in 

the surroundings. In lowlight 

conditions the pupils 

enlarge to their fullest. 

This process of enlarging 

is called dilation. When in 

the bloom of youth up to an 

age of twenty-something, 

human pupils dilate to a 

diameter of up to 7mm. The 

dilation ability of our eyes however diminishes with 

age. From an age of 60 and over, our pupils can enlarge 

to a maximal diameter of only 4mm. This natural agerelated 

change can impact the amount of light that 

reaches our eyes, potentially affecting the effectiveness 

of low-light binoculars. Considering these age-related 

variations in pupil dilation, it becomes crucial to select 

binoculars with an exit pupil that matches or exceeds 

the dilation capacity of your own pupils, especially for 

individuals in older age groups. 

LIGHT TRANSMISSION 

Another crucial element to consider when picking the 

right binoculars, is light transmission. This directly 

impacts the brightness and clarity of the images you 

see through the binoculars, particularly in dimly lit 

conditions. 

When light enters the objective lenses of binoculars, 

it goes through a series of optical elements, including 

prisms and lenses, before reaching your eyes. 

Throughout this process, a certain amount of light can 

be lost or absorbed, affecting the overall brightness of 

the image. 

When comparing low-light binoculars, 

it’s advisable to consider those with 

higher light transmission percentages. 

Manufacturers often specify the light transmission 

percentage or value of their binoculars, which 

indicates the amount of light that passes through the 

optical system. For example, if a binocular has a light 

transmission of 90 per cent, it means that 90 per cent 

of the available light reaches your eyes. 

Higher light transmission values are desirable 

for low-light conditions, as they allow more light 

to reach your eyes, resulting in brighter and clearer 

images. Premium low-light binoculars are typically 

designed with high-quality optics, specialised lens 

coatings, and advanced prism systems that maximise 

light transmission. These features help minimise light 

loss, reduce glare, and enhance contrast, allowing 

you to make out details even in challenging lighting 

situations. 

When comparing different models of low-light 

binoculars, it’s advisable to consider those with higher 

light transmission percentages, typically ranging 

from 80 to 95 per cent or even higher. However, 

it’s important to note that other factors such as 

lens quality, prism design, and coating technology 

can also influence the overall image quality, so it’s 

recommended to evaluate binoculars as a whole, rather 

than solely relying on light transmission values. 

TO CONCLUDE 

By understanding these binocular specifications, you 

can make informed decisions when choosing the ideal 

pair for your low-light hunting needs. When selecting 

low-light binoculars, remember to consider the exit 

pupil size alongside magnification, objective lens 

diameter as well as light transmission to ensure you 

have the optimal equipment for enhanced visibility

Over the last century, optical technology 

has made tremendous progress. The 

advancements in materials, lens coatings, 

prism systems, and manufacturing 

techniques have revolutionised the 

quality and performance of binoculars 


across the board. Today’s binoculars 

are the result of extensive research, 

innovation, and technological 

breakthroughs. The optical 

clarity, resolution, brightness, and 

colour rendition achievable with 

modern binoculars far surpass 

what was imaginable a hundred 

years ago. Furthermore, features 

such as waterproofing, fogproofing, 

lightweight designs, and 

ergonomic enhancements have 

made contemporary binoculars more 

durable, versatile, and comfortable to 

use. 

CoNtiNUoUs iMpRoVEMENts 

While the foundation of binocular 

technology was laid down in the past, 

the ongoing pursuit of excellence

As our survey shows, hunting is by 

far the most important reason why 

binoculars are purchased at firearms 

retailers. Bird watching comes in 

second place. Although general 

outdoor pursuits and travel are 

important market segments for optics 

companies, it makes up for a relatively 

small segment in the gun related 

retail market.

BEst-sElliNg MoDEls 

Full-size models with an objective 

diameter of 40-42mm trump any other 

type. Even more so since they account 

for nearly half of all binocular sales 

according to our retailers. Not as bulky as 

the biggest models with 50mm or 56mm 

lenses, they are still easy to carry around 

all day. They are the true versatility 

kings. Compact models with 20-30mm 

objective lenses are also on the up with 

some retailers even claiming over-size 

binoculars are their best-selling category. 

optiCAl QUAlitY FiRst 

Good optics can mean a real difference 

in the field. Great optics will change the 

way you see the world forever. You really 

get what you pay for with binoculars, and 

optics in general. Which might explain 

why optical quality beats price as a 

major reason for buying a certain pair of 

binoculars hands down. Size is another 

determining reason, even more so than 

weight, make/name and build quality. 

MiD-pRiCE sEgMENt tAKEs thE 

lEAD 

With sales of high-end binoculars 

stabilised and even down, according 

to our survey, it’s the entry level and 

especially the mid-end that really shines 

nowadays. Sales of mid-price models 

have charged forward. The popularity of 

mid-price models explains why premium 

brands have created mid-level and even 

entry-level products to break open new 

markets next to their traditional high-end 

territory. Although many hunters still 

want the very best, a big chunk of the 

market is clearly looking for great quality 

at a reasonable price. 

RANgEFiNDERs 

It goes without saying that knowing 

the distance to your target is a vital 

part of shooting accurately. This is 

when binoculars equipped with a laser 

rangefinder shine. With the simple 

click of a button, you know the distance 

between yourself and your quarry. As 

more and more hunters are traveling 

the world in search of game and 

adventure, rangefinders prove to be a wise 

investment. Nearly half of retailers stated 

sales of this type of binoculars was up 

while another third said sales were stable. 

As a retailer you just cannot afford not to 

have rangefinder binoculars in stock. 

spottiNg sCopEs 

Although binoculars are great tools to scan 

areas in search for game, even the best 

ones quickly fall short when you really 

want to have an up-close look and evaluate 

your game while bridging vast distances. 

Regular use of a spotting scope will allow 

you to observe your quarry like you would 

never do otherwise. If you do any bird 

watching, target shooting or hunting at 

long range, you will enjoy using a spotting 

scope tremendously. True, they are bulky 

pieces of kit and can never replace a good 

pair of binoculars, yet their magnification 

and the ability to focus up-close on your 

target from afar is priceless. As it appears 

spotting scopes appeal to the respondents 

in our survey. About 15 per cent states 

spotting scope sales were up while just 30 

per cent noticed a decrease in sales over 

the last twelve months. 

sERViCE-READY 

Key to offering great service when selling 

optics is not only to have a sufficient 

stock of products but also a pile of 

spare parts and accessories at the ready. 

Eyepiece and objective covers get lost 

out in the field; neck straps become worn 

etcetera. Make sure you have an ample 

supply of all the brands and models you 

offer to immediately help customers. 

What’s more, help your customers keep 

their optics in perfect shape by offering 

lens cleaning kits, cloths… 

AsKiNg thE Right QUEstioNs 

As with anything, you get what you pay 

for but often there is a trade-off between 

the amount a customer can afford and 

the quality of the optics available in 

each price-segment. Budget is clearly an 

important issue as well. When selling 

binoculars, start by asking the right 

questions to your customers. For example, 

what type of hunting they intend to do, 

still hunting, stalking, safari… and when, 

in the light of day, in the twilight or at 

night. This combination of requirements 

and budget will help define choice, 

enabling you to offer valuable advice that 

will set you apart from your competitors 

and result in happy and trusting

American Midwest could be the ideal region to introduce

he Midwestern United States, also referred to as 

the Midwest or the American Midwest, is one of 

four census regions of the United States Census 

Bureau (also known as “Region 2”). It occupies

Hunting 

Certain data analysts found that hunter numbers 

were on the decline across the Midwest in 

2019… then Covid happened. In 2020, Michigan 

recorded 100,000 more hunters than the year 

before. Michigan numbers rose 5.5 per cent 

in 2020 when compared to 2019. A similar 

story was unravelling over in Wisconsin, where 

numbers rose two per cent. A lack of time and 

access are two popular reasons as to why hunter 

numbers were falling pre-pandemic, but the 

lockdown gave men and women the chance to 

discover or rediscover hunting and the majority 

have stuck with it as we move through 2023.

$800 million to conservation

White-tailed Deer 

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus 

virginianus), also known as the 

whitetail or Virginia deer, is a 

medium-sized deer native to North 

America, Central America, and South 

America as far south as Peru and 

Bolivia, where it predominately 

inhabits high mountain terrains 

of the Andes. It has also been 

introduced to New Zealand, all the 

Greater Antilles in the Caribbean 

(Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and 

Puerto Rico), and some countries in 

Europe, such as the Czech Republic, 

Finland, France, Germany, Romania 

and Serbia. In the Americas, it is 

the most widely distributed wild 

ungulate. 

Hunting deer in the Midwest is 

perhaps the most popular form of 

hunting in the region and is one of 

the best areas in the US to go and 

find yourself a trophy book. The area 

is full of expert outfitters that know 

the region like the back of their hand. 

Midwest, the hunter education grant 

program has resulted in more than 

175,000 students annually completing 

hunter safety and ethics courses. This 

program also provides additional hunter 

education opportunities, including 

mentored hunts, field to table classes and 

classes designed for urbanites, women, 

and millennials. These popular classes 

reflect interest in building stronger 

connections with nature and access to 

local, sustainable food. 

Banding together for ducks 

Thanks to duck banding and a network 

of biologists, hunters and birders across 

North America, we know a lot about 

species lifespans, populations and 

migration patterns. Banding data is used 

as a part of adaptive harvest management, 

the annual process of setting waterfowl 

hunting regulations in the United States. 

Duck band reporting is used to estimate 

population size and calculate harvest 

rates, which helps ensure the harvest of 

migratory game birds is sustainable and 

the hunting tradition can continue for 

future generations. 

Bringing together art, culture, 

and conservation 

Hunters, birders, and stamp collectors 

help protect wetlands across the country 

by purchasing Federal Duck Stamps. 

Since 1934, almost $1 billion has been 

raised to protect more than 6 million 

acres for waterfowl habitat nationally. In 

the Midwest, stamp sales have brought in 

almost $250 million to protect more than 

half a million acres of important habitat.

production areas across the Midwest are

Hunting in the Midwest 

The Midwest has a lot going for it for 

producing quality deer. Midwest whitetailed 

deer are often heavy-bodied and 

heavy-antlered due to a lot of available 

food and cover, and populations are 

generally pretty good. Disease outbreaks 

(CWD and EHD) are becoming more 

prevalent, but herds seem to still be 

holding on in these states.

land deer hunting states for you and your 

customers to consider. 


Turkey 

The wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is an upland 

game bird native to North America, one of two extant 

species of turkey and the heaviest member of the 

order Galliformes. It is the ancestor to the domestic 

turkey, which was originally derived from a southern 

Mexican subspecies of wild turkey (not the related 

ocellated turkey). 

In Ohio, the Buckeye State, has some excellent public 

hunting, with more than 651,000 acres available. 

Huge tracts of ground, like the Wayne National 

Forest (200,000-plus acres) in southern Ohio, allow 

hunters to truly get off the beaten path and get away 

from the crowds. 

Other areas of public land, such as the Grand River 

Wildlife Area (7,400 acres) in Ashtabula County, are 

also worth a try.

Pheasants 

The common pheasant (Phasianus 

colchicus) is a bird in the pheasant 

family (Phasianidae). The genus 

name comes from Latin phasianus, 

“pheasant”. The species name 

colchicus is Latin for “of Colchis” 

(modern day Georgia), a country 

on the Black Sea where pheasants 

became known to Europeans. 

Although Phasianus was previously 

thought to be closely related to 

the genus Gallus, the genus of 

junglefowl and domesticated 

chickens, recent studies show that 

they are in different subfamilies, 

having diverged over 20 million 

years ago. 

The ring-necked pheasant is the 

state bird of South Dakota, one of 

only two US state birds that is not a 

species native to the United States. 

Iowa 

The corn state is one of the most soughtafter 

states for hunting mature bucks, 

because the trophy potential is huge. The 

state boasts tons of record-book whitetails, 

and the deer herd is pretty good, apart 

from some localised breakouts of EHD 

lately. As far as public land deer hunting 

goes, there are lots of WMAs and state 

forests that you can hunt. The downside 

to this state is that the chance of drawing 

a hunting tag can be tough and the 

associated price tag can be several hundred 

dollars. 

Missouri 

Right below Iowa is another great public 

land deer hunting hotspot. Generally, the 

northern fringe of the state offers better 

deer hunting, and the state has several 

Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young 

records to its name. Public lands are 

more numerous here, with ample federal 

properties (USFS and USACE) and statemanaged 

lands too. 

Kansas 

While the secret’s out about the deer 

hunting in Kansas, you still have a good 

chance of harvesting a mature buck there. 

This state is known for growing some big 

prairie deer and the Boone and Crocket ad 

Pope and Young records back that up. There 

is a fair amount of federal and state hunting 

land, but they also have a Walk in Hunting 

Access program, where private landowners 

open their land to public hunting. The 

downside is that many non-resident 

hunters apply and the whole license and tag 

can set you back over $500. 

Wisconsin 

You can’t talk about the Midwest and not 

recognise Wisconsin as a great public land 

deer hunting opportunity. The record books 

are full of entries from Wisconsin, and so 

the potential is definitely there. But the real 

advantages to deer hunting in Wisconsin 

is that non-resident tags are super cheap 

(under $200) and the public lands abound. 

Name a type of public land, and Wisconsin 

probably has a ton of it: national forests, 

state forests, county forests, wildlife areas, 

industrially managed forest lands, etc. 

Ohio 

The buckeye state is quickly being 

recognised as a phenomenal deer hunting 

state. The terrain, habitat, and food sources 

all combine to create some incredibly big 

deer. The best part is that the public land 

deer hunting opportunities abound, with 

numerous national forests, state forests, 

state parks, and wildlife areas. The price of 

the over-the-counter license isn’t too bad to 

stomach either.

Basic Monoceros unit features 126 

mm long barrel, open/charge handle, 

extractor, safety switch and a side fire 

button – specifically designed to be 

operated by the same index finger, 

used to pull the Wolverine pistol 

trigger. This basic Monoceros unit can 

be converted into a single-shot breakaction 

handgun – resembling 17-18 

century flintlock guns – with a pistol 

handle, s-shaped open/charge handle 

and an auxiliary pistol trigger with the 

trigger guard. Picatinny rail adapter 

with an auxiliary pull-trigger and a 

trigger guard transforms the basic 

Monoceros unit into a 12 Ga “baby 

grenade launcher” for any existing 

rifle, equipped with Picatinny-style 

accessory rail on the bottom of its 

forend (forend must be all-metal 

to survive the 12 Ga recoil). The 

described configurations are shown on 

the right. The company also considers 

adding a very compact folding stock 

survival gun configuration to this 

product line and a short version for 

1911/2011 handguns. Monoceros

targeting of more distant targets. The 

1-6x24 model has a reticle with an 

illuminated dot in the second focal plane 

(SFP) and is equipped with a rectification 

which is hidden under the caps with a 

click value of 0.5 MOA. The rectification 

knobs can be set to the zero position 

(zero-reset) after zeroing the rifle.

2.5-15x50 is equipped with rectification 

knobs (under the caps) for elevation 

correction and windage correction 

with a click value of 0.25 MOA. The 

rectification knobs can be set to the zero

rifle. The Manul M6 2.5-15x50 riflescope 

has a reticle with an illuminated dot in 

the second focal plane (SFP). The ability 

to adjust the parallax correction allows 

the shooter to perform precise focusing 

when shooting at longer distances.

The Manul M6 4.5-27x56 riflescope offers 

all the functions and features for medium 

and long-range hunting and shooting. The 

Manul M6 6 4.5-27x56 model is equipped 

with exposed rectification turrets with a 

zero-position setting (zero-reset) after the 

zeroing is completed, as well as a zerostop 

function, which facilitates elevation 

correction in the field conditions with a 

clear definition of the zeroing value. The 

MIL reticle with an illuminated central 

cross is characteris ed by the possibility 

of adjustment in click value of 0.1 mrad. 

The 4.5-27x56 model is available with a 

parallax correction adjustment function for 

precise focusing when shooting at longer 

distances.

VORTEX OPTICS 

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: 

To properly mount your riflescope Vortex highly recommends using an inch-pound torque 

wrench. DO NOT exceed 18 in-lbs of torque on the ring’s screws. 

1. Remove the upper ring halves (keeping them paired as packaged) and place aside. 

2. Loosen the base screws and fit the lower halves onto a Weaver® or Picatinny base. 

3. Position to allow proper riflescope placement for eye relief and even spacing on the 

riflescope tube. 

4. Individually tighten both base clamp screws while pressing the ring half down and forward, 

toward the muzzle, ensuring it is seated against a cross-slot in the rail. Tighten base clamp 

screws to 30 in-lbs. 

5. Place the riflescope onto the lower ring halves and loosely reattach the upper ring halves 

to the lower ring halves. 

6. Slide and rotate the riflescope for proper head position, eye relief, and vertical reticle 

alignment. 

7. With the riflescope properly positioned, alternately tighten the ring screws in a crisscross 

pattern. Tighten screws to 15-18 in-lbs while maintaining even spacing between the ring 

halves.
