Curry’s rise from an undersized college
player at a small-town college to a
in the world. The film was directed and
Oppenheimer
Attention all Christopher Nolan fans. His next film, Oppenheimer, is almost
here. The upcoming historical drama tracks the creation and use of the atomic
bomb - which was made by the scientist Robert Oppenheimer. Opening with
a fiery blaze, the official trailer for Oppenheimer is full of Nolan-esque tension
and spectacle. Clearly, we’re in for a reckoning that will takes us back to one the
most formative moments in history - when humanity was tested by greed, war,
and catastrophic weaponry. In cinemas from July 21.
Summer is coming to a close on Long
Island, and Alex is no longer welcome.
One misstep at a dinner party and
the older man she’s been staying with
dismisses her with a ride to the train
station and a ticket back to the city.
But with few resources, and a gift for
navigating the desires of others, Alex
stays on the island, drifting through
the gated driveways and sun-blasted
dunes of a rarefied world, trailing
destruction in her wake. Taunt and
sensual, Emma Cline’s The Guest
captures the latent heat and potential
danger of a summer that could
go either way for a young woman
teetering on the edge. Penguin
Cassandra is a creature of habit.
She likes what she likes. Museums,
jumpsuits, her boyfriend. And
strongly dislikes what she doesn’t.
Mess, change, her boss drinking
out of her mug. Her life runs in a
pleasing, predictable order. Until
now. She’s just been dumped. She’s
just been fired. And her local café
has run out of banana muffins. But
then she discovers she can go back
and change the past. So she should
be able to find a way to fix the life
she accidentally obliterated. The
Cassandra Complex by Holly Smale.
One woman. One bad day. Endless
chances to put things right. Penguin
Sex. Suspense. A remote, isolated
villa. A snow storm. Alex gets more
than she signed up for when she’s
selected to be one of five invited to
a month-long writing retreat at the
estate of a controversial high priestess
of feminist horror. She, along with her
former best friend and current rival,
are offered the chance to win a lifechanging,
seven-figure publishing
deal ... if they manage to complete an
entire novel from scratch. You get a
faint idea of the outcome as the first
of the five women disappear ... but
that doesn’t stop The Writing Retreat
being a great debut novel by Julia
Bartz. Magpie Books
Imagine. The perfect couple. They go together like bread and butter. Gin and
tonic. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Except, now they don’t. They broke up
six months ago. And they still haven’t told anyone. Which is how they end up
sharing a bedroom at the cottage that has been their yearly getaway with their
best friends for the past decade. A place where everyone leaves behind their
lives, drink far too much wine and soak up the sea air with their favourite people.
Only this year, they’re lying through their teeth. They’re going to have to fake
it. And hey ... it’s a flawless plan - if you look at it through a pair of sunscreensmeared
sunglasses. Fabulous characters, off-the-charts chemistry, Emily Henry’s
Happy Place is a wonderful feel-good read. Penguin Books
And there’s more ...
Sara Linton. Will Trent. Do you honestly need to know anything more? The two,
along with Will’s partner Faith Mitchell, are investigating new and cold cases that
fall horribly close to home. Have never missed a Karin Slaughter book. Never will.
After That Night is out now. GO GET IT! (Trigger warning: rape). Harper Collins
In Lucy Clarke’s The Hike, four friends hike out into the beautiful Norwegian
wild ... all big skies and mountain peaks and impressive forests. But a woman was
murdered there ... and waiting on the trail is someone who’s determined to keep
the secret buried. Atmospheric and edgy. Harper Collins
hot
passion
At first glance, Natasha Edwards might seem like your
typical mom next door. But this mommy wears many
other hats. Wife. Businesswoman. And firefighter! The
best part? She rocks each one of them.
Natasha Edwards realised early on
what makes her tick. Working on
different projects, expanding not one,
but multiple skill sets, and embracing
opportunities that challenge her to
come up with innovative solutions.
And so the dynamic world of
marketing seemed the perfect fit.
“I’ve always been fascinated with
marketing. And after some decades
in the field, it still intrigues me. It’s an
ever-evolving field that still allows
me to explore the depths of human
connection and constantly pushes me
to uncover creative ways to engage
with audiences.
“Since I’m in waste management, the
fundamental purpose resonates deeply
with me - striving to find solutions to
waste challenges and repurpose it,
effectively turning it into a valuable
resource. I believe this is the core reason
I’m so in love with what I do.”
Growing up, Natasha was set to
pursue either medicine or the creative
industry. Although she is happy with
her choice, the starry-eyed girl inside
her was still desperate for some
hands-on experience in the medical
field. Serious about making a positive
impact on the world.
So, when the opportunity arose
to delve deeper into the world of
medicine through first aid training for
work, she grabbed it with both hands.
“Throughout my life I faced an internal
struggle between embarking on a
full-time seven-year journey in the
medical field, or exploring my creative
side through marketing. So, when I
received the first aid training, it ignited
that very passion within me and I
decided to nurture it alongside my
other aspirations.”
With her healthy dose of passion to
help people, Natasha found herself
gravitating more and more toward the
service industry. So much so that she
advanced to Level 3 First Aid, which
enables her to provide more advanced
assistance in emergency situations.
When the devastating wildfires
ripped through Knysna in 2017,
Natasha simply couldn’t ignore the
plea for help. Within 24 hours she
and firefighter hubby Kyle found
themselves on a flight to George in
hopes of providing assistance in any
way possible.
“Working alongside so many selfless
firefighters, witnessing their bravery
and dedication deeply moved me.
They risked their lives to save complete
strangers and it was just such an aweinspiring
sight.”
Although admitting she never for a
moment thought about becoming a
firefighter, it’s as if something sparked
- quite literally - during her time in
Knysna. Natasha fell hook, line and
sinker in love with the beautiful act
of service.
“Being surrounded by these incredible
individuals and the profound
camaraderie we shared played a
significant role in my decision to
become a firefighter. Their bravery,
courage and unwavering dedication
left an indelible mark on me. It was
just a truly unforgettable experience
that solidified my desire to make
a difference.”
That, and of course, her hubby
whose first-hand accounts gave her
a glimpse of the profound fulfilment
and purpose that comes with being
a firefighter.
So, when she decided she wanted a
career in volunteer firefighting she
simply set fire to any stigma that stood
in her way. And, to those who say
women can’t be firefighters? Natasha
simply laughs, saying: “Hold my
Halligan and watch this!”
Raised with the belief that women are
capable of doing anything men can
do – and perhaps even looking better
doing it – Natasha always makes time
for training sessions, improving herself
to overcome any physical challenges
that might stand in her way.
While acknowledging there may be
physical differences between her and
her male counterparts, she doesn’t
allow it to limit her potential. In fact, it
motivates her even more.
“My mom and late gran played pivotal
roles in shaping who I am today.
They’ve instilled in me the values of
determination, self-belief and standing
up for what I want in life. To this day
I am surrounded by a network of
influential women who continue to
inspire me each day. I draw upon their
insights, knowledge and experiences
to propel myself forward and reach
new heights.”
When Natasha isn’t working on new
marketing strategies, fabulously
beating the stereotypes or working
out, she will most probably be found
hitting the books. Continuously
soaking up knowledge, because a
hungry mind is almost never satisfied.
A firm believer in the power of
intellectual growth, for Natasha there’s
no such thing as enough knowledge –
especially in her fields of expertise.
But it’s not only studying that brings
her joy – she and husband have
loads of fun with their 10-year-old
son, Tyron, and two-year-old toddler
Jolee. Although Natasha has a crazy
schedule, she will always set aside
special bonding time with her family.
“My family will always be my top
priority. Building and nurturing strong
relationships with my loved ones is
crucial to me. I love dedicating quality
time to my family, always ensuring
their needs are met and that we create
lasting memories together.”
Despite everything that keeps her
on her feet, she finds immense joy in
the simple pleasures of life. Cooking,
painting, singing, laughing, and
dancing with her kids are some of the
things that light up her world.
With a zest for life, an unyielding love
for her children and a creative spirit,
she hopes to challenge gender norms
and inspire young minds, empowering
youngsters to pursue their dreams and
aspirations, regardless of their gender.
One thing is certain. This vibrant
firefighter is passionate about many
things, but to be able to save a life
clearly tops her list.
Cooking up
success
From sculler to executive chef - Sam Ramokoka’s tale is almost as good
as his luscious oxtail. His goal - to make people happy with his exquisite food!
Compiled by: ALANICKA LOTRIET.
With a booming voice and a hearty laugh - both important
elements for a kitchen he says – Sam Ramokoka has
climbed the culinary ladder to become the head honcho in
the Cradle Boutique Hotel restaurant kitchen.
His first step into the culinary world started many moons
ago. Helping his mom, who used to cook for a Scripture
Union campsite, prepare simple meals like soup and mac
and cheese. Serving up to 80 kids per meal.
“I loved helping out in the kitchen. I used to observe
everyone as they were preparing the meals, stealing with
my eyes. So that when I was asked to do something, I’d
know exactly how to do it.
“Minestrone soup was the first meal I prepared on my own
and I’ll never forget waiting eagerly for the campers to
try it. When I saw how they were smiling as they enjoyed
my food, it awakened something inside me. It was such a
defining moment for me – realising I can make others smile
with my food!”
Although he went on to study mechanical engineering
after school, he quit because his heart just wasn’t in it. His
true passion being – you guessed it – food! His parents, who
funded his studies, were not pleased. Refusing to invest
in his delicious venture, Sam had to pave his own path to
make his dream career a reality.
And so, without any skills or experience, Sam kicked off his
culinary journey as a sculler at Mount Grace Hotel and Spa,
doing all the jobs the chefs didn’t like. You know, doing the
dishes, peeling potatoes and cutting onions.
“I knew what I wanted and I was willing to start at the
bottom and take the necessary steps to get there. Although
I was just a sculler, I was curious. So, when my station was
all cleaned up, I would observe the chefs, asking loads of
questions. My goal was to learn at least four or five new
things every day.”
Realising this is what he wants to do for the rest of his life,
Sam knew he needed the qualifications to level up. And,
with a little help from the hotel and a solid support system,
he got it! It wasn’t long before his experience would lead
him to Le Franschhoek Hotel in Cape Town – the biggest
step in his career.
During his seven years at the hotel, Sam went from chef de
22 Get It Magazine July 2023
partie up to junior sous chef. A growth spurt for which he
will remain ever thankful.
“At this point, I wasn’t just cooking. Such a position requires
people-, management- and admin skills, as well as a lot of
discipline. Let’s just say I learnt a lot about myself during this
time, haha.”
Little did he know his journey would take him full circle,
back to Mount Grace where it all started. They had opened
up a new restaurant – Rambling Vine – where Sam was
appointed senior – and later executive - sous chef. During
his tenure the restaurant had been on the top five list on Eat
Out for four years – Sam also being the master mind behind
the menu at the time.
From there, he moved to the kitchens of Protea Hotel
Manor as executive chef, after which he joined the
Cradle family.
“Look around you,” he says, gesturing to the vista from the
restaurant balcony that takes in a languorous morning with
a loping giraffe and grazing zebra in the distance.
“The Cradle is a very beautiful place to work. We take our
ecotourism very seriously. I leave Midrand in terrible traffic
– and by the time I turn into the hotel, my breathing has
slowed and I am happier, calmer.”
Having many recipes in the kitchen, this culinary guru lives
by two life recipes.
“I am a firm believer in the five P’s. Proper planning prevents
poor performance. Just as in the kitchen, you have to be
prepared in life too. If you plan properly, there’s no way you
can go wrong.”
“And secondly, don’t take life too seriously. We live in a very
complicated world, and if you give everything the power to
upset you, you’ll never be happy. So, if you can let go and
just be happy, life is going to be easy.”
When Sam isn’t in the kitchen, he can be found spending
quality time with his family – his wife Motshepo, 14-year-old
daughter Kathlego, 10-year-old son Neo and two-year-old
daughter Wandile.
“It’s simple. I love my family. I love what I do. And, I
absolutely love being here – where humankind began. I am
truly a lucky man.”
Sam’s famous slow roasted duck
Any chef worth their salt should have a signature dish.
Sam shares the recipe for his - slow cooked duck leg.
You’ll need: 3 duck legs; 3 tsp tamarind puree; 2 tsp soy;
3 tsp honey; 1 tsp sesame oil; 1 spring onion (finely
chopped); 1 cucumber; 150g rice noodles; 1 chilli (finely
chopped); salt; pepper
To make: Pre-heat oven to 180°C.
Dry the duck skin with absorbent paper, pierce the skin
and season both sides of the duck with a little salt.
Place duck on a baking tray and place in the oven for
between 1 hour and 15 minutes, and 1 hour and 30
minutes, until tender. Check the tenderness with a
skewer or the tip of a sharp knife.
While the duck is cooking prepare the glaze. Put the
tamarind, honey, soy and half the sesame oil in a bowl
and mix well.
Baste the duck leg with the glaze approximately 30
minutes before the end of its cooking time. Repeat this
a few times over the last half an hour.
Cook the rice noodles as per instructions, drain and
set aside.
Peel the cucumber lengthwise and place in a bowl. Add a
dash of sesame oil and a little salt. Mix well.
When you are ready to serve, quickly fry off the rice
noodles with the spring onion, a little salt and pepper
and any remaining sesame oil. Place the duck, cucumber,
noodles, chilli and any remaining glaze onto a platter and
enjoy this lovely dish to share.
No power? No problem!
We all know the frustration that comes along with having to
prepare a meal without electricity. Here’s Sam’s take on a quick,
healthy and hearty no-cook meal:
You’ll need: 200g smoked salmon; 1 baby red cabbage; 1 carrot;
2 cucumbers (shredded); 250g cocktail tomatoes; 3-4 pak choi
(sliced); 125ml french vinaigrette dressing; 125ml mayonnaise;
1 lemon; salt; pepper
To make: In a large bowl toss together salad ingredients. Drizzle
with french vinaigrette. Squeeze lemon over the salad and add
salt and pepper to taste.
Minestrone soup was the first meal i
prepared on my own and i’ll never forget
waiting eagerly for the campers to try it.
When i saw how they were smiling as they
Sweet SPAR Treats
From decadent hot chocolate to healthier, spiced fruit tea or spoil-yourself breakfasts
and puds ... in winter we’re all about treating ourselves, without breaking the bank!
The Ultimate French Toast Recipe
For a decadent brunch or an easy
dessert, you can’t beat French Toast.
You’ll need: 4 slices of bread of
your choice, 4 SPAR Eggs, ¼
cup SPAR Cream, a pinch of
salt, 2 Tbsp SPAR butter, a
dash of vanilla essence, 1
Tbsp SPAR Castor Sugar,
1 punnet SPAR Freshline
Berries, SPAR Squillos
Chocolate Hazelnut
Spread to taste, SPAR
Mixed Berry Jam to taste,
mascarpone to taste.
To make: Beat the eggs, cream, salt, vanilla
and sugar. Dip each slice of bread into the egg
mixture and leave to soak for two to three minutes.
Heat the butter in a non-stick pan and fry the
bread for two to three minutes on each side until
golden brown.
Top with hazelnut spread, strawberry jam
and mascarpone.
Spiced Fruit Tea Recipe
Typically, iced tea is enjoyed as a refresher in summer. However, as winter
approaches, the idea can be adapted and enjoyed as a warming drink as an
alternative to hot chocolate or coffee. Serves four to five.
You’ll need: 3 SPAR Organic Honeybush Tea Bags, 0.5 ml spice blend*,
600 ml boiling water, 30 ml SPAR Castor Sugar, 375 ml SPAR Apple Juice,
and 25 ml SPAR Lemon Juice.
To make: Start by making your spice blend*. You’ll need to combine
7 ml ground cinnamon, 10 ml ground nutmeg, 2 ml ground ginger and
1 ml ground cloves. You can store in a small glass jar in the fridge.
Place the tea bags and spice blend in a large teapot and pour on the
boiling water. Cover and set aside for three to four minutes.
Add the castor sugar and stir to dissolve.
Briefly warm the three fruit juices together in a pan over low heat,
and then stir into the tea.
Pour into heat proof mugs or suitable glasses with handles, and serve.
Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows
On a cold winter’s night, this is the real deal! A rich, thick hot chocolate with
full cream milk and melted, dark chocolate. Serves four
You’ll need: 2 cups SPAR Full Cream Milk, 1 tbsp fine granulated sugar, 1 tbsp
SPAR Hot Chocolate, 140g chopped good quality bittersweet chocolate, a
few granules sea salt.
To make: Heat the milk in a saucepan over a medium heat. Add the sugar
and SPAR Hot Chocolate, and whisk until dissolved.
Once the milk is hot and steaming, add the chopped chocolate and
salt and turn the heat down to medium low. Stir until the chocolate is
completely melted.
You can, for a thicker hot chocolate drink, keep whisking and cook at a low
boil for three to five minutes until it becomes thick and creamy.
Pour into mugs, and add about four or five marshmallows.
Berry Cheesecake Trifle
This makes a wonderful Christmas in July
dessert. So simple to put together but
really impressive to serve. Serves 12.
You’ll need: 2 packets SPAR Bakery Mini
Swiss Rolls, 60ml sherry or brandy
(optional), 1 pack SPAR Quick & Easy
Cheesecake, 2 packets SPAR Jelly (cherry or
strawberry flavour), 250ml frozen berries,
250ml SPAR Fresh Cream, Chocolate flake,
SPAR Bakery meringues.
To make: Slice the mini Swiss rolls into
small rounds, each approximately 1cm
thick. Arrange on the sides and base of a
glass serving dish. Sprinkle with sherry or
brandy if using.
Make up the cheesecake mix by pouring
480ml of cold water into a bowl. Add the
cheesecake mix and whip with an electric
beater on slow until just combined and
then on high for four to five minutes. Pour
over the Swiss roll circles and place in the
fridge while you prepare the jelly.
Make up the two jellies with 500ml of
boiling water. Stir until dissolved then
add the frozen fruit and 200ml cold water.
Allow to cool completely before pouring
over the cheesecake mixture. Place in the
fridge to set.
Decorate just before serving with whipped
cream, chocolate flake and meringues.
SPAR tip: Decorate with the meringues just
before serving so that they don’t go soft.
A simple French baking love story
Créme au chocolat et vanille de Mamie. Or Mamie’s chocolate and vanilla cream.
Whichever you call it, it’s one of the easiest, and most delicious, dishes in this
delightful cookbook, filled with French classics. In Et Voila!, Manon Lagréve (fans
of The Great British Bake Off will recognise her) shows that French baking may
be elegant, but doesn’t have to be pretentious or difficult. While there are a few
aimed at the more experienced baker, most of them can be whipped up by
the rest of us ... from desserts and gateaux to bonbons and biscuits, as well as
brilliantly helpful info on equipment and troubleshooting, hacks and finishing
touches. Sensationally illustrated, delicious in every sense. Welbek Publishing, R510
English Breaky) and infusions which are caffeine-free, made, they say, with
‘the finest, juiciest and bloody delish chunky fruits’ . We fancy the Ginger and
Lemon and this sassy Juicy Berry ... heavenly raspberries and strawberries and
inky blackberries, it’s tart, sweet and delish. R149 from smithhouseoftea.co.za
Chakalaka - rich, aromatic and robust
From the Zulu language, Chakalaka relays a sense
of togetherness, best mirrored by the popular
spicy proudly South African icon relish of the same
name. Believed to have originated amongst the
gold miners in the townships of Joburg, it was
probably a simple mix of leftover tomatoes, onions
and spices to add flavour to traditional local dishes.
Very popular at braais, this colourful versatile relish
is commonly served with meat and starches. But
we’re preferring our Chakalaka in this newly released
2019 Spice Route Chakalaka ... the Spice Route’s
signature Rhône-style red blend of six classic Rhône
varieties selected for their ability to harmoniously
express the unique terroir of the Swartland. Rich
and robust and velvety, all ripe juicy black currant,
cherry and plum notes, with white pepper,
spiced meats, smoky cloves, nutmeg and vanilla
complementing the wine’s bold fruit character, this
wine is full-bodied, intense, silky and smooth ... and
is a fantastic food wine. Equally at home in a fine
dining restaurant as at home around the fire ... it’s
lovely curry, bobotie, braaied spicy meat and is a
perfect complement to a charcuterie board, which
is our favourite way of entertaining. You’ll find it for
around R195 at your local wine store or online at
Baked chorizo gnocchi with Fat Bastard Shiraz
A lovely, easy dish for your next dinner party. This serves four, but is
easily doubled.
You’ll need: 1 Tbsp olive oil, 2 onions, finely sliced, 150g spicy chorizo,
skin removed & diced, 4 cloves of garlic, minced, 1 small fresh chilli,
finely diced, 2 tsp dried Italian herbs, 2 Tbsp tomato paste, 1x400g tin
diced tomatoes,125ml fresh cream, 500g potato gnocchi, quarter of
a cup fresh basil, roughly torn, 300g Fior di latte mozzarella, salt and
pepper to taste, olive oil, and fresh basil to garnish
Tip: You can cook this dish in an ovenproof pan / shallow casserole
from the beginning or else transfer everything to an ovenproof dish at
the end to bake.
To make: Preheat oven to 200ºC. Using a drizzle of olive oil, fry sliced
onions and chorizo over a medium heat until soft and golden brown.
Add the minced garlic, chilli and dried herbs and cook for 2 minutes.
Add the tomato paste and cook it off for a few minutes until it turns a
warm brick red colour and smells fragrant. Add the tinned tomatoes
and reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes until the sauce
has thickened slightly. Add the cream and season with salt and pepper.
Remove from the heat.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook
according to package instructions. The gnocchi will be cooked once it
starts floating on the surface. Be careful to not overcook.
Drain gnocchi and add it to the tomato sauce along with the fresh
basil. Mix well. Scatter over roughly torn pieces of the fresh mozzarella,
and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until bubbling and golden brown.
Garnish with fresh basil and a sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black
pepper. Serve with crusty bread, a fresh green salad and a glass of Fat
Bastard Shiraz.
PINK & PERFECT
Pruning. Planting. Fertilising and feeding.
There’s work to be done in the garden this July. Dig in!
Tangy, crunchy micro greens are the easiest of all veggies to
grow. In July, all they need is a warm, sunny windowsill or
room for germination. Look out for micro green mixes like
‘Rainbow blend’ or ‘Oriental Mix’ or make your own mix of
greens from a range of seeds like beetroot ‘Bulls Blood’,
Chinese cabbage, green mustard, radish, and marog
or baby spinach. Sow in seed trays every five to 10
days and snip with scissors when 2 – 4cm high.
Harvest the smallest, delicate shoots and sprinkle
on salads, roast veggies, open sarmies, and just
about any other dish.
We’re planting… Verbena ‘Cadet’ for winter into spring flowering.
This upright growing variety is equally suitable for growing in pots
or in the garden. It is a new breed of verbena that doesn’t go in
and out of flower, but consistently produces new blooms. It is also
highly resistant to powdery mildew. The compact plants grow 20-
25cm high with a spread of 30-36cm and they can be planted in
full sun or in positions that receive morning sun. The colour range
includes bright red, pink, purple and white. Its flowers attract
butterflies. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
What to do in the garden July
• Prune bush roses from 20
July onwards, and don’t forget
to add new compost to the
soil. Hydrangeas can also be
pruned in July. • Water during
the warmest time of the
day. Don’t let the soil dry out
completely because droughtstressed
plants are also more
susceptible to frost. • Fertilise
pansies, and other winter
flowers as well as leafy winter
veggies with a liquid fertiliser
once a month. • Trim deciduous
creepers. • Vegetables and
herbs in containers should be
watered twice a week and fed
every second week. • Protect
conifers from the Italian Cypress
aphid by spraying the stems
and foliage with an organic
insecticide or use insecticide
granules sprinkled around the
base of the conifer.
Don’t just think yellow, orange or red, if you want to warm up the home with
flowering houseplants. Pink is just as comforting and winter-flowering cyclamen
come in every shade of pink, carrying their clusters of delicate blooms above
heart-shaped green leaves. Plants do best in a cool room but with good light.
A bright, south or east-facing room is ideal and even a north-facing room, if it
doesn’t get too hot. Keep the soil moist but don’t overwater as the roots will rot.
Encourage new flowers by snipping off the old ones. Details: lvgplant.co.za
