CAN EELS STAR GUIDE NSW TO SERIES-SAVING ORIGIN VICTORY?
IT’S UP TO
YOU, MITCH
TROY DODDS
New South Wales will
attempt to save the State
of Origin series at Suncorp
Stadium in Brisbane tomorrow
night, and the weight of the state
is on the shoulders of Parramatta
halfback Mitchell Moses.
Moses makes just his second
Origin appearance for the Blues,
replacing injured halfback Nathan
Cleary.
It could be a career-defining
moment for the 28-year-old, who
recently signed a lucrative new deal
with the Eels but is still hurting
from last year’s Grand Final loss to
Penrith.
If Moses can guide the Blues to an
upset win in Brisbane and save the
series, it will set up a blockbuster
decider in Sydney on July 12.
He replaced Cleary in game three
of the 2021 series, with the Blues
losing 20-18.
“Last time I played it was pretty
much bite down on the mouth guard
for 70 minutes and do my best, I
didn’t want to let anyone down,” he
said.
“I’m just excited to get another shot
and excited to get out there.”
Moses believes the Blues have what
it takes to win at Suncorp despite
a disappointing showing against
the Maroons in the series opener in
Adelaide last month.
“I’m going to look to go out there
and do my job for the team,” he said.
“I’ve just to do the things that got
me here and focus on those things.
We have 1 to 17 quality players here
and if we all play at our best, we’ll
give ourselves a good shot.”
Moses admits there’s pressure on
him to deliver, but says he’ll take the
opportunity with open arms.
“You always want to prove people
wrong and you want to play in these
games. It’s what you play footy for,”
he said.
“It’s pretty exciting and it’s a big
test, but I’m just happy to be here
and hopefully we get a win.”
Moses also knows it’s important
to deliver given Cleary remains the
first choice halfback for the Blues.
If Moses can help rescue the series
and go on to guide the Blues to a
victory in Sydney, it would cement
his claim to hold the sky blue jersey
permanently.
“The number seven in front of me
is a pretty fair player I guess,” he
joked.
“He’s been probably the best player
of the last four years. I felt pretty
bad for him as he copped a bit of
criticism after game one.
“I get my chance, we’ll see how I
go.”
The Blues head to Suncorp
Stadium without Latrell Mitchell,
who is still being troubled by a calf
injury. Penrith’s Stephen Crichton
comes into the starting side to
replace him.
Kick-off on Wednesday is at 8pm.
Community News Update
Message from Mayor Lake
Refugee Week
Council is celebrating diversity, resilience and inclusion
during National Refugee Week, which commenced on
Sunday 18 June and concludes on Saturday 24 June.
This important week raises awareness of issues affecting
refugees by highlighting their experiences to the broader community to help
foster relationships and an understanding of those resettling in Australia. The
theme this year is ‘Finding Freedom’ which encourages Australians to think
about the millions of refugees who embark on dangerous journeys every day
to find safety and refuge. Council is hosting a talk on Wednesday 21 June at
Merrylands Library with former refugee, Oliver, who will be sharing his family’s
journey of fleeing war-torn Iraq to resettle in Australia. I would also like to
acknowledge the work of Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS) in
Auburn who work closely with people seeking asylum. RACS is an independent
public voice that has helped many community members seeking asylum by
providing critical free legal advice, assistance and representation.
Hector and Wolumba Street Bridge Project
Cumberland Council has joined forces with
City of Canterbury Bankstown to bridge
our communities in Chester Hill. Much
needed upgrades have been made to the
Wolumba Street Bridge and the Hector
Street Bridge in Chester Hill to allow drivers
and pedestrians to commute safely through
this area. This joint venture received direct
Federal Government assistance and has
significantly reduced congestion and travel
time. The upgrades included the widening
of both bridges to allow for two generous traffic lanes, the installation of
protection barriers and new footpaths, now providing a safe passage for
both motorists and pedestrians.
Jordanian Flag Raising Ceremony
I recently joined the Jordanian community
for the annual Flag Raising Ceremony
to mark the 77th Anniversary of Jordan’s
Independence. The flag of Jordan was
officially adopted on 16 April 1928 and is
based on the 1916 flag of the Arab Revolt
against the Ottoman Empire during World
War I. It was a great opportunity to come
together as a community and celebrate
our diversity and shared values of unity
and acceptance.
Cumberland Council has received an honourable mention at the 2023 National
Awards for Local Government for its Mentoring and Development Program.
The Mentoring and Development Program was developed to enhance the
skills and experience of emerging leaders across Council. This program
focused on ensuring equal opportunities for all staff and a key target was to
ensure that 50% of participants throughout the program were women.
The National Awards highlight initiatives and programs implemented by local
governments that are innovative, make a difference to their local communities,
display excellence, and have outcomes that are replicable across the country.
Well done and congratulations to everyone who participated in this program!
First look at Epping pool
Stunning designs give glimpse into rejuvenated aquatic centre with family focus
ELLIE BUSBY
The first look at the final plans for the
$26.88 million upgrade of the historic
Epping Aquatic Centre has been
revealed.
Work is expected to begin on the popular
swimming pool mid next year, with a new
design set to feature a 20-metre indoor pool
and an upgraded, more accessible 50-metre
outdoor pool.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Sameer
Pandey said the Epping pool has been a
much-loved part of this community since the
1960s, adding that the upgrade would deliver
more pool facilities while still retaining the
unique character of the centre.
“We’ve worked hard to ensure this upgrade
will retain what’s special about it – like its
connection to the surrounding bush – while
providing modern facilities that will ensure it
can be used by more of the community yearround,”
he said.
Along with the new indoor pool and
refreshed outdoor pool, Pandey said the centre
will also see plenty of new family-friendly and
accessible additions.
“For the kids, a reimagined family play area,
including upgraded shallow splash pools with
beach entry and water play equipment will be
included alongside the picnic area,” he said.
“In addition, two lifts will be installed
connecting the car park to the centre, and
we’ll deliver new change facilities for all users,
including family rooms.”
In 2015, Epping Pool, which was at the time
An artist’s impression of the upgraded Epping Aquatic Centre. Photo: City of Parramatta.
under the control of Hornsby Council, faced
closure. But a community group called Save
Epping Pool fought against the centre being
shut down, convincing Council to defer the
decision until a redevelopment plan was
made.
North Epping residents Drew and Rae
Bewsher, who are daily visitors to Epping
Aquatic Centre and have been coming to the
pool for the past two decades, are excited for
the upgrades, describing Epping pool as a
“hidden and undiscovered gem.”
“Epping pool is a vital community asset
which has been well-maintained and is wellloved
by the community. It’s the reason we
come to swim 20 laps here every day,” Drew
said.
“While our routine will have to change, we
understand the closure is necessary and we’re
pleased to see new facilities being added to
the centre and hope the City minimises the
closure period.”
Construction is expected to commence
after the 2024 swim season and take about 18
months to two years to complete.
City of Parramatta is inviting the community
to learn more about the final design and
talk to staff at two sessions planned later this
month. The sessions will be held on Tuesday,
June 20, from 3.30-5pm and Saturday, June 24,
from 9am-11am.
ABC wields the axe in wrong place
The ABC should not be immune from cuts
nor should it be forced to maintain the status
quo for the sake of tradition, but some of its
decisions of the past week are mindblowing.
To suggest the role of a Political Editor is not
needed in Canberra, digital transformation or
not, is absurd and shows a lack of core understanding
of how journalism works.
Andrew Probyn was one of the ABC’s finest
journalists and best assets, yet he finds himself
jobless and ramifications when it comes to
quality of output, experience and mentoring
younger journalists is huge.
For a broadcaster to dump its 7pm statebased
bulletins on Sunday, airing a national
bulletin instead, is a slap in the face to the local
traditions on which the ABC is built. It just
doesn’t stack up.
And tearing the heart out of its arts coverage?
Don’t get me started.
Tough decisions needed to be made, that is
understandable, but I can’t help but think the
ABC wielded the axe in all the wrong places
last week.
Change at the cost of responsibility
Ironically, it was Twitter that broke the news.
Last Thursday, in what seemed like a coordinated
campaign, every journalist I knew was
firing off 140 characters about the ABC making
its national political editor Andrew Probyn
redundant.
Canberra insiders from Phillip Coorey to
David Crowe and Michelle Grattan were
unanimous that it was an extraordinary,
head-scratching decision.
Even former NSW Premier Bob Carr weighed
in: “ABC News is bad already, crammed with
crime stories and scandalously missing big
international news. Sacking Andrew Probyn
and replacing him with junior reporters who
can get stuff on TikTok will drive down audience
even further. The chair and board must
reverse this”.
The restructure of 120 positions has been
justified by the national broadcaster as part
of its transition from a linear media organisation
(where news is collected for the end
of the day) to a digitally integrated content
approach. When former ‘Insiders’ host Barrie
Cassidy likened the deletion of Probyn’s position
to a restaurant saying it no longer needed
a head chef, ABC News Director Justin Stevens
responded: “The restaurant now is servicing
people in all sorts of ways. You’ve got Uber
drivers coming, wanting to take food home”.
Personnel changes are inevitable in a
world of changing consumption habits. Our
thoughts should always be with everyone losing
their jobs. Nonetheless, the position of national
political editor seems like an important
Index
News...........................................................1-15
layer of oversight and quality control. When
news is threatening to break (for example,
the Parliament House corridors are thick with
intrigue about a potential leadership spill) or
stories require fine editorial judgments – an
experienced hand must still interrogate the
sourcing and ensure rigour. The Canberra reporter
shouldn’t be able to get sign off from a
harried general news editor sitting in Ultimo.
Probyn’s was a high-pressure role requiring
true independence. That’s because if the
wrong call was made, an irate politician or
even Prime Minister would very likely ring the
ABC board with complaints.
As a former Sydney Morning Herald journalist,
I grew up watching the news. Mum
would have the television on for three hours
straight while we completed our homework.
The evening would start with Ten’s 5pm bulletin.
We’d catch the final puzzle on ‘Wheel of
Fortune’, followed by ‘Seven News’ with Roger
Climpson at 6pm, ‘SBS World News’, then ABC
with Richard Morecroft and Kerry O’Brien’s
‘7.30 Report’.
Having been reared on the legendary products
of its news division, I’m a strong believer
in a well-funded ABC. I’ve counted friends and
family who have worked there. Today, there
are hundreds of wonderful people throughout
the organisation.
Nevertheless, I am watching it less and it’s
because I’m among those who feel its news
values have deteriorated. One of my fundamental
perspectives in journalism came
from the ABC satire ‘Frontline’ in the 1990s.
Entertainment................................19-29
Business Directory.....................30-31
Sport..............................................................32
“Change is the natural enemy of news and
current affairs”, the grizzled news director
explained. Viewer habits tend to be conservative.
The ongoing success of shows such as ‘A
Current Affair’ raises the question – why tamper
with a proven formula?
So, yes – I freely admit – I lost interest when
‘Q&A’ moved from Mondays to Thursdays. I
didn’t like it when too much of ‘7.30’’s political
coverage became about the host and Laura
Tingle interviewing each other and filtering
the day’s events, rather than presenting a
straight Canberra package.
It irritated me when ‘Stateline’ got cut. For
those of us with busy lives, Saturday and Sunday
ABC 7pm bulletins should be the pinnacle
of the viewing week – a chance for some
higher-level perspective. Instead, there are
too many three-minute features about regional
dance troupes or obscure creatures going
extinct.
Some change is essential to move with the
times. Moving 300 staff to Parramatta from inner-city
Sydney will bring the national broadcaster
closer to its suburban audience. It will
help make the ABC’s journalism more relevant
and reflective. However, justifying Probyn’s
removal as the ABC moving to a ‘digital
first’ approach is worrying.
What exactly does that mean to the ABC’s
core audience, someone like my dear mother,
who would need to consult a dictionary to
learn what the word ‘digital’ even means.
How about ‘quality first’? Because there’s no
substitute for investing in the product.
Village to welcome new cafe
The new cafe will operate seven days a week. Photo: Conrad Gargett.
ELLIE BUSBY
Residents at Bolton Clarke’s Cabrini
Retirement Village in Westmead
will be excited to hear that they soon
won’t have to go far for a coffee, with plans
for a new café given the seal of approval.
Cumberland Council has recently
approved a Development Application
(DA) for a new café on the ground floor of
Deskford House, located within the Cabrini
Retirement Village.
The Statement of Environment Effects
(SEE) said the café is “ancillary to the overall
retirement village”, and will provide a
central place for visitors and residents to
gather and enjoy quality time, without the
need to leave the site.
“The proposal will provide a food and
drink premises that will service residents
of the retirement village, onsite employees,
visitors and local residents,” the document
said.
Original elements such as the fireplaces,
be retained and restored.
“The proposed changes to the historic
Inspiring journey
had tough start
LOCAL NEWS
ELLIE BUSBY
When Karen Upton was just threeand-a-half-years-old,
her family
were told she only had a five per
cent chance of surviving Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukaemia (ALL). 50 years later and she
not only defied the odds, but helps other sick
children to do the same.
Upton has spent most of her life in hospitals
– first as a patient and now, as a nurse at
the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW)
Operating Theatres for over 30 years.
Diagnosed in 1973, Upton was admitted to
the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children
(now The CHW) to begin treatment.
“It was pretty daunting. It was a time where
there wasn’t anything known about childhood
leukaemia at that stage,” she said.
“Unfortunately the treatment then was
pretty barbaric having four years of chemo
and four weeks of radiation… I was never
given any sedation for any of my procedures.”
Upton received lumbar punctures and had
purple lines drawn on her face to mark the
area where the radiation treatment was to be
administered. She said when she received the
cranial radiation she had pillows packed in
around her to stop her from moving.
“Parents weren’t allowed to stay overnight,
so you were left on your own, so that was
always quite daunting,” Upton said.
“Thankfully nursing staff always allowed us
to do things with them, I do remember being
at a nurse’s desk playing on a typewriter.”
Then at 13-years-old, Upton was given the
news she and her family had always been
dreaming of: she was finally cancer-free.
“It was a pretty big day for both myself and
my parents,” she explained.
“My mother promised me that if that day
came all I wanted was to get my ears pierced…
so two days later I got my ears pierced. A
pretty trivial thing for a 13-year-old but I had
been waiting all that time [for it].”
When it came to deciding what career
to pursue, nursing was the only thing she
wanted to do.
“It was just a way of me giving back the care
and the support I received as a child,” she said.
“I was just proud and grateful that by being
a nurse I would be able to contribute to the
medical profession and in particular paediatrics.”
Now a Clinical Nurse Specialist in General
Surgery at CHW, 53-year-old Upton is reflecting
on being cancer-free for 50 years as she
looks after young patients, who are themselves
going through cancer treatment.
“When I see a newly diagnosed patient it
kind of comes back to [home],” she said.
“I’m in a very privileged situation that I can
give people hope and that’s exactly why I
decided to take this journey.
“I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.” Karen Upton enjoys giving back as a nurse at CWH.
LOCAL NEWS
Tax time is coming: How to get
the most out of your return
CASSIDY PEARCE
Tax time is approaching once again,
and despite a few changes from last
year, there are still plenty of ways to
optimise your return.
According to Matt Free from ProYou in
Parramatta and A Grade Tax in Penrith, being
prepared is key.
“Going into tax time prepared is very
important to ensure that your tax return is not
delayed in being prepared or lodged,” he told
Parra News.
When it comes to how to do this, the basics
are the same, including ensuring that your
bank details are current with the ATO and,
if you are using a tax agent, trying to provide
them with a concise summary of income and
deductions.
“It’s important to ensure that you have
gathered all your receipts for work related tax
claims for this financial year,” he said.
“If you claim work related motor vehicle
expenses, make sure you have a logbook, or
a record of the business kilometres travelled
during the year.”
Free notes that there are a few changes that
taxpayers should be aware of as the end of the
financial year approaches.
“Low to middle income earners can expect
reduced tax refunds due to certain tax offsets
Matt Free. Photo: Melinda Jane.
finishing in the prior year. This could impact
taxpayers by up to $1500,” he said.
“Claims for working from home deductions
have also decreased from 80c/hour to 67c/
hour for 2023. The ATO will be looking at the
claims for working from home expenses to
ensure they are appropriate.”
However, he assures there are still plenty of
ways you can optimise your return ahead of
the June 30 deadline.
“If you need to purchase any work-related
equipment like computers or home office
expenses, do it before June 30, 2023 to get the
deduction in this year’s return. This is the
same for if you are considering donating to
registered charities,” he said.
“You can also top up your concessional
superannuation contributions to the maximum
deductible amount of $27,500. This
amount includes your employer contributions,
so be careful not to exceed the maximum.”
As always, the option is there to use the free
myTax service, which will have you done and
dusted in under 30 minutes. However, for
those dealing in more complex tax affairs,
including if you have traded in Cryptocurrency,
have rental property investments, or
are retired and have your own Self-Managed
Superannuation Fund (SMSF), seeing a tax
agent may be the best option.
“If you have any doubts about what you need
to declare as income or what you can claim as
a tax deduction, I would advise seeking out
assistance, rather than filing your tax return
on your own,” he said.
If you are preparing your own return, the
last date to lodge is October 31, 2023, If you are
using a tax agent, the lodgement date can be
as May 15, 2024.
Prociv, Maclean accepted
the role and thanked the
Chamber for its support.
“Thank you for putting this
trust in me and I accept the
position with great humility,”
he said.
“I really do feel like I’m in the
right place at the right time,
there’s so much occurring
in the city, [I] couldn’t be in a
more exciting Local Government
Area (LGA).”
Maclean was first elected
to Council in 2021 and represents
the Epping Ward. Born
and raised in Epping, he has
graduated with a Bachelor of
Business majoring in Economics
and Applied Finance from
Western Sydney University
(WSU).
Maclean added that he is
excited to continue to “champion
progressive change”
across the Parramatta LGA.
“We’re a city on the boom,
but we mustn’t think the work
is done, it’s scarcely begun and
I so look forward to advocating
for the growth of the city,” he
said.
“Way back in December 2021,
the good people of Parramatta
elected a progressive Council
and in the role that I’m now in
this capacity I look forward to
working with the Lord Mayor
to continue on this progressive
agenda, because that’s what
we were elected to do.”
Greens Councillor Phil Bradley
congratulated Maclean
on his new role, calling it an
outstanding result and adding
that his young age may have
created a new record in the
Parramatta Council.
“He shows experience well
beyond his age and I’m not
even sure what his age is,” he
said.
The election comes after
Pandey was elected as
Parramatta’s new Lord Mayor
last month, following former
Lord Mayor Donna Davis stepping
down, making him the
first Lord Mayor in Australian
history to be of Indian origin.
“I am very proud to be the first
Lord Mayor of Indian origin
anywhere in Australia, which
recognises the contribution
of people from the Indian
sub-continent are making to
the Australian community,”
Pandey said when elected.
“Parramatta is one of the
most diverse LGAs in the
country and we respect and
embrace the cultural distinctions
of all who are drawn to
live, work, invest in our beautiful
city.”
However, the new Lord
Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor
may not be in their positions
for long, with an election for
the roles to next take place in
September 2023.
Lord Mayor Sameer Pandey with newly elected Deputy Lord Mayor Cameron Maclean.
LOCAL NEWS
Family’s fight for residency
The Wentworthville community is getting behind family who face deportation
ELLIE BUSBY
Members of the Wentworthville
community are rallying around a
local family who are facing the risk
of being deported.
When Paola Yevenes found out that Clivin
Incy, his wife Laila and their two daughters,
Ann Maria and Ann Sapna, have been fighting
to become permanent residents of Australia
for 14 years, she couldn’t believe it.
“They’ve been around for years and we
actually all of us presumed they were not just
permanent residents, we presumed they were
Australian citizens because they’ve been
working and living among us for that many
years,” she said.
Yevenes, the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish
Secretary, originally met the family through
the Parish when they first moved to Australia
from India over a decade ago.
Describing the Clivin’s as “like family to
us,” Yevenes knew that the community had
to do something to stop the family from being
deported when their Visa expires on August 3.
That’s when she started the petition.
“I was so surprised that I needed to [start the
petition], Laila, Clivin and the girls are very
close friends of our Parish community,” she
said.
“I was first motivated by fear of losing them
from the community, I asked Laila if we were
The Wentworthville community are backing the Clivin family in their fight for permanent
residency.
able to start a campaign and we were able to
do that.”
Already signed by over 8,500 people, the
petition is urging the Minister for Immigration,
Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs
Andrew Giles to grant Laila and her family
permanent residency in the country.
Yevenes said she was shocked by the overwhelmingly
positive response the petition has
already received.
“We were really surprised about that reaction,
I didn’t expect anything like that at all
but so heartened to hear that so many people
care. They really do matter to our community,”
Yevenes said.
Laila, who works in the age care centre, said
it was “amazing” to receive the support of the
Wentworthville community, especially from
the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish.
“Me and my husband [arrived] in 2009, my
children arrived in 2013, since then we didn’t
go to any other Parish, we just stayed here,
that’s our home,” she said.
“Even the parish members, the Priest, the
Parish office including Paola and everybody
knows us very well, they couldn’t accept that
we are not a citizen of this country.
“The children have already been here for a
long time… I’m thinking about the future of
the kids.”
Describing them as “Australian citizens in
all but name,” Yevenes said the Clivin family
are friendly people who have contributed
to the community of Wentworthville and
surrounds.
“Sometimes it’s hard to get to them because
after Mass they’ll hang outside with a whole
bunch of new arrivals in Australia and they’re
always trying to help people to settle into
Australia,” she said.
“They’ve got a lot of people that support
them in the Parish… it’s like your aunties or
uncles, you just assume that they’re going to
be there all the time.”
Yevenes is now encouraging other people to
sign the petition, which can be found at www.
change.org/p/permanent-residency-for-theclivin-family-14-years-is-too-long.
Giles was contacted for comment but no
response was received by the deadline.
PARRAMATTA
PEOPLE
TURNING BACK TIME
Captured here is a drawing of
Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur,
born in 1788 in England.
Persuaded by his uncle John
Macarthur to accompany him
on his return to NSW, Hannibal
arrived in Sydney in 1805. Hannibal
married Anna Maria in 1812,
the daughter of former governor
Philip Gidley King.
In 1843, a Legislative Council of
36 members was granted to NSW
and Hannibal, who was at the
time residing at Subiaco on the
Parramatta River, was elected as
the first Member for Parramatta.
Hannibal had six daughters and
five sons, one of whom, George
Fairfowl (1825-1890), was headmaster
of The King’s School from
1869 to 1886. Hannibal died in 1861.
Check out this photo of
Wycombe House, circa 1911,
located at 222 Church Street,
Parramatta.
The shop sold items like drapery,
shoes and dress goods, as well as
men’s and boy’s clothing.
George Thomas Erby bought
the store in 1890, later purchasing
the surrounding shops to expand
Wycombe House.
In the book The Jubilee History
of Parramatta, Wycombe House
was described as “the most up-todate
and enterprising business
concern in Parramatta.”
Erby later retired from work in
1938.
CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE • WWW.JEANSFORGENES.ORG.AU
Help make the incurable, curable
When a parent gets the
devastating diagnosis
that their child has a
genetic disease, there is only one
thing that determines the child’s
future – research.
This Jeans for Genes Day on
Friday, August 4, everyday Australians
can help the scientists at Children’s
Medical Research Institute
in Westmead to change the future
for the one in 20 Australian kids
living with a genetic disease or
birth defect.
For 65 years, the scientists at
Children’s Medical Research Institute
have been doing cutting edge
work and today they are finding
treatments and cures for diseases
including epilepsy, cystic fibrosis,
cancer, devastating metabolic
conditions, genetic blindness, and
many more of the 6000 genetic
diseases that impact kids like
western Sydney resident Teddy
(pictured).
Research has also given answers
and hope to Teddy’s family.
He was diagnosed with a rare
neurodevelopmental syndrome
that impacts everything from
walking to talking.
“It can affect you out of nowhere
like this,’’ Teddy’s Mum Lucy said.
“You might even know someone
who has a condition that is being
researched by the team at Children’s
Medical Research Institute,
and they’re so close to some
incredible discoveries.
“We just need to tip it over the
edge.
“And money is the way that more
research happens.’’
The scientists at Children’s
Medical Research Institute can’t
find the cures without medical
research, and they can’t do the
research without your support.
Celebrate the 30th year of Jeans for
Genes Day on Friday, August 4.
This year there are so many more
ways to fundraise for research.
If you’d like to get fit, then why
not try Sofa to 6km or the Skipping
If cooking is more your thing,
then hold a Bake it Blue event. Of
course, there is always the original
BUSINESS
WITH HANNAH STACK
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011
Social Proof and why it’s important
to the success of your small business
THE DHARUG CONNECTION
A Special Weekly Feature dedicated to
promoting Indigenous culture, education
and respect in western Sydney.
Let’s talk about a powerful tool that
can supercharge your reputation and
skyrocket your business: social proof.
Here are the dos and don’ts of using social
proof effectively, which may take your small
business to new heights!
What is Social Proof?
Imagine this: You’re looking for a new
restaurant to try, and you stumble upon
two options. One has an empty dining area,
while the other is bustling with customers.
Which one would you choose? Most likely,
you’d opt for the crowded restaurant, assuming
it offers better food and service. That’s
the power of social proof in action.
Social proof, as referred to by Robert Cialdini,
refers to the psychological phenomenon
where people assume the actions of others
in an attempt to reflect correct behaviour.
It’s essentially the influence that other
people’s opinions and actions have on our
decision-making process.
Types of Social Proof and how to leverage
them
Now that we understand the concept, let’s
explore some of the most common types of
social proof that can work wonders for your
small business:
Testimonials and reviews
Encourage satisfied customers to leave
reviews and testimonials about their
positive experiences with your products or
services. Display them prominently on your
website, social media profiles, and other
marketing materials where your potential
customers might be looking.
Influencer endorsements
When collaborating with influencers,
ensure that they already have a loyal following
and that they align with your brand
values and target audience. Influencers help
you reach a wider audience, so don’t be afraid
to reach out and build relationships that can
bring your business into the spotlight!
Case studies and success stories
People love hearing examples of how your
products and services have made a positive
impact on customers that have the same
problems as them. Show detailed stories of
how your products or services have transformed
your customers’ lives or businesses.
Be specific – use metrics, and numbers, to
show the value you deliver. When potential
customers see the tangible benefits others
have experienced, they’ll be more inclined
to choose you.
Social media engagement
Active and engaged social media profiles
with a decent following create an image of
popularity and trustworthiness. Encourage
user-generated content by having your
customers share their experiences, leave
positive comments, likes, and shares, or
even posting photos and videos of themselves
using your products. UGC is a fantastic
way to showcase the love your customers
have for your brand and create a sense of
community around it.
Magistrate Thompson said.
Hosseini was convicted of the single o fence
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
There’s a Sun/Neptune square on
Monday, so steer clear of a smooth
operator who could lead you up the
primrose path to trouble. Check all
news and information carefully. If
something sounds too good to be true,
then turn around and start walking
in the opposite direction! Plus, with
peacemaker Venus and fiery Mars
activating your partnership zone, do
your best to turn up the charm as you
smooth over problems with an impatient
friend or a cranky colleague.
Venus and Mars both stimulate your
job zone so socialising with clients or
colleagues will help improve workplace
relations. If you’re looking for
employment, then put the word out
amongst close friends and within your
wider peer group. But your carefully
planned week could be turned upside
down when the Sun/Neptune square
throws some confusing factors into
the mix. Especially involving a personal
project, a family member or a
domestic matter.
You’re keen to jump in and act with
lightning speed, but other people may
need some time to adjust. Smart Rams
will aim to get the balance right between
being spontaneous and thinking
things through. Then – with the
Sun transiting into your home zone
(on Wednesday night) – it’s time to
focus on home and hearth, domestic
matters, your blood family or your
family of choice. Venus and Mars also
highlight creativity, as you connect
with your inner muse.
It’s a good week to entertain family
and friends at home, as Venus and
Mars stimulate your domestic zone,
Convivial conversation is a bonus. But
has an old relationship finally run out
of steam? Or is a fair-weather friend
criticising your behaviour and holding
you back? The planets urge you
to review your partnerships and peer
group and discard negative influences.
Surround yourself with positive
people who encourage your talents
and support your dreams.
Are you impatient for adventure,
excitement and success? Awesome
opportunities are circling around you,
but they’re not immediately obvious.
They are hidden in unexpected places,
waiting for you to discover them.
Gung-ho Geminis love to spring into
immediate action but – at the moment
– some of your best work will be done
quietly, behind the scenes. Others
may not notice what you’re currently
doing, but your efforts will be rewarded
in the months ahead.
On Monday, don’t let your Crab curiosity
(and fertile imagination) cloud
your better judgment. Step back and
view a complex situation from a wider
perspective, and a more realistic angle.
If something sounds too good to
be true, then it probably is! This week,
strive to get the balance right between
your public persona and your private
self. Some quiet time for rest and relaxation
is just as important as networking
with colleagues and socialising
with friends.
Lions can appear to be brazenly bold
but sometimes (on the inside) you feel
like a much less confident kitten. With
Venus and Mars both visiting Leo, it’s
time to talk up your talents, promote
your accomplishments and tackle life
with plenty of charm and chutzpah.
If you don’t believe in yourself; why
should anyone else? As birthday great
Nicole Kidman smartly observes,
“Life has got all those twists and turns.
You’ve got to hold on tight and off you
go.”
Adventurous Virgo – this week the
positive Jupiter/Saturn link is terrific
for educational matters, travel arrangements,
creative partnerships
and joint ventures. But don’t let yourself
be deceived by fake news, side
tracked by dubious friends, or distracted
by empty promises. Keep your
eyes wide open and your feet firmly
planted on the ground! Wednesday
and Thursday favour proactive pronouncements
at work and lively conversations
at home.
This week Venus and Mars favour
romance, friendship and fun. It’s also
a terrific time to network and socialise
with colleagues, as you mix business
with plenty of pleasure. Librans are
clever and capable but are you confident
enough for big time success? The
Sun shifts into your career zone (on
Wednesday night) so step up and assume
a leadership role. And remember
that your deft diplomatic skills are
constantly required at home and at
work.
If you’re looking for a promotion
or a new job, now’s the time to strike
as lucky Venus and proactive Mars
enhance your professional persona.
Communicating with work colleagues,
clients and customers will
also improve, as you initiate contact
and relationships run more smoothly
than usual. The positive Jupiter/Saturn
link should also benefit partnerships,
of the romantic and platonic
variety. So stop sulking and stewing,
and start mingling!
Early in the week, Jupiter (your power
planet) makes a rare positive link
with karmic taskmaster Saturn. You’ll
find enthusiasm and luck combined
with hard work and persistence will
lead to success. So roll up your sleeves,
put your shoulder to the wheel, and
get to it! Your motto for the moment
is from prolific inventor and businessman
Thomas Edison, “Opportunity
is missed by most people because it
is dressed in overalls and looks like
work.”
On Monday, Saturn (your power
planet) makes a rare positive link with
prosperity planet Jupiter. So you’ll
find enthusiasm and luck combined
with hard work and perseverance will
take you far. But you need to be your
own cheer squad as you keep on keeping
on, with passion and persistence.
Your mantra is from inventor and
businessman Thomas Edison, “Many
of life’s failures are people who did not
realise how close they were to success
when they gave up.”
SPY COMEDY
LANDS AT
RIVERSIDE
CASSIDY PEARCE
From Thursday, June 29, Skyduck &
Co, SquareSums&Co. and Riverside
Theatres will be presenting action
spy comedy ‘Skyduck: A Chinese Spy
Comedy’ in the Lennox Theatre.
Written and performed by Sam Wang, the
show begins in 1993, when China’s Operation
Skyduck sees super spies Captain
Yan and Agent Yang sent to steal America’s
prized flight simulation software. But,
they quickly find themselves trapped by
Commander Kendrick – a hotshot NSA
agent with a plan to detroy China’s military
ambition once and for all.
Playing all seven characters himself,
Wang has created a bilingual parody of
East meets West, wherein the roles of the
Chinese heroes are performed in Mandarin,
with English subtitles – think Chinese
‘Top Gun’ with 007 to a J-Pop backing track.
The show is also a spectacular display
of technological integration, with Wang
instead joined on stage by a blend of
impressive lo-fi and high tech, including
projection, puppets, musical numbers and
handmade gadgets.
After premiering in 25A at Belvoir St
Theatre, ‘Skyduck’ earned Wang a nomination
for Best Male Lead in an Independent
Production at the Sydney Theatre Awards
in 2019.
PREVIEW
PREVIEW
The Flash
Elemental
2 hours, 24 minutes 1 hour, 49 minutes
Worlds collide in ‘The
Flash’ when Barry uses his
superpowers to travel back
in time in order to change
the events of the past.
But when his attempt to
save his family inadvertently
alters the future, Barry
becomes trapped in a reality
in which General Zod
has returned, threatening
annihilation, and there are
no Super Heroes to turn
to. That is unless Barry
can coax a very different
Batman out of retirement
and rescue an imprisoned
Kryptonian… albeit not the
one he’s looking for.
Ultimately, to save the
world that he is in and return
to the future that he
knows, Barry’s only hope
is to race for his
life. But will
making the ultimate sacrifice
be enough to reset the
universe?
Disney and Pixar’s ‘Elemental’
is an all-new,
original feature film set in
Element City, where fire-,
water-, land- and air-residents
live together. The
story introduces Ember,
a tough, quick-witted
and fiery young woman,
whose friendship with
a fun, sappy, go-with-theflow
guy named Wade challenges
her beliefs about the
world they live in.
‘Elemental’ is directed
by Peter Sohn (‘The Good
Dinosaur’, ‘Partly Cloudy’
short), produced by Denise
Ream (‘The Good Dinosaur’,
‘Cars 2’), and features
the voices of Leah Lewis
and Mamoudou Athie as
Ember and Wade, respectively.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Wine with country
Country crooners may
love singing about whiskey
and beer, but let’s not forget
about wine!
Hannah Ellis (pictured)
has just dropped a new song
and video, ‘Wine Country’.
The video was filmed at a
winery in California, with
Ellis frolicking through the
fields as she sings about
trucks, bonfires and of
course, wine.
It’s out now on all streaming
services, while the video
can be seen on YouTube.
Barrett’s ‘Glory Days’
Gabby Barrett has given us
a hint of what to expect on
her forthcoming album with
the release of new single,
‘Glory Days’.
“This song means so much
to me and is about all the
little things that make my
life so full,” Barrett said.
“These are my ‘Glory Days’,
and I’m so excited to introduce
my sophomore album
with it.”
The song is out now on all
streaming services.
Long-awaited return
King Calaway has returned
with a brand new song,
‘Tennessee’s Waiting’, from
the forthcoming album of
the same name.
“It’s been four years now
since the release of our
debut album; in that time,
we’ve experienced a lot of
change and growth as individuals
and as a band,” King
Calaway said.
“Our style and approach
to music has evolved. We
became stronger songwriters
and performers, and
we’ve finally made Tennessee
feel like home.
“It felt right for us to name
this record ‘Tennessee’s
Waiting’ because of the
connection we’ve made
to our new home and the
communities within. This
album tells our stories the
best way we can, and we’re
excited to finally share it
with the world.”
The album will be available
in August.
Electric Eels surge into top eight
NATHAN TAYLOR
After a slow start to the season, which
saw many pundits write them off,
the Parramatta Eels are back in the
top eight and firming as a real premiership
threat once again.
Without the likes of Mitchell Moses, Dylan
Brown and Junior Paulo leading the way,
the Eels chalked up one of their best performances
of the season, thrashing old rivals
Manly 34-4 at CommBank Stadium.
While the Sea Eagles were also down on
some key troops due to Origin commitments,
it was Parramatta who handled the adversity
best with a six-try to one performance.
Prior to other results playing out over the
weekend, Saturday night’s victory saw the
Eels climb from 10th and into the top four
before settling in eighth spot after 16 rounds.
Bailey Simonsson scored a double in the
carve up, while Ofahiki Ogden, Clint Gutherson,
J’maine Hopgood and Makahesi Makatoa
also crossed the line.
Eels coach Brad Arthur was thrilled with the
result, praising his side’s defence post-game.
“The bit I’m really pleased with is that they
are enjoying the tackle and they’re enjoying
working together in defence,” he said.
The match, in front of 21,296 fans, was a
strange one for Arthur who coached against
his son Jake, now a Sea Eagle, for the first time.
The Eels will travel north this week to battle
the Dolphins on Saturday afternoon.
