Park Ave. Bike LaneBeyond The Centreline 2017 competition entryCollaboration w. Wayne Yanproposed location: New York Citytypology: cycling path34
Park Avenue is one of the widest and busiest streets in Manhattan,but stands out for its large planted medians in the centreline of theroad. The ‘Beyond the Centreline’ competition called on designersto rethink this unused strip of urban fabric and propose possibleinterventions. Our proposal is to incorporate a new two-way cyclingtrail along the centre of the median, painted with bright rianbowcolours. Buffered from the busy road on either side by the existingvegetation, this trail would be be a safe and easy for drivers to see,.The path would fill in a major existing North-South gap in Manhattan’sbike path network, connecting Spanish Harlem at 97th street allthe way Union Square at 14th Street. The path would also passthrough Grand Central Station at 42nd, the city’s busiest commutertransit node. The rainbow scheme is both an homeage to the city’stolerance and diversity, and a visual attraction for instagrammers andNew Yorkers alike, adding a fun splash of colour to an otherwisemonochrome urban landscape.The bike lane would anticipatea large amount of cycling trafficdue to its midway connectionpoint at Grand Central as well asits uninterrupted, two-way North-South traffic flow. It would cost verylittle to build and maintain, andhelp reduce automobile congestionon one of the city’s most importantcommercial thoroughfares.
