The city of Seoul, South Korea, is plagued by dangerous levels ofair pollution. As the city is constantly growing and changing, cityplanners, developers and architects must play a role in solving thiscrisis. The Se16 Seoul Clean Air Competition called upon architectsand designers to propose possible strategies.Our proposal is a 2-tiered, modular, mass-produceable and scalablefacade system designed to clean air pollution on a mass scale byconverting, through a chain of reactions, organic pollitants intoalgae biomass and oxygen. The facade system is designed asan architectural product that can be easily attached to much ofthe city’s existing residential buildings as an array of louvres andpanels. The design capitalizes on the fact that much of Seoul’s builtform is comprised of nearly identical soviet-block style residentialtypologies which offer a large amount of surface area with which toattach these panels and thus maximimize their effieiency.32CAPITALIZING ON THE EXISTINGBUILT FORM OF SEOULOur facade system is designed as a pair of supplemental modularproducts tailored for mass production and assembly on the city’s definitivebuilding types. Vast regions of Seoul’s urban fabric are defined by clustersof identical residential towers such as these shown in the suburb of Gaepodong.Proliferated on a mass scale, our system would cover a significantsurface area of these towers as new urban “green space”, reducing pollutionlevels while simultaneously improving the asethetics of the built environment.A HORIZONTALLOUVRE SYSTEMtakes in CO2 and other organic particulatesto grow algae within a system of waterpipes. The pipes circulate the water andalgae uniformly throughout the system. Insunnier weather the algae blooms becomemore opaque, providing shade for passivecooling, whereas in cooler tempertauresthe pipes can be emptied to preventfreezing and allow unabated solar gain.This map show the green acreage of Seoul if our system was applied to every existingresidential neighborhood of this typology.
