UT Convention hall and

sports complex

This building at the University of

Tehran is a multi-functional complex

that houses sports spaces, educational

and office spaces, and a convention

hall. The design faced challenges in

properly allocating and differentiating

the different functions within the

limited land area of approximately

2,000 meters. The building can be

accessed from the main street of

campus via stairs due to the slope of

the ground, and the sports complex

can be entered from level -2. The

building is connected to the courtyards

of other faculties through a crossing.

The main entrance to the convention

center is located on the northern front

of the building on the main street of

campus and leads to a large lobby

with a capacity of 750 people. The

700-person auditorium is located on

the top floor, while workshops, classes,

and smaller gathering halls are located

on the underground floor. All service

sectors and stairs are situated on the

A Contemporary Interpretation of Local Solutions

In the mild and humid northern region of Iran, traditional houses often consisted of two stories. The primary living areas

were located on the second floor, featuring a surrounding balcony. This semi-open space served as the heart of daily

life, where the gentle breeze circulated, creating an optimal atmosphere for social interactions and activities.

In the villa that I designed, I sought to honor the traditional values of the area, drawing inspiration from the local

architecture in both form and function. While staying true to the essence, I made some modifications to align with

contemporary preferences. Instead of the traditional outside open stairs, I opted to connect the floors internally,

reflecting the present-day preference for seamless transitions. The timber frame roof retains its resemblance to the

past, preserving its charm. However, the primary structure of the house utilizes modern materials, such as concrete,

blending the timeless aesthetic with contemporary construction techniques.

Rayan Villa

This three-story villa is located in

the hillsides of the Karkas mountains

in central Iran and benefits from a

scenic view. Drawing inspiration from

the Iranian Koushk concept, where

the harmony between water and

architecture connects the inside and

outside spaces, this design beautifully

blends functionality with nature. It

is designed for hosting family and

friends gatherings, with a living room

and kitchen on the ground floor,

bedrooms and a home office on the

first floor, and recreational spaces

like a pool and workout room on the

underground level. The pool connects

the inside and outside spaces and the

architectural form is influenced by the

user’s needs, the site’s topography,

and local forms and materials found

in the Karkas mountains area (brick is

the main material used). To withstand

harsh temperature changes, the villa

has a fortress-like design with limited

openings, but still incorporates nature

through its terrace and backyard.

Embracing Iranian Koushk Inspiration

The concept of Koushk in Iranian architecture

beautifully merges indoor and outdoor spaces,

creating a harmonious connection with nature.

This design approach embraces the arid

environment of Iran, where bringing water inside

a semi-open structure has been a traditional way

to establish a profound link with nature.

Badroud service area

This service area is located along

the Kasan-Isfahan freeway. The main

building, which resembles a traditional

caravansary, offers travelers a range

of amenities and services, including

restaurants, restrooms, prayer rooms,

bazaars, stores, and guest rooms

for short stays. The courtyard in the

center of the building features a water

pond and trees, creating a refreshing

environment in the otherwise arid

desert. The walls of the building are

mostly closed to the outside, but are

designed to be transparent towards

the courtyard, providing a view of the

lush greenery and water. The complex

also includes several service spaces

Iranian traditional Caravansaray: A

Fortified Oasis in Arid Landscapes

In the vast and arid landscapes of Iran, a remarkable

architectural marvel emerges—the traditional

Caravansaray. These ancient structures served

as fortified oases along the historic trade routes,

offering security and shelter to weary travelers.

With their distinct design, Caravansarays created a

sanctuary amidst challenging environments.

While the traditional Caravansarays flourished

in bygone eras, their legacy continues to inspire

modern architecture and design. The principles

of security, shelter, and community found in

these ancient structures have transcended time,

influencing contemporary approaches to creating

safe and welcoming spaces.

The Tombs of the anonymous Martyrs

of Gorgan monument is ordered by

municipality of Gorgan to honor the

resistance of martyrs. The design

is a modern version of traditional

imamzadeh architecture with a circular

dome, commonly found in northern

provinces. The building consists of a

solid concrete core and has a semiclosed

space accessible from four

directions. The exposed concrete has

no decorations to convey a simple

Kitchen renovation

As the lead designer and contractor

for a kitchen renovation project in

an old apartment, my responsibilities

were extensive and demanding. The

existing kitchen space was limited,

presenting challenges in terms of

accommodating all the necessary

elements. In order to address this, I

embarked on the development of a

simple yet contemporary design that

would maximize the use of the available

space. One innovative solution was to

create a small laundry in the corner

of the kitchen to house the washing

machine. This not only made better

use of the corner space, but also freed

up room for other elements within the

kitchen.

I used AutoCAD to develop detailed

plans for the construction of cabinets

made of MDF. The 3D visualization of

the plan was then presented to the

customer for approval. Throughout

the construction process, I closely

monitored the installation and

assembly of all parts, ensuring that

they met the highest standards of

quality and safety. The end result was

a modern, functional kitchen that

met the customer’s expectations and

exceeded their initial vision.

Coffee Table in European

Beech

To ensure proper functionality, it’s important to only glue

the center tenon and leave the other two unglued.

Furniture plays a crucial role in defining

the architectural character of a space

and has always been a source of interest

for me. I developed a fascination for

furniture design, particularly wooden

furniture, and conducted extensive

research to understand the properties

and behavior of wood. In my studies, I

became familiar with various types of

wood joints used in woodworking.

Recently, I designed a table that

combines sturdiness with ease of

disassembly for flat storage. The

table features wedges that can be

quickly removed or installed, offering

remarkable strength. Additionally,

I utilized breadboard ends for the

table top, which is made from solid

wood. Breadboards offer excellent

durability, helping to prevent cupping

and twisting, while still allowing for

seasonal movement in a controlled

direction.

Parts as they are disassembled. A simple and repeatable

way is used to attach the top to the base that only

requires two bolts.

I chose a harder specie for the wedges to ensure they will last for

decades. Persian jujube wood, with the average Janka hardness

that equals ebony, seemed a suitable choice. With its reddish tint, it

compliments the beech beautifully.

Brass parts attach the table top firmly to the legs while

allowing seasonal movements of the wood. The top is

chamfered all around for a lighter look.

In this design, instead of concealing

the connection between components,

through-tenons and bridles are used

to showcase the structure. This

creates a visually appealing aspect

to the design, highlighting the joinery

and making it a beautiful feature in its

own right.

Photography

As a student, I developed a passion for

architectural photography during my

trips to explore Iranian architecture.

This interest later expanded to include

nature photography and portraiture. In

my photos, I place a strong emphasis

on natural light, carefully considering

its amount, color, and direction to

capture the mood and atmosphere of

a location or subject.

I took this photo at the Nasir-ol-molk Mosque in Shiraz,

and it perfectly captures the extraordinary quality of light

in this place. In the morning, when sunlight streams

through the vibrant windows, the entire space transforms

into a breathtaking celebration of light and colors. Being

there is a mesmerizing experience, as you can't help

but be captivated by the vibrant hues, intricate tiles, and

beautiful carpets that surround you.

One sunny afternoon in an old neighborhood of Isfahan,

I noticed a bicycle repair shop that was the only store

open at that time. I was immediately drawn to the sight

of two old bicycles and an elderly couple in the distance.

It caught my attention, so I took a photo to capture the

moment.

In this picture, you can see an old man coming out of

a funeral service at the Hakim Mosque in Isfahan. The

scene has a special mix of both life and death, with

sunlight and shadows playing together in the area. The

atmosphere is solemn and contemplative, making you

pause and think deeply.

I frequently embark on journeys to

the enchanting villages nestled in the

northern region of Iran. Captivated by

the inherent charm of their architecture, I

am compelled to document the seamless

integration of these structures with

their natural surroundings. Through

my photographs, I aim to portray the

essence of simplicity and the delightful

ruggedness that characterizes the

everyday objects in these locales.

I was truly amazed by the abundance of ancient sites scattered throughout the streets of Rome. It felt like stepping

into a time tunnel, witnessing the blend of the past and present right before my eyes. During my stroll, I couldn't resist

capturing this photo, which beautifully showcases the iconic Roman trees framing the church of Santi Luca e Martina

as I walked down a street.

52 | Hobby | Photography Hobby | Photography | 53

Whenever I glance upward, I am

always fascinated by the enchanting

ceilings found in Iranian architecture.

It seems as though the designers

aimed to convey that there is even

more beauty when we shift our focus

from the ground to the sky. They

encourage us to explore a world of

breathtaking magnificence above us.

I have a strong passion for capturing the interplay

of light and darkness in my photography. It amplifies

my admiration for the significant influence of light,

particularly when contrasted with a shadow of a different

nature. This interplay also emphasizes the contrasting

qualities of openness and solidity, adding depth and

intrigue to my work.
