Live-in care can provide peace of mind
for family members who may worry about
their loved ones living alone. Knowing
that a trained caregiver is there to aid and
support can be comforting and reassuring.
Live-in care can be more flexible than
other types of care arrangements, allowing
clients to maintain their independence
while still receiving the support they need.

Our thanks as ever go to our
wonderful volunteers and
dedicated staff who enable us
to provide our much-valued
services to those affected by
life-limiting illness across our
New Forest, Waterside and
Totton communities. We are
also hugely grateful to those
who help us in so many other
ways – as supporters, partners
and fundraisers. Thank you.
Welcome to our Spring/Summer edition of the
newsletter. We are delighted that due to an
extremely generous donor we plan to develop a
new Nurse Specialist role to work directly with
patients and families affected by Dementia.
The Retail team are growing and we have a new shop in
Lymington, with more planned. Ampress Park, Fairview and
Highcliffe continue to grow, so thank you for all your donations
and purchases – they are amazingly generous as the shops are
entirely dependent on your support.
Our Wellbeing services provide support for visitors to the
drop-in centre, for anyone impacted by illness and we have
trained volunteers who are there to chat over a cup of coffee
and cake and have additional support groups. Oakhaven now
cares for in the region of 1,000 patients, carers and bereaved
every year.
Our lovely fundraising team work hard to raise funds for the
Hospice and have planned many events including the Family
Fun Day being held on Saturday 24th June – hopefully we will
see you there, along with some sunshine. Also looking forward to
seeing you at the Annual Golf Day at Barton On Sea.
Oaktober is a new fundraising initiative where for the whole
month of October, you can choose your own way to raise
funds – the challenge is to be different. I’ll be looking out for
some interesting ideas! For a full explanation, there is more
info on page 20, or at www.oakhavenhospice.co.uk/oaktober.
Sustainability is key to the future of the hospice and regular
giving is one of the ways we rely upon our community as an
income stream. Thanks to all who continue to support us so
generously.
Lastly, it just leaves me to say I hope that you and your
families have a lovely Summer.

Denise Majors talks about her
time so far with Oakhaven
Denise joined us last year, as Director of Patient Services, and
today she talks about how her first 9 months have gone
I
find it hard to believe that 9
months has gone by since I
started in my role as Director
of Patient Services at Oakhaven.
There have been ongoing
developments during that time
across the services, many of
which have also had new leads
joining since the summer of
2022. This includes a new Ward
Leader for the In-Patient Unit
(IPU), Patient and Family Support
Team Lead and a Wellbeing
Co-ordinator. The enthusiasm
across all the services to
develop and support the
community is palpable and I am
incredibly proud to be part of an
organisation with such dedicated
staff and volunteers.
The recovery from the
pandemic has affected everyone
in different ways but the lifting
of restrictions has allowed us to
open our doors again in many
ways. I felt very privileged to
provide the address at the Light
up a Life Services in Lymington
and Hythe in December,
particularly as these were the
first services for some time. It
felt very special to be part of the
remembrance of so many people
touched by Oakhaven.
In the last newsletter, we
talked about the plans to launch
our Single Point of Access (SPA)
service and to broaden the
reach of Wellbeing Services. I
am pleased to say that the SPA
commenced in June 2022. This
has resulted in the impact we
hoped for, allowing us to respond
to calls and signpost people
more effectively depending on
the help they require. This also
allows us to deploy staff more
rapidly if required to patients
within the community. There
has also been success with the
start of our Wellbeing ‘pop-ups’ in
community centres and cafes in
Lymington, New Milton, Milfordon-Sea
and Hythe and a welcome
gradual increase in the numbers
of people attending the Coates
Centre.
A specific focus for me this
year, is to understand more about
the experience of those people
who use our services and how
we use that feedback to make
plans for the future. I am looking
forward to the year working with
all the teams across Oakhaven
to ensure we continue to deliver
high quality services and ‘make
every moment matter’.

Based on a similar model
from St Christophers
Hospice, the idea is to work
with local schools and colleges
with young people aged from 6
to 20 years coming along to the
hospice, to find out what goes on
and to meet staff, volunteers, and
patients.
One of the games played with
the younger children is wrapping
items of medical equipment,
used in The Inpatient Unit, and
having a Lucky Dip! The pupils
then take it in turns to unwrap a
parcel and try and identify what
the items are used for!
On the final day of the project,
parents are invited along and
watch the students perform some
songs for the entertainment of
the Acorn patients.

Husband and
wife volunteer team
Cathy and Paul Boynton have
been volunteering for Oakhaven for
over 12 years and are an integral
part of the volunteering family here
at Oakhaven.
So, what first made you think about
volunteering at Oakhaven Hospice?
Cathy: ‘When we retired to the New Forest, we
were both keen to do some volunteering, but
separately, so that we would have something
to talk about in the evenings! I have always
thought that the hospice movement has a
great philosophy which is why I approached
Oakhaven’.
Paul: ‘It was Cathy who first introduced me
to Oakhaven. She was already volunteering on
Reception and she mentioned a new scheme
called Neighbours and thought it would suit me’.
Cathy: ‘Yes, I suggested that Paul considered
volunteering for Oakhaven. I had found the
management, support and training offered to
be excellent, so that’s how we both became
Oakhaven volunteers – in separate roles, of
course!’
Cathy (right)
undertaking
her reception
duties on Day
Hospice reception
and Paul (above)
spending time as
a neighbour.
What is your role at Oakhaven and
what does it involve?
Paul: ‘All of my roles are completely
different. With the Neighbours I am
a Team Leader covering the north of
the New Forest. I match people who
have been referred to the scheme with
Neighbour volunteers. I also do a shift in
the Wellbeing Hub in the Coates Centre,
10
matters
Kathryn Marsh, Volunteer Services Coordinator, says: ‘Cathy and Paul are a great
team. They have given so much time and commitment to Oakhaven over the years in a
variety of roles. Their knowledge and skills are invaluable and help us to give excellent
service to everybody. We have a whole range of volunteer roles at Oakhaven, so why
not get in touch and see if there’s one that would suit you and help us to make every
moment matter for our patients, their families and friends’.
Contact: volunteering@oakhavenhospice.co.uk
where I welcome visitors, listen to them to see
what they need and explain the range of services
that Oakhaven can offer. Just as important can
be ensuing that there is plenty of coffee and
cake. I also started volunteering at the furniture
shop in Hythe when they were short of people,
and I really enjoy the variety of ways that I
can support Oakhaven. I also helped out at the
recent New Forest Volunteer Fair, recruiting
potential new volunteers for Oakhaven’
Cathy: ‘Like Paul, I’ve had a few different
roles, including being an Admin volunteer,
Relaxation Volunteer (trained to give hand
and foot massage to patients and carers), and I
also helped in one of the shops. However, I get
the most satisfaction from the reception roles
which I started with. I still cover Day Hospice
and the Inpatient Unit receptions twice a week
and thoroughly enjoy meeting and greeting
the visitors and patients. I also answer the
telephone and help out with admin tasks to
support the staff. I like to be busy!’
What do you most enjoy about it?
Cathy: ‘When I tell people that I volunteer for
the hospice, I often get the response “That
must be really depressing”, but I tell them
that it is the very opposite. It is uplifting – the
staff are so positive and supportive to patients,
relatives, carers, colleagues and volunteers and
makes a lovely environment to be in. For me,
volunteering is not a chore or sacrifice. It is a
great thing to do and I get out of it as much, if
not more, than I give’.
Paul: ‘I get a tremendous amount of enjoyment
from meeting people and helping them. I had
a very good headmaster at school who was
constantly saying “You only get out of life what
you put in” and that is the ethos I have always
followed. Volunteering at Oakhaven is very
fulfilling and I certainly get more out of it than
I put in. Thanks to Cathy for suggesting it all
those years ago!’
Giving the gift of time, our volunteers are a vital part of
the Oakhaven family.

Wellbeing community pop up sessions
Oakhaven Wellbeing is based at the Coates
Centre, within the grounds of Oakhaven
hospice. We feel it is important that the
community understand what we do. We
are regularly going out to local community
centres or coffees shops for our wellbeing pop
up sessions. This allows us to meet people
that may be new to the area, or who might
not know where we are based, as well as
those that cannot access the Coates Centre,
to seek support and ask questions about
where they could go for the help. It is a great
opportunity for people to speak up about
what is important to them, so we can shape
Oakhaven Wellbeing’s future on the needs of
the community.

Carers provide a vital role in supporting loved ones facing illness, the Coates
Centre provides support, advice and a place to share experiences.
matters
For those who attend our art group, sharing activities such as painting and a cup of tea brings joy and friendship.
Carers matter
Based within the grounds of Oakhaven hospice,
Lower Pennington Lane, Lymington, the Coates
Centre is currently open Monday to Friday,
10am to 4pm. It is run by trained volunteers
who welcome you for a friendly chat, support,
and a cuppa.
The Coates Centre focuses on supporting
people affected by the loss of a loved one, those
living with a life-limiting illness, as well as
carers.
Carers play such an important role in our
society, looking after people with an illness, the
elderly and/or palliative clients. Sadly, carers
are often invisible in our society and not given
the support they need to feel well. They are
often isolated due to the needs of people they
care for and find it hard to find the support in
the community. Oakhaven Wellbeing recognises
the need of the carer to be seen, supported and
their voices to be heard.
People that come to the Coates Centre often
comment that it is the coming together with
others, going through similar experiences,
that helps. They explain that they do not
have to justify how they are feeling or be
asked awkward questions. It is just enough
to understand that others understand them,
where they are right now, with no expectations
or answers. It is so lovely to see the mutual peer
support that people give each other and over
time the friendships that develop. This can be
during an art session, chatting over a cuppa
with one of our volunteers, or sharing benefits
of attending one of our mindfulness sessions.
Compassionate community
Oakhaven Wellbeing recognises the need to
collaborate and connect with the community.
We are working alongside organisations,
charities and agencies, as well as local
hospital trusts we are providing support for
many people. However, we want to widen
that support. Oakhaven has joined the
Compassionate Communities UK, a national
public health project that recognises the
strength of people caring for each other, by
educating, advising and supporting each other
to build a network of community connections.
Community matters… Oakhaven Wellbeing
helps connect the community, making every
moment matter.

Spring/Summer 2023
The Learning and
Research Hub
In the last nine months The Education Department at Oakhaven Hospice
has experienced major changes in its management and development.
In August 2022, Sadie Cox was appointed
at Oakhaven as the Lead for Education and
Research, a registered nurse with extensive
experience in adult learning both within the
NHS and Higher Education.
Sadie and her team launched changes to
the department by aligning the adult learning
activities with research, and renamed the
department ‘The Learning and Research Hub’.
in October 2022. This event was marked by an
open afternoon sharing examples of learning
and research activities across the organisation
and was attended by staff from Pennington
Chase, IPU, Day Hospital and the Coates Centre.
During 2022 over 700 people involved in
the care of individuals requiring palliative and
end of life care attended learning events at
Oakhaven Hospice. Many of these individuals
are Registered Nurses and Allied Health
Care Professionals who work in many of the
residential and nursing home settings across
the New Forest community. Learning events at
Oakhaven include specialist knowledge about
Pain Management, Palliative and End of Life
Care including specialist skills using syringe
drivers and other clinical equipment to support
patient care at the end of life.
These learning events are delivered through

lectures, discussions, interactive workshops and
are led by the Specialist Team which includes
our Medical Consultants and the Clinical Nurse
Specialists (CNS) in their role as an Educator.
A CNS advise, coordinate and direct nursing
service in palliative and end of life care on
behalf of Oakhaven Hospice, working alongside
and with community practices across The New
Forest, Totton, and Waterside area.
New developments
In 2023, to support in the professional
development of the Educators and their own
learning needs, the Lead for the Learning and
Research Hub developed a module specific
for Oakhaven Hospice, which focuses on
adult learning and teaching strategies, which
embraces Palliative and End of Life Care.
Over 12 members of staff have enrolled
on the first Learn2Teach programme across
the organisation, which has provided the
opportunity for staff to network and learn
together. This interprofessional learning
programme aims to support and develop
not only the Clinical Educators but also staff
who are the Moving and Handling Trainers,
Physiotherapy, Counsellors, Nursing staff and
anyone involved in teaching/training across
the organisation. Comments from the delegates
attending have embraced the opportunity
to network with their colleagues across the
organisation sharing learning and teaching tips
with each other.
In more recent months the Learning and
Research Hub team have aligned the Palliative
and End of Life Learning to the Learning
Outcome Framework set out by Health
Education England. This learning outcome
framework gives curriculum guidance on
the appropriateness of the level of learning
dependent on the health professionals role and
experience.
This has allowed the development of two
modules one specific to Health Care Assistants
known as the Core Care in Palliative and
End of Life and for Registered Nurses, the
Fundamental Skills in Palliative and End of Life
Care. These two modules provide an interactive
programme of adult learning with each module
running three times a year with a commitment
to 3-4 days of learning spread over 3-4 months.
Successful achievement is measured by a
short assessment at the end of the module
and must include full attendance. Oakhaven
Hospice provide a certificate of achievement
once all the outcomes are met. The most recent
learning event for Health Care Assistants had
23 delegates attending Oakhaven and this event
was very highly evaluated.
Research and collaboration
Our research activity at Oakhaven is in a phase
of development where curiosities are noted
through quality and audit activity. There are
potential opportunities for Oakhaven to work
collaboratively with local partners on joint
research activities and Oakhaven Hospice are
grateful for the continued research volunteer
support and guidance the organisation receives
from the University of Southampton.
For the future, Oakhaven Hospice and the
Learning and Research Hub aims to expand
the delivery of learning into the community
working closely with the Community Registered
Nurses (CRN) providing structured situational
learning. With the engagement of digital
learning tools, it is also intended to develop
blended learning programmes which will
include online learning activity giving the
healthcare community in the New Forest the
opportunity to greater choice of learning and
to make decisions when and where they study
Palliative and End of Life Care including the
ongoing support from the specialist team at
Oakhaven Hospice.

Oakhaven Single Point of

service provides one single

for Palliative and
End of Life Care
SPA consists of a trained call-handler who
answers calls and a Community Registered
Nurse (CRN) who supports the callhandler,
triages and returns call. The service
is currently offered between 08.30 and 16.30,
7-days a week and is for all patients, families,
and health and social care professionals within
the New Forest, Totton, and Waterside areas.
Since June 2022, the SPA service has handled
almost 14,000 telephone calls, approximately
5,000 involving patients directly, the rest
involving GPs and their surgeries, Care Homes,
District Nurses, Community Therapy Teams,
Hospital staff and patient and family members
who were not previously known to Oakhaven
Hospice. The team have even taken calls from
individuals out of area asking about how
hospice services work.

matters
SPA is here to help and support those who
are impacted by life-limiting illness at all
different stages of their palliative and end-oflife
journey.
As well as helping individuals and families
over the phone, the nurses work closely with
local GPs and community services to help
individuals get timely support and help at
end-of-life. This includes co-ordinating with
District Nurses and Community Therapy Teams
and arranging home visits when appropriate.
For example, in the space of 3 hours a crossagency
plan was formulated working with
the ambulance service and other community
services to help a patient who was stuck on
a sofa.
For those not at the end of their life, SPA
sign-posts individuals to the Oakhaven
Wellbeing Centre for a variety of services
including bereavement support, social support
groups, and complementary therapy. They
also sign-post to care navigators at local GP
surgeries for support with personal care or
local support services.
SPA is still a work in progress and like any
1-year-old there is room for growth. However,

Spring/Summer 2023
Do it for
Oaktober
This October do something different to make a difference
This year we have decided to dedicate
a whole month to Oakhaven. Walk it,
teach it, wear it, drink it or donate it,
there are so many ways you can ‘do it’ for
Oaktober. We want the whole community,
schools, and businesses to get involved and get
fundraising. What will you do?
Can you run, cycle or swim a mile a day?
Host a cocktail evening or cookery class? Can
you give up coffee, chocolate or crisps? No
challenge is too big or small to have fun and get
fundraising this October.
Get involved in our ‘Wear it Green Day’ on
the 20th October 2023. You could simply wear
green eyeshadow, don your favourite green
socks or be flamboyant in a green feather boa!
Just wear green and donate what you can. If
you can’t make this date, pick another, and
let us know. Local business? Why not get your
colleagues involved in your own tea/coffee
morning on ‘Wear it Green Day’. There is so
much value in a good cuppa!
And if you can handle this, maybe you’ll be
ready to take on the ultimate challenge ‘The
Fire and Ice Walk’ and the flaming finale to
Oaktober! Join us in the hospice gardens on
Wednesday 25th October where the bravest
‘soles’ will walk over broken glass and hot coals
in the twilight. Friends and family are welcome
along to offer encouragement and celebrate
their achievements. You have to be 11 years old
to take part, but any brave ‘soles’ over the age
of 5 years can take on the Lego Walk.

Gifts in Wills make a real difference to our
patients, in fact we care for 1 in 4 of our
patients thanks to the generosity of gifts
in wills
If your circumstances have recently changed, it is
important to update your will. A charitable gift can
not only make a lasting difference but can help
offset inheritance tax.
This September we are working with local solicitors
to offer a simple will for a donation to Oakhaven of
£100 or a mirror will for £200.

The event will cater to all
tastes and include a variety

‘Thank you Oakhaven staff
and volunteers, you are simply
the best’
Give a gift that lasts
a lifetime
For Mark, who is a regular day hospice
attendee, Oakhaven Hospice has been a real
haven to him, ‘It’s never a dull place and all
the staff and volunteers are truly dedicated and
professional, they also genuinely care about
you. Without the ongoing support of Oakhaven,
life for me would be very dull indeed. I am
lucky to have them as part of my life and I am
eternally grateful for everything they’ve done
for me.’
We are able to care for one in four people
like Mark thanks to gifts left in Wills.
•
Leaving a lasting legacy to Oakhaven in this
way ensures we will be able to continue caring
for those in our community when they need us
most, helping us to make every moment matter.
Could you help us with
a gift in your Will?
A pledge of any size really will make a
difference to our future.

A Safe Haven
a jigsaw puzzle for Oakhaven
We are delighted to present an exclusive and limited edition
1000-piece Oakhaven jigsaw puzzle by Anne Gooch
A self-taught amateur artist,
Anne loves watercolours and
painting outdoors, and has been
a volunteer at Oakhaven for nine
years. As a retired community
palliative care sister she
understands more than most the
therapeutic value of creative arts
in end of life care, often providing
a language that words cannot
express.
Volunteering with the Acorn
Project, Anne shares her
enthusiasm, encouragement
and skills with day hospice
patients and school children of
all ages and abilities, creating
wonderful large and small scale
collaborative art together.
‘A Safe Haven’ started life as a
preparatory inspiration piece for
The Acorn Project, but over time
Anne developed it into a delicate
study of the hospice. Now Anne
has very kindly donated this
beautiful watercolour painting to
be turned into a unique limited
edition jigsaw puzzle with all
profits donated to the hospice.
‘A Safe Haven’ is a stunning
representation of the hospice
in winter, perfectly capturing
the peace and tranquility of
the gardens. The gardens are
a place to be still and reflect
through difficult times, a haven
to be enjoyed by patients,
families, staff and volunteers
all year round. Included in the
foreground of the painting,
seated on the bench are Phoebe
and John Coates the founders
of the hospice, reflecting on the
unique legacy their family home
has provided for patients in the
New Forest area.
Priced at £20 this jigsaw will
make a perfect Christmas
present. It is available
to pre-order now via the
Fundraising department
on 01590 677773 and will
be available to buy via the
website from September
2023. Don’t miss out!

In November we held our very
first Oakhaven 10. It was a
triumph with over 200 runners
signing up for the 10 mile trail
run held in the New Forest near

the day and runners came from
far and wide.

This could not have happened
without all the kind donations we
received and our volunteers who
helped plan, set up and run the

It was a wonderful festive
weekend, which raised an
impressive amount for the
hospice.
With lots of ideas in the

for this year’s Fayre.

Our annual Santa Dash was a
roaring success with over 800
Santa’s and festive friends
running through the streets of
Lymington. It was a particularly
cold day but that didn’t dampen
the spirits of the participants who
walked, scooted, jogged, and ran
our 3km course.
Thank you so much to our
sponsors John D Woods and
all those that volunteered,
marshalled, and generally
supported this event. We could
not do it without you. Also, a
HUGE thank you to all those that
participated and raised additional
sponsorship funds. We hope you
had fun!

Direct ways to help us
Give a small regular amount
with Oakhaven Giving
As little as £3 a month over time will
make a difference: the more people
sign up, the more quickly it will do so!

Play the Oakhaven Lottery
Give a small amount, with the bonus of a
weekly chance to win a prize. Play from
just £1 a week and you could win cash

Leave a gift in your Will
Every gift left in a Will to Oakhaven
makes a difference, regardless of size. A

in some situations, eliminate the amount
of inheritance tax your beneficiaries may
have to pay.

Make a donation
If you cannot commit to regular giving but
can afford to make a one off donation, that
will of course be very much appreciated.
The easiest way to do this is online,
where you can also download a Gift Aid
declaration form and find information
about how to donate by post or shop.

Thank you
It is really important that we can continue to deliver
all of our services free of charge to our patients and
their loved ones now and in the future.
How your donations help
£40 is the cost of an hour of compassionate care on
our Inpatient Unit.
£68 is the cost of a counselling session and gives
those coping with a diagnosis or following the death
of a loved one the opportunity to work through their
emotions with one of our counsellors.
£120 is the cost for a patient to attend our day
hospice; patients enjoy a social day, shared laughter
and a delicious lunch – and can relax for a while.
£215 is the cost of a home visit, it brings one of
our community teams to a patient’s home to support
the patient and allow them to remain at home and
independent for as long as possible.
All donations, whether one-off or regular and however
big or small, help to ensure that Oakhaven will be
providing compassionate care and helping to make
end-of-life as pain free and manageable as possible,
for generations to come.
