SPICY AUSSIES
TOO MUCH FOR
SOME KIWIS
• By Tara Shaskey
TWO Australian sports
stars dancing in their undies
provoked more complaints
from TV viewers than any
other.
The commercial ad
complained about the most
to the Advertising Standards
Authority was a Tradie
workwear campaign featuring
Australian freestyle skier
Danielle Scott dancing in front
of rugby union player Nick
‘Honey Badger’ Cummins.
The eight complainants
said the ad was offensive,
objectified women and was
not appropriate for children.
But the Advertising Standards
Authority complaints board
dismissed their gripes, ruling
the scene showing Cummins
using a leaf blower while he
and Scott were dressed in their
underwear did not reach the
threshold to cause serious
offence.
Cruise
ship
buses
impact
on rates
RATEPAYERS are bearing the
financial burden of transporting
cruise ship passengers from
Lyttelton into the central city.
It has led Environment
Canterbury, which operates the
city’s public bus services, to warn
it is likely to cost ratepayers a
minimum of $500,000 more next
cruise ship season with passenger
numbers increasing by 30 per
cent.
The warning comes as the city
council grapples with its planned
general rates rise of 7.88 per
cent, up from the 5.68 per cent
projected in March. It is hoped
cost cutting will get the increase
down to just over 6 per cent when
the rates are set later this month.
Cruise ship passengers
swamped public buses in Lyttelton
and on the return trip from the
central city during the summer,
angering other bus users who
couldn’t get seats.
ECan reacted to the outcry by
putting on more buses to meet the
demand at a time when there were
driver shortages.
Seventy-nine cruise ships
berthed at Lyttelton during the
season, including the massive
Ovation of the Seas.
The most complained-about
non-commercial ad was Te
Whatu Ora/Health New
Zealand’s Vaccinate for Life
print campaign which got 29
complaints.
Complainants told the
authority the statement “Protect
them for life. Immunise” in
the context of advertising
for the Covid-19 vaccine was
misleading.
The complaints board upheld
the objections and ordered the ad
to be removed or not used again
in its then-current form.
The board found it implied
a child would have life-long
protection from Covid if
vaccinated, which was not true.
The health agency’s National
Immunisation Programme went
on to apologise for any confusion
or concern the ad may have
caused.
Other non-commercial ads
to gain the most upset from
audiences were the Voices
for Freedom pamphlets
discouraging mask use and
Te Whatu Ora/Health New
Zealand’s “Stick it to Hep C”
campaign which featured a
middle finger gesture.
The board upheld the 20
complaints regarding the Voices
for Freedom pamphlets but
the 18 objections to the Stick it
to Hep C promotion were not
upheld on appeal.
The ads that garnered
the most grumblings were
revealed in the Advertising
Standards Authority’s 2022
annual report.
It showed the authority dealt
with 843 complaints about 345
advertisements, a decline from
previous years.
In 2021 there were 1245
complaints, concerning 570 ads,
Mt Hutt set to open after cold snap
MT HUTT is set to open
tomorrow after last weekend’s
snowfall, which has ski field
operators in the South Island
excited about the season ahead.
The snow has also sparked a
warning to adventurers heading
into the backcountry that
the risk of larger avalanches is
expected to be higher this year.
Twenty centimetres of snow
fell on Mt Hutt, Coronet Peak
and the Remarkables over the
long weekend.
NZSki chief executive Paul
Anderson said they managed
24 to 48 hours of snow making
on top of that so the trails were
building up nicely.
He was excited for the season
ahead.
“Even last year, we actually
eclipsed pre-pandemic levels.
Last year was a really busy
year for the Southern Lakes
mountains so the four mountains
down here, including
our friends over in Wānaka,
eclipsed a million skier visits for
the very first time, and I think it
will be like that again this year.”
Applications for seasonal
roles were back at pre-pandemic
levels following the return of
working holiday visa holders
and skilled workers.
The main challenge has been
finding enough accommodation
for them in Methven and
Queenstown.
While skiers and snowboarders
were expected to hit the resorts
in their droves this season,
others will be looking to explore
the backcountry.
Mountain Safety Council chief
executive Mike Daisley said a lot
of people access the backcountry
Covid, hep C ads feature
STICK IT: The middle-finger gesture used in Te Whatu Ora’s
hepatitis C public health campaign.
and in 2020, 1151 complaints
were lodged about 591 ads.
Last year 143 of the ads were
deemed to have a case to answer
and 102 were either changed or
removed.
Advertising Standards
Authority chief executive Hilary
Souter was delighted with the
voluntary compliance rate of
96 per cent with respect to the
authority’s upheld decisions.
Of the small number that did
through the ski fields.
He urged people heading into
the backcountry to check the
avalanche advisory forecast, go
with someone experienced if
they were new, have the right
equipment and know how to
use it.
The council was preparing
for a more extreme avalanche
season than usual with much
of last month’s snow sticking
around.
Other ski fields in the South
Island are expected to open
later this month. – RNZ
not comply, she said those were
generally cases of advertisercontrolled
distribution, such as
pamphlet drops.
“From time to time, it’s hard
for us to get confirmation
from those companies or
organisations that the ads have
been removed and we can’t prove
that they’re not
going to do it
again,” Souter
said.
She said the
reason for
last year’s
reduced
number of
complaints was
Hilary
the pandemic
Souter
and the general
election prompting a higher
volume in preceding years.
Advocacy advertisements
– non-commercial ads from
consumer groups, Government
or political parties, and those
promoting public health or safety
messages – were most commonly
complained about and made up
29 per cent of cases.
Seven complaints about the
“inappropriate” placement of an
ad featuring the horror movie
The Black Phone was the second
most complained about in the
commercial category and was
upheld by the board.
Principals support vaping crackdown
while youth say ‘it’s all around us’
• By Anna Sargent
SCHOOL PRINCIPALS are
backing the Government’s
crackdown on youth vaping, but
say more needs to be done to
combat what they are calling a
crisis.
From August, all vapes sold
will need removable or replaceable
batteries – effectively banning
disposable vapes.
New vape shops cannot be set
up within 300 metres of schools
or marae.
The Government is also
outlawing flavour names such as
“strawberry jelly donut” to make
them less attractive to children.
Minister of Health Ayesha
Verrall said too many teenagers
were vaping and the restrictions
would have a big impact on the
number taking up the habit.
But young people spoken to in
the central city were not so sure.
“I think young people will still
be able to get them even with all
of those measures . . . vapes are at
every dairy on every corner and
you can order them online, it’s
all around us,” one teenager said.
“I think teenagers will still
find a way to get it, because it’s
teenagers and they always do,
PHOTO:
GETTY
but hopefully they can stop little
kids from getting hold of them,”
another said.
The latest figures show youth
vaping is increasing.
A recent survey by ASH New
Zealand found daily vaping
among 13- to 14-year-olds had
shot up by 209 per cent.
Ministry of Health statistics
showed the number of 15- to
17-year-olds who vaped every
day had quadrupled in three
years, from two per cent in 2018-
19 to eight per cent in 2021-22.
Principals Federation president
Leanne Otene said it was not
just a problem for high schools –
intermediates across the country,
including hers, were dealing with
it every day and teachers were
feeling powerless.
“It’s definitely hard to police
because it doesn’t leave an odour,
it can be done in corners and
it’s not something like smoking
where it was easily detectable.
“There was some discussion
about putting vaping detectors
in schools but that’s just not possible,
it’s just too expensive to do
that.”
Otene said anything to make
vaping less attractive to kids was
a positive step.
“The mere fact that vaping
comes in bubblegum and fruit
flavours begs the question of
who is this marketed to. The
announcement . . . about flavour
names is a real indication that
the Government realises vaping
is directed at our young people
in terms of its sale and purchase.
“Vaping was originally a way
to help people give up smoking,
no one considered that our
young people would take it up
with such voracity,” she said.
Otene said vaping was particularly
a problem for Māori youth.
“Statistics show a high percentage
of Māori boys, 28 per
cent are vaping, and our Māori
girls are at 39 per cent, so it is a
problem for Māori. If we can get
it away from our marae, all the
better.”
Verrall said the restrictions
struck a balance between
preventing young people from
starting to vape, while still
helping adults to quit smoking
cigarettes.
NEWS 7
• By Tony Simons
A PROPERTY developer, who
was banned from directing or
managing companies for fourand-a
half-years, is associated with
a new subdivision in Redcliffs.
Timothy Robert Archibald, who
has previously been bankrupt,
may soon be involved with the
new 19-section
subdivision at
McCormacks Bay
near the bottom
of Glenstrae Rd.
In 2018
Archibald was
banned by the
Timothy
Archibald
NZ Companies
Office for acting
recklessly with
respect to the
management of three failed
companies, which had bought
property in Lyttelton, owing
creditors hundreds of thousands
of dollars.
The ban ended in April but
not before an Archibald family
company, Gaba Holdings Ltd,
with his wife Belinda and son Guy
as sole directors, sought approval
to build the subdivision.
The resource consent
application is dated September
2021 and the company contact/
trustee named on the application
is Tim Archibald.
Belinda said her husband’s
Businessman back after ban
PROJECT: The location of the planned Gaba Holdings
Ltd subdivision looking towards Glenstrae Rd, with
McCormacks Bay in the distance.
name and phone number were
put on the consent application
by mistake by a resource
management consultant acting for
the company.
When banning Archibald,
deputy registrar of companies
Peter Barker said at the time
“[he] gave no consideration to the
interests of the companies or their
creditors and did not understand
the nature of transactions
between related companies [and]
the mismanagement was at a basic
and fundamental level. I consider
Mr Archibald poses a serious risk
to the public”.
Since the ban was imposed
Archibald has continued to
promote himself on his Facebook
page, Tim Archibald Property
Developer, posting tips on real
estate and property investment.
Archibald told The Star the
Gaba Holdings Ltd subdivision
would be built on family land and
a consent was in process. He said
all the sections will be residential
sites.
Asked if he was looking after
the project for the company, he
said: “Yes, I will be, once we see
what the council approves and
where we go with it, but I am not a
director with the company, just a
family member.”
When asked about his ban
he said: “Really I don’t want to
go down this track or make any
comment. This is a bit of an unfair
phone call really.”
He then passed the phone to
Belinda. She said her husband has
not been involved with running
Gaba Holdings Ltd in any way.
Said Belinda: “Tim has nothing
to do with running or managing
the company but has just been
helping the family out.”
When approached, the resource
management consultant told The
Star: “It seems one of us has made
a mistake (of putting Archibald on
the application) because all the old
plans and correspondence have
got Gaba Holdings on them, but
I don’t know that I made it. My
instructions have all come from
Bindi [Belinda].”
The consultant said he told the
company which prepared and
signed the consent application
that Archibald represented Gaba
Holdings Ltd when “it should
have been Bindi”.
“I co-ordinated the consultants
to do the consent, but I didn’t
prepare it,” he said.
The principal surveyor for the
consultant company confirmed
to The Star it had prepared and
signed the consent application.
“In regard to that subdivision,
we can’t discuss clients as that
is not something we can do
if we want to keep clients,” he
said.
A city council spokesperson
said the consent application is on
hold pending further information
on geotechnical matters and
whether or not notification
is required. An initial report
by TerraForma Geotechnical
identified multiple hazards on
the Glenstrae Rd site, including
erosion, rockfall and instability.
However, it said design measures
could be put in place to mitigate
the risks involved.
Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment
manager, integrity and
enforcement, Vanessa
Cook, confirmed the ban on
Archibald prevented him from
being a company director or
participating in the management
of any company. It was imposed
because he was involved in the
management of two or more
companies that failed within a
five-year period and he managed
those companies in a manner that
made him responsible for their
failure.
Said Cook: “Should there
be any information regarding
Mr Archibald breaching the
provisions of his prohibition,
complaints can be lodged with
MBIE’s integrity and enforcement
team via the Companies Office
website.
“The integrity and enforcement
team does not comment on
ongoing assessments.”
A company search shows
Archibald has been a director
of 41 companies since 1983. The
records show he was removed as a
director from all of them.
Rangiora homicide: Murder accused
appears in court, name kept secret
• By Sam Sherwood
A MAN accused of murdering
Richard Leman, whose body was
found inside a parked car, has
appeared in court and will keep
his identity secret for now.
Leman’s body was found inside
his own car, parked in a garage
in Tyler St, Rangiora, on April
17. Police then began a homicide
inquiry.
On Saturday morning police
raided a property on Oxford
Rd, Rangiora, and arrested a
46-year-old man. The man has
since been charged with murdering
Leman.
On Monday, the man appeared
in the district court before Judge
Stephen O’Driscoll.
Through his counsel, Ethan
Huda, the man applied for
interim name suppression of
name and any particulars likely
to identify him, which was
granted. He was remanded in
custody until June 23 for his first
appearance in the High Court.
According to court documents
the man allegedly murdered Leman,
41, on April 11 in Rangiora.
Leman’s family earlier said Leman
was last seen at a shopping
centre in Rangiora at 8.20pm on
April 11.
INVESTIGATION: Police made door-to-door checks in Rangiora as part of the homicide
investigation into the death of Richard Leman (left). PHOTO: GEORGE HEARD/NZ HERALD
The man spoke twice in the
hearing, once to confirm he
could hear the judge, and then
gave the judge his full name.
Leman’s sister, Nicky Leman,
told the NZ Herald after the
man’s arrest that the last seven
weeks since her brother first
went missing had been “total
fear”.
“I haven’t been sleeping, I’ve
been getting up throughout the
night checking my windows and
doors and making sure all my
children are in bed safe it’s like
I have not been sleeping. We’re
all like that, we’re all a mess, all
of us.
“We had no idea what was
going on because the police
don’t tell you anything because
they’ve got an investigation to
do and then you don’t want to
know because you don’t want to
jeopardise anything, so it’s been
a catch-22 situation, we want to
know but then we don’t because
we don’t want to compromise
anything. If we talk to the wrong
person we don’t want anything
compromised because we want
justice for Richard.
“It’s such a hard thing . . . that
is why today was a relief, first
thing this morning it was a relief
to get told they’d made an arrest.”
Leman was a beloved brother,
son, and father to three boys “his
babies”, Nicky Leman said.
“He was a funny guy, he made
us laugh when we were down, he
put a smile on our face. That was
just Richard.”
She said the family had “no
clue” as to why someone would
want to harm Leman.
“Richard was friends with
everybody, that was how he was.
If you were down, you could’ve
been a complete stranger and if
you were on the side of the road
and if you were upset or crying
or whatever, he would stop
and say ‘Are you alright?’ and
give you a hug and say ‘is there
anything I can do to help you’.
That’s the kind of guy he was.
“Everyone was Richard’s
friend, it was like he had an
infectious personality where
you just wanted to be around
him.”
Nicky Leman said her parents
were “not coping at all”. The
couple had also lost their oldest
child to leukemia, she said.
“I can’t come to terms with it,
this is my little brother . . . every
time I think about it I start to
cry.”
She said the police had done an
“amazing job” throughout their
investigation.
“I think the police are
amazing. They’ve been brilliant
with my parents, because my
parents are elderly and they’re
very unwell, and just the way
they’ve handled everything, I
can’t speak highly enough of
them.”
AN UNUSUAL selection of rare,
Ship Nails and Tail Feathers is a
collaborative exhibition showcasing
of Christchurch Art Gallery and
Said art gallery
Canterbury
Proposals sought for
Performing Arts Precinct
OPPORTUNITY: The city council is seeking proposals to
develop a Gloucester St site that will form part of the
Performing Arts Precinct.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
THOSE WHO want to be
part of the city’s Performing
Arts Precinct now have the
opportunity to secure a
prominent site in the heart of the
development.
The city council is requesting
proposals from organisations
which can develop a 2081sq m
section of land at 129 Gloucester
St.
Said city council head of city
growth and property Bruce
Rendall: “If you’ve got an exciting
operation that will help
make Christchurch the leading
performing arts centre in the
country, this block of land offers
the perfect home for it.”
“The passion is out there – and
this process will help us find the
ideal candidate to take this piece
of land and make it their own.”
The precinct is bringing
together a variety of venues to
support a wide range of performing
arts.
Alongside The Court Theatre,
which is currently under construction
for a 2024 opening,
the Performing Arts Precinct
contains the Isaac Theatre Royal
and The Piano: Centre for Music
and the Arts.
The city council is also working
with the Christchurch School
of Music on a proposal for the
land located beside the Crowne
Plaza Hotel on Armagh St.
“The site we have available
fronts onto Gloucester St, as well
as the western lane beside The
Court Theatre and the central
courtyard to the north, so is wellsuited
to hosting an active and
attractive ground floor space,”
Rendall said.
The city council envisions
granting a long-term lease for
the land but will consider other
options on a case-by-case basis.
The land was acquired
by the Crown in 2020 and
transferred to the city council
for the designated purpose of the
precinct.
In 2022, councillors decided
against selling the land for a car
park and instead voted to retain
the land so that the city council
could explore other uses for it.
Chch-made game
an international hit
Folic acid to go
in bread flour
FOLIC ACID will be added to
bread-making flour from August,
to prevent devastating birth
defects that can result in death or
lifelong disability.
Fortifying bread and other
food staples with folic acid is safe
and has significantly reduced
birth defects of the brain, spine,
or spinal cord in other countries
including the United States,
Canada and Australia, says the
Ministry of Health.
“Consuming folic acid just
before conception and early on
during the pregnancy is vital to
protecting babies from the risk of
major birth defects such as spina
bifida, but as just over half of
pregnancies in New Zealand are
unplanned, many people will not
be taking folic acid supplements
during this critical time,” deputy
director of public health Dr Harriette
Carr said.
“Folate is naturally present in
many foods. Folic acid fortification
restores what is lost during
processing such as flour milling.
It is an internationally wellaccepted
and safe approach to
supporting the development of
babies during pregnancy.”
It is a breakthrough for New
Zealand’s medical and scientific
communities and patient
advocates, who were despondent
after plans to add folic acid to
bread in 2009 were upended by
industry opposition claiming
possible risks from “mass
medication”.
New Zealand’s Ministry
for Primary Industries in
2019 estimated that up to
171 pregnancies affected by a
neural tube defect could have
been prevented in the decade
after 2009, had mandatory
fortification of bread gone
ahead. More than half of such
pregnancies are terminated or
result in stillbirths.
CHRISTCHURCH game
developers Black Salt have been
blown away by the reception its
game Dredge has received, with
notable reviewers raving about
the game’s appeal.
PlayStation Universe called
it “a dreadfully enticing horror
experience”, scoring the game a
9/10. “Kept me hooked” wrote
the Guardian’s critic, while
Bloody Disgusting gave Dredge
5/5, proclaiming the game to be
“one of the most exciting indie
titles in years”.
Dredge now occupies the top
1 per cent of the market sold on
Steam, a highly popular platform
for gamers worldwide, with
over 120 million active users.
More than half a million people
have played the game in the
first month of its release.
“You know, we knew we had
a good game on our hands. We
just didn’t imagine it would go
as widely as it has,” said Black
Salt chief executive Nadia Thorn.
“It’s a very well polished product,
really well polished game
and well executed in what it’s
trying to be.”
Thorn said a lot of games were
released too early and failed
from game-breaking bugs,
frustrating gamers and stopping
them from getting fully involved
in the game.
“With Dredge, you’re really
able to immerse yourself into it
and it turns out that it caters for
a wide array of players,” she said.
Dredge began as an idea
by the development team’s
programmer, to make what are
often small side missions involving
fish, into a more compelling
story.
“It was always going to be
primarily a fishing game, and
that did remain a big theme
throughout development, but
it evolved into a much more
exploration and mystery focused
game,” said Dredge’s programmer
and writer Joel Mason.
Mason had never written for a
video game before.
He said while it was a big
challenge, he did enjoy giving
the story a creepy, eldritch
feeling, especially in his
descriptions of the strange sea
creatures inhabiting the world of
the game.
Ultimate playground to open
NINJA VALLEY - The Ultimate
Playground – is bringing its successful
brand of active family entertainment
to the Bush Inn Centre with a launch
planned for September 2023.
The 3500sqm space will
feature more than 30 different
physical activities
and challenges for all ages
from 2+ and will include 65
trampolines, ninja courses,
climbing walls and towers, a
4-section high ropes course,
dodgeball, a massive donut slide into airbag,
a 4-level playground for little ninjas,
a virtual reality component, café, parties
and a few other surprises.
Co-founder Grant Beuzeval is excited
about bringing Ninja Valley, a New Zealand
owned business, to Christchurch.
“We wanted to play a positive role in
this rapidly developing city. The vibe and
energy is very obvious in
Christchurch and we hope
to tap into it and expand
our community – the Ninja
Nation.
“After some deliberation,
we chose the Bush Inn
Centre based on the size and
shape available, the energy
and vision of the property management
team and the proximity to a wide range of
family-friendly food and beverage outlets.
“We feel like we can compliment our
neighbours at the Bush Inn.”
Readers react to last week’s
article about the controversial
Park Tce cycleway. Due to
space not all letters could be
published.
Please rip up that cycleway, would be
much better for the money involved to be
spent on the potholes in the roads. What a
waste of time and money and appalling the
way it was implemented. It is a nightmare
for motorists.
- Robyn and David Lee
We had been watching the above development
over the past months and none
of us could fathom what was happening.
We would never have guessed the disaster
that was completed; morning congestion
backed up past Carlton Mill, bus stop in
the middle of the road . . . more congestion,
confusing, muddled, unclear and
unsightly . . . so many bollards of different
colours, unnecessary speed bumps, it’s
30km, now nowhere for tourist buses. All
must be removed.
- Nicola Cuder
The cycleway looks great and functional
and still allows two way traffic; winner
for all. There is a climate crisis, which has
been officially declared. Time to ditch the
cars more often and try biking. It is fun,
safe and guilt-free. Plus it would have cost
a fortune to have the cycleway built. Don’t
waste taxpayers’ money. Put the funds into
the east or community-focused initiatives.
- Stephen Field
I am surprised this cycleway needed to
be installed. Surely there is enough space
on the shared path that follows the river
from Carlton Corner to Rolleston Ave. I
use this path and roadway (Park Tce) at
least three times a week.
- Rosalie Gunn
I love the new cycleway on Rolleston
Ave. In my opinion, it is the best one
in Christchurch because it is not over
engineered and the whole space of
the cycleway goes to cyclists and not
unnecessary kerbing. It is perfectly safe
as well. I wish they were all done like
this one. Other cycleways are too narrow
because of the kerbing to pass other
cyclists safely, which is really annoying
considering how much space they take
up. I really think they got this ‘temporary’
cycleway right.
- Sharon Williams
My partner and I have found the new
cycle path on Park Tce to be so user
friendly and safe without all the concrete
kerbing that is usually used. We use it daily
on our bike rides if the weather permits.
We always take the same route around the
park and then along Park Tce and have
had many near mishaps as walkers and
dogs are usually all over the place on the
old shared pathway. Hopefully, the new
cycleway will stay as it is. So many cyclists
are using it from what I’ve seen since it’s
been in place.
Yet ‘more anti-car road design’ or
• From page 14
I agree that the cycleway in
Park Tce should be removed.
The anti-car road design people
at the city council have already
managed to ‘stuff up’ half
the roads in Christchurch. A
prime example is Craven Rd
in Upper Riccarton, where the
installation of an unnecessarily
wide cycleway has made the
roadway so narrow that two cars
can barely get past each other
without scraping the paint off
their sides - with not a cyclist in
sight.
- Ivan Hansen
I am disappointed to hear
that the Mayor and several
councillors requested a vote
to remove the new Park Tce
cycleway. Despite numerous
claims of “we are not against
cycleways, but . . .” when the
council rolls out quick, lowcost
cycling infrastructure,
they continue to whinge. This
cycleway provides safer travel
to school and work for many,
gives pedestrians back their
footpath and will help reduce
Christchurch’s emissions from
vehicle exhausts.
- Peter Galbraith
As a frequent user of the
shared cycleway/pedestrian
path in front of the botanical
gardens leading onto Park Tce, I
applauded the new cycleway as
it instantly stopped the unsafe
situation in this busy area. For
a few councillors who want the
new system torn up out of petty
politics and points scoring is
really quite outrageous. They will
no doubt cite the cost of the new
cycleway, conveniently forgetting
the tens of thousands they want
to spend ripping it up without
looking at how much better the
area is now.
- Lindsay James
I am certainly against
this ridiculous cycleway along
Park Tce. There shouldn’t be
any more cycleways anywhere
around this city and certainly
not without council consultation.
It is time someone stood up
to the bureaucrats in the city
council and realised that the
peoples’ elected council members
are those who should always be
consulted for decisions about
any money spent, not some office
person.
- Mel Rose
The Park Tce cycleway should
have never been put down – it
needs to go. There are more
important things ratepayers’
money needs to be spent on. We
don’t need any more cycleways.
Fix the city and surrounding
suburbs up first before wasting
money on cycleways.
- Graeme Clyde
As a regular cycle commuter,
this trial is great as the current
situation with an overloaded
shared path was becoming
unsafe. With the uptake of
e-bikes it is no longer safe on
very popular cycling links to mix
with pedestrians. This cycleway
solves this in a really simple and
low-cost manner.
- Richard Hayman
I am an aged 80 e-bike cyclist,
so I have a vested interest in
the development of safe cycling
facilities around the city. However,
I think there is no need for
the Park Tce cycleway, as there
is a cycleway parallel through
Hagley Park and a footpath
right beside the road that could
easily be designated a footpath/
cycleway with the addition of a
few cycling/walking symbols.
- Kathleen Anderson
The new cycleway along
Rolleston Ave and Park Tce
is great and should absolutely
remain in place. As an e-scooter
user, a walker and driver in the
area, I am happy with the changes
from each and all of these perspectives.
I’m disappointed that
it is being politicised by certain
councillors when there is a clear
benefit for our local community.
I for one was aware of the project
being promoted in March prior
to it being installed, and I feel
there is very little excuse for our
elected leaders to plead ignorance
here.
- Andrew Douglas-Clifford
As a cyclist who uses
the cycleway every day for
commuting, I’d like to let you
know I absolutely love using
the cycleway on Park Tce and
Rolleston Ave.
Skip the Chemicals: Judy Bailey’s Favourite Joint Cream ADVERTISEMENT
KORU NUTRITION
Entering her seventh decade,
TV icon Judy Bailey is still as
active as ever.
Judy loves walking the
dog, playing with her
grandchildren, and tramping
in the Coromandel.
When she heard about a
natural New Zealand joint
cream, her curiosity was
piqued but her journalistic
instinct also instilled a sense
of skepticism.
“We were traveling to the
Coromandel and my foot was
giving me its usual trouble…
and I thought, oh, I’ve got
some Koru FX Pro in my bag.”
Fortunately for Judy, it didn’t
take long to feel the difference,
“I rubbed it in and noticed it
almost instantaneously!”
“And what was even more
impressive was that the effect
seemed to be really longlasting.
I didn’t have to apply
it again that day.”
Koru FX Pro is a blend full
of natural essential oils and
native ingredients like manuka
oil, eucalyptus, and extracts of
arnica.
Being a journalist, Judy is
naturally cautious when it
comes to new products: “I’m
always a bit skeptical about
these things… I thought, ‘Oh,
yes, another cream…’”
In order to gain a deeper
understanding of Koru FX
Pro, Judy was invited to Koru
Nutrition’s facility to witness
the production process. She
expressed her astonishment,
saying, “I was surprised by
how much of these top-quality
essential oils go into these
products. I was expecting a
few drops, but that’s why it
works – because it’s full of
really top-quality oils.”
“I do think Koru FX Pro is
a great product but don’t take
my word for it… I recommend
you try it for yourself to see if
it’s right for you.”
Benefits of Koru FX Pro:
Having its fast-acting
and long-lasting effects
documented over a long a
period of time, it comes as no
surprise that Koru FX is New
safe, efficient and future friendly?
As someone who drives Park
Tce and Rolleston Ave every day,
I could not be more impressed
with the new road layout and
the efficiency with which it was
completed. The new layout saves
cyclists having to come on to
the road during commute times
when the pathway is also very
busy with pedestrians. This allows
people commuting to and
from work and school, such as
myself, to have a safe combination
of all means of transportation.
- Anna Rumbold
The Park Terrace and Rolleston
Ave cycleway should absolutely
stay. It provides a great, safe route
for the many cyclists who ride
through the area. The options
before were to ride on the narrow
footpath/shared path and get in
the way of the large numbers of
pedestrians, or ride on the road
and risk being close passed by vehicles
because there wasn’t even a
painted cycle lane there before.
- Jono Dewit
I’m a regular driver and cyclist
around Christchurch and I fully
support the cycleway on Park
Tce. Cycle infrastructure like
this makes getting around much
easier and safer for cyclists and
as a result reduces the number
of cars on the roads, making it
easier for drivers to get around
too. Win-win.
- Michael Plank
I am disappointed to see the
behaviour of some councillors; in
my view, it was easy to see what
the plans were before it was built
– if they had bothered to read
their daily briefing. This cycleway
is great – cheap, quick and effective.
The shared path was never
fit for purpose, too narrow for the
centre city, nor was Park Tce, way
too wide for the inner city with
little traffic to use it. There have
very clearly been no issues with
traffic as a result. This cycleway
is great and I hope we see more
like it.
- Jack Halliday
It’s imperative that the Park
Tce cycleway stay and become
permanent. This is a dangerous
part of town for cyclists
and pedestrians, who must be
prioritised in road safety because
they are vulnerable. Christchurch
needs to move on from private
vehicle transport. It is appalling
that some city councillors
are looking to undermine due
process, led by a mayor who is
backward thinking.
- Beatrice Cheer
Yet another council over-engineered
expensive exercise that
has provided no more cycling
access than before, just cluttered
up Park Tce. I wonder when the
cycling zealots in the city council
will wake up to the reality that
the over engineering of approved
cycleways is not necessary and is
a waste of ratepayers taxes.
- John Cumberpatch
It’s absolutely disgraceful
that Mauger and his councillor
friends want to tear up a perfectly
good cycleway. They have plenty
of cheek to complain about ‘due
process’ being the reason to
remove it, while also failing to
follow due process by notifying
the community board of the
survey. Separate lanes for cycling
so that bikes and cars can share a
road safely are good for everyone.
We have to reduce emissions urgently,
and increasing cycling is
an easy, healthy, and positive way
to do this. Use some common
sense, Mauger.
- Aurora Garner-Randolph
They should keep the cycleway.
The shared path is used too frequently
by walking pedestrians
for it to be viable for cyclists
to use. The number of cyclists
using that route has outgrown
the shared path. A new one adds
capacity. Makes sense.
- Ben Rainey
I think the cycleway on Park
Tce is a waste of space. The
orange barriers along the road
have been banged over and there
is less space for cars to turn onto
the road on Park Tce. It’s also
more dangerous for cyclists as it’s
not clear what lines mean what
for the buses and cyclists.
- Kristal Jenkinson
The cycleway should be removed.
Kilmore St to Park Tce is a major
thoroughfare during peak hours
and needs two lanes each way.
There are already two cycleways
beside the new one. Council staff
Save our roads! We are not all
able to cycle everywhere we need
to go, or have the luxury of time
needed to take the bus. To restore
Park Tce to its two lanes will not
disadvantage cyclists as there
are two shared paths parallel to
the road. One is right next to
the road and the other is in the
park next to the river. However,
removing one lane for cars has
greatly disadvantaged motorists
and all industry/business that
relies on transport. Do we want a
vibrant city centre for all, or one
that is only for those able to cycle
or take the bus at all times and
weather?
‘Mindset’ behind surprise wins
Premier netball closed
out the first round with
some dominant results
on Tuesday, while
rugby, rugby league
and hockey are back
after a break over King’s
Birthday weekend.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
NETBALL
Rising to the challenge of premier
netball this season, Lincoln
University B have capped off
a successful first round with a
dominant 60-34 win over Hearts
St Peters A to secure second spot.
The team were promoted to
premier 1 after winning premier
2 last year, and have surprised
many with their five wins in the
first round.
The win has Lincoln B second
on 21 points, behind defending
champions Lincoln University A.
Head coach Ronelle van Dongen
said the success of her team is
largely due to their determination.
“The girls are just so willing to
learn and improve each week,”
she said.
“We know the competition is
going to get tougher and tougher,
but we have set up a good mindset
and had a really good start.”
Half of Lincoln B have either
played or sat on the bench for
the club’s A team, which boasts
Tactix player Kate Lloyd.
“We’ve had some combined
trainings which have been a
great experience for our girls,”
said van Dongen, who is a former
Mainland coach.
Goal shoot Arlya Guard led
Lincoln B to their fifth win with
an impressive 51 goals from 55
attempts (93 per cent).
Lincoln A managed to continue
their winning streak with
a tight 51-50 win over UC A on
Tuesday.
Technical A had their first
win of the season against Kereru
B, 52-37, to move up the standings.
Meanwhile, Kia Toa A lost
49-43 to Kereru A despite a late
fightback.
FOOTBALL
The second half of the
Southern League returns this
weekend following the second
round of the Chatham Cup –
where the form teams marched
on.
Christchurch United look to
get their ninth win of the season
over Green Island in Dunedin
after a 3-1 win against University
of Canterbury. Green Island also
come off a Chatham Cup win,
beating Queens Park 1-0.
The Southern League
defending champions will go
into the game as favourites with
Green Island currently sitting on
six points.
Second-placed Technical take
on FC Twenty 11 following their
4-2 Chatham Cup win over
Coastal Spirit. The two teams last
clashed in the first game of the
year, where a Garbhan Coughlan
double-hat trick sealed the game
for Technical, 6-0.
Coastal will play Ferrymead
Bays on Sunday. Bays scraped
through with a 2-1 win over FC
Twenty 11 at the weekend and sit
three points under Coastal in the
Southern League.
Nomads and Selwyn return
from rest weeks to take on
Dunedin City Royals and Nelson
Suburbs respectively.
HOCKEY
Both Carlton Redcliffs teams
will have the toughest Challenge
Shield defence of the season
when they play Marist in top-ofthe-table
clashes in round 7.
Carlton men’s currently sit
first on 15 points ahead of Marist
(13), while the Carlton women
are even with Marist women on
13 points.
Carlton also hold the respective
silverware in division 1 men
and women’s grades too – a first
for any team.
The Carlton teams head into
this weekend’s matches following
wins, while Marist women
have had two rest weeks. Marist
men’s team last recorded a highscoring
7-4 win over University.
University will continue to
search for their first win of the
year against Avon on Saturday.
Avon recorded an upset 3-1 win
over third-placed HSOB/Burnside
in round 6.
HSOB/Burnside will look
for their fifth win of the season
against Hornby. Hornby will
also be searching for a win after
drawing 2-2 with Southern two
weeks ago.
Southern take on Harewood,
who lost 2-0 to Carlton in round 6.
In the women’s grade, Southern
will be hoping to score their
first goal of the year against
Harewood. However, Harewood
will be hungry to win following
their close 4-3 loss to Carlton.
After both recording 3-0 wins
in round 6, HSOB/Burnside and
Hornby will take on each other
at Nunweek Park.
RUGBY
University will look to extend
their lead at the top of the table
by defending the DCL Shield for
a third week against Sumner on
Saturday.
With four round robin games
remaining, University (32 points)
and Marist (31) have emerged as
top contenders for the premier
title as playoffs near. Marist sit
seven points ahead of thirdplaced
Lincoln University (24).
Since University started their
season with a 43-37 loss to
Sydenham, the Vipers have gone
on to win all games this season.
However, high-flying Sumner
will be a challenge for University
this weekend. The Wave recorded
a spectacular comeback win
(47-36) over Lincoln University
in round 8.
A close encounter is expected
between Marist and Lincoln
University on Saturday. Lincoln
will be hurting from their loss to
Sumner in round 8, but will be
confident playing at home.
Sydenham and Burnside
have the opportunity to
break into the top eight with
wins over Christchurch and
Belfast respectively. Defending
champions Sydenham sit in
ninth place on 18 points, one
above Burnside (17) and just six
behind third-placed Lincoln
University.
High School Old Boys will
look to celebrate their club
day with a win against New
Brighton, who managed a hardfought
34-30 win over Burnside
in round 8.
Shirley host Linwood at Burwood
Park for the Lionel Hunter
Trophy.
RUGBY LEAGUE
Friday night footy returns tomorrow
with an important clash
between the Eastern Eagles and
Halswell Hornets, as both teams
look to edge closer to the top of
the table. The Hornets go into
the match with three consecutive
wins, including an 18-8 upset
win over the Linwood Keas in
round 8.
Meanwhile, the Eagles will need
to start strong following their 38-
32 loss to the Riccarton Knights in
round 9. The Eagles trailed 28-12
at halftime, and despite a second
half comeback, the fourth-placed
team could not manage their fifth
win of the season.
After their first two losses of
the season, the table-topping
Keas take on the Knights on
Saturday. They will want to pull
away from the second-placed
Hornby Panthers, who are also
on 14 points alongside the Keas.
The Panthers host the
Northern Bulldogs at Leslie Park
on Saturday.
TAKE A BREAK KAIKOURA
Thursday June 8 2023 The Star 21
Manakau Lodge’s Kaikoura
Exploration Adventure
Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Kaikoura,
Manakau Lodge offers an exclusive adventure for
our guests that combines adrenaline-pumping
excitement with a unique exploration of the region’s
natural wonders. Take a private ATV/Tractor tour
for an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the
heart of Kaikoura; traversing rivers, farmlands, and
native bush, ending with a short guided walk to the
awe-inspiring 2,500-year-old Giant Totara tree (the
second largest tree in the South Island!).
Our ATV tours offer a unique opportunity to
witness the untouched beauty of Kaikoura up close.
Guests can take this tour in either our
ATV or our affectionately named tractor,
‘Kermit’, which has a people hauler
platform on the back, so adventurers
can take in the views unhindered! This
immersive encounter with Kaikoura’s
landscape allows visitors to forge a deeper
connection with the environment and
develop a greater appreciation for its
significance.
Beyond the exhilarating experience,
Manakau Lodge’s ATV adventure also plays
a vital role in promoting conservation and
wildlife preservation. By showcasing the
region’s native wildlife and habitats, guests
gain a better understanding of the need
to protect and preserve these ecosystems.
This awareness translates into support for
sustainable practices and conservation
efforts, ensuring the long-term sustainability of
Kaikoura’s natural treasures. We can teach you all
about the habits of local wildlife and the region’s
heritage! Spot deer, look for tracks, listen to native
birds, and so much more!
Manakau Lodge’s exclusive ATV exploration is a
gateway to a world of adventure and natural beauty.
This experience creates lasting memories. For those
looking to embark on a truly remarkable journey
while embracing the wonders of nature, Manakau
Lodge’s ATV adventure is an opportunity that should
not be missed!

We have two businesses in Christchurch for sale at
Present your home with
instant curb appeal
The saying “first impressions count”
can be especially true when looking
to sell your property. Property photos
are chosen to show the best features;
however, seeing the property from the
street can sway a decision. Potential
buyers can be drawn in by instant curb
appeal or discouraged by what they see.
It is easy to have an attractive frontage
with little effort. So what can you do to
improve your odds of selling by having
instant curb appeal?
Ensure your property is easy to find
with a clearly displayed house number,
and if your mailbox
is sitting on a lean or
looking a bit battered,
upgrade and get a new
one that suits your
property. Perhaps locate
your house number on
the house or fence in a
more prominent place.
One of the easiest
fixes is to have trees and
shrubs neatly trimmed,
with deadwood removed.
Adding pot plants with
green foliage or a splash of colour can
be inviting, add interest and enhance a
dull or drab area. However, if there are
already planters or pots, remove any dead
plants or deadhead flowers and ensure
no weeds. Also, remove any weeds from
edgings, concrete joins and spouting if
throughout Christchurch
they’ve managed to find a home there.
If there is any moss, algae or grime on
driveways, walkways, patios, and decks,
M: 021 300 567 E: mike@starmedia.kiwi
using a water blaster will quickly clean
them up. Likewise, front gardens that are
mulched, have stones or bark might be
best with a freshen up.
The front door is an important feature,
so refresh it with a coat of paint or stain
and clean any glass surrounds. Perhaps
it’s time for new door handles or fixtures
with updated hardware. Leisa Webster
from Ray White Rolleston also suggests
that any cobwebs be removed from the
entrance, have clean doormats and sweep
away any leaves. She also recommends
removing any shoes or shoe racks from
the front door.
Tracey Brankin from Mike Pero Real
Estate suggests, “touch up any shabby
paintwork, e.g., fences, letterbox, employ
a good window cleaner or clean them
yourself and have your lawns mowed and
Home & Property appears every Thursday, possibly re-sown delivered if needed.” FREE
Curb appeal aims to make interested
parties want to view your home. Use
For more information and bookings, paint, contact plants, Mike colour, Fulham and fixtures so that
your entranceway is clean, fresh and
welcoming.
The new Firearms
Registry is coming
Register your firearms and help make New Zealand safer.
Registry goes live on
24 June 2023
New Zealand will have a firearms registry
from 24 June 2023. If you’re a firearms
licence holder, you’ll be required to provide
information about your firearms or arms
items from this date.
The Registry will help us make New Zealand
safer. It will give licence holders more
confidence when buying or selling firearms,
as the Registry will let you know if you’re
dealing with a current licence holder and if the
firearm has been reported stolen.
The Registry is one of the ways we’re
strengthening how we manage firearms in
New Zealand. With responsible firearms licence
holders doing the right thing and filling in the
Registry, it will help keep track of legally owned
firearms and help prevent their transfer to
those who use them for criminal purposes.
You can register your firearms
or arms items on our website
at any time. Just click on
MyFirearms, the private and
secure portal that houses the
Registry. Otherwise our Registry
and Services team will
be available by phone to help
during business hours.
You have 5 years until 24 June 2028 to register your firearms. However there are some
circumstances where you are required to provide information for the Registry in a shorter time
frame. These are referred to in the Arms Amendment Regulations as ‘activating circumstances’.
It’s up to you to keep your information up to date. You can find information on these
timeframes at: firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/registry
