Ifirsch who was formerly owner of a photo shop in Madison, said to be Morris County's largest. During his many years m that town he also operated a portrait and commercial studio in connection with the store. After leaving Madison, Mr. Hinseh settled in 'Sooth Florida and became affiliated with the South's largest photo studios as a portrait photographer. Active in civic affairs, he was first vice president of the Madison Chamber of Commerce and treasurer of tbe Madison Kiwanis Club at the time of hifi departure from that town. 'The work party repaired equipment, painted end cleaned cabin sites, and "tenting areas. Camp Ken-Etiwa-Pec, located near Newton, N. J., in the heart of the Kittatinny Mountains, operates a sumiher camp program for Scouts and Explorers between the dates of July 2 aMd August 27. The Camp Director for the 1050 season is. Bruno yv. Pielke, who has had considerable experience in woodcraft, campcraft, and first aid. He has administered the program at Camp Ken-Etiwa-Pec for the past two seasons and is selecting a staff of college men and adult Scouters, Within a few weeks, the complete fist of personnel will be announced. The Camp Folder announcing plans for the season was released to the Scouts several weeks ago. This bulletin announced a special rate of $16.50 per weelc for all Scouts -who registered by May 15, 1950. Of special interest to Explorer Scouts is the canoe trip scheduled for those who qualify in the training program, which all must participate in before they may be enrolled. The trip will be made on the Delaware River with many nights of overnight camping en route. A skilled adult guide accompanies all trips. The local Council owns 540 acres of woodland and has complete control of Long Pine Lake on "which the camp is situate d. Enrollment for camp to date is as follows: South Mountain District, 20 boys, 70 boy weeks; East Orange District, none; Orange District, 7 boys, 14 boy weeks; North Mountain District, 7 boys, IS boy weeks. The Annua-I Scoutcraft Rally of South Mountain District Troops was held last Saturday from 2 to 5:15 pJTti. at Memorial Park in Maplewood. When the smoke of battle had finalty died down Troop 2, Jefferson School, Maplewood, under the leadership of Robert Lewis. Scoutmaster, had emerged the winner for the second successive year. Water Boiling was won by Troop 15, Short Hills, in 3 minutes, 13 seconds. Knot Tying Race showed Troop 2, Maplewood, in top form winning in 3 minutes, 56 seconds. This Troop also placed first in Bow and Drill Firemaking end Morse Code Flag Competition. In the latter event, 39 of 42 letters were sent cor- rectly at record-breaking speed. Compass Plotting and the Tennis Ball Relay Event were en easy first for Troop 16 of Millburn. The Antelope Race went to Troop 12, South Mountain PTA, Millburn, in a break-neck finish. Morse Code by use of Flash Signal was 1 won by Troop 3, Prospect Presbyterian Church, Maplewood. Judges for the Rally were supplied by various competing Troops which included the following Troops: Maplewood, Troops 2, 3,19, 21, and 24; South Orange, Troops 6, 9, 10, and 20; Millburn, Troops 12 and 16; Short Hills, .15 and 17. A total of 310 men and boys were present to supervise the events or enter competition. William Silleck was Rally Director and Milton Varner, District Commissioner; and Robfert Alenson, Training Chairman supervised scoring and judging of events. Arbor Day This Friday Arbor Day will "be observed locally in Taylor Park with a program under the joint sponsorship of the MllJburn Rotary Club, Girl Scouts and the Department of Public Recreation. William Merrick, president of the Rotary Club will plant a tree and the scouts will present an appropriate program at 3:30. The public is invited to attend the ceremony which, will take place alongside the Recreation House. This program is part of the national program for the con servation of trees. Mrs. E. W. Baker, Mrs. Matthew Tighe and Mrs. J. B. Keeton comprise the committee for the Girl Scouts. It seems that the gravity of Millhurn's "ice storm of '48," which occurred around New Year's lime of that year, is questioned by certain inhabitants of the "Windy City", Chicago. An urgent letter was received by the Item several weeks ago from a former resident of Short Hills now living in the midwestern city, asking for copies of the Item, January 1848. "At that time we owned a house in Short Hills which was damaged" it said. "But the Internal revenue seems to question that fact and has invited us to explain said damage ..." The letter continues: "However, if the investigator is a Chicogoan he'll never believe that any other locale could so insult Chicago by having worse weather et any time." • Letters to Editor Editor the Item I am writing to you* in hope you will be able to help me. You see while I was a student at school and a member of the Hi- Tri I helped make scrap booksjokes and. pictures for the sick at Lyons Hospital. Now that I am out of school I would like to continue doing this but have run up against a problem. I need the material such as jokes (picture ones) and movie star pictures. I know that there are many people in town who get such magazines as "The Saturday Evening Post" "Colliers" "The New Yorker" "The Journal" and any number of movie magazines, that after reading are piled in cellars till they are thrown out. If I could have these magazines, no matter how old or new, I would be able to make the scrap books. If the people could send them to me at my address or ! bring them in person, I would be ever 50. glad. I From the "Post", "New Yorker", 1 etc., I cut just the jokes out. From the movie books I cut color photos, pin-ups that will prove interesting. Then again, if the people would like, they may help by cutting the jokes out themselves and mailing them to me. Each one counts. I will do the scrap books in my spare time, nights, week ends. All I am asking: for is the jokes and magazines. I will get from my own pocket money, the scrap books, glue, etc. I would like to say that anything given is given free. I am not going to get paid anything for this, except paid in full from the joy the books will bring the men who fought for us and our country,-that we could live in peace.
