How to Plant
Trees and Shrubs
It's Arbor Day time in many
states. Late April is the time, too,
fvheit home owners frequently
:ransplant deciduous trees &7i4
ihru'bs.
When transplanting, O. W.
Spicer, president of the Bartlett
Tree Expert Company, suggests
keeping these general principles
In mind:
Preserve as many as possible of
Jtie fine fibrous or feeding roots.
Supply them with rich topsoil and
moieture. Avoid drying out t>?
roots. Trim ell torn or broken
•oots with a sharp knife, cutting
at a slant. To balance the teaibearing:
surface of deciduous trees
with the loss of roots, prune only
lateral branches.
Most nursery stock comes
bailed and burlapped. Follow
these tips for moderate sized
trees, up 1 , to 4 or 5 inches in diameter,
or shrubs 4 to 5 feet in
height:
1. Dig the hole &t least a* foot
wider and about 5 inches deeper
than the ball. A tree that juat fits
into a socket will have a hard
time during th* first or most
critical year after transplant ing,
2. Heap soil into, a little mound
j in the center of the hole m t h, e
tree will rest on this at the same
level it held in its former site. Lift
the tree into place.
3. Remove the burlap. Spread
the. roots m their natural position.
4. Holding the tree erect, firm
topsoil aroun-d the roots, making
sure to fill any air pockets. Do
not scuff bark from the roots or
base of trunk*
5. When the hole is half filled
with toll, fill with water. Let this
settle, then fill the soil to ground
level. Finally build uip an outer
ridge 3 to 4 inches around the
outer edge of the ball to reduce
water runoff.
6. If the tree is more than 7 fe&t
high, lean it slightly toward the
prevailing wind and support it
with stakes. If guy wires are used,
run thejo through pieces of old
garden h-cse.
7. A mulch of peat moss or
straw two or three inches thick
laid in the circle of the root area
will prevent drying out. Do not
attempt to plant graas to the
trunk of the tree the first year
after transplanting 1 . Proper
t ering Is most i mp ortant to the
newly transplanted tree. Make
sure the roots do not dry out. But
avoid waterlogging, for excess
water can kill some species ol
trees as fast as drought.
