Declaring that '•women have
failed to carry out the political
promise which started a century
ago," Mrs. Hardy emphasized that

there is "a splendid opportunity to
prove their political leadership by
progressive, unselfish community
service."
Mrs. Hardy recalled that the
suffrage movement was started in
1848 and carried out under the
leadership of only four women. She
pointed out that many of the same
forces are opposing women's prog-
ress today. She cited these as
"reactionary business men, bigoted
special interests like th national
real estate lobbyist who condemns
democracy, and ^•enaI political
leaders who place personal gain
above civic service.
Stressing that women are now
the majority of voters, Mrs. Hardy
predicted that an increasing num-
ber of women would be elected to
public office in the next decade.
