Description

Anabasis (The March Up Country) is the most famous work of the Athenian philosopher and

general Xenophon (430 - 355 BC). The story is that of 10,000 Greek soldiers traveling home

through foreign lands after a failed campaign and gives Xenophon's account of what it was like to

be a leader through such a trial.A student of Socrates, Xenophon ignored his advice not to travel

with Cyrus the Younger (son of Darius II) to Persia in an attempt to reclaim his home from Cyrus'

brother Artaxerxes II. After a long journey with Cyrus to Persia the war came to a head at the

Battle of Cunaxa (401 BC) where Cyrus was slain, and his army was shattered. Left leaderless

and abandoned by the bulk of their forces 10,000 Greek mercenaries undertook a harrowing

journey home across Turkey and Armenia through hostile territory the entire time. This copy of

Anabasis has been illustrated with over 50 beautiful images curated to bring the text to life and

help immerse the reader in the tale of Xenophon's journey.
