sesionwithpeoplechortlinginyourearoverajokein
yourfavouritebook.
That’stheatraction.It’snotjustyourfavouritebook,
it’salsotheirs.Thatissomethingyouandtheperson
ontheotherendofthemicrophonesharetogether.
Thatpointofconnectioniswhat,manywouldargue,
keepsuscomingback.
Moreformaly,thisisconsideredparasocial
interaction.It’sapsychologicalrelationshipthe
audiencedevelopswiththeperformerinmasmedia.
Nowonder,consideringtheyearwehad.Inaperiodof
extremelonelinesandashockeddetachmentfrom
familiarsocialcircles,it’snotasurprisethatpeople
haveturnedtotheslightlymanufactured
conversationstheycanfindontheinternet.Anything
isbeterthannothing.
Butthatdoesn’texplainthesustainedinterestin
podcasts.Theworldiscautiouslyopeningbackup,
andpeoplehavebeenfloutingtherulesforawhilenow
anyway.Althistosay,thesocialneedisn’taspresing
anymore.Whydopeoplekeeplisteningthen?
Asimpleanswerwouldbesustainedmomentum.If
you’vealreadystartedlisteningtopodcastsandare
investedinaseries,there’snoreasontostop.Makes
senseandwouldholdupasanexplanation.
Personaly,Idon’tthinkitcapturesthefulstory.The
joyoffindingsomeonewhosharesyourinterestsandis
verywilingtotalkforhoursaboutthem is
underrated.Findingsocialinteractionthatalsocaters
toyourdeeplyheldinterestsisdificult,andoften
limitedtoclosefriendshipsandrelationships.The
intimacythatpodcastsandtheirhostsprovideis
valuable–ahiddentreasureinapretyshitytime.
