FRIENDS BEFORE WE NEED THEM
...A PERTINENT
REMINDER TO
MAKE FRIENDS
BEFORE WE NEED
THEM IN THE
GOOD TIMES
As I write this column, the Queensland Government are pondering a change to their
cabinet ministers. I am not commenting on the politics of these moves, or whether they are
good or bad for the future of Queensland. However, I am pleased that the QHA remains
unphased by the outcome of this reshuffle. This confidence is because we operate on a
principle that was drummed into me early in my career that we should make friends before
we need them (and never forget your friends).
Our goal is to be able to improve the circumstances for members regardless of who sits
in the government office, or at least advance our point of view to members of parliament
that are solidly familiar with all parts of the hotel and tourist accommodation sector. This
doesn’t happen overnight – it has to be a concerted effort to get to know people across
the political spectrum, whether you always agree with them or not!
This is why the QHA took to opportunity to host many of the Queensland Parliament in
Cairns last week and have a constant program of visits and engagements across the state
to meet local, state and federal representatives. If we can understand their motivations, it
can assist us in finding mutual solutions to the challenges that face our industry.
In the next year, we are going to hear more and more about who will lead our state,
country and local governments. I encourage every member to invite their local candidates
into their venues to get to know them, particularly if you have not met them yet. These
relationships are the surest way to protect our industry when governments decide to make
regulation changes.
As always, if members want some help in this regard we at the QHA are simply a phone
call away. I am certain that most members are already engaged but it is a pertinent
reminder to make friends before we need them in the good times.
KENO APP
LAUNCHES IN
QUEENSLAND
QUEENSLAND KENO PLAYERS WILL
NOW HAVE THE GAME THEY KNOW
AND LOVE IN THE PALM OF THEIR
HAND WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE
KENO APP IN JUNE.
QHA REVIEW | 12
In the wake of the hugely popular launch of the
Keno Live Draw online to Queenslanders, Keno has
launched its Keno App in the state.
The app is another technical advancement for
Queensland hotels and their patrons, creating a more
exciting and seamless playing experience in 2023 and
beyond.
Over the past ten years, technological advancements
centred around convenience and ease of play have
transformed how customers engage with lottery style
games, and the Keno App is another significant step in
enriching the customers’ journey.
The Keno App delivers all the features players have
come to enjoy online in the convenience of an app,
with the added benefit of push notifications about
jackpots as they are growing so they never miss out.
Players will also be able to watch live game draws and
check draw results using the app from any location in
venues, giving them more freedom to move around or
stay seated where they can’t see a Keno screen.
“The Keno App means the game can go with your
customers anywhere in your hotel,” said Paul Malek,
Keno’s general manager of licensed venue operations.
“Instead of only one pathway to accessing the Keno
game draw, there will now be a number of ways for
customers to experience the game.
“They will have the ability to experience it in every part
of the venue, whether that’s the bar, bistro or gaming
room, allowing them to enjoy the thrill of watching the
numbers come up.
“While players still need to buy their Keno ticket
through a terminal in their favourite venue, it’s all about
enhancing the player experience in-venue and the
excitement of playing by making it more convenient
and seamless.”
Features include push notifications and effects
and separate jackpots, live draw and check results
screens. Other app features will help players decide
what to play, learn how to play, choose their favourite
numbers, as well as view hot and cold numbers,
watch trends and find a Keno venue in which to buy
their ticket.
“Keno has been providing Queensland hotels with a
valuable entertainment offering for more than 25 years,
giving customers the chance to win life-changing,
multi-million-dollar jackpots and instant-enriching cash
prizes every few minutes,” said Mr Malek.
“We are excited to be launching the app in Queensland
to continue the growth of the game and the app takes
us one step closer to the digital age of Keno in the
state.”
Point of Sale marketing materials will be available on
Keno Connect and include digital assets and printed
materials to encourage players to download the app
and play in your venue.
To find out more about the Keno App and how Keno
can support your hotel in 2023, contact your Keno
sales executive today.

POWER’S BEER RETURNED TO BEING POURED AT SUNCORP STADIUM LAST WEEKEND AT THE NRL MAGIC ROUND –
A LANDMARK MOMENT FOR THIS QUEENSLAND ICON RETURNING TO THE PLACE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.
To celebrate, CUB built a two-story pop-up ‘Power’s
Pub’ outside the stadium, which was open to everyone
and hosted a purpose-built ‘Power’s Deck’ inside the
stadium.
Key players from the hotel and pub industry were
invited on Friday night as guests of CUB, with Bernard
Power as their special guest. It must have been quite
the déjà vu moment for Mr Power with the Brisbane
Broncos beating the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles on
Friday night, as this was very close to a replay of the
match that started it all 35 years ago.
It was 1988 when the Broncos joined the Sydney
Football competition (the NSWRL) and upset the
applecart by defeating 1987 Premier Manly 44 - 19 in
the season opener at Lang Park. One thing is for sure,
the Power’s beers were flowing on Friday night as the
Broncos overpowered Manly 32 - 6.
Bernard is an integral part of the Broncos backstory,
and it is Brisbane folklore that the four businessmen
behind the team were wondering if their pockets were
deep enough to get their show on the road when
they were introduced to this local bloke behind a new
brewing company.
The rest is history as publican and passionate rugby
league supporter, Bernard Power, promised the
Broncos a million dollars a year for three years, which
meant that the Brisbane Broncos were the receiver of
the greatest ever sponsorship in Australian sport at the
time.
Bernard was also the bravest beer businessman this
state may have ever seen as he agreed to give that
huge amount of money to a footy team that had never
even played a game. When the Broncos ran out onto
the hallowed turf in the Power’s jersey and defeated
the premiership team, they became the heroes of
Queensland sport, and Power’s beer became a local
legend.
AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST AND MOST BELOVED
BEER FESTIVAL, THE GREAT AUSTRALASIAN BEER
SPEC’TAP’ULAR (GABS), RETURNS TO BRISBANE.
QHA REVIEW | 14
The GABS Craft Beer Festival is making its way to
Queensland and brewing up something special on 10
June at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
This year, the centrepiece of the GABS events are
120 new speciality brews from 120 different breweries
across Australia, New Zealand, UK and USA. Each keg
will contain new, quirky and never before seen brews
made especially for the festival that are just waiting to
be tapped for the first time.
Some wacky honourable mentions include the Dad
and Dave’s Brewing Boba Beer, Woolshed Brewery
and Vili’s Family Bakery Meat Pint, Atomic Vovo Whip
Sour and Dunkin’ Donuts Imperial Jam Donut Golden
Ale.
One of America’s best and most influential
independent craft breweries, Sierra Nevada, is also
attending the GABS festival this year and bringing with
them an exclusive beer brewed just for the event – the
No Place Like Aus IPA.
Along with a myriad
of craft beers to try,
guests will be able to
meet and share stories with a cracking line up of some
of the best brewers while exploring the event’s street
food, entertainment, silent disco, beer education, fun
games and so much more.
The festival is extended this year and will be hosted
across two five and a half hour sessions, with the
first starting at 11:00am and the second starting at
6:00pm. While beer may be the star of the show,
GABS is planning to offer debuts from Archie Rose,
Monkey Shoulder Whisky and Yellow Tail Wines along
with some seltzers, ciders and non-alcoholic options
to ensure all palates are catered for.
For those interested in the GABS Craft Beer Festival,
tickets and event information can be found at
NEWS
TRAILBLAZER
FOLLOWING THE EXCITING NEWS THAT SIERRA NEVADA WILL BE A GUEST AT THE GABS FESTIVAL THIS
YEAR, WE DECIDED TO DELVE INTO THE AMERICAN PREMIER CRAFT BREWER WHOSE PIONEERING
SPIRIT CHANGED THE INDUSTRY.
QHA REVIEW | 16
Driven by innovation and curiosity, Sierra Nevada is
known for sparking a true craft beer revolution across
the globe and for doing things just a little differently.
Just two years ago the brewery successfully launched
a keg of their Big Little Thing IPA 134 metres, breaking
the Guinness World Record for the greatest distance a
20kg projectile has been thrown by a trebuchet – but
their legacy certainly goes beyond that.
The brewery’s story started in 1969, when founder Ken
Grossman made a habit of chasing his curiosity by
tinkering with covert science projects in his backyard
and setting the stage for his homebrewing passion.
Fascinated by the alchemy of fermentation, Ken
bought his first homebrewing kit (and hid it from his
mum) when he was a teenager.
In 1976 Ken opened The Home Brew Shop in Chico,
California and slowly played with more risky, hopforward
flavours at a time when the world’s craft beer
industry wasn’t known for taking chances.
When he finally started a brewery, Ken scoured
salvage yards and defunct dairies to find the tanks,
pipes and valves he needed to hand-build Sierra
Nevada’s original brewhouse. In 1980, he put his first
batch of craft beer to the test – a heady stout that was
a 13-hour labour of love.
In a bold move, Ken later took a chance on a new
U.S.-grown hop, Cascade, known for its strong pine
and citrus flavours. This resulted in Sierra Nevada’s
signature pale ale which jumpstarted their brewing
legacy and inspired thousands of breweries to come.

Still proudly ‘family owned, operated and
argued over’, Sierra Nevada now has two
breweries – the Mills River Taproom and the
Chico Taproom. In addition to their Little
Things, hard kombucha and non-alcoholic
releases, their core range of brews also
include their pale ale, Torpedo Extra IPA and
Atomic Torpedo Imperial IPA.
Sierra Nevada is also well-known for their
high quality yet low impact brewing methods
that paved the way for sustainable efforts in
the industry. Instead of using shortcuts to
produce their beer, the company has invested
in the largest solar array in craft history,
diverting 99.8% of their solid waste from the
landfill and building the first LEED platinum
production brewery in the U.S.
For 54 years the brewery has been eager
to innovate and diversify the world of craft
brewing. One thing is for sure – Sierra
Nevada’s specially-brewed ‘No Place Like Aus
IPA’ starring in this year’s GABS Festival is
certainly looking to live up to all of the hype.

A MIX OF GAMES
ARISTOCRAT HAS BEEN DELIVERING EXCEPTIONAL GAMES TO PLAYERS THROUGHOUT QUEENSLAND FOR MANY
YEARS WITH A FOCUS ON DEVELOPING A WIDE RANGE OF GAMES THAT CATER TO THE NEEDS OF HOTELS OF ALL
SIZES WITH DIFFERING PLAYER DEMOGRAPHICS.
QHA REVIEW | 18
This still rings true, as shown by their strong line-up of
innovative games that can be mixed and matched to
suit your hotel and players. Aristocrat already has great
games with stellar performance, such as:
• Cash Express Luxury Line — this train-themed
golden beauty has been steaming ahead with solid
average daily turnover for months now
• Dollar Storm — undoubtably a player favourite in
the Queensland market, the two new additions to
the Dollar Storm game family, Aussie Boomer and
Fight for Troy, are continuing to engage players and
continue the strong performance
They also have more new games coming to help keep
your gaming floor up-to-date with the latest in gaming
innovation and game play mechanics.
One that is expected to make a big splash is Aqua
Kingdom, which offers a new spin on Choy’s Kingdom
with its new Mega Hold and Spin feature. Aqua
Kingdom is great for higher denomination play, as it
can deliver twice the wins of the Super feature.
There are four different games in the family, with the
first two games landing in hotels this month.
Next up they have Wild Rumble, which should make
some noise on gaming floor across the Sunshine
State. Wild Rumble has Grand Star in its DNA and it’s
great for players looking for bells and whistles! With its
frequently hitting 5-of-a-kind feature, there is no Hold
and Spin mechanic and no free games, meaning more
goes into the features which can trigger more often.
They’ve also added bigger Cash on Reels and more
multipliers.
Additionally, if you need to update your floor with
new machines and games, or have limited gaming
licenses, consider moving out your old classics for
Players Choice Hits. This multi-game package includes
six great games and, most importantly, it’s the first
time Grand Star has been available as a Standalone
Progressive.
Find out how you can maximise our mix of games to
match your requirements. Talk to your local Aristocrat
representative today.

Chris Allan, head of marketing for core beer at
design is about honouring XXXX’s rich Queensland
their hometown heroes, the Queensland Maroons.
“XXXX has a proud 145-year history of supporting
communities that they are a part of. It allows all footy
fans to showcase their community pride when they
come together in living rooms, footy clubhouses and
local pubs to support the Maroons in the annual battle
for state pride,” he said.
The release is a celebration of the brewery’s
partnership with the Queensland Maroons and brings
further enthusiasm to the already hyped 2023 Ampol
State of Origin Series, which is kicking off with Game
1 on Wednesday, 31 May at Adelaide Oval.
General manager of commercial and consumer
engagement at Queensland Rugby League, Anthony
Ireland-Jones, said the Maroons are extremely proud
of the communities that helped get them to where
they are now.
“I look forward to seeing Queenslanders from all over
the state sharing their pride in their postcode with the
XXXX collectible cans in hand as they enjoy the games
this year,” he said.
The numbered tinnies are sure to be a hit not
just with footy fans, but also avid collectors. The
Castlemaine Perkins brand has easily one the most
bustling collectors communities in the state due to
its abundance of historical merchandise, passionate
fanbase and ties with the State of Origin Maroons.
Queensland Maroons lock, Patrick Carrigan, said
growing up in Brisbane, it was his dream to represent
his state in the Maroon jersey.
“When I step out onto the field, I’m stepping out for
everyone from my hometown of Holland Park and for
our loyal Queensland supporters. The new XXXX cans
are a great way for Queenslanders to share our pride.
Cheers to the mighty Maroons!” he said.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY
NEW REGIONAL QUEENSLAND INITIATIVES TO PROMOTE MODERATION, RESPECT
AND RESPONSIBILITY IN PUBS, BARS AND BOTTLE SHOPS.
QHA REVIEW | 20
DrinkWise and the QHA are launching a new initiative
to remind Queenslanders who choose to purchase
and drink alcohol about the importance of moderating
their alcohol consumption, always being respectful
towards others and knowing that support services are
there to provide help and advice if needed.
DrinkWise chief executive officer, Simon Strahan, said
the latest Australian Government statistics confirm that
Australians are continuing to make healthier and safer
decisions with respect to their alcohol consumption.
“Over the past 15 years we have seen drinking
habits change substantially, with less drinking at
risky levels and many reporting that they have cut
back on their consumption**. Of course, while the
majority of Australians are choosing to drink within
the recommended government guidelines, there are
still some who are drinking at risky levels, engaging in
anti-social behaviour or turning to alcohol as a coping
strategy, which is why we’re increasing our efforts in
Queensland,” he said.
This initiative expands upon DrinkWise’s education
efforts in Queensland, which increased after the
organisation’s research revealed Queenslanders (34%)*
are significantly more likely to be drinking alcohol at
risky levels when compared with the nation’s average
(28%)*.
Risky drinkers are classified as people who consume
10 or more standard drinks a week, or more than four
standard drinks during a day.
Senior Sergeant of Queensland Police Gary Hunter
said The DrinkWise messaging is really important
to educate the wider community about drinking in
moderation and being respectful to those they live with
and the wider community at all times.
“The resources remind our community about expected
behaviour in our licensed venues and encourage them
to reach out for help if they or someone they know
needs support managing their alcohol consumption,”
he said.

In conjunction with Queensland Police, member for
Cairns and assistant minister for Tourism Industry
Development Mr Michael Healy, mayor of Cairns Cr
Bob Manning OAM, QHA, Clubs Queensland and the
North Queensland Cowboys, the DrinkWise initiative
aims to clearly set expectations around acceptable
behaviour in licensed venues. It also reinforces that if
people are having trouble managing their consumption
or behaviour, asking for help is okay, with the support
of services including, Lives Lived Well, ReachOut,
13YARN, 1800RESPECT, DVConnect and Men’s
Referral Service available to offer advice and support.
Member for Cairns and assistant minister for tourism
industry development, Mr Michael Healy, said the
collaboration with police, industry, community and
government will help to promote a great experience
for patrons as well as reinforcing expectations around
individual responsibility when entering our pubs, bars
and bottle shops in regional Queensland.
“This is an important initiative that will also help set
expectations for the 2.8 million visitors from across the
globe who holiday here each year with us,” he said.
Moderation, respect and responsibility themed
posters, coasters, and digital assets will be displayed
in 24 pubs, bars and bottle shops throughout central
Cairns from today. Moderation, mental health and
support service social media messaging will also
be tailored for adult audiences in the Cairns area,
including specific moderation and mental health
messaging directed towards young adults.
Mayor of Cairns, Cr Bob Manning, said education is
important, and this whole-of-community approach is a
great step in the right direction.
“These DrinkWise materials will serve as consistent
reminders to those customers who choose to drink,
to do so responsibly and to socialise in a respectful
manner. They also remind customers that if they or
someone they know need help and support managing
alcohol consumption there are some great support
services available and that asking for help is a sign of
strength,” he said.
The initiative will also be expanded to the 49 licensed
venues (93 including bottle shops) across the broader
Cairns, Mount Isa and Townsville areas in regional
Queensland as well as Clubs Queensland venues
across the state in the coming weeks.
QHA Chief Executive, Bernie Hogan, said QHA is
proud to support this initiative to remind patrons that
having a great experience at licensed venues means
respecting those around you and consuming in
moderation if drinking alcohol.
“It is important that QHA are helping promote
messages that encourage conversations about
mental health, with pubs integral to our regional
Queensland communities. We want to ensure that
as our customers come together at licensed venues,
to socialise, have a meal, catch up with friends and
family, they have a great time and they also use these
opportunities to talk about local issues and support
each other,” he said.
A VISTA TO
REMEMBER
QHA REVIEW | 22
NAMED AFTER ITS TRANQUIL ATMOSPHERE AND SPRAWLING VIEWS
OF THE LOCKYER VALLEY, THE BLUE MOUNTAIN HOTEL REMAINS A
PLACE TO ESCAPE FROM THE BUSTLE OF EVERY DAY AFTER 135 YEARS.

FEATURE
QHA REVIEW | 23

FEATURE
Settled on top of the countryside town of Harlaxton,
north of Toowoomba, the heritage-listed pub is
thriving more than ever after a recent renovation.
The history of the pub dates all the way back to
1888 when it was built on Mt Kynoch to service
railway workers. After the original building burnt
down in 1899, a new hotel was rebuilt on its current
site in 1902 with a vision for it to be an escape from
the heat of Toowoomba city.
Blue Mountain Hotel was initially nicknamed the
Queensland Health Resort and boasted six hotel
rooms, a kitchen and amenities. Back in those days
a stay would cost two pounds and two shillings per
week and eight shillings a night.
In 1931, publican Thomas Burke wanted the hotel to
have a name reflecting the serene atmosphere of the
hotel and its iconic view of the countryside below,
and so it was renamed the Blue Mountain Hotel.
While the pub no longer calls themselves a health
resort (and takes pride in their fully stocked and
modernised bar) it’s wonderful views overlooking the
rolling hills of the Darling Downs region is enough to
make anyone feel truly relaxed.
Venue manager of Blue Mountain Hotel, Andy
Hinton, said while photos certainly showcase the
pub’s setting to a certain extent, you have to see the
view in person to really appreciate it.
“Our pub is situated in a beautiful location, and the
building is also just wonderful too. Over the years it
has maintained its heritage style complete with its
original, local Toowoomba brickwork.

FEATURE
“The venue caters for all and especially families that
want to relax and let their kids play on the spacious
lawn area. We value our family customers a lot and
so we hold a family fun day every year on the pub’s
birthday.
“The pub’s location, building and large grassy spaces
all come together to make it the perfect place for
functions and event spaces. It is a place you can book
for any occasion, whether it be a birthday, wedding,
engagement, baby shower or anything else,” he said.
In 2009 one of Australia’s market leaders in hospitality,
the ALH Group, purchased the pub and have operated
it ever since. Six years in the making, carefully curated
renovations on the heritage building finally began in
November 2021 and were completed in October
2022.
Andy said the renovation was a long-winded process
given its heritage, but they are delighted to have kept
its rich history and brought it into the future.
“The renovation allowed us to build a new sports bar in
the location of the drive through bottle shop, improve
the gaming room and upgrade the facilities for the
bistro and amenities.
“The inspiration behind the renovation was to make the
hotel more appealing to our transit customers, making
it a destination complete with an amazing view. With
that and the hotel’s rich history in mind, Cayas + Ward
Architects preserved many features such as fireplaces
and exposed brickwork to keep the pub connected to
its roots.

FEATURE
QHA REVIEW | 26
“The total build cost was in excess of $4 million
dollars. The upstairs accommodation, which the hotel
unfortunately no longer uses, was not given an update
but it’s still got snippets of its rich history. We regularly
show our visitors the old rooms and give them a feel
for what it was like in the 1900’s,” he said.
The Blue Mountain Hotel boasts a sports bar, 35
gaming machines, a bistro and a lawn area with
picnic tables and an undercover deck for functions or
casual outside dining. The bistro’s menu is comprised
of traditional pub food with additional smoked meat
options and platters to share which are all best
enjoyed while soaking in the pub’s iconic view.
Since 1888 the venue has remained a favourite
meeting place with the locals and an important part
of the community. Andy said The Blue Mountain Hotel
currently has four sponsor clubs involved with the
pub – Coolaroo AFL, Brothers Rugby League, Rangers
Baseball and Thunder Soccer Club.
“We are involved in supporting them with sponsorship
through the year and also giving them the use of our
venue for their meetings and events.
“We also partner with various charities throughout the
year. Notably in 2022 we raised funds for the neonatal
ward through the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation on
our first opening weekend after the renovation.
“We also recently engaged a local artist, Anne
O’Sullivan. She painted our wonderful view to
showcase in our gaming room. She also painted
another abstract piece in the sports bar,” he said.
No matter the occasion, the Blue Mountain Hotel
certainly offers a unique, fresh experience with a
setting like no other. When asked about what is next
for the venue, Andy fondly said the future is definitely
bright for the old pub.
“The renovation has brought an increase in trade that
sees us being able to hire more staff and increase
employment in the local area. We are also looking
to plan more festival type events and live touring
entertainment, but this is in the infancy of planning so
watch this space.
“If you haven’t been to Toowoomba, please pop in and
visit on the way through. Our pub’s feel has completely
changed, and you will be pleasantly surprised with its
new look and improved vibe,” Andy said.

VENUE SAFETY INITIATIVES FUNDED
BY THE INVESTING IN WOMEN GRANTS
The Palaszczuk Government is firm in its commitment
to ensuring all women feel safe and respected in our
hospitality and live music venues. One of the ways
we’re helping Queenslanders feel safer is through our
Investing in Queensland Women grant program.
It’s fantastic to see that one of the grant recipients,
QMusic, used their funding to roll out their Concert
Care initiative in partnership with Griffith University’s
MATE Bystander program.
We know that to make our live music venues safer,
we need to change behaviours and attitudes towards
gender and sexuality. Concert Care is a new social
code that clearly explains behaviour that is or isn’t ok
at live events.
They have a range of resources with messages such
as ‘Clothing isn’t Consent’ and ‘Groping is for Gronks’.
I would encourage QHA members who host live music
events in their hotels to consider reaching out to
QMusic to access some of these resources.
MATE Bystander also works with venue staff to provide
training on bystander intervention – this is an option
available for QHA Review members who are interested
in training for their staff.
In addition to the work with QMusic, MATE Bystander
has partnered with government and Telstra to develop
the Be there app. This app gives users the tools they
need to be an effective bystander by offering advice
on how to safely intervene if they believe someone is
at risk or experiencing domestic and family violence
(DFV).
This app is not only useful for our community, but it
can be a handy tool for your staff if they suspect a
patron or another staff member might be experiencing
DFV.
We all have a role to play in keeping our communities
safe and inclusive and I encourage you all to make use
of these resources.
If you’d like more information about the Concert Care
initiative, staff training or to receive these resources,
please email QMusic at safety@qmusic.com.au.
You can download the Be there app for free from the
app store or Google play store.
PREPARING FOR MAJOR
SPORTING EVENTS
June and July will bring two key sporting events
to Brisbane with the State of Origin being held at
Suncorp Stadium in June, and several of the FIFA
Women’s World Cup matches being held at Brisbane
Stadium in July.
Licensees are encouraged to lodge their extended
hours trading permit applications for these events now
as these applications must be received by the Office of
Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) at least 21 days
before the event.
Hotels are entitled to four permits in any 12-month
period for trading between 7am and 10am and six
permits in a calendar year for trading between 12
midnight and 5am. Please refer to the Business
Queensland website for more information regarding
lodgement and eligibility requirements prior to
preparing an application.
These events will attract more patrons to hotels
which can lead to an increase in alcohol related
harms. All hotel staff should familiarise themselves
with their hotel’s Responsible Service of Alcohol
(RSA) procedures to minimise the risk of harm to their
patrons.
Large events can also mean larger crowds. If you
are expecting a larger crowd, consider how you are
managing your patrons’ safety including the number
of crowd controllers you employ during these sporting
events.
Another aspect of venue management to consider
is noise levels. There are several ways licensees can
minimise noise disturbance, including:
• closing doors/windows
• adjusting the location and direction of speakers
• regularly monitoring noise from outside your venue
so you understand where/how noise travels from
your venue
• controlling patron noise - you may wish to ask your
patrons to wait inside while they wait for their ride to
reduce the noise.
OLGR has a range of resources on the Business
Queensland website which can assist you with these
matters.
OFF-SITE CATERING SERVICES
QHA REVIEW | 30
It is possible for hotels to earn very good money by
providing catering services away from its primary
licensed venue, and you may be considering the
provision of catering off-site to financially boost your
hotel business and expand its range of services.
The type of catering you may be able to provide will
depend on the licences or permits you hold for your
business.
Food catering
Generally, if your business operations include the
preparation or handling of unpackaged food for retail
sale, you will require a food licence in order to sell
that food for human consumption. Hotel businesses
will often involve the provision of food for on-site or
takeaway consumption and will require this food
licence in order to sell food.
The type of food licence you require will depend on
your business and the premises that requires the food
licence. Usually for hotel owners, the food licence they
would be seeking to obtain is for their fixed premises
(hotel site). Generally, with a food licence you will also
be able to provide food catering services both onsite
and offsite.
Catering with liquor
Where you intend to provide catering services for an
event or private function with the provision of liquor,
you will need to first ensure that your licence has
an endorsement to cater off-site. You may apply for
this endorsement to your liquor licence by way of
an application to the Office of Liquor and Gaming
Regulation (OLGR).
The following licence types may be eligible for an
endorsement to cater off-site:
• subsidiary on-premises licence
• subsidiary off-premises licence (caterers only)
• commercial hotel licence
• nightclub licence
The endorsement will allow you to provide catering
services off-site from the main licensed premises for
events that are organised by other people. However,
you can only provide such catering services away from
your licensed premises where you are also providing
food catering. Accordingly, whilst you may be able
to provide food catering off-site without liquor, you
cannot provide catering off-site for liquor without
also providing food catering or ensuring that food is
otherwise being provided.
Further permits
Upon the OLGR granting the endorsement for catering
off-site on your liquor licence, you will not require
any further permissions or permits from the OLGR to
provide off-site catering for private functions such as
birthdays, weddings or parties. However, if you intend
to provide off-site catering services for a public event
such as a festival or sporting event, you will need to
obtain a commercial public event permit from the
OLGR.
As discussed in our previous article regarding
commercial public event permits, if you require the
endorsement for catering off-site in order to cater for a
public event, an application for the endorsement can
be made along with the application for a commercial
public event permit.
If you are considering an expansion to your business
services for catering off-site and you require assistance
with the application process, please do not hesitate to
contact me on 07 3224 0230.

AROUND THE BEND
WHEN YOU’RE IN A PUB AS WACKY AS THE
BANANA BENDER PUB, LETTING GO, HAVING
A LAUGH AND SAVOURING THE EXPERIENCE
COMES NATURALLY.
From when you see the venue’s grand and
colourful silhouette on the Bruce Highway to
when you step inside its eccentric interior, it’s
quite difficult not to smile at the Aussie icon that
is the Banana Bender Pub. With 33 years of rich
history, the building which was formerly known as
the Ettamogah Pub stands tall alongside Aussie
World theme park, both of which opened in 1989.
Four years ago, the pub underwent a modern
transformation to unveil a vibrant, unique and
tropical look, with the venue now having three
levels and a massive wrap-around deck. General
Manager of Aussie World, Jenny Howell, said
since 2019, the pub has had a focus on being a
happy, energetic place for people to experience
and enjoy.
INSIGHTS
“The Banana Bender Pub has its roots in the
great state of Queensland that makes it home to a
certain type of person. We reckon it’s the endless
sunshine, rich soil and plentiful sea that breeds
larrikins and true-blue mates.
“Banana Benders was originally a nickname made
to mock Queensland’s relaxed way of life, but we
have embraced it. It goes perfectly with our gritty
sense of humour and penchant for not taking life
too seriously – Queenslanders tell it like it is.
“Our logo illustrates two plantation workers
bending a banana, which is a nod to the quirkiness,
humour, authenticity, colour, character and taste
of Queensland that the pub welcomes visitors to
experience,” she said.
The pub is undoubtedly proud of its identity and
theme, which makes entering through its doors
an experience in itself. On each level of the
venue there are hundreds of exciting and unique
decorations including a surfing koala and kangaroo,
a giant feature wall in the shape of a wave, a ceiling
laden with vines and native Australian birds, a wall
of music records, colourful stained-glass windows
and a giant snake wrapped around a palm tree.
Scattered throughout the venue are also private
function rooms, each with their own theme
showcasing the recognisable elements of Australia
including the beach, the tropics and more. The
pub’s hearty dose of cheekiness and explosive
colour from floor to ceiling certainly makes sense,
as Jenny said the venue pays homage to the
eccentric stories that make Queensland great.
“It’s a quintessential Queensland pub experience
served with a quirky twist because you’ll find a
new story or character around every turn lined with
memorabilia.
“This pub really knows how to party and offers
something for the kids, 21st birthday parties,
engagements, weddings or that work event you
want the team to remember,” she said.
Along with its Aussie charm, the pub
also embraces classic and delicious pub
offerings (including their claim to fame, the
Parmigiana’O’rama) in addition to cold brews and
cocktails in the venue’s bar – The Den. Live music
and entertainment can also be enjoyed in The
Shed and laughs shared in the pub’s very own beer
garden.

INSIGHTS
QHA REVIEW | 36
Jenny said along with overall touch-ups and
improvements, the Banana Bender Pub has recently
introduced a specialised menu in partnership with
Rawganix Farm – a boutique farm growing organic
beef, lamb and pork products free of artificial
hormones and antibiotics in the small rural town of
Tansey in Gympie.
“We are committed to providing our diners with the
finest locally sourced ingredients, so it has been
a great pleasure to partner with the farm to serve
the most delicious meat dishes you’ll taste on the
Sunshine Coast.
“Animals at the farm are nurtured in a green
environment, fed in fresh pastures and provided
with natural minerals and vitamins to promote their
wellness. Every effort is made to maintain their
optimal health, as happy and healthy animals taste
better and are kinder to the planet.
“Locally sourcing naturally farmed and organic meats
while ensuring the least possible kilometres from
paddock to plate allows our chefs to work with the
freshest ingredients to prepare the most outstanding
beef, lamb and pork dishes for everyone to savour,”
she said.
The chefs at the Banana Bender Pub present two
special menus each week featuring Rawganix Farm
meats. Homegrown on the Sunshine Coast, the local
produce is used both in western inspired delicacies
and other dishes with Asian influences in the pub’s
restaurant – Mango’s Bar and Grill. Jenny said awardwinning
executive chef Robert Cauilan leads their
team of international chefs.
“Their cooking adds an innovative twist to a standard
pub menu with seasonal ingredients creating delicious
dishes with a focus on sourcing fresh, local produce.
“They really have an innovative approach to cooking
and take Aussie’s favourite pub food to a new level.
Chef Cauilan is passionate about creating new and
exciting dishes that reflect the local flavours and
seasonality of the area,” she said.

INSIGHTS
INGREDIENTS, SO IT HAS BEEN A GREAT PLEASURE TO PARTNER WITH RAWGANIX FARM
TO SERVE THE MOST DELICIOUS MEAT DISHES YOU’LL TASTE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST...
Along with their updated menu, the pub has also just
launched their Discover Downunder Rewards Program
– a loyalty initiative which rewards visitors based on
their visits to Aussie World, Banana Bender Pub,
Artisun and Cellarbrations which are all located on
Downunder Drive in Palmview.
By offering up good times and showcasing the laidback
charm of Queensland, it’s no wonder why
people find themselves visiting more than once. The
quirky Aussie atmosphere of the Banana Bender Pub
certainly brings out the unbridled joy in people.
“It’s a place for friends and family to share good times
REVIEW OF AUSTRALIA’S MIGRATION SYSTEM
The federal government released the Review of the
Migration System Final Report 2023 in late April.
This report puts forward the case for overall reform
to the migration system in order to prevent Australia
becoming a nation of ‘permanently temporary’
residents. It also foreshadows the risks of failing to
encourage economic growth and attracting the best
workers.
The report proposes changes to the skilled migration
program, student visas and employer sponsored visas
and outlines the steps needed to ensure Australia can
‘reap the opportunities and navigate the challenges’
that arise over the next two decades. Migration has
been critical to driving economic prosperity. From
the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s, the share of skilled
migrants in our annual intake doubled. This coincided
with Australia’s economic miracle – from 1991 onward,
Australia enjoyed the longest running period of
continuous economic growth on record anywhere in
the world.
Yet today, Australia’s migration program is not fit for
purpose. The objectives of the program are unclear,
and successive governments and policymakers have
responded to challenges through piecemeal reforms
which have not addressed fundamental underlying
issues. Australia now has a migration program that
fails to attract the most highly skilled migrants and fails
to enable business to efficiently access workers.
While we have long prided ourselves on the focus on
permanent residence in our migration program, we
now have more than 1.8 million temporary migrants
living in Australia with the legal ability to participate
in our labour market. They are working in all parts of
our economy, in some cases supporting key sectors
and the delivery of critical services. Many of these
people wish to make Australia home but too often face
tangled and lengthy pathways to permanent residence.
The report identifies five objectives on which Australia’s
migration program should be built.
1. Building Australia’s prosperity by lifting productivity,
meeting labour supply needs and by supporting
exports.
2. Enabling a fair labour market, including by
complementing the jobs, wages and conditions of
domestic workers.
3. Building a community of Australians.
4. Protecting Australia’s interests in the world.
5. Providing a fast, efficient and fair system.
Taken together, these objectives ensure the migration
system will operate in Australia’s national interest.
A number of proposed reform directions have been
outlined in the areas of prioritising the people we
need; making the system simpler and more efficient;
delivering a better system on the ground; and restoring
Australian values at the heart of the system.
Some key points include:
• labour market testing being removed – this is
a very good thing for our industry as we know
members as employers have not supported it
• the Skills List being removed and replaced by Jobs
and Skills Australia doing ongoing assessments
of required skills – this poses some risk for our
industry, particularly regarding cooks, and it will be
up to us collectively to provide supporting evidence
to support them remaining on the list
• the Federal Government increasing the Temporary
Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) from
$53,900 to $70,000 from 1 July 2023
• establishment of a pathway to permanent
residency for all skills visas – this is a big win for
Australia’s competitiveness in the global labour
market
The government also announced that by the end of
2023, Temporary Skill Shortage short stream visa
holders will have a pathway to permanent residency
within our existing capped permanent program.
The AHA made a submission to the review in
December 2022. The Report and the Government
response to date sets out sensible actions which
will make the system better for businesses and
applicants alike. The reality is overseas workers remain
a necessary part of our hotel and accommodation
industry sector workforce – overseas workers fill gaps
where, unfortunately, Australian workers are unable
to fill the roles required. AHA agreed the increase of
$16,100 to the Temporary Skilled Migration Income
Threshold has been based on multiple CPI increases
and will ensure that skilled overseas workers are being
paid in accordance with today’s market salary levels,
and we will be watching carefully to ensure regional
and rural businesses especially don’t face any added
disadvantage during the implementation.
A further consultation process will launch shortly on
the government’s proposed migration strategy, which
the AHA on behalf of members will be involved in,
and we are expecting further announcements from
the government, which will be circulated to members
when received.
ADULT EDUCATION
ADULT LEARNING STYLES AND TRAINING TOOLS TO HELP STAFF
UNDERSTAND AND RETAIN INFORMATION AND SKILLS
QHA REVIEW | 40
Investing in your employees learning and development
can increase employee engagement, boost
productivity and improve your business’s success.
Employees who are not given opportunities to learn
and grow in their position are more likely to leave.
Lack of career development opportunities is a big
contributor to employees leaving their jobs.
So how do adults learn?
The three most recognized learning styles are:
Visual learners who learn best through
images, pictures, diagrams, films, videos or
demonstrations.
Visual learners prefer seeing what they are learning,
meaning pictures and images help them understand
ideas and information better than explanations. Visual
learners:
• prefer written instructions rather than verbal
instructions
• prefer to have photographs and illustrations to view
when receiving written or visual instructions
• prefer a time-line, calendar or some other similar
diagram to remember sequences of events
• observe all physical elements in the learning
environment
• carefully organise their learning materials
• remember and understand through the use of
diagrams, charts and maps
• study materials by reading notes and organising it
in outline form
The best training methods for visual learners includes
lots of interesting visual material in a variety of formats.
Ensuring visual presentations are well organised,
handouts and all other written work are as easy to read
and visually appealing as possible and making use of
technologies like computers, video and photography
will help aid visual learners.
Auditory learners who learn best through the
process of listening and talking.
Auditory learners prefer to hear the message or
instructions being given. These adult learners prefer
to have someone talk them through a process, rather
than reading about it. Auditory learners:
• remember what they say and what others say very
well
• remember best through verbal repetition and by
saying things aloud
• prefer to discuss ideas they do not immediately
understand
• remember verbal instructions well, but find it
difficult to work quietly for long periods of time
• are easily distracted by noise, but also easily
distracted by silence
• verbally express interest and enthusiasm
• enjoy group discussions
Some ideal training methods for auditory learners are
to rephrase points and questions in several different
ways to communicate the intended message. Varying
speed, volume and pitch, as appropriate, helps create
interesting aural textures. Writing down key points or

Therese Kelly
TRAINING AND SAFETY RTO 30826
words before providing verbal instructions will help
to avoid confusion due to pronunciation. Where
possible the incorporation of multimedia applications
utilising sounds, music, or speech will also help aid
auditory learners.
Kinesthetic learners who learn best by doing.
Kinesthetic learners want to sense the position
and movement of the skill or task. These learners
generally do not like discussion in classes but prefer
to do something. Kinesthetic learners:
• remember best through getting physically
involved in whatever is being learned
• enjoy the opportunity to build and/or physically
handle learning materials
• will take notes to keep busy but will not often
use them
• enjoy using computers
• physically express interest and enthusiasm by
getting active and excited
• have trouble staying still or in one place for a
long time
• enjoy hands-on activities
• tend to fiddle with small objects while listening or
working
• remember what they do and what they
experience in realtion to movement and touch
• enjoy using tools and enjoy lessons that involve
active/practical participation
• can remember how to do things after doing
them once
Most adult learners fall into the Kinesthetic category.
For these learners to best retain new information,
where possible they need frequent breaks to allow
them to move around and encourage them to write
down their own notes. Providing lots of handson
activities in learning, having product samples/
programs available for practice and giving them
the opportunity to demonstrate the procedures or
processes they are learning will help aid kinethetic
learners.
Although each adult learner is different, adults learn
best when training strategies combine visual, auditory
and kinesthetic approaches. Ultimately, adults learn
best by doing. Active participation, which can take
many different forms, is the cornerstone for both
the style of learning and the principles of adult
education. Active learning results in longer-term recall
and problem-solving skills than learning with verbal
instruction only.
A collaborative approach to any training will maximize
success and benefit everyone.
FLEXIBLE WORK ARRANGEMENTS
QHA REVIEW | 44
The National Employment Standards (NES), as set
out in the Fair Work Act 2009 (the ‘Act’), provide
certain employees the right to request flexible working
arrangements.
From 6 June 2023, significant amendments will be
made to the flexible working arrangement provisions in
the NES due to the Fair Work Legislation Amendments
(Secure Jobs, Better Pay) Act 2022.
The amendments to the NES will:
• expand the circumstances in which an employee
may make a request
• increase employer’s obligations to genuinely try to
accommodate a request
• provide for a new a dispute process in the Fair
Work Commission (FWC)
Employers will need to be familiar with new flexible
working arrangement provisions, as set out below,
and review their current practices to ensure they are
meeting their new obligations under the Act.
Who can make a request?
Section 65 of the Act provides that an employee who
has completed 12 months’ continuous service with an
employment may request a change in their working
arrangement if:
• they are the parent, or have responsibility for the
care, of a child who is school aged or younger
• they are a carer (under the Carer Recognition Act
2010)
• they have a disability
• they are 55 or older
• they are experiencing violence from a member of
the employee’s family
• they provide care or support to a member of their
household or immediate family who requires care
or support because that person is experiencing
violence from their family
• they or a member of their immediate family or
household is experiencing family and domestic
violence
• they are pregnant
Casual employees can make a request if they have
been working for the same employer regularly and
systematically for at least 12 months, and if there’s a
reasonable expectation of continuing work on a regular
and systematic basis.
Requests for flexible working arrangements
An employee’s flexible work request must:
• be in writing
• explain what changes are being asked for
• explain the reasons for the requested change
The NES provides examples of the types of changes
in working arrangements which an eligible employee
may request. For example, changes in hours of work,
changes in patterns of work and changes in location
of work.
Responding to requests
The amendments introduce a new section, 65A,
providing a more detailed procedure for how
employers must respond to requests for flexible
working arrangements.
Employers are still required to respond to requests
within 21 days. The new section 65A sets out what
must be done in that 21 days, which can be:
1. Accepting the request
2. Discussing the request with the employee to reach
a different agreement then what the employee
originally requested
3. Refusing the request.
Further information about option 2 and 3 are provided
below.

Sarah Swan EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS
Reaching a different agreement
If after a discussion with the employee where a
different agreement has been reached between the
parties, then the employer must set out the agreed
change to the request and implement it.
Refusal of a request
The new process for refusing a request first requires
employers to discuss the request with the employee
and make genuine attempts to reach an agreement
with the employee to make changes to the employee’s
working arrangements to accommodate the reason for
the request.
After this step, employers can only refuse the request
if:
• the employer and employee could not reach an
agreement
• the employer had regard to the consequences of
the refusal for the employee
• the refusal is on reasonable business grounds
Communicating reasons for refusal
If an employer refuses the request, a written response
must be provided that specifies the reasons for the
decision. This must include the business ground on
which the request was refused and how those grounds
apply to the employee’s request.
The amendments now require employers to set out
that the employee has a right to challenge the refusal
in the FWC.
Challenging the refusal
Previously, employees had no further avenue to pursue
if they wished to dispute their employer’s refusal.
From 6 June 2023, the FWC is now empowered to
resolve disputes about requests for flexible working
arrangements, where:
• the dispute cannot be resolved in the workplace
• the employer did not respond to the request within
21 days
• the employer did not give the employee a written
response
• the employer has refused the request and the
employee says reasonable business grounds do not
exist
If a party to a dispute refers the dispute to the FWC,
the FWC is required to deal with it by means other
than arbitration (such as conciliation, mediation,
making a recommendation or expressing an opinion).
If the dispute remains unresolved, the FWC may then
deal with the dispute by arbitration.
The FWC can make the following orders:
• if the employer did not respond in writing – an order
that the employer refused the request
• if the employer refused the request – an order
about whether the grounds should be treated as
reasonable business ground
• if the employer has not requested or adequately
responded – an order that the employer take further
action that the FWC considers appropriate
If the FWC is satisfied that there is no reasonable
prospects of the dispute being resolved, the FWC can:
• order the employer to grant the employee’s original
request
• order the employer to make changes to the
employee’s working arrangements to accommodate
the employee’s circumstances
If an employer refuses to implement orders of the
FWC, a civil remedy is available to an employee under
the Act.
QHA REVIEW | 46
When it comes to stouts,
I sit firmly in the imperial
stout camp – as they’re
brews that traditionally
feature notes of roasted
malt, dark chocolate and
dark fruit with a good
hit of bitterness. But life
is boring if you don’t
try different things, so I
occasionally venture the
way of a pastry stout,
which are considerably
sweeter, particularly when
it’s from Range Brewing.
This one is creamy, rich
and decadent thanks
to the addition of oats,
Tahitian vanilla beans and
toasted coconut.
A new-world Mexican
lager, brewed with malt,
corn and agave of all
ingredients. The agave
introduces a malty aroma
and a slight grainy taste
with a hint of sweetness
to it. As opposed to
honey, agave won’t
crystalize and maintains
a smooth, liquid-like
consistency. This is an
exceptional brew with
rounded mouthfeel and
a crisp, clean taste that
you expect from a quality
lager.
It’s easy to see how this
took home gold in the
2022 GABS Hottest 100
Craft Beer people’s choice
poll. Now in its 15th year,
there were 311 breweries
in the poll this year, with
2,140 different beers
attracting votes. More
than 60,000 registered
to vote, so that’s a fair
audience judging the
beer. It’s a classic pale –
tropical fruit to the fore,
delicate underlying light
bitterness and a very, very
subtle dank and resinous
mouthfeel and aftertaste.
It’s far from the status
quo.
Who doesn’t like a little
‘me time’ and if I had an
endless supply of this, I
would spend the rest of
my life in solitude. This
was friggin’ incredible. First
beer from Chur Brewing
and it most certainly
won’t be the last on the
quality of this offering.
This mosaic, single hop,
hazy IPA celebrates my
favourite hop (so I naturally
expected to love it) but
after a can it is bordering
on infatuation. A beautiful
big bowl of liquid mango,
pine and stonefruit is
all you need to get the
party started, no need for
friends.

There’s a lot going on
successfully melds two
renowned beer styles
to create a Belgian Wit
hopped like an IPA. It
is a marriage made in
heaven. The result is this
wonderful bitterness from
the Pilsner malts with the
orangey aroma and tang
with hints of banana from
the wheat, corn and oats.
These guys are purveyors
of liquid happiness. Every
time I venture down their
something special that
will bring a smile to my
in delivering great brews
with that distinct Helios
bitterness I have come
to love never fails to
disappoint. This rendition
was a super fresh fruit
bomb bursting with
stonefruit and tropical
fruit favours with a soft
mouthfeel.
This stout is so rich, sweet
and decadent it can only
be consumed in small
quantities for mine. Share
a can with a mate and
you will both comment on
how good it is and how
you wish there was more.
Have a can by yourself
and you will feel like you
have tucked into a jar of
peanut butter and a block
of dark chocolate drizzled
with Tasmanian double
cream in one sitting,
polishing them all off solo.
Don’t get me wrong, the
aroma and taste is out of
this world but perhaps at
times you can have too
much of a good thing.
This special release is
distilled and aged in
Panama. Rich notes of
roasted oak, coffee and
vanilla, with sweet toffee,
orange peel and a touch
of spice. This XO is aged
in bourbon barrels for 15
to 18 years and selectively
finished in white oak
sherry casks to achieve a
beautifully balanced and
endlessly sippable rum.
A CRAFTY BUNCH
GOING BALLISTIC
BALLISTIC BEER CO IS BACK BIGGER THAN EVER AND CONTINUING TO CREATE THE PERFECT
ACCOMPANIMENT FOR SOAKING IN YOUR SURROUNDS AND MAKING MOMENTS INTO MEMORIES.
QHA REVIEW | 48
Since the craft brewery was founded by two mates
who played rugby together in 2016, Ballistic has
earned a reputation for being one of Queensland’s
most beloved and award-winning breweries, with over
100 gold, silver and bronze medals to their name.
So when the company unfortunately went into
voluntary administration in January, it would be fair to
say it sent shockwaves across the industry. Thankfully,
existing shareholders and investors including
Catchment Brewing Co swooped in to lend a helping
hand and secure a thriving future for Ballistic.
CEO at Catchment Brewing, Matt Newberry, said the
community has been terrific in their support.
“The regular customers are back enjoying the fresh
new beers and the reinvigorated service via the
teams in the venues. We are getting a lot of positive
messages on social media and direct to the venues.
“Everyone is essentially saying how grateful they
are that the Ballistic brand was saved and that they
are able to come back and get good food, beer
and takeaways in our venues. Plus, it’s great that
customers still have access to a wide range of our
beers trading in over 2,800 of our retail bottle shop
partners nationally.” he said.

QHA REVIEW | 50
A CRAFTY BUNCH

A CRAFTY BUNCH
BALLISTIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN FOR MAKING APPROACHABLE, INNOVATIVE
AND WELL-BALANCED BEERS THAT EVERYONE CAN ENJOY...
As the new owners, Catchment Brewing has made
a lot of immediate changes including a reinvigoration
of the board of directors, the CEO and the leadership
team – all in the name of keeping Ballistic bustling and
in business.
Matt said they are working through filling other key
roles in sales, marketing, brewing, manufacturing and
venue management.
“We have been around to all the Ballistic venues
several times, met the teams and are working on
plans for each of the five venues to reignite sales
and marketing, customer activations and community
events with our partner LaLa Groups marketing
agency.
“The main brewing facility at Salisbury is also back
working at full production with fresh beer being
brewed, canned and kegged every day to fill the high
volume of orders we are receiving daily,” he said.
One of Ballistic’s many claims to fame is their cruisy
Reef range, which you will find scattered across
Central Queensland tourist facilities like airlines, cruise
ships and airports. Along with a chill Spotify playlist,
the range includes Ballistic’s Reef Lager, Pale and
Red Ale with 10 cents from purchase going towards
conservation and restoration efforts along the Great
Barrier Reef.
Along with their Reef range being brewed in large
volumes, Matt said their current focus is on providing
the volumes required for Ballistic Brewing’s Hawaiian
Hazy IPA and Pale Ale, plus their healthy low carb
brother, Lo Ha Pale Ale.
“We have a number of seasonal brews underway
including the popular Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout,
WaterMeLawn Watermelon Gose and a range of
barrel aged beers being aged and blended for limited
release.
“From a retail point of view we will be running a
lot of in store promotions to support our brands in
the near future. We are also currently working on a
brand extension for Ballistic. It is in its early phase of
development but watch this space,” he said.
Ballistic has always been known for making
approachable, innovative and well-balanced beers that
everyone can enjoy, so with the support of Catchment
Brewing and adoring fans around Queensland, it is
becoming very clear that is what they will continue to
do.
“Our values revolve around fostering and supporting
our local community and the industry, striving for
quality and excellence in our beers and in our venues,
seeking continuous improvement in everything we do
“Expect a lot of carpark events and activations,
A CRAFTY BUNCH
BUILT BY
MATESHIP
FROM A COASTAL GARAGE OPERATION TO ONE
OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST POPULAR INDEPENDENT
BEER COMPANIES, YOUR MATES IS CONTINUING
TO FOSTER CRACKING BEER AND MATESHIP WITH
THEIR NEWEST ENDEAVOURS.
QHA REVIEW | 52
Since we last caught up with the Sunny Coast
brewery last year they have been busy rejuvenating
a traditional bowls club that was going under and
turning it into the Your Mates BowlsPub – which is
definitely not your usual bowlsy.
After officially opening its doors in February, the
second addition to Your Mates’ venues combines
the excellent beers, food and lively entertainment
the brewery has become known for – with the
added fun of barefoot bowls and lawn games in a
family-friendly atmosphere.
When asked about what else they have been up
to, marketing co-ordinator of the brewery, Rob
Naylor, he said there is always a heap going on at
Your Mates
“We’ve been working through the expansion of
our production facility, with new tanks and a new
canning line massively improving our production
capacity and efficiency.
“On the retail side, we’ve just expanded the
capacity of the BrewPub with a new events space
– The Dreggs were our first band to christen it.

QHA REVIEW | 53

A CRAFTY BUNCH
“The BowlsPub has been building a really solid
following up in Cooroy and we’re looking forward
to holding the first charity event there for our new
not-for-profit, The Mateship Foundation, on 2 June.
“The Mateship Foundation is a big thing for us,
allowing us to really connect with and support our
local community through targeted charity support,”
he said.
Founded by a few mates over a couple of beers,
The Mateship Foundation was created by Your
Mates to foster positive social change and
championing mateship, inclusivity and sustainability
through actively contributing and engaging with
local communities.
SINCE THEN, YOUR MATES HAS HELPED
RAISE OVER $150,000 FOR LOCAL AND
QUEENSLAND BASED CHARITIES SUCH
AS REEF CHECK AUSTRALIA...
QHA REVIEW | 54
The foundation was unofficially launched by in
2019 with its first ‘Meats with Mates’ luncheon
event. Since then, Your Mates has helped raise
over $150,000 for local and Queensland based
charities such as Reef Check Australia, Young
Veterans, Surfrider Foundation Australia and LIVIN
through event fundraising and direct donations.
Rob said they are super proud of their connection
with the community and both of their Your Mates
venues, including The BrewPub at Warana and
The BowlsPub in Noosa Hinterland.
“We are getting stacks of 5-star Google ratings
for our tasty selection of craft beers, including our
rotating limited releases and our cracking food.
“There’s always something happening at both
venues with our weekly specials and events – we
usually have a major event on at each venue every
month.

A CRAFTY BUNCH
“We were super stoked to have The Jynx House in
addition to The Vanns and Sons of the East at The
BrewPub. We also have The Charity Super Roll for the
Mateship Foundation on 2 June.
“Our other venue, the Bowlsy, also has barefoot bowls
and lawn games every day, making it a fantastic family
friendly option,” he said.
Born on the Sunshine Coast in 2013, the Your Mates
story began with two mates, Matt Hepburn and
Christen McGarry. While discussing how they struggled
to find a beer brand they could connect with, the pair
came up with the idea for an independent brewery that
was non-intimidating for the social beer drinker.
One of the brewery’s most recognisable and charming
aspects is their collection of beers, as each can
features a character representing a different aspect
of the Australian outdoor lifestyle. Currently, the Your
Mates core collection includes their Larry Pale Ale,
Sally IPA, Eddie Session XPA, Donnie Dark Ale and
Tilly Ginger Beer. Rob said they are always working
on some new beer options and new additions to their
family of brews.
“Our GABS beer this year is a White Chocolate and
Macadamia Stout, plus we have a Rum-Barrel aged
stout which is a collab with another Sunny Coast local
producer – our mate at Sunshine and Sons Distillery.
“We’re really relatable, coming from humble roots of
two friends who just wanted to brew good beer and
have good times with their mates.
“Good beers, good mates and bloody good times
have always been at the heart of the brand and always
will be,” Rob said.
Reminder of remote self-exclusions for gambling
Licensees are reminded that remote self-exclusions
can only be requested through government funded
gambling help services and when the request is made
with the completed remote self-exclusion authority
and identification form, exclusion form 3A, a clear
digital photo of the person along with a copy of their
photo identification, then they must be accepted and
implemented at your venue. Following a receipt of
the aforementioned documentation from a gambling
help service, the venue is then required to complete
and return exclusion form 3B to the individual and
to the gambling help service via email and then
complete form 3G – register of excluded persons. If
a venue receives a request for exclusion which does
not contain all of the necessary documentation, or
the request is made from a third party which is not a
gambling help service then the venue is not required to
accept the exclusion at that point.
WINE
CLARE VALLEY’S KILLER DROP
KILIKANOON OWES ITS PHILOSOPHY TO FOUNDER KEVIN MITCHELL, HIS FATHER MORT AND THEIR FASCINATION WITH
TERROIR. THIS PHILOSOPHY HAS BECOME ENSHRINED IN THE WAY THEIR WINEMAKING TEAM CRAFTS VIBRANT WINES
WITH DISTINCT REGIONAL AND VARIETAL DEFINITION.
QHA REVIEW | 60
The diurnal temperature variation, hot days and cool
nights, in Clare Valley is key to creating powerful and
elegant wines, beautifully balanced with ripe fruit,
natural acidity, tannin and oak.
Despite covering a relatively small area, the numerous
sub regions of the valley exhibit individual microclimates
that particularly favour Riesling, Shiraz,
Cabernet and Grenache, while altitude variation from
300m to 600m results in vastly different terroir.
Mr. Killerman lived in a humble tin shed in the hills
behind Kilikanoon. He foraged through the Clare
Valley for his meals, finding wild rabbit and many other
gourmet treats.
Kevin Mitchell’s father Mort respected this man from
the bush, as they both knew the secrets of the rich
landscape. Killerman’s Run reflects the rich landscape
and being at one with the environment by sourcing
and blending wines from right across the Clare Valley
into a seamless, natural and uncompromising wine.

A classic, dry
style Pinot Gris.
Rich in flavour of
crisp melon that
is layered over
ripe lemon and
rich flavours are
balanced by a full
palate that is driven
by a firm core of
fruit. Fine oyster
shell minerality
structures the finish
and lingers.
KILLERMANS RUN
Shiraz 2020
Elegant red-fruited aromas
with hints of cherry, anise
and mixed spices.
Dense flavours of red and
dark fruits, blackberry,
sweet plums and a
peppery spice. The core
is concentrated and
focused, with a long and
savoury finish supported
by fine oak tannin. A
medium bodied shiraz
with flavour and finesse.
KILLERMANS RUN
and plum finish.
