Style Magazine - June 2023

This issue is bursting at the seams with wonderful ways to welcome the season of sweat and no school, starting with “Listen to the Music” (page 24), featuring a roundup of our region’s alfresco concert series (many free) whose venues (parks, city plazas, wineries, amphitheaters) are as diverse as the lineups. Bring a low-backed lawn chair, put on your dancing shoes, and get ready to move and groove under balmy, star-lit skies. Though we may not have the ocean at our fingertips, we do have refreshing rivers and reservoirs, plus plenty of public pools, splash pads, swimming holes, and water parks where all ages are invited to (safely) make a splash. Don’t miss “Dive Into Summer!” (page 54) for all the secret spots and must-do aqua adventures found ’round town. Just remember: The sun is your friend but can also be your enemy, so keep your skin protected by following the suggestions found in “Good to Glow” (page 36). On those true summer scorches, when the temps are simply too hot to handle, why not head inside to beat the heat? Turn to The 10 Spot on page 16 for air-conditioned activities that are literally and figuratively cool—from the mall, movie theaters, and museums, to indulging in the seriously scrumptious popsicles pictured on our cover. Speaking of summer-inspired sweet treats, if you’re hungry for more, check out page 96 for 10 refreshing recommendations, including a maple-bacon milkshake and sauvignon blanc slushie. Does all this chatter about ice-cold concoctions make you want to warm up? This month’s “Dining Out” article (page 92) brings us to Tao’s HotPot & Shabu, an interactive experience that’s “souper” hot (in more ways than one) and as fun as it is flavorful. Happy summer, and remember to stop and smell the (currently blooming) roses whenever and wherever you can; after all, life is beautiful but also precious. Cheers! —Megan megan@stylemg.com, @meggoeggowaffle

As we welcome the sixth month
of the year (how is 2023 already
halfway over?) and one of the
busiest (Graduations! Father’s
Day! Vacations!), I'm personally
processing that it’ll be the first
heavenly birthday for my dear—and dearly
missed—coworker Debra Linn.
While our STYLE family will never move
“on,” we’re all doing our best to move “forward”
and keep her spirit alive (see page 14 for a
donation drive her husband and children
put together in her honor). Ironically, June 21,
the day of her passing, also marks summer
solstice, aka, the official start of summer and
the longest, brightest day of the year. Maybe I’m
alone in finding the coincidence to be uncanny,
but I believe it’s Debra’s way of shining down
on us—reminding us to soak up as much fun as
we can this summer.
Luckily, this issue is bursting at the seams with wonderful ways to welcome the
season of sweat and no school, starting with “Listen to the Music” (page 24), featuring
a roundup of our region’s alfresco concert series (many free) whose venues (parks,
town. Just remember: The sun is your friend but can also be your enemy, so keep
your skin protected by following the suggestions found in “Good to Glow” (page 36).
not head inside to beat the heat? Turn to The 10 Spot on page 16 for air-conditioned
“The power indulging in the seriously scrumptious popsicles
the solstice
out page 96 for 10 refreshing recommendations,
is protective, including a maple-bacon milkshake and sauvignon
healing,
blanc slushie.
Does all this chatter about ice-cold concoctions
empowering,
make you want to warm up? This month’s “Dining
People & Places in the News
Four high school juniors and seniors received 2023 Young Artist Awards
at a reception at Placerville’s Switchboard Gallery. The four awards—
Richard H. Bush Award for Music, Joey Cattone Award for Visual Art, Lanny
Langston Award for Theater, and Jane Van Camp Award for Nature-Inspired
Art—went to Jayce Kaldunski (theater), Audrey Gupta (visual art), Audrey
Ewing (music) and Macie Douglas (nature-inspired art). Congrats!
Friends of Lakes Folsom & Natoma
(folfan.org), in cooperation with the
California State Parks Foundation
(calparks.org), broke ground on a
4,000-5,000-square-foot native plant
nursery, interpretive gardens, and
greenhouse at Black Miners Bar. Located
in a secluded area of the Folsom Lake
State Recreation Area where a ranger’s
residence is present, the “cottage” will
eventually be repurposed and renovated
to serve as an office with space for
meetings, small educational functions,
and storage. The project is scheduled
to take five years to complete.
Do you know a local senior who needs
a helping hand? Through August 1,
Folsom Community Service Day is
accepting applications for the “Neighbors
Helping Seniors Initiative”—a unique
category of projects that aims to help
local seniors who need assistance with
tasks like gutter cleaning, weeding,
pruning, painting, or other light exterior
maintenance. Find the application and
Approximately 90 members of the Folsom community gathered at Willamette
Wineworks to witness longtime resident and philanthropist Claudia
Cummings present a generous donation to the Folsom History Museum
(folsomhistory.org). Her gift will help support the construction of a 1,000-squarefoot
expansion (the “Claudia Cummings Community Pavilion”) to the museum,
in addition to allowing significant improvements to Pioneer Village and
helping to kickstart the Chinese Heritage Museum’s interior design work.
Folsom-based SAFE Credit Union
(safecu.org) awarded $20,000 to
Volunteers of America Northern
California & Northern Nevada
(voa-ncnn.org). The nonprofit plans
to use the grant to help fund its
transitional housing program, which
provides shelter and resources
for up to 80 veterans each night.
Annually, SAFE awards up to $120,000
in grants focusing on its three
pillars of philanthropy: veterans,
health care, and education.
Roseville Parks, Recreation &
Libraries—which manages 81 developed
parks, 300 acres of street landscaping, two
recreation centers, three libraries, three
pools, two golf courses, a Native American
museum, and 19 Adventure Club sites for
before/after school childcare—is one of
four finalists for the prestigious National
Gold Medal Award for Excellence
in Park & Recreation Management.
The winner will be announced at the
Beat the Heat
The
10 Air-Conditioned Activities
by CAITLIN MCCULLOCH
While we love warm summer nights, the intense midday temps
are often too hot to handle. Beat the heat with this list of cool
indoor activities.
Explore the
Westfield Galleria
at Roseville
Whether you want to make a
few purchases, window shop, or
simply get some air-conditioned
steps in, the Westfield Galleria at
Roseville (westfield.com/unitedstates/galleriaatroseville)
has it
all. There are over 150 stores to
choose from, but we have a few
recommendations: grab some
threads for the whole family at
Nordstrom, check out Round1
Bowling & Amusement (a stateof-the-art
entertainment center
that offers bowling, billiards,
private karaoke rooms, and one
of the largest arcades around),
and then head to Lolli & Pops, a
candy store that’s semi new to
the mall, for a sweet treat.
Have a Museum Day
Take in some local history
at Lincoln Area Archives
Museum (laamca.org), which
is open Tuesday-Saturday
and allows visitors to explore
Nisenan artifacts and learn
more about the region’s early
settlers and the history of
ranching, mining, and military.
If you go on a Saturday, the
Rocklin Historical Society &
Museum (rocklinhistorical.org)
will also be open. Both are
conveniently located within
20 minutes of one another,
traffic allowing! For little ones
looking to get the wiggles
out, head to the Sacramento
Children's Museum (sackids.
org) for a day of handson-play
with imaginative
exhibits like a magnet wall,
"vet office", and giant Lite
Brite.
See a Movie
Folsom’s Palladio
LUXE Cinema
(cinemawest.com) offers a
full bar, upscale food menu,
and plush recliner seats,
not to mention $5 matinee
tickets on Tuesdays; Regal El
Dorado Hills (regmovies.com)
has comfy seats along with
an IMAX theater option; and
Rocklin’s Studio Movie Grill
(studiomoviegrill.com) boasts
nine auditoriums outfitted with
the latest digital projection,
newly installed recliners, as well
as a full-service bar and lounge
with daily specials like $5 draft
beers on Tuesdays. Wondering
what to see? Ruby Gillman,
Teenage Kraken, and Spider
Man: Across the Spider-Verse
all hit theaters this month.
make it easy for you with convenient
Beat the Heat
Take a Swing
at Indoor Golf
If you haven’t checked out
the newly renovated Red Hawk
Casino (redhawkcasino.com),
this is your sign to do so. This
isn’t an adults-only gambling
recommendation (though that
would be fun too on a hot
summer night), but for the Apex
Golf Simulator (redhawkcasino.
com/golfing). When it’s too hot
to tee off outside, this is an
awesome alternative that’s as
close as it gets to the real thing.
Golf not your thing? No worries.
Hit up the go-karts, arcade, or
18-lane bowling center.
"Pop" Into an
Ice Cream Shop
‘Tis the season for deliciously
cold concoctions, aka ice
pops! While we’ll never say
no to anything sweet and
frozen, there’s something
about homemade popsicles
that is extra “cool.” Save
yourself the trouble of making
them at home, by heading to
Seasons 916 in Historic Folsom
(@seasons916folsom) for a
rainbow of fun, funky flavors
(many vegan!), like pineapple
basil, gummy bear, strawberry
cheesecake, Oreo, and more.
Catch a Local
Performance
Head to the Harris
Center (harriscenter.net) for
some indoor entertainment.
El Dorado Musical Theatre’s
The Best of Broadway (June
10) promises an evening
of Broadway’s biggest hit
songs, Motown Mania! (June
22) will feature hits from
The Temptations and other
Motown superstars, and the
El Dorado Dance Academy
is putting on their summer
concert Metamorphosis (June
24). You can also plan ahead
Rancho Cordova Barrel District
and get tickets for Disney’s
Descendants: The Musical,
which will be showing from July
8-16.
Explore the Rancho
Cordova Barrel
District
Enjoy some 21+ libations from
multiple locations in close
proximity at Rancho Cordova’s
Barrel District (barreldistrict.
com). Aside from two distilleries
(Gold River Distillery and J.J.
Pfister) and five breweries,
you’ll also find hard kombucha
and a meadery. You may briefly
be outdoors while hopping from
place to place, but the cool A/C
and drinks that await will keep
your spirits high.
Play Your Heart Out
Another day, (not) another
playground! On those extra hot
afternoons when the slides and
swings at your neighborhood
park are too toasty, head to
BusyKids (busykidsplay.com) in
Folsom or Roseville for some
indoor imaginative action.
Though the locations differ
slightly (Folsom’s features an
open café where adults can sit
and sip their favorite beverage),
both boast a whimsical,
hands-on miniature town
play area, free Wi-Fi,
enrichment classes like “Yoga
& Movement,” and more.
Go Ice Skating
While outdoor ice
skating is magical during
the holiday season, indoor ice
skating is just as fun—and often
very refreshing—in the summer
months. Head to Skatetown
Ice Arena (skatetown.biz) in
Roseville to cool off and get
some exercise in at the same
time. Visit their website to
make reservations and view the
summer schedule.
Make No-Bake Cookies
When you don’t feel like leaving
the house or turning on the
oven, no-bake desserts are
the hero of the day. Head
to our website (stylemg.
com) for the recipe to make
they'll meet and learn interesting
anecdotes about numerous animals.
which poses challenges such as “read
cross off 15 squares earn a free book.
The store also offers “Friday Freebies,”
in which kids can pop by the store for
a free advance copy of a book (while
supplies last). And both kids and
adults are invited to bring in photos
of themselves “caught reading” for
display in the store.
Ruby’s Books (rubysfolsom.com)
NEW Prescription
Weight Loss Medications
Wegovy • Ozempic
Rybelsus • Mounjaro
Want to know more?
Call us today and schedule an appointment to discover if
any of these new medications are right for you.
What’s all the chatter about?
They’re in the news, mentioned at the Academy Awards, by
talk show hosts, articles in The Washington Post, New York
Times, and Wall Street Journal. Perhaps this will be the year
that more people recognize that obesity is a disease and that it
can and IS being treated successfully.
Semaglutide, the medication marketed as Wegovy for obesity
and Ozempic and Rybelsus marketed for diabetes, and the
newest, tirzepatide marketed as Mounjaro are proving to be
a game changer for the treatment of obesity. Word has been
spreading like wildfire and they are flying off the shelves! It’s
no wonder when people are achieving 15-20% of total body
weight loss with continued use.
We are very excited to offer these medications at Hendricks for
Health and to safely use them (*marketed name brands only)
combined with our proprietary Hendricks Method program.
*We will not offer the compounded form of semaglutide.
Good to
Glow
Summer Skin Care 101
by MELISSA STRAND
Soaking up the summer sun for hours
can feel amazing. But along with all that
vitamin D comes plenty of concerns,
too—sunburns, sunspots, breakouts, and
clogged pores, to name a few—and the
need for a proper sun protection plan.
We asked skin care experts for ways to
welcome the warmer weather safely. Keep
reading for their top tips to keep your skin
glowing (and protected!) all season long.
SMOOTH IT OUT
Before you hit the sand or salty waves, get your scrub on! Heat, humidity, and sweat can
wreak havoc on your complexion. A gentle exfoliation of your body from head to toe will
remove dead skin cells that can trap oil and clog pores, freshen up your complexion, and
prevent dreaded summer breakouts. Myriam Liberman, owner and esthetician at The
Tiger’s Eye Skincare (tigerseyeskincare.com), suggests using “a gentle daily exfoliant and
alpha hydroxy peel, which can both be used to remove dead skin cells. The Tiger’s Eye
makes an exfoliant that has tiny natural beads and a peel with five natural fruit acids; both
products contain aloe vera to soothe and cool as they work.”
PROTECTION IS KEY
Make sunscreen your BFF all year long! Taking that extra step of
applying a quality SPF seems daunting when you’re gearing
up to head outside, but applying sunscreen before and
during sun exposure is essential to your skin’s health
and protection. “The number one product for all
seasons, but especially summer, is SPF! Proper
protection should be SPF 30 or higher and needs to
be reapplied frequently. Any SPF only protects you
for about two hours; and contrary to belief, you’re
still getting exposure indoors from windows,
overhead lights, and screens. Make sure you
protect your neck, chest, hands, and ears daily,
too. A good full-spectrum sunblock is key! My
favorite is Colorescience. They have liquid
and powder forms with full protection and
reef-safe formulas,” says Christine Carpenter,
lead esthetician and director of retail sales
and education with Destination Aesthetics
(destinationaesthetics.com).
LIGHTEN
UP YOUR
MOISTURIZERS
Let your skin breathe!
Warmer temperatures
can bring on sweat
and cause your skin to
retain more moisture,
which can lead to
dreaded clogged pores.
Stevenson suggests
“backing off heavy-duty
creams and switching
to lightweight gels and/
or moisturizing serums
that contain hyaluronic
acid or vitamin B5.”
LOAD UP ON
VITAMIN C
The same health benefits
we get from increasing
vitamin C in our diet can
be found by implementing
them into our skin care
regimen, too. “With more
outdoor activities and
gatherings, antioxidant
protection is high on my
personal summer skin
care list,” says Carpenter.
“They help to protect
against environmental
aggressors (such as smoke
and pollution) that cause
us to age faster. A good
quality vitamin C serum,
like Obagi’s Professional-C
portfolio, is a great way to
enhance your complexion
and protect against free
radical damage.”
Photo ©Vladimir Voronin - stock.adobe.com.
KEEP PRODUCTS CLEAN & GREEN
Your skin absorbs every product you put on it, so make sure it’s clean. “While many sunscreens
are backing off [from using] chemical additives, make sure you choose a clean, broad-spectrum
mineral sunscreen,” says Justina Stevenson, BSN, RN, LE, director of operations and an aesthetic
nurse at Entourage MD Skin & Wellness (entouragemd.com). Check labels and pay attention to
ingredient safety policies, such as chemical-free, cruelty-free, and vegan.
BALANCE YOUR SKIN’S HYDRATION
Protecting your skin with the proper tools can have long-term, lasting effects. According to
Carpenter, “A summer essential is a good hyaluronic acid serum. This will help balance hydration,
with a lightweight feel that’s perfect for warm summer days. SkinMedicas HA5 contains five
different types of hyaluronic acid, which is the same number our bodies naturally produce, to
perfectly hydrate, plump, reduce fine lines, and keep skin balanced.” Also, reach for water when it’s
hotter! Drinking water hydrates your skin and improves elasticity, helping to prevent signs of aging.
Fill up your reusable water bottle and never let your skin get thirsty this summer.
USE RETINOIDS IN
MODERATION
If you’re currently using
retinol-based skin care
products or are on
a prescribed retinol
medication and plan
to sunbathe, Stevenson
advises you “stop the use
of retinols or any vitamin
A derivatives.” Retinols
and retinoids can make
your skin more sensitive
to the sun, so decrease
their usage if you plan on
spending time exposed or
unprotected from the more
intense summer sun.
Take a Hike
Woods, Winnemucca, and Round Top Lakes Loop
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATED IN:
Kirkwood.
DISTANCE:
4.7-mile loop.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Moderate to hard (depending on snow
conditions).
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
With the ample amount of snow
last season, this may be a snowshoe
hike—even come summertime.
Check conditions, plan accordingly,
and dress appropriately for the
terrain and weather (layers, proper
footwear, etc.). Most people prefer
to do the loop clockwise. As always,
leave no trace.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
From snow-capped mountains to
superblooms, this trail boasts plenty
of beauty and connects to other
trails, too, offering the option to
backpack (a wilderness permit is
required for overnight camping).
Going for a cold plunge in warmer
temps is always enjoyable, too!
FUEL UP:
If you’re heading up on a Saturday
or Sunday, stop by The Market on
Main (@themarketplacerville) for a
breakfast of champions:
biscuits and gravy, a
“Bagel Bar” featuring
locally baked
sourdough bagels
alongside an array of
toppings, hot coffee from
Placerville-based Genesis
Roasters, and more. In
the mood for lunch
food? They also
serve an array of
empanadas, pretzel
bites, a chicken bake,
and more. Cozy up on their
cute patio and toast to small-town
charm and big-hearted hospitality.
4 Pros of
Trekking
Poles
➊
Prevent postholing.
During snowmelt
season, trekking poles
can be an effective way
to prevent postholing,
or stepping through the
snow and potentially
scraping your leg, or
worse, twisting your
ankle.
➋
Improve balance and
stability. By having two
extra contact points on
the ground, you can
prevent slipping on icy
terrain and increase
balance on uneven
ground.
➌
Reduce stress you
your knees. When
using trekking poles,
you relieve some of
the stress on your
knees and ankles by
distributing part of that
weight onto your arms.
➍
Increase endurance.
Trekking poles will
relieve stress on your
legs, which will increase
your endurance by
preventing fatigue.
Even more, they may
help your pacing and
bring some speed gains
over long distances.
One thing about California is you
can always count on needing
good sunglasses. As the sun will
shine no matter the season, your
sunglasses need to serve several
purposes; be it health and comfort
or seeing better when driving.
Here's my take on some of the
coolest specs around.
Randolph
Oakley
It’s hard to go
a day without
seeing someone
wearing a pair of Oakley shades. They’re the choice
of many athletes, and the brand is marketed in a
big way by sport. Featuring attractive frames and
optics, the sleek, lightweight Oakley Whisker
style is one of my favorites and available locally
at the office of Shawn McDonald, OD, in Placerville.
Ray-Ban
You’ve probably
owned a pair or
two of Ray-Ban
sunglasses in
your lifetime, and for good reason—because you
wanted to look cool. The downside of Ray-Bans
is they’re one of the most “knocked off” brands
in the world of sunglasses. My advice? Purchase
from a Ray-Ban dealer and be sure to try on the
Clubmaster Classic—they’ll take you right to
your inner Mad Men, ’60s self. They're sold locally
at Site for Sore Eyes in Folsom, El Dorado Hills, and
ASK THE
EXPERT
by BELLA NOLEN
Q: How can working with your
hands (gardening, crafting,
painting, grooming horses, etc.)
benefit mental health?
A: Working with your hands
gets you "out of your head" and
into your heart. Most people
overthink, and the thoughts
tend to be negative. Not only are
creative, hands-on activities a
great way to reduce stress, but
they can also help boost selfconfidence—by
giving you a sense
of accomplishment and power
over how you want to complete the
task. [Considering] a lot of people
struggle with not having control
over life’s circumstances, focusing
on hand-based hobbies (not the
electronic kind!) can compensate
for that struggle. As for grooming
horses, it can help people feel
connected to the animals and not
judged by them, which can relieve
anxiety and have a healing effect.
Dream
Backyard
Creating an Outdoor Oasis
by NELLY KISLYANKA
S
ummer and outdoor living are
synonymous. Whether you’re
wanting to entertain, eat al fresco,
or lounge around on a balmy evening, in a
perfect world, your backyard should be an
extension of your living space. But if your
yard isn’t ready for human occupancy—let
alone hosting—you might miss out on
some of summer’s sweetest memories.
That’s why we called in local experts for
their advice on taking a yard from rarely
used to the coolest place to be.
Embrace the indoor-outdoor
lifestyle.
A “California room” is an indoor-outdoor
extension of your living room, dining
room, or kitchen. It has three walls,
with the fourth open to the outdoors.
While most are attached to your home,
a freestanding California room is a
genius way to utilize an under-used spot
within your backyard. Whitney Critchley,
creative director at Terra Outdoor Living
(terraoutdoor.com), tells us to “think of
it as a semi-enclosed porch with all the
inside amenities you love: electricity
for appliances, chargers, entertainment
systems, a cooktop for meal prep, a roof
to shield you from the elements, and
comfortable furniture for lounging.”
HOW: Outfit your California room with
furniture that’s equal parts comfortable
and durable. Shop for weather-friendly
materials that can withstand the
elements and outlast the seasons. “At
Terra, we offer many collections that
bring the inside out with all weatherfriendly
materials—ideal for lounging,
living, and relaxing,” shares Critchley.
Install an outdoor kitchen for
open-air entertaining.
“Imagine being able to go outside in
the warm weather, invite a bunch of
friends over, and cook up a storm
while everyone comfortably enjoys the
evening,” says Tim Bell, general manager
at Capital Landscape (capitallandscape.
com). Outdoor kitchens are the
perfect addition for homeowners
who love hosting. They make outdoor
entertaining a breeze, and the cook
doesn’t have to miss out on the action.
The cherry on top? They can
increase your home’s value, too,
according to Bell.
Water feature photo Martin - stock.adobe.com. Group cheers photo DisobeyArt - stock.adobe.com. Hanging mosquito repellents plants photo Gorilla - stock.adobe.com.
HOW: Bell advises keeping
the size and constraints of
your backyard—as well as any
existing architecture within
the yard—in mind; otherwise,
you may end up with an
outdoor kitchen that doesn’t
flow well with the space. Rubi
Cornejo, marketing manager at
Advanced Pavers & Landscape
(advancedpaverslandscape.
com) advises homeowners to
“take the time to research local
building codes, obtain necessary
permits, and work with a trusted
landscape designer and contractor to ensure a successful
project.” In addition, choose a company/contractor that also
installs for a seamless design and build experience.
A visually stunning water feature is a treat for
the senses.
Cornejo loves adding water features into backyards for
ultimate zen. “A water feature can add a sense of tranquility
and relaxation to your backyard.” In addition to ambiance, it
also adds visual interest and a focal point to your yard and is a
conversation starter when entertaining.
HOW: When choosing one, Cornejo advises homeowners
“consider the maintenance required for each feature and select
one—whether it’s a fountain, birdbath, pond, or waterfall—that
fits your lifestyle.”
Prevent mosquitos for comfortable evenings.
As the stars come out on warm summer evenings, so do the
mosquitos. Planting mosquito-repellent plants throughout
your yard ensures you and your guests can enjoy balmy nights
without the swatting. Lavender, rosemary, and peppermint keep
the pests away while filling your yard with aromatics.
HOW: Bell recommends strategically planting mosquito-repellent
plants near all seating areas within your outdoor space. “You’ll be
far more likely to avoid bites throughout the year,” he says.
Plant a bountiful garden.
The colors and fragrance of a summer garden bring life to
backyard spaces. “A well-planned and maintained garden can
add beauty and function to your backyard oasis,” says Cornejo.
“Try incorporating raised garden beds, container gardens, or
even a greenhouse to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers.”
HOW: Don’t be afraid to get whimsical when designing your
garden! Use a variety of plants and textures to add depth and
interest; play with colors to bring a pop to the yard.
Light up your yard.
“Plan for adequate lighting to make your backyard enjoyable
both day and night,” Cornejo recommends. Twinkling lights
strung through the summer night sky are an affordable
way to illuminate your yard in the evenings, as well as
add ambiance to summer gatherings. If you love toasting
marshmallows, consider a fire pit; they provide lighting and a
hub for family and friends.
HOW: “I recommend researching and selecting high-quality
materials that are durable and weather-resistant,” Cornejo
says. Waterproof LED lights are the way to go for outdoor
lighting. If you like the coziness of a fire pit but not the mess
(or smell) of wood burning, choose an electronic or propanepowered
unit.
DIVE INTO
SUMMER!
by SHARON PENNY
Lake Natoma
It’s June! Time to evict the spiders living in your
deflated pool toys, dust off your kayak, don your
captain’s hat, and give the boat a power wash.
Before you know it, you’ll be unpacking the car
while sunscreening the kids, leashing the dog,
and inventorying the snacks while simultaneously
surveying the beach and calculating ideal umbrellato-shade
ratios; or maybe just sneaking out of the
house at 5 a.m. to enjoy a quiet swim or paddle.
This summer, why not freshen up your go-to water
destinations or maybe find some cool alternatives?
The good news is you don’t have to hit the same
crowded spot you always go to. You’ve got options!
Geographically, our region may be landlocked, but
there’s more swimming and water-based activities
than you could poke an oar at! We’ve scoured the
area for the best of the best: rivers for whitewater
rafting or lazy floating, lakes for boating and
fishing, public pools for swimming lessons, water
parks to get your splash on, and swimming holes
for (let’s be honest) re-living your youth. Whether
you have tots, teens, or are simply seeking a little
bit of serenity, we’ve got you covered.
Sacramento State
Aquatic Center
LAKE ESCAPES
Get your non-motorized water activities on
at Lake Natoma. All of them. From stand-up
paddleboarding and kayaking to sailing or
windsurfing, equipment rentals are readily
available from the Sacramento State Aquatic
Center (sacstateaquaticcenter.com). And if you
have a California fishing license, there’s plenty of
great angling to be had. Some good swimming
spots, too, but do proceed with caution as the
water is quite cold, even in summer. (Yes, even
you, fearless teens.) For families, check out
If you’re looking for a boat out on Folsom
Lake this summer, check out GetMyBoat
(getmyboat.com) the top boat rental booking
platform in California. It’s like Airbnb, but for
boat rentals and water experiences (and no
weirdos in the basement). Find great rentals,
including jet skis, for $100 or less! And if you
don't have boating experience (or if your
last trip was a three-hour tour that turned
into a long-running TV sitcom) don’t sweat
it: You can book captained charters with
professionals to handle the navigation.
Folsom Lake
*Black Miners Bar—a quieter
beach that’s ideal for kiddos,
kayaking, and swimming.
If boating, jet skiing, or swimming
is your aim, head to Folsom Lake
and just pick a beach. Some
are more suitable than others,
so here’s the hit parade in a
nutshell: Granite Bay Beach is
expansive and features a marked
swimming area and lifeguard,
landscaped picnic area, snack
bar with equipment rentals, and a
boat ramp; Oak Beach is located
further down from Granite Beach
and is perfect for kayaking,
swimming, and day picnics;
Beal’s Point offers a shaded
sandy beach, snack bar with
equipment rentals, landscaped
picnic area, campground, and
boat launch; and Brown’s Ravine
is home of the Folsom Lake
Marina (multiple boat launches,
marine provisions, and fueling)
and a small picnic area.
REFRESHING
RIVERS
The American River offers a little bit of
something for everyone, and you can take
that to the bank (pun intended). Here are a
few prime spots where you can adventureseek,
chill out, or do a little of both.
If you’re planning a local American River
float trip, try the 6.5-mile, approximately
three-hour journey that starts just under the
Sunrise Avenue Bridge at Sunrise Recreation
Whitewater rafting on the South Fork
of the American River
Cameron Park Lake is a fun hang in the
summer—whether your forte is fishing,
boating, hiking, swimming, paddling, or all
the above. Kick off summer right and enjoy
all that Cameron Park Lake has to offer at
Summer Spectacular on June 24—featuring
food trucks, live music, a kids’ zone,
fireworks, and live music beginning at 5
p.m. Visit cameronpark.org for tickets and
more info.
Auburn’s Lake Clementine is one of the
gems of the foothills. Stubborn folks like
yours truly are often skeptical of popular
spots, but Lake Clementine lives up to its
popularity through sheer scenic gorgeousity.
Like the Montagues and the Capulets,
it’s a house (lake) divided: Upper and Lower.
Lower Lake, and technically the “lake” proper,
is calmer and suited for boating, hiking, and
camping. Upper Lake, open seasonally, is a
great summer spot for swimming, kayaking,
and paddleboarding with pristine waters and
picturesque surroundings.
American River Raft Rentals
Kayaking on the American River near Nimbus Flat
Park and goes to River Bend Park in
Rancho Cordova. But don’t go rogue;
rent equipment and life vests from one
of the outfitters, like River Rat (river-rat.
com) or American River Raft Rentals
(raftrentals.com). And don’t forget to
apply (and reapply!) sunscreen and
wear a hat: “Lobster” is not a good
look on anyone except, well, lobsters.
Attention rafters: Your lazy river
floating odyssey begins at the Sunrise
Recreation Area. Both the Upper and
Lower areas are great spots to enjoy
the calm waters; or, if you have a valid
fishing license, you can make some
elbow room for an early morning
fishing trip. It’s also a great spot for a
picnic. Upper Sunrise, near the Fair
Oaks Bridge, includes a boat launch;
Lower Sunrise features trails and
nature walks and links to Sacramento
Bar via Jim Jones Bridge.
Auburn’s American River Confluence
proves that hanging out under bridges
is not just for trolls anymore. (In
summer, it’s a lot cooler in the shade
of the bridge, so maybe trolls were
onto something.) Located under the
Highway 49 bridge, this spot is known
for slow-moving water that’s perfect
for swimming or floating or just staying
put. Arrive early because the car park
fills up quickly. And like any river in the
wilderness, this is a rocky beach, so be
sure to bring appropriate footwear.
Nimbus Flat on the American River
is just a hop and a skip from the
Sacramento State Aquatic Center
and Lake Natoma, which makes
equipment rentals a snap. It’s a great
beach for family-friendly swimming,
stand-up paddling, kayaking, or a
well-placed floatie. Fair warning:
Arrive early to beat the crowds or be
prepared to teach your children about
disappointment.
Ancil Hoffman Park in Carmichael
is right next to the Effie Yeaw Nature
Center and the perfect place to access
the American River if you’re looking
for quiet paddling, a zen-kayaking
moment, or just dangling your feet
in the water and relaxing under the
spreading live oaks. Bring a picnic,
take the dog for a walk, have a nap.
Wake Island Waterpark
operating daily from 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
through October 15. Maybe this
summer we’ll invent the “splash pad
crawl”?
As of press time, the beloved
interactive fountain at the Fountains
at Roseville was undergoing
maintenance; keep an eye on their
website and social media channels
for updates. In the meantime, you
can get into the groove with the
dancing fountain or take a ride on
the train!
A WALK IN THE
(WATER) PARK
Wake Island Waterpark
(wakeislandwaterpark.com) in
Roseville is so big that it would get
an air guitar and a “whoa!” from
Bill and Ted themselves. Boasting
a jaw-dropping 80 acres and
self-proclaimed to be the largest
water park on the West Coast,
Wake Island has everything from
wide sandy beaches and cabana
rentals to cable (aka, boatless)
wakeboarding, a floating obstacle
course, ziplining, stand-up paddle
boards, a ninja racecourse, and
even human hamster wheels.
(Have we explored hooking this
place up to the power grid? Just a
thought.) Most of the action goes
through September 5; visit their
website for more info, passes, and
memberships.
Roseville’s Golfland-SunSplash
(golfland.com/roseville) is where
adults go to feel like kids again,
and where kids go to show adults
what youthful energy really looks
like. Whether you’re zooming down
the Zoomerang, ripping through
the Riptide, shooting down the Six
Chuter, hanging ten in the Thunder
Bay Wavepool, or getting lost in
floatie relaxation in the Bermuda
Triangle, there’s truly something for
everyone in this watery paradise.
And if thrills and adventure aren’t
your bag, there’s always hot dogs,
pizza, and “Iceberg Shakes”; oh,
and don’t forget all the great
“landlubber” activities like mini golf,
laser tag, and bumper cars!
WATER
SAFETY TIPS
1
Designate a Water Watcher
No matter how advanced you think your
child is at swimming, they must always be
supervised when in and around the water.
2
Know CPR
CPR is a procedure that everyone should
know how to do. You never know when
administering CPR could help to save a life.
3
Install Pool Fences & Barriers
If you have a pool, installing fences or
other barriers around the pool is highly
recommended, especially if there are
children near the area.
4
Limit the Use of Floaties & Water
Wings When Swimming
Throughout the “learn to swim” phase,
we highly recommend that parents get in
the water with their children during any
non-swim lesson time in the pool. This
is important, because it allows children
to learn to swim independently, without
the use of any flotation devices. These
devices create a false sense of security
and cause children to become dependent
on swimming with them. If a child falls or
jumps in a pool, it is important that they
know how to float and/or put their face in
the water, without the aid of a flotation
device, and swim to the side of the pool.
5
Enroll Your Child in Swim Lessons
The earlier a child enrolls in swim
lessons, the better. Swim lessons at an
early age teach children water safety
and water awareness skills. These skills
instill respect for the water and help
develop confidence. Students enrolled
in year-round swim lessons will achieve
developmental, physical, and social
benefits, as well as learn a life skill that
ensures a lifetime of safe, fun swimming.
NOT-SO-
SECRET
SWIMMING
HOLES
Word to the wise: Many swimming
holes in hidden, out-of-the-way
places are on private property, so
ensure you do your due diligence
and, as the TLC song goes: “Don’t
go climbing over fences to go
chasing waterfalls.” But Auburn
has a couple of legitimate
bangers, as the kids would say,
that are worth a visit.
Hidden Falls may be small,
but size isn’t everything when a
quick cooldown is all you need
in the dog days of summer; plus,
it’s a mercifully easy hike. The
gorgeous waterfalls along the
way will lead you to the pool on
Coon Creek. Note that parking
reservations are required on
weekends.
Clarks Hole is a gorgeous deep
swimming hole on the North Fork
of the American River, upriver of
the confluence. Fun fact: At the
turn of the century, before it was a
swimming hole, it was a municipal
swimming pool run by the city of
Auburn!
Steve and his son Kaleb, who was just graduating as a
in the business would allow them to meet demands and
Their expansion was an instant success due to their hard
work and amazing reputation in the area. In 2018, they
decided to further expand their business and open a
second location in Roseville. As part of this growth, they
brought on one of their longtime swim instructors, Mel
further their mission of teaching the life skill of swimming
Tao’s
HotPot &
Shabu
by RYAN MARTINEZ | photos by TAYLOR GILLESPIE
At first bite,
there was
something
special about
Tao's HotPot
& Shabu.
Perhaps it was learning
that the owner, Taobo
He, is only 29 years old
and inspired to share his
passion for his homeland's
food in Chongqing—
renowned across China
and the world as being
the mecca of hot pot.
Or maybe it was simply
his attention to detail,
the pristine display of
fresh ingredients, and
the fun of choosing your
own culinary adventure.
Whatever it was, Taobo's
“jump and the parachute
will appear” attitude
invigorates each dish with
a vigor, a hunger, if you
will, that adds a palatable
spice of life.
For those new to hot
pot, think of it as Asian
fondue where the cheese
is swapped for a delicious
broth, which is left at a
boil for the duration of
the meal. You then select
from a variety of raw
ingredients—ranging
from thinly sliced meats
to vegetables, tofu, and
noodles—and cook each
in the cauldron. When the
meal ends, you turn off
the burner and enjoy the
broth that has absorbed
all the flavors. Trust me:
It’s a fun, hands-on dining
experience, and Tao's
brings an authenticity that
our region will appreciate.
Only Tao's has a few
twists from the typical
adventure: Each diner has
an individual hot pot, so
I chose the spicy beef broth, the
signature flavor of Chongqing, with
Australian lamb, American Kobestyle
beef, shrimp balls, fish cakes,
and pork belly, plus noodles (both
soba and ramen). Each hot pot
quaintly served in a ceramic mug.
For drinks? A locally brewed IPA
from Device and plum and green teainfused
sake served cold. If you're a sake
fan, don't miss this unique offering, which
would also make a nice dessert drink.
While everything we ate was of
exceptional quality, there were a few
items that seemed a little extra
inspired, including the shrimp balls—
made fresh from whole shrimp.
The owner's recipe for a Japaneseinspired
shoyu sauce—which he
developed at home while trying to
find a perfect sauce for his meals—
was vibrant and unique, with hints of
wasabi and Thai chili. The Australian
lamb was also incredibly tasty, especially
when combined with said shoyu.
The food was fantastic, and the
experience was unlike anything you’ll
find anywhere else, including other hot
pot restaurants. If you’re craving a fun and
delicious meal, try it out. Your tummy will
thank you.
5003 Windplay Drive, Pacific Coast Pasta Co. began as a food truck rolling through
916-260-6560, in El Dorado Hills. The Italian-style deli has a menu to satisfy all
lunchtime appetites—from salads and build-your-own sandwiches
to gourmet sandwiches and pasta. Naturally, I tried a little bit of everything,
starting with the Salami Sandwich—stacked high on my choice of bread (marble
rye, of course!) and loaded with crisp veggies and cheese. My husband opted
for the Slow-Smoked Tri Tip Sandwich, which had saucy meat on fresh-baked
bread plus sautéed peppers and onions. My eyes lit up when I read “pasta bar,”
so I decided to build my own with Cheese Tortellini & Pesto, which was cooked
perfectly and topped with an ample amount of scratch-made pesto. We eagerly
dug into our sandwiches and then split the pasta, making for an extremely filling,
and mouthwatering, midday meal. But we weren’t done yet! I’m not one to pass
up dessert, especially Italian dessert, so I tried the Sicilian Cannoli. The
Fruity & Frozen
If you’re craving
something colorfully
different with a dash
of savory, you might
just be a lover of Flores
Munchies. Flores is known
for putting an innovative,
Mexican-inspired twist
on summer-approved
snacks. A prime example
is their Chamoy Lover
drink. Get ready because
this hot-day beverage
has it all. First, you start
with a 20-ounce cup
rimmed and slathered
in tamarindo chamoy
dip; on the inside, you
get your choice of fruit
freezes, including musttry
tropical flavors like
guava and pineapple.
And on top? Fruit bathed
in zingy Tajín alongside
your choice of gummy
candy. It’s a feast for the
eyes…and the palate. 6827
I Scream for Ice Cream
Sandwiches
The only thing we like better
than milk and cookies is ice
cream with cookies. The
team over at The Chocolate
Architect in Folsom couldn’t
agree more. Year-round, you
can enjoy their Chocolate
Silk Ice Cream Sandwich—
an all-ages dessert featuring
rich vanilla ice cream
and mini chocolate chips
pressed between two large
chocolate chip cookies. But
that’s not all. They then dip
the sandwiches in extrasmooth
"Chocolate Silk"
(pick from milk, dark, glacier
mint, or salted caramel)
and roll them in toasted
almonds, mint chocolate,
caramel bits, or crushed
Oreos. Grab a box for your
next pool party, and thank
us later. 250 Palladio Parkway,
A Korean Cool-Down
If you’re unable to go
abroad this summer, fret
not. The folks at Junni
K-Style Desserts will take
your taste buds on an Asian
adventure (passport not
required) with their Korean
dishes and frozen treats.
We’re currently crushing on
the Oreo Bingsoo, aka, Oreo
snowball. Every bingsoo
starts with creamy shaved
ice, but this one gets the
chocolate treatment with
heaps of crumbled Oreo
cookies, soft serve, and
chocolate syrup. They also
have red bean and fruit
options if you’re looking for
something lighter. Enjoy
your snow bowl indoors
while you listen to K-pop
and watch the crew make
fresh taiyaki (warm, fishshaped
cakes with sweet
fillings) at the counter. 711
“Shake” off the
Summer
Fill your seasonal need
for nostalgia with a trip
to Taylors in Loomis. This
old-school burger shack
features finger-licking
burgers and tasty fries, but
what makes it the perfect
spot to cool off are the
milkshakes. And Taylors
doesn’t mess around. They
have over 350 flavors to
choose from. Hankering
for a tangerine dream?
Try the Dory, a delicious
swirl of vanilla ice cream,
tangerine, passion fruit,
and blue raspberry. Or
perhaps you’re in a meaty
mood. Order the Maple
Bacon shake with vanilla
be it banana bread, apple
Do you prefer your desserts
spiked? Run, don’t walk, to
Poor Red’s Bar-B-Que and
belly up to the bar for their
trademark Gold Cadillac.
Poor Red’s invented this
classic cocktail back in 1952
for a newly engaged couple
that stopped by the bar.
The pair named the drink
after their golden Cadillac
parked outside, but the drink
also has a yellowish hue,
thanks to a healthy pour of
Galliano liqueur. If you’ve
never sipped on Galliano, it’s
an herby, vanilla-flavored
liqueur with a dash of anise
and nutmeg. Blended up
with crushed ice, cream, and
luscious crème de cacao, it’s
the perfect end-of-day (or
anytime!) drink. 6221 Pleasant
You Had Me at Ube
What’s ube, you ask?
Pronounced “ooo-bay,” it’s
a nutrient-rich purple yam
with a mild, sweet, coconutty
flavor that’s often boiled,
mashed, and incorporated
into desserts. Native to
Southeast Asia, it’s finally
made its way stateside and
is currently all the craze—like
in the Purple Rain offering
at Tokyo Cream—one of
Roseville’s hippest dessert
destinations. Vibrantly violet,
it features ube-flavored soft
serve (made using highquality
Hokkaido milk that
results in a creamier, richer,
and fluffier fro-yo), swirls
of ube syrup, and melt-inyour-mouth
milk cubes.
Striking a perfect balance
between sweet and nutty,
it’s a textural delight worth
indulging in. 1906 Taylor
Swimming in
It wouldn’t be a California
summer without a thirstquenching
Wine Slushie.
For this refreshing libation,
head to Sierra Vista
Vineyards & Winery.
This pioneer of foothills
vineyards isn’t afraid to turn
one of their award-winning
wines into a season-winning
blended cooler. So, what
separates this wine slushie
from the crowd? Sierra
Vista’s sauvignon blanc.
This white is the ultimate
summertime wine, thanks
to its crisp, light, and bright
mouthfeel. With every
sip of slushie, you’ll enjoy
aromas of citrus, herbs,
and even a hint of ocean
breeze. Slushie in hand, sit
Mango Margarita
Madness
Wish you were on a white
sand beach in Mexico?
Feed your fantasy with
a happy hour hangout
at Lola’s Tequila Bar &
Cocina. Lola’s is always
a “yes” in our book, but
especially when the
temperatures are high,
and all you want are good
vibes and good drinks. Our
recommendation? Order
your group a round of their
Mango y Chammizy—a
margarita that’s all things
beachy, tropical, and
fun. Cool down with their
ice-blended mango mix
and Cazadores tequila
reposado, all covered
in a generous drizzle of
chamoy and Tajín for a
kick. Before you know
Placer Food Bank (PFB), founded
in 1970 as the Community
Resources Council, has grown
from a small grassroots agency to the
leading advocate and food distributor
for hunger-relief in El Dorado, Nevada,
and Placer counties. They operate a
food distribution center in Roseville
that’s over 34,000 square feet and is
being expanded by 44,000 square feet
later this year.
An affiliate of Feeding America, PFB
is part of a nationwide network of 200
independent food banks securing and
distributing food and grocery products.
Being a member affiliate of Feeding
America, PFB is mindful about the
importance of its designation and the
high standards set by Feeding America
Staff and volunteers work to ensure
they follow Feeding
“Each day, our dedicated PFB team
and volunteers work diligently to uplift
our communities by providing access
to healthy foods for people of all ages,
genders, races, and ethnicities who are
impacted by hunger and the need for
food assistance,” says Dave Martinez,
executive director of PFB.
During 2021-2022, PFB distributed
8.1 million pounds of food to its over
70 hunger-relief partners and through
its PantryToGo free drive-through
distributions, serving 613,000 individuals
