As we welcome the sixth month 

of the year (how is 2023 already 

halfway over?) and one of the 

busiest (Graduations! Father’s 

Day! Vacations!), I'm personally 

processing that it’ll be the first 

heavenly birthday for my dear—and dearly 

missed—coworker Debra Linn. 

While our STYLE family will never move 

“on,” we’re all doing our best to move “forward” 

and keep her spirit alive (see page 14 for a 

donation drive her husband and children 

put together in her honor). Ironically, June 21, 

the day of her passing, also marks summer 

solstice, aka, the official start of summer and 

the longest, brightest day of the year. Maybe I’m 

alone in finding the coincidence to be uncanny, 

but I believe it’s Debra’s way of shining down 

on us—reminding us to soak up as much fun as 

we can this summer. 

Luckily, this issue is bursting at the seams with wonderful ways to welcome the 

season of sweat and no school, starting with “Listen to the Music” (page 24), featuring 

a roundup of our region’s alfresco concert series (many free) whose venues (parks, 

city plazas, wineries, amphitheaters) are as diverse as the lineups. Bring a low-backed 

lawn chair, put on your dancing shoes, and get ready to move and groove under 

balmy, star-lit skies. 

Though we may not have the ocean at our fingertips, we do have refreshing rivers 

and reservoirs, plus plenty of public pools, splash pads, swimming holes, and water 

parks where all ages are invited to (safely) make a splash. Don’t miss “Dive Into 

Summer!” (page 54) for all the secret spots and must-do aqua adventures found ’round 

town. Just remember: The sun is your friend but can also be your enemy, so keep 

your skin protected by following the suggestions found in “Good to Glow” (page 36). 

On those true summer scorches, when the temps are simply too hot to handle, why 

not head inside to beat the heat? Turn to The 10 Spot on page 16 for air-conditioned 

activities that are literally and figuratively cool—

spearheaded by experienced brewers 

and co-founders Amy Heller and Zack 

Frasher—is scheduled to open this 

month at 4480 Yankee Hill Road, 

Suite 100, in Rocklin and will offer 

“highly aromatic and flavorful hoppy 

offerings, bright lagers, eclectic styles, 

and an extensive barrel program.” 

Create a custom hat at Folsom’s newly 

opened Rancher Hat Bar (rancherhatbar.

Granite Bay Brewing Company (@gb_ 

brew_co)—which focuses on quality beer 

made in small batches with attention to 

detail—is open and pouring pints daily at 

8601 Auburn Folsom Road in Granite Bay. 

Community-owned natural foods grocery 

store Briar Patch (briarpatch.coop), which 

has been supporting a sustainable and 

local food system in the foothills since 

1976, is expanding to Auburn (2505 Bell 

Road). Slated to open in August, shoppers 

can expect fresh, locally sourced, 100% 

certified organic produce alongside freshly 

prepared foods, a “wine alley,” inside 

dining area, “cheese island,” and more. 

Tea Bar & Fusion Café (ilovetbar.com), 

aka TBar, is opening a 2,846-squarefoot 

location in Rocklin's Blue Oaks 

Town Center. Known for their tea-based 

beverages (frozen, frosted, sparkling, 

steamed, and iced options), as well as 

healthy fusion bowls and wraps, this will be 

the Northern California chain’s fourth café. 

Rocklin welcomed Beyond the Fig Wine 

Merchants (beyondthefig.com) to 5035 

Pacific Street. Open Wednesday- 

Saturday from noon-6 p.m., the familyowned 

shop sells almost 300 wines from 

around the world—many from unfamiliar 

grapes and regions—in a variety of 

price points (over half are under $30). 

Using small importers and distributors 

allows them to carry bottles not found at 

grocery stores or restaurants. In addition 

to online shopping and shipping (in 

California), they also have a wine club.

The world-class entertainment destination also features 2,000 slots, popular table

Global semiconductor manufacturer Bosch 

(bosch-semiconductors.com) is acquiring 

assets of Roseville-based chipmaker 

TSI Semiconductors (tsisemi.com) and 

expanding its business by making silicon 

carbide chips, which will enable electric 

vehicles to have greater range and more 

efficient recharging. Over the coming 

years, Bosch plans to invest more than 

$1.5 billion in the Roseville site and convert 

the TSI Semiconductors manufacturing 

facilities to state-of-the-art processes.

Four high school juniors and seniors received 2023 Young Artist Awards 

at a reception at Placerville’s Switchboard Gallery. The four awards— 

Richard H. Bush Award for Music, Joey Cattone Award for Visual Art, Lanny 

Langston Award for Theater, and Jane Van Camp Award for Nature-Inspired 

Art—went to Jayce Kaldunski (theater), Audrey Gupta (visual art), Audrey 

Ewing (music) and Macie Douglas (nature-inspired art). Congrats! 

Friends of Lakes Folsom & Natoma 

(folfan.org), in cooperation with the 

California State Parks Foundation 

(calparks.org), broke ground on a 

4,000-5,000-square-foot native plant 

nursery, interpretive gardens, and 

greenhouse at Black Miners Bar. Located 

in a secluded area of the Folsom Lake 

State Recreation Area where a ranger’s 

residence is present, the “cottage” will 

eventually be repurposed and renovated 

to serve as an office with space for 

meetings, small educational functions, 

and storage. The project is scheduled 

to take five years to complete.

Folsom Community Service Day is 

accepting applications for the “Neighbors 

Helping Seniors Initiative”—a unique 

category of projects that aims to help 

local seniors who need assistance with 

tasks like gutter cleaning, weeding, 

pruning, painting, or other light exterior

Approximately 90 members of the Folsom community gathered at Willamette 

Wineworks to witness longtime resident and philanthropist Claudia 

Cummings present a generous donation to the Folsom History Museum 

(folsomhistory.org). Her gift will help support the construction of a 1,000-squarefoot 

expansion (the “Claudia Cummings Community Pavilion”) to the museum, 

in addition to allowing significant improvements to Pioneer Village and 

helping to kickstart the Chinese Heritage Museum’s interior design work. 

Folsom-based SAFE Credit Union 

(safecu.org) awarded $20,000 to 

Volunteers of America Northern 

California & Northern Nevada 

(voa-ncnn.org). The nonprofit plans 

to use the grant to help fund its 

transitional housing program, which 

provides shelter and resources 

for up to 80 veterans each night. 

Annually, SAFE awards up to $120,000 

in grants focusing on its three 

pillars of philanthropy: veterans, 

health care, and education. 

Roseville Parks, Recreation & 

Libraries—which manages 81 developed 

parks, 300 acres of street landscaping, two 

recreation centers, three libraries, three 

pools, two golf courses, a Native American 

museum, and 19 Adventure Club sites for 

before/after school childcare—is one of 

four finalists for the prestigious National 

Gold Medal Award for Excellence 

in Park & Recreation Management. 

The winner will be announced at the 

2023 National Recreation and Park 

Association Conference in October. 

In honor of Debra Linn—associate

Soaking up the summer sun for hours 

can feel amazing. But along with all that 

vitamin D comes plenty of concerns, 

too—sunburns, sunspots, breakouts, and 

clogged pores, to name a few—and the 

need for a proper sun protection plan. 

We asked skin care experts for ways to 

welcome the warmer weather safely. Keep 

reading for their top tips to keep your skin 

glowing (and protected!) all season long. 

SMOOTH IT OUT 

Before you hit the sand or salty waves, get your scrub on! Heat, humidity, and sweat can 

wreak havoc on your complexion. A gentle exfoliation of your body from head to toe will 

remove dead skin cells that can trap oil and clog pores, freshen up your complexion, and 

prevent dreaded summer breakouts. Myriam Liberman, owner and esthetician at The 

Tiger’s Eye Skincare (tigerseyeskincare.com), suggests using “a gentle daily exfoliant and 

alpha hydroxy peel, which can both be used to remove dead skin cells. The Tiger’s Eye 

makes an exfoliant that has tiny natural beads and a peel with five natural fruit acids; both 

products contain aloe vera to soothe and cool as they work.” 

PROTECTION IS KEY 

Make sunscreen your BFF all year long! Taking that extra step of 

applying a quality SPF seems daunting when you’re gearing 

up to head outside, but applying sunscreen before and 

during sun exposure is essential to your skin’s health 

and protection. “The number one product for all 

seasons, but especially summer, is SPF! Proper 

protection should be SPF 30 or higher and needs to 

be reapplied frequently. Any SPF only protects you 

for about two hours; and contrary to belief, you’re 

still getting exposure indoors from windows, 

overhead lights, and screens. Make sure you 

protect your neck, chest, hands, and ears daily, 

too. A good full-spectrum sunblock is key! My 

favorite is Colorescience. They have liquid 

and powder forms with full protection and 

reef-safe formulas,” says Christine Carpenter,

are backing off [from using] chemical additives, make sure you choose a clean, broad-spectrum

nurse at Entourage MD Skin & Wellness (entouragemd.com). Check labels and pay attention to 

ingredient safety policies, such as chemical-free, cruelty-free, and vegan.

synonymous. Whether you’re 

wanting to entertain, eat al fresco, 

or lounge around on a balmy evening, in a 

perfect world, your backyard should be an 

extension of your living space. But if your 

yard isn’t ready for human occupancy—let 

alone hosting—you might miss out on 

some of summer’s sweetest memories. 

That’s why we called in local experts for 

their advice on taking a yard from rarely 

used to the coolest place to be. 

Embrace the indoor-outdoor 

lifestyle. 

A “California room” is an indoor-outdoor 

extension of your living room, dining 

room, or kitchen. It has three walls, 

with the fourth open to the outdoors. 

While most are attached to your home, 

a freestanding California room is a 

genius way to utilize an under-used spot 

within your backyard. Whitney Critchley, 

creative director at Terra Outdoor Living 

(terraoutdoor.com), tells us to “think of 

it as a semi-enclosed porch with all the 

inside amenities you love: electricity 

for appliances, chargers, entertainment 

systems, a cooktop for meal prep, a roof 

to shield you from the elements, and 

comfortable furniture for lounging.” 

HOW: Outfit your California room with 

furniture that’s equal parts comfortable 

and durable. Shop for weather-friendly 

materials that can withstand the 

elements and outlast the seasons. “At 

Terra, we offer many collections that 

bring the inside out with all weatherfriendly 

materials—ideal for lounging, 

living, and relaxing,” shares Critchley. 

Install an outdoor kitchen for 

open-air entertaining. 

“Imagine being able to go outside in 

the warm weather, invite a bunch of 

friends over, and cook up a storm 

while everyone comfortably enjoys the 

evening,” says Tim Bell, general manager 

at Capital Landscape (capitallandscape. 

com). Outdoor kitchens are the 

perfect addition for homeowners 

who love hosting. They make outdoor 

entertaining a breeze, and the cook 

doesn’t have to miss out on the action.

the yard—in mind; otherwise, 

you may end up with an 

outdoor kitchen that doesn’t

com) advises homeowners to 

“take the time to research local 

building codes, obtain necessary 

permits, and work with a trusted 

landscape designer and contractor to ensure a successful 

project.” In addition, choose a company/contractor that also 

installs for a seamless design and build experience. 

A visually stunning water feature is a treat for 

the senses. 

Cornejo loves adding water features into backyards for 

ultimate zen. “A water feature can add a sense of tranquility 

and relaxation to your backyard.” In addition to ambiance, it 

also adds visual interest and a focal point to your yard and is a 

conversation starter when entertaining. 

HOW: When choosing one, Cornejo advises homeowners 

“consider the maintenance required for each feature and select 

one—whether it’s a fountain, birdbath, pond, or waterfall—that 

fits your lifestyle.” 

Prevent mosquitos for comfortable evenings. 

As the stars come out on warm summer evenings, so do the 

mosquitos. Planting mosquito-repellent plants throughout 

your yard ensures you and your guests can enjoy balmy nights 

without the swatting. Lavender, rosemary, and peppermint keep 

the pests away while filling your yard with aromatics. 

HOW: Bell recommends strategically planting mosquito-repellent 

plants near all seating areas within your outdoor space. “You’ll be 

far more likely to avoid bites throughout the year,” he says. 

Plant a bountiful garden. 

The colors and fragrance of a summer garden bring life to 

backyard spaces. “A well-planned and maintained garden can 

add beauty and function to your backyard oasis,” says Cornejo. 

“Try incorporating raised garden beds, container gardens, or 

even a greenhouse to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers.” 

HOW: Don’t be afraid to get whimsical when designing your 

garden! Use a variety of plants and textures to add depth and 

interest; play with colors to bring a pop to the yard. 

Light up your yard. 

“Plan for adequate lighting to make your backyard enjoyable 

both day and night,” Cornejo recommends. Twinkling lights 

strung through the summer night sky are an affordable 

way to illuminate your yard in the evenings, as well as 

add ambiance to summer gatherings. If you love toasting 

marshmallows, consider a fire pit; they provide lighting and a 

hub for family and friends. 

HOW: “I recommend researching and selecting high-quality 

materials that are durable and weather-resistant,” Cornejo 

says. Waterproof LED lights are the way to go for outdoor 

lighting. If you like the coziness of a fire pit but not the mess 

(or smell) of wood burning, choose an electronic or propanepowered 

unit.

boat ramp; Oak Beach is located 

further down from Granite Beach 

and is perfect for kayaking, 

swimming, and day picnics; 

Beal’s Point offers a shaded 

sandy beach, snack bar with 

equipment rentals, landscaped 

picnic area, campground, and 

boat launch; and Brown’s Ravine 

is home of the Folsom Lake 

Marina (multiple boat launches, 

marine provisions, and fueling) 

and a small picnic area. 

REFRESHING 

RIVERS 

The American River offers a little bit of 

something for everyone, and you can take 

that to the bank (pun intended). Here are a 

few prime spots where you can adventureseek, 

chill out, or do a little of both. 

If you’re planning a local American River 

float trip, try the 6.5-mile, approximately 

three-hour journey that starts just under the 

Sunrise Avenue Bridge at Sunrise Recreation 

Whitewater rafting on the South Fork 

of the American River 

Cameron Park Lake is a fun hang in the 

summer—whether your forte is fishing, 

boating, hiking, swimming, paddling, or all 

the above. Kick off summer right and enjoy 

all that Cameron Park Lake has to offer at 

Summer Spectacular on June 24—featuring 

food trucks, live music, a kids’ zone, 

fireworks, and live music beginning at 5 

p.m. Visit cameronpark.org for tickets and 

more info. 

Auburn’s Lake Clementine is one of the 

gems of the foothills. Stubborn folks like 

yours truly are often skeptical of popular 

spots, but Lake Clementine lives up to its 

popularity through sheer scenic gorgeousity. 

Like the Montagues and the Capulets, 

it’s a house (lake) divided: Upper and Lower. 

Lower Lake, and technically the “lake” proper, 

is calmer and suited for boating, hiking, and 

camping. Upper Lake, open seasonally, is a 

great summer spot for swimming, kayaking, 

and paddleboarding with pristine waters and 

picturesque surroundings. 


American River Raft Rentals 

Kayaking on the American River near Nimbus Flat 

Park and goes to River Bend Park in 

Rancho Cordova. But don’t go rogue; 

rent equipment and life vests from one 

of the outfitters, like River Rat (river-rat. 

com) or American River Raft Rentals 

(raftrentals.com). And don’t forget to 

apply (and reapply!) sunscreen and 

wear a hat: “Lobster” is not a good 

look on anyone except, well, lobsters. 

Attention rafters: Your lazy river 

floating odyssey begins at the Sunrise 

Recreation Area. Both the Upper and 

Lower areas are great spots to enjoy 

the calm waters; or, if you have a valid 

fishing license, you can make some 

elbow room for an early morning 

fishing trip. It’s also a great spot for a 

picnic. Upper Sunrise, near the Fair 

Oaks Bridge, includes a boat launch; 

Lower Sunrise features trails and 

nature walks and links to Sacramento 

Bar via Jim Jones Bridge. 

Auburn’s American River Confluence 

proves that hanging out under bridges 

is not just for trolls anymore. (In 

summer, it’s a lot cooler in the shade 

of the bridge, so maybe trolls were 

onto something.) Located under the 

Highway 49 bridge, this spot is known 

for slow-moving water that’s perfect 

for swimming or floating or just staying 

put. Arrive early because the car park 

fills up quickly. And like any river in the 

wilderness, this is a rocky beach, so be 

sure to bring appropriate footwear. 

Nimbus Flat on the American River 

is just a hop and a skip from the 

Sacramento State Aquatic Center 

and Lake Natoma, which makes 

equipment rentals a snap. It’s a great 

beach for family-friendly swimming, 

stand-up paddling, kayaking, or a 

well-placed floatie. Fair warning: 

Arrive early to beat the crowds or be 

prepared to teach your children about 

disappointment. 

Ancil Hoffman Park in Carmichael 

is right next to the Effie Yeaw Nature 

Center and the perfect place to access 

the American River if you’re looking 

for quiet paddling, a zen-kayaking 

moment, or just dangling your feet 

in the water and relaxing under the 

spreading live oaks. Bring a picnic, 

take the dog for a walk, have a nap.

water park on the West Coast, 

Wake Island has everything from

wakeboarding, a floating obstacle

Roseville’s Golfland-SunSplash

No matter how advanced you think your 

child is at swimming, they must always be 

supervised when in and around the water.

CPR is a procedure that everyone should 

know how to do. You never know when 

administering CPR could help to save a life.

Install Pool Fences & Barriers 

If you have a pool, installing fences or 

other barriers around the pool is highly 

recommended, especially if there are 

children near the area.

Limit the Use of Floaties & Water 

Wings When Swimming 

Throughout the “learn to swim” phase, 

we highly recommend that parents get in 

the water with their children during any 

non-swim lesson time in the pool. This 

is important, because it allows children 

to learn to swim independently, without 

the use of any flotation devices. These 

devices create a false sense of security 

and cause children to become dependent 

on swimming with them. If a child falls or 

jumps in a pool, it is important that they 

know how to float and/or put their face in 

the water, without the aid of a flotation 

device, and swim to the side of the pool.

Enroll Your Child in Swim Lessons 

The earlier a child enrolls in swim 

lessons, the better. Swim lessons at an 

early age teach children water safety 

and water awareness skills. These skills 

instill respect for the water and help 

develop confidence. Students enrolled 

in year-round swim lessons will achieve 

developmental, physical, and social 

benefits, as well as learn a life skill that 

ensures a lifetime of safe, fun swimming.

Word to the wise: Many swimming 

holes in hidden, out-of-the-way 

places are on private property, so 

ensure you do your due diligence 

and, as the TLC song goes: “Don’t 

go climbing over fences to go 

chasing waterfalls.” But Auburn 

has a couple of legitimate 

bangers, as the kids would say, 

that are worth a visit. 

Hidden Falls may be small, 

but size isn’t everything when a 

quick cooldown is all you need 

in the dog days of summer; plus, 

it’s a mercifully easy hike. The 

gorgeous waterfalls along the 

way will lead you to the pool on 

Coon Creek. Note that parking 

reservations are required on 

weekends. 

Clarks Hole is a gorgeous deep 

swimming hole on the North Fork 

of the American River, upriver of 

the confluence. Fun fact: At the 

turn of the century, before it was a 

swimming hole, it was a municipal 

swimming pool run by the city of 

Auburn!

passion for his homeland's 

food in Chongqing— 

renowned across China 

and the world as being 

the mecca of hot pot. 

Or maybe it was simply 

his attention to detail, 

the pristine display of 

fresh ingredients, and 

the fun of choosing your 

own culinary adventure. 

Whatever it was, Taobo's 

“jump and the parachute 

will appear” attitude 

invigorates each dish with 

a vigor, a hunger, if you 

will, that adds a palatable 

spice of life. 

For those new to hot 

pot, think of it as Asian 

fondue where the cheese

exceptional quality, there were a few 

items that seemed a little extra 

inspired, including the shrimp balls— 

made fresh from whole shrimp. 

The owner's recipe for a Japaneseinspired 

shoyu sauce—which he 

developed at home while trying to 

find a perfect sauce for his meals— 

was vibrant and unique, with hints of 

wasabi and Thai chili. The Australian 

lamb was also incredibly tasty, especially 

when combined with said shoyu. 

The food was fantastic, and the 

experience was unlike anything you’ll 

find anywhere else, including other hot 

pot restaurants. If you’re craving a fun and 

delicious meal, try it out. Your tummy will 

thank you.

starting with the Salami Sandwich—stacked high on my choice of bread (marble 

rye, of course!) and loaded with crisp veggies and cheese. My husband opted 

for the Slow-Smoked Tri Tip Sandwich, which had saucy meat on fresh-baked 

bread plus sautéed peppers and onions. My eyes lit up when I read “pasta bar,” 

so I decided to build my own with Cheese Tortellini & Pesto, which was cooked 

perfectly and topped with an ample amount of scratch-made pesto. We eagerly 

dug into our sandwiches and then split the pasta, making for an extremely filling, 

and mouthwatering, midday meal. But we weren’t done yet! I’m not one to pass

Placer Food Bank (PFB), founded 

in 1970 as the Community 

Resources Council, has grown 

from a small grassroots agency to the 

leading advocate and food distributor 

for hunger-relief in El Dorado, Nevada, 

and Placer counties. They operate a 

food distribution center in Roseville 

that’s over 34,000 square feet and is 

being expanded by 44,000 square feet 

later this year. 

An affiliate of Feeding America, PFB 

is part of a nationwide network of 200 

independent food banks securing and 

distributing food and grocery products. 

Being a member affiliate of Feeding 

America, PFB is mindful about the 

importance of its designation and the 

high standards set by Feeding America 

and across the food bank network. 

Staff and volunteers work to ensure 

they follow Feeding 

America’s best 

practices. 

“Each day, our dedicated PFB team 

and volunteers work diligently to uplift 

our communities by providing access 

to healthy foods for people of all ages, 

genders, races, and ethnicities who are 

impacted by hunger and the need for 

food assistance,” says Dave Martinez, 

executive director of PFB. 

During 2021-2022, PFB distributed 

8.1 million pounds of food to its over 

70 hunger-relief partners and through 

its PantryToGo free drive-through 

distributions, serving 613,000 individuals 

and providing 10.4 million meals.
