The Laboratory of the Future: è questo il titolo scelto
dalla curatrice Lesley Lokko per la 18. Mostra
Internazionale di Architettura di Venezia.
Lesley Lokko, scrittrice, docente di architettura
scozzese con cittadinanza ghanese, ha selezionato
89 partecipanti di cui oltre la metà provenienti
dall’Africa o dalla diaspora africana per immaginare
e realizzare progetti per un mondo migliore,
più equo.
I temi della Mostra sono l’Africa, la decolonizzazione
e la decarbonizzazione.
La Mostra, strutturata in sei sezioni, inizia nel Padiglione
Centrale ai Giardini dove sono presentati
16 studi che rappresentano un distillato (Force
Majeure) della produzione architettonica africana
e diasporica, continua poi all’Arsenale con la sezione
intitolata Dangerous Liaisons (Relazioni Pericolose),
segue un complesso di circa 30 Progetti
Speciali suddivisi in categorie: Mnemonica che
esamina il rapporto tra memoria e architettura;
Cibo, Agricoltura e Cambiamento Climatico che
approfondisce la relazione tra cambiamento climatico,
pratiche territoriali e produzione alimentare;
Geografia e Genere che indaga il rapporto tra
genere, architettura e performance; Guests from
the Future presenta le opere di 22 giovani “practitioner”
africani e diasporici; infine vi sono tre Partecipazioni
Speciali presenti all’Arsenale: il regista
Amos Gitaï; il poeta architetto Rhael ‘LionHeart’
Cape, Hon FRIBA e il fotografo James Morris.
La mostra resterà aperta sino a domenica 26 novembre
2023.

The Laboratory of the Future: is the title chosen
by curator Lesley Lokko for the 18th International
Architecture Exhibition in Venice.
Lesley Lokko is a Dundee born Ghanaian-Scottish
architect, academic and novelist. She is the
founder of the African Futures Institute (Accra,
Ghana) in 2020 as a postgraduate school of architecture
and public events platform. In 2015 she
founded the Graduate School of Architecture in
Johannesburg. She has taught in the UK, in the
US, Europe, Australia and Africa. She is the recipient
of a number of awards for contributions to
architectural education.
The Laboratory of the Future is an exhibition in 6
parts with 89 Participants, over ½ of whom are
from Africa or the African Diaspora. The gender
balance is 50/50. The average age of participants
is 43, dropping to 37 in the Curator’s Special Projects,
where the youngest is 24.
“Central to all the projects is the primacy and
potency of one tool: the imagination”– Lokko
opined. It is impossible to build a better world if
one cannot first imagine it.
The Giardini’s Central Pavilion presents 16 practices
- a distilled Force Majeure of African and
Diasporic architectural production. The Arsenale
houses participants in the Dangerous Liaisons section
and these rub shoulders with the expanded
Curator’s Special Projects. At both venues are
young African and Diasporan practitioners – part
of the Guests from the Future - work develops twin
themes of decolonisation and decarbonisation.
Calling participants ‘practitioners’– Lokko states
– and not architects and/or urbanists, designers,
landscape architects, engineers or academics is
because it is our contention that the rich, complex
conditions of both Africa and a rapidly hybridising
world call for a different and broader
understanding of the term ‘architect’.
The exhibition runs from 20th May until Sunday
26th November, 2023.
