fabric with handspun cotton yarnHandwoven fabrics made with commercial cotton flake yarns and related

yarns like boucléHandspun yarns and commercial novelty yarns are highly popular today. New weavers are

arriving from the worlds of spinning, knitting and crochet, using frame looms, pin looms, rigid heddle looms

and shaft looms to weave their handspun yarn into fabric. I learned how to weave as a child using traditional

plain cotton and wool weaving yarns that are suitable for both warp and weft. Knowing the traditional

weaving rules for durable fabrics, I experiment with breaking those rules, thoughtfully, to showcase special

yarn in fabrics for clothing and accessories that are truly wearable and functional. Coming from the world of

tradition handweaving, with its emphasis on structure, provides a unique perspective on incorporating art

yarns into fabric.I’m a former spinner who has been learning to adapt to physical disability. I used to weave

with fine weaving yarn, thin handspun cotton singles yarn, and complex multishaft patterns, as well as

complex pick up designs including “painting” large motifs with freeform overshot patterns utilizing twills

and satin. Now I’m weaving with worsted to chunky yarn; I’m bundling my thinner stash yarns into warp

and weft ends with four or more strands. I’m buying supercoiled yarn, tailspun yarn and more from hand

spinners. Texture has become much more important, so art yarns are now more important to me. I’m

weaving simple twills and plain weave, both as pick up patterns and four shaft designs. I’m still weaving

clothing and wearable accessories, so I want my fabrics to be sturdy and (relatively) durable, without long

floats or loops or easily abraded sections that can catch on things when the item is worn.Art and novelty

yarns have long been used by modern weavers in the weft. I have tips for weft, such as custom sheds that

accommodate and display chunky supercoils prominently. I’m using yarns not traditionally considered

suitable for warp in my warps, too, however. Sometimes such yarns are the main warp yarn. First, I explain

some weaving techniques and weaving hacks I developed that both display and protect art yarn in

handwoven fabric meant for clothing and accessories. Then I describe more than 10 weaving projects in

detail, including my original weaving notes on materials, sett, width, length, sewing tips, and more.I do not

discuss traditional supplemental art yarn techniques, like brocade and the Theo Moorman technique.
