Transitional Kitchen

The original family room in Courtney and 

Taylor’s home was dated, with wood paneling, 

carpeting, a pool table, and no windows. A key 

consideration when renovating from top to bottom was 

creating a more spacious and bright floor plan that was 

functional for their family, which includes two children. 

The couple decided to transform the large family room 

into the kitchen of their dreams. 

“I wanted a place for us to gather for meals with not 

only our kids, but guests as well,” says Courtney. “I 

touched base with Beverly Wellington at Cabinetree 

early on in the process and she helped in planning the 

layout and designing the kitchen cabinets.” 

One of Courtney’s dreams was to have a large island, 

which is now the focal point of the room. At 10 ft. by 

3 ft., the island seats six as well as providing lots of 

storage space for a microwave and two large banks 

of drawers. The quartz countertops throughout are 

Silestone’s Eternal Calacatta Gold, which features 

subtle grey and golden brown veining - colours found 

elsewhere throughout the room. The Morning Dew 

island colour subtly contrasts with the Chantilly Lace 

perimeter cabinetry. 

The couple wanted extensive storage space to meet 

the needs of their busy family. Cabinetree’s custom 

cabinets showcase their best-selling transitional MDF 

door profile called Cosmopolitan. The cabinets are 

accented with champagne bronze handles that tie in 

with other warm bronze elements found throughout 

the main floor. 

To the right of the fridge are two-foot-deep cabinets 

with shelving to hold supplies such as toilet paper, 

paper towels, and sections for their mop and broom. 

On the left are pantries with drawers for the kids’ 

snacks and cereal to make them easily accessible. Small 

appliances are stored within the cupboards above.

“The cabinets and large drawers beside the back door 

hold BBQ supplies and other items we need in the 

backyard – it’s important to me to have things handy,” 

says Courtney. 

Finishing touches include a deep, double stainless steel 

sink, and a traditional champagne bronze widespread 

faucet with separate side sprayer. To the left of the sink 

is the garbage and recycling pull-out, a staple found 

in many new kitchen designs. On the left side of the 

stove is a pull-out accessory that houses their spices 

and oils, while trays and cookie sheets are neatly 

stored in the cabinet to the right. 

New windows were installed along the back wall to let 

in lots of natural light and allow the parents to watch 

their kids playing in the backyard. Glass globe lighting 

over the island contributes to the clear view. 

“Our new kitchen space is like night and day compared 

to what it was like before,” says Courtney. “It’s bright 

and airy with clean lines and abundant storage. I’d 

highly recommend Cabinetree for any project – they 

made the process easy from start to finish.”

Shain remembers hunting and fishing as a child on 

the property that his family has owned for many 

years on the Otonabee River north of Rice Lake. 

When he and his wife Debbie purchased the adjacent 

property about 20 years ago, they had dreams of one 

day building a new home there. 

“The property has lots of deciduous forest, with log 

homes on either side, one from the late 1800s and the 

other about 30 years old, so we wanted our new home 

to blend in with the environment,” says Debbie. 

When the couple met Jamie Henderson, Design 

Consultant with Discovery Dream Homes, at the 

National Home Show in Toronto and spoke to him 

about their vision, they knew they had found the right 

person and company to help them realize their dream. 

“We felt comfortable with Jamie’s approach and liked 

that Discovery was located nearby in Keene,” says 

Debbie. 

the modern Mountain View model, with tweaks such 

as spreading the house over a larger footprint and 

adjusting the position of the stair case, to have it going 

down instead of up. 

The exterior and trim of this unique four-bedroom log 

home is constructed from Eastern White Pine stained 

with natural tree oils with a roof covered in fibre glass 

shingles. From the road side, the home looks like it’s 

on one level, but as the property slopes down towards 

water, on the other side, you can see the two levels. 

Each floor has 1450 sq. ft. of living space for a total of 

2900 sq. ft. 

Jamie collaborated with the couple throughout the 

process. With all Discovery projects, the client can use 

Discovery certified builders, or can arrange for their 

own contractor. In this case, Debbie and Shain went 

with Discovery’s recommendation of Rob Moore of 

Rockwood Construction in nearby Warsaw. 

After Jamie showed them one of Discovery’s homes on 

Pigeon Lake, Debbie and Shain decided to customize

views of the river. Debbie and Shain love that they can 

walk in the front door and see through the windows to 

the outside. Naturally coloured curved timber accents

outside in.

Debbie and Shain are happy with the big, open space, 

where the kitchen, living and dining rooms flow into 

each other. They enjoy sitting on the couch to watch 

the sunset in the evenings. 

Interior design was completed in part by Abby Naylor, 

founder of Grace Interiors. Abby is a close family 

friend of Debbie and Shain, so helping them design 

their dream home was a project near to her heart from 

the beginning. Every design selection was intentional; 

from the choice of paint used on the kitchen island 

(Benjamin Moore, Feather Gray), to the earth-inspired 

brick selection for the fireplace surrounds. Abby’s goal 

was to create a space that blended the best of nature 

with modern functionality, all while honouring the 

family’s indigenous heritage. 

Facing the water with lots of natural light, the walk-out 

lower level has three bedrooms, a bathroom and a rec 

room. 

“One of the oak trees on our property was used to 

build the staircase,” says Shain. “It was nice to have 

some of the surrounding nature incorporated inside.” 

“I would highly recommend Discovery and Rockwood 

Construction any day – they inspire a high level of 

confidence,” says Debbie. “Our home is so bright, airy 

and comfortable all through the year. We can’t wait to 

get home to spend time there.” 

Discovery is known for its energy-efficient homes 

and this home is no exception. The home has a 

high-efficiency electric forced air furnace with air 

conditioning and in-floor radiant heating in the 

bathrooms. Blown-in blanket system (bibs) insulation 

was completed by Stevens Insulation in Millbrook, 

the company Debbie and Shain’s son Ryan works for, 

and spray foam insulation was installed in the ceiling, 

gables and basement walls to make for a well-sealed, 

air-tight four-season home. The logs themselves on the 


main level are their own insulation using a calculation 

of thermal mass efficiency. 

When working with clients, Jamie Henderson, with the 

help of the Discovery team, aims to make the building 

process a pleasurable experience, and is always there 

to answer any questions they might have. 

For over 40 years, this innovative custom home design 

and manufacturing company has been building homes

Kawartha Downs is thrilled to announce their 

best lineup yet for their outdoor summer 

events calendar. 

“Last summer was our first event season postpandemic 

and as good as it was, this summer will be 

bigger and better,” says Summer Nickerson-Hagen, 

Marketing Director at Kawartha Downs. She explains 

how Kawartha Downs has grown to be a destination 

entertainment venue for the whole family, offering a 

wide range of concerts, motorized sport events, weekly 

harness racing and new this year, their Kawartha 

County Fair. 

Kawartha Downs had been a harness racing and motor 

sports track for decades, loved dearly by those loyal to 

both forms of sport. The last two years marked a shift 

towards an expanding destination for summer fun that 

now includes concerts, fireworks and a wide range of 

new entertainment. 

The Kawartha Smackdown Demolition will take place 

on June 17 followed by live music from 4 p.m. to 6 

p.m. and harness racing at 7 p.m. 

“All of our motorized events, including the Monster 

Madness Tour and the Kawartha Smackdown, are 

thrilling events that bring a lively crowd to see a wide 

range of powerful vehicles,” Nickerson-Hagen says. 

Last year’s fan favourite was the Kawartha Country 

Music Festival on Canada Day weekend. 

This year, Country Fest has expanded to two days and 

includes an all-Canadian lineup that rivals any other 

music festival in Ontario. The Bailieboro hometown 

hero, Jade Eagleson returns to the stage on Saturday, 

July 1 followed by headliner Dean Brody and ending 

with jaw-dropping fireworks. Sunday, July 2 opens with 

rising country music star Sacha followed by the James 

Barker Band and The Reklaws musical duo. Tickets are 

available now on their website or at TicketWeb.ca. 

New this year will be The Kawartha County Fair which 

will take place on August 4, 5 and 6 with events every 

day. 

“We’re still finalizing our line-up for the fair, but it 

will include a tractor pull, a demolition derby and 

a concert,” says Nickerson-Hagen. “Our emphasis is 

on having something for everyone and to give the 

surrounding community a weekend they can look 

forward to each year.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience family 

fun at a classic midway, a variety of agricultural shows, 

their signature tractor pull on day 1, a demolition 

derby on day 2, a live music concert on day 3 and 

more. Saturday, August 5 will include a massive 

fireworks show at dusk as well. 

Last year, Kawartha Downs built a brand new, 

permanent pulling track that experts at the Ontario 

Truck and Tractor Pull Association have billed as “the 

best track built in Ontario.” The specially designed, 

400-foot track is made from carefully curated layers of 

clay and a robust draining system. 

On July 22 and 23 and September 2 and 3 will be the 

fan favourite truck and tractor pulls featuring the best 

competitors in Canada. This event was so popular 

last year that it ran until the late hours of the night, 

prompting Kawartha Downs to expand to two 2-day 

events on different weekends. 

Last year harness racing at Kawartha Downs celebrated 

its 50th anniversary, which continues to grow as a 

weekly event running from May 20 to September 23. 

Everyone is welcome to join in on the action and place 

their bets throughout the evening. 

“If you haven’t checked out harnessing racing at 

Kawartha Downs, I highly recommend coming for an 

exciting evening this summer,” Nickerson-Hagen adds.

While visiting Kawartha Downs, be sure have a bite to 

eat at their newly renovated Grandstand Dining Room 

overlooking the Kawartha Downs horse track. Open 

during dinner on harness racing dates, the restaurant 

has excellent views of the races from every seat in the 

house. Reservations are recommended for their buffet 

service dinner. Pre-event dinners are also offered at 

select events. All of their family-friendly events have 

free parking and take place rain or shine. Visitors 

are encouraged to check the weather and bring an 

umbrella if needed, along with a lawn chair.

...creates fun hangout space in bunkie 


Cheryl and Mark have recently taken over Mark’s 

family’s cottage on Buckhorn Lake that had 

been in the family for over 50 years. They 

were looking to make some updates to make it more 

accommodating for family gatherings. In particular, 

they wanted to refresh the bunkie/boathouse which 

had an unfinished upper loft area where they were 

hoping to add more living and sleeping space. 

“The bunkie/boathouse is about 18 years old and had 

an empty space on the second level, with a beautiful 

view of the lake and wrap-around decking,” says 

Mark. “We wanted to make better use of the space and 

thought it would be a great place for the kids to hang 

out and have sleepovers.” 

The couple had seen the work of Angela Jones, owner 

of Lakeshore Designs, on the Princess Margaret Dream 

Cottage she designed on Buckhorn Lake, and they 

were inspired to check out the projects on her website 

and on the Houzz app. They liked what they saw. 

kids and their friends. To that end, she designed three 

distinct areas – for sleeping, eating and games, and 

sitting. 

“To make the most efficient use of this space, we 

created a row of three custom single beds under 

the cathedral ceiling, with pullout trundle beds to 

accommodate six kids,” says Angela. 

Drawing on the boathouse below, Angela chose a 

nautical theme to create a cottagey, beachy vibe on a 

palette of blue and white with navy blue accents. Ship 

lap on the sloped ceiling, round nautical windows, 

seagrass, and a jute rug carry on the theme. More light 

comes in through the larger windows and a larger 

glass door that leads to a covered patio overlooking 

the lake. 

The snack and beverage bar boasts a sideboard with a 

fun, red retro fridge underneath, and a table to eat at 

or enjoy a game of cards.

their vision was to create a gathering space for the

In April 2023, quilled birch bark makaks (baskets) 

made by women of Rice Lake Village (now, Hiawatha 

First Nation) arrived at the Peterborough Museum 

& Archives (PMA) for an extended loan visit from the 

Royal Collection Trust in England, where they have 

been cared for since they were given to the young 

Prince of Wales in 1860. The makaks are the focus of an 

exhibition titled, “To Honour and Respect: Gifts from the 

Michi Saagiig Women to the Prince of Wales, 1860”. 

This exhibition unpacks the meanings carried by the 

makaks: the cultural knowledge that went into their 

making and their presentation, the cross-cultural 

diplomacy and expectations of Nishnaabe gifting, and 

the love, respect and hope that went into these gifts. 

By 1860, the women of Hiawatha First Nation were 

known for their skills as quillworkers, having won 

prizes at the local county and provincial fairs. Early in 

the summer of 1860 – in anticipation of the Royal visit 

– the Superintendent of Canada West, Central District, 

W.R. Bartlett visited most of the bands within his district 

to rally support for the occasion and to inform each 

community on what to prepare. It’s likely that Bartlett 

asked the women at Rice Lake to create quilled birch 

bark gifts for the Prince of Wales.

the Great Lakes region. The designs on the makaks 

displayed the women’s own Anishinaabek traditions. 

In all accounts of the Prince of Wales’ visit, women were 

absent from any official presentations. They were present 

as spectators, workers preparing luncheons and as dance 

partners at the public balls, but they were never at centre 

stage. Quite often, credit for Indigenous women’s work 

is unidentified in museum collections representing this 

period. It is therefore extraordinary to know the names 

of the women who created the quilled makaks as gifts 

for the royal visitor. We know this because the baskets 

were preserved with the names written on directly on 

them, on a piece of paper, or in some instances, quilled 

onto the birch bark. To learn more about them, we have 

used census records, village history, settler letters, and 

community consultation. We now know how old each 

woman was in 1860, allowing us to consider them as 

practicing artists with the benefit of life experiences, skills 

acquired over time and the recognition that they were 

passing on their knowledge to other women. 

“To Honour and Respect: Gifts from the Michi Saagiig 

Women to the Prince of Wales, 1860” will be on display 

through mid November 2023 at the Peterborough 

Museum & Archives. 

The baskets are decorated with both floral and 

geometric motifs, bringing together old and new 

designs, which reflects the changing experiences of the 

Mississaugas people of Rice Lake and more widely,

lakes and rivers. For some, boating presents a new 

challenge. Our mandate is to build boater confidence 

by providing educational information that touches on 

navigation, weather, safety equipment, rules of the road

Pleasure Craft Operators Card. Getting your card is

with instructors and other students and will benefit

important the everyone on board have an approved life 

jacket (PFD) that’s appropriate for your age and size.

times while underway because, statistically, PFDs save 

lives. We also undertake Recreational Vessel Courtesy 

checks to ensure that you have all the required safety 

equipment. Being prepared can prevent hefty fines 

from the OPP for missing equipment.
