YOUR DESTINATION FOR ENTERTAINMENT 

Kawartha Downs is thrilled to announce their 

best lineup yet for their outdoor summer events 

calendar. 

“Last summer was our first event season postpandemic 

and as good as it was, this summer will 

be bigger and better,” says Summer Nickerson- 

Hagen, Marketing Director at Kawartha Downs. 

She explains how Kawartha Downs has grown 

to be a destination entertainment venue for the 

whole family, offering a wide range of concerts, 

motorized sport events, weekly harness racing 

and new this year, their Kawartha County Fair. 

Kawartha Downs had been a harness racing and 

motor sports track for decades, loved dearly 

by those loyal to both forms of sport. The last 

two years marked a shift towards an expanding 

destination for summer fun that now includes 

concerts, fireworks and a wide range of new 

entertainment. 

The Kawartha Smackdown Demolition will take 

place on June 17 followed by live music from 4 

p.m. to 6 p.m. and harness racing at 7 p.m. 

“All of our motorized events, including the Monster 

Madness Tour and the Kawartha Smackdown, are 

thrilling events that bring a lively crowd to see 

a wide range of powerful vehicles,” Nickerson- 

Hagen says. 

Last year’s fan favourite was the Kawartha 

Country Music Festival on Canada Day weekend. 


This year, Country Fest has expanded to two 

days and includes an all-Canadian lineup that 

rivals any other music festival in Ontario. The 

Bailieboro hometown hero, Jade Eagleson 

returns to the stage on Saturday, July 1 followed 

by headliner Dean Brody and ending with jawdropping 

fireworks. Sunday, July 2 opens with 

rising country music star Sacha followed by the 

James Barker Band and The Reklaws musical duo. 

Tickets are available now on their website or at 

TicketWeb.ca. 

New this year will be The Kawartha County Fair 

which will take place on August 4, 5 and 6 with 

events every day. 

“We’re still finalizing our line-up for the fair, but it 

will include a tractor pull, a demolition derby and 

a concert,” says Nickerson-Hagen. “Our emphasis 

is on having something for everyone and to give 

the surrounding community a weekend they can 

look forward to each year.” 

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience 

family fun at a classic midway, a variety of 

agricultural shows, their signature tractor pull on 

day 1, a demolition derby on day 2, a live music 

concert on day 3 and more. Saturday, August 5 

will include a massive fireworks show at dusk as 

well. 

Last year, Kawartha Downs built a brand new, 

permanent pulling track that experts at the 

Ontario Truck and Tractor Pull Association have 

billed as “the best track built in Ontario.” The 

specially designed, 400-foot track is made from 

carefully curated layers of clay and a robust 

draining system. 

On July 22 and 23 and September 2 and 3 will be 

the fan favourite truck and tractor pulls featuring 

the best competitors in Canada. This event was so 

popular last year that it ran until the late hours of 

the night, prompting Kawartha Downs to expand 

to two 2-day events on different weekends. 


Last year harness racing at Kawartha Downs 

celebrated its 50th anniversary, which continues 

to grow as a weekly event running from May 20 

to September 23. Everyone is welcome to join in 

on the action and place their bets throughout the 

evening. 

“If you haven’t checked out harnessing racing at 

Kawartha Downs, I highly recommend coming 

for an exciting evening this summer,” Nickerson- 

Hagen adds. The official race calendar can be 

found on the harness racing page of their website. 

While visiting Kawartha Downs, be sure have a 

bite to eat at their newly renovated Grandstand 

Dining Room overlooking the Kawartha Downs 

horse track. Open during dinner on harness racing 

dates, the restaurant has excellent views of the 

races from every seat in the house. Reservations 

are recommended for their buffet service dinner. 

Pre-event dinners are also offered at select 

events. All of their family-friendly events have free 

parking and take place rain or shine. Visitors are 

encouraged to check the weather and bring an 

umbrella if needed, along with a lawn chair.

LANG PIONEER VILLAGE MUSEUM 

ONCE UPON A TIME… 

Those words often mark the start of a fanciful tale 

of a dream world. But what if they were the start 

of a story that seems so unlike today that it is hard 

to imagine it to be true, but it is? 

Once upon a time, more than two centuries ago, 

Peterborough County truly was a whole different 

place. There were no cars or electricity. Clothing 

was all handmade, often hand spun and dyed first. 

The only way to communicate with friends and 

relatives from away was through hand-written 

letters or making a long journey to visit in person. 

To purchase something from the store you would 

make a trade with goods like eggs or butter. It was 

unlike the world of the 21st century in many ways. 

At Lang Pioneer Village Museum, you can relive 

history and experience once upon a time for 

yourself. The 25-acre site is host to over 30 historic 

buildings and recreates a 19th century hamlet. 

Costumed interpreters introduce you to the 

people, trades and events that have helped shape 

local history as you visit homes and businesses 

from 1800 to 1910. At Aabnaabin Camp, discover 

the history and culture of the Michi Saagiig 

Anishnaabeg who first occupied the land and 

were impacted by settlement. Watch the tinsmith 

and blacksmith at work, smell cookies or biscuits 


aking in a woodstove, watch as wool is spun on a 

spinning wheel, or even carry water using a yoke 

and bucket yourself. 

Step back in time and enjoy an entertaining and 

educational day of exploration in the 1800s this 

summer at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. The 

Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday 

through Sunday from Father’s Day to Labour Day. 

Lang Pioneer Village Museum also offers a variety 

of special events throughout the summer and fall. 

The Museum’s event season kicks off on June 18 

with the 26th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam 

Show. Treat dad to a Father’s Day filled with antique 

tractors and steam engines for a day the whole 

family will enjoy! On July 9, the historic village will 

be filled with antique and classic cars and vintage 

motorcycles for the 26th Annual Transportation 

Day Car & Motorcycle Show. You can experience 

the charm of the village after dark with Village by 

Lantern Light on August 12. Making a return this 

year, kick off the start of the harvest season with 

some fresh fire-cooked corn during Corn Roast 

on August 27. The harvest celebration continues 

with the Museum’s most popular event, Applefest, 

taking place October 1. Discover the origins and 

traditions of Halloween with Historic All Hallows’ 

Eve on October 27 & 28. 

Get a head start on your holiday shopping with 

an indoor/outdoor Christmas Bazaar at the 

Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage 

Building on November 18. Finally, get into the 

spirit of the season with Christmas by Candlelight 

on December 2 & 3. Be sure to keep an eye on the 

Museum’s website for a new event coming in the 

spring of 2024!

Craft Operator card (PCOC) if you own a gas, 

diesel, or electric- powered vessel. This is where 

we can help you navigate a safe pathway at the 

beginning of your personal boating journey. 

We are a Canadian, not-for-profit boating 

organization offering courses and seminars that 

focus on safety and navigation skills. Since 1938, 

Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (CPS-ECP) 

volunteers have been sharing their adventures 

with new boaters ready to embrace this amazing 

lifestyle. We help prepare you for various waterrelated 

activities and enable you to respond 

effectively during emergencies. 

Your boating experience should always be

are available throughout our PCOC course 

material which you will find helpful in building

MILLTOWN MINI GOLF FAMILY FUN CENTRE 

A FUN & ENJOYABLE TIME FOR ALL AGES

For 38 years, Milltown Mini Golf Family Fun Centre 

has been offering a wide range of fun activities on 

two acres of landscaped park at 933 Lansdowne 

St. W., behind the Swiss Chalet in Peterborough. 

This family-oriented amusement park is a perfect 

place in which to spend some safe, outdoor fun 

for the whole family. Visitors can putt by two fish 

ponds, a working water wheel, and a running 

water sluice, all surrounded by beautiful gardens. 

To add to your enjoyment they also offer Batting 

Cages, Water Wars game with water balloons, a 

Paintball Shooting Gallery, Gemstone Panning, 

and a Treasure Hunt for real coins from around 

the world with an authentic metal detector. Enjoy 

yourself at the Paintball Target Range and see how 

many targets you can successfully knock down. 

Visitors can mix and match the activities, with one 

- two - or three-packs available at reduced prices. 

All equipment, such as golf clubs, golf balls, 

batting cage helmets and bats, paintball guns and 

contact area, and all gemstone panning contact 

areas are sanitized after each use 

"Our largest age group of customers are those 

between 14 and 24 years of age," says Barry Cross, 

owner of Milltown and he continues with " We've 

seen an increase in families during the last year 

looking for something fun to do with the kids that 

is fun and exciting where the whole family can be 

involved. 

Milltown welcomes birthday parties where visitors 

can bring their own food and cake and enjoy one 

of four Birthday Party packages offered. Birthday 

Parties can include a package or simply bring the 

kids for a game of Mini Golf. Many business have 

a fun event day at Milltown "its a great time to get 

employees together in a relaxed atmosphere" 

Milltown has been a family-owned business since 

1985. Their objective is for you to experience a fun 

and enjoyable time in a safe environment with 

your family and friends. The developer who owns 

the property where Milltown is located is planning 

on developing the location next year so this is 

probably the last year for Milltown

INTERWOVEN BASKET HERITAGE 

In April 2023, quilled birch bark makaks (baskets) 

made by women of Rice Lake Village (now, Hiawatha 

First Nation) arrived at the Peterborough Museum 

& Archives (PMA) for an extended loan visit from 

the Royal Collection Trust in England, where they 

have been cared for since they were given to the 

young Prince of Wales in 1860. The makaks are 

the focus of an exhibition titled, “To Honour and 

Respect: Gifts from the Michi Saagiig Women to 

the Prince of Wales, 1860”. 

This exhibition unpacks the meanings carried by 

the makaks: the cultural knowledge that went into 

their making and their presentation, the crosscultural 

diplomacy and expectations of Nishnaabe 

gifting, and the love, respect and hope that went 

into these gifts. 

By 1860, the women of Hiawatha First Nation were 

known for their skills as quillworkers, having won 

prizes at the local county and provincial fairs. Early 

in the summer of 1860 – in anticipation of the Royal 

visit – the Superintendent of Canada West, Central 

District, W.R. Bartlett visited most of the bands 

within his district to rally support for the occasion 

and to inform each community on what to prepare. 

It’s likely that Bartlett asked the women at Rice Lake 

to create quilled birch bark gifts for the Prince of 

Wales.

In all accounts of the Prince of Wales’ visit, women 

were absent from any official presentations. They 

were present as spectators, workers preparing 

luncheons and as dance partners at the public balls, 

but they were never at centre stage. Quite often, 

credit for Indigenous women’s work is unidentified 

in museum collections representing this period. It 

is therefore extraordinary to know the names of the 

women who created the quilled makaks as gifts for 

the royal visitor. We know this because the baskets 

were preserved with the names written on directly 

on them, on a piece of paper, or in some instances, 

quilled onto the birch bark. To learn more about 

them, we have used census records, village history, 

settler letters, and community consultation. We 

now know how old each woman was in 1860, 

allowing us to consider them as practicing artists 

with the benefit of life experiences, skills acquired 

over time and the recognition that they were 

passing on their knowledge to other women. 

“To Honour and Respect: Gifts from the Michi 

Saagiig Women to the Prince of Wales, 1860” will 

be on display through mid November 2023 at the 

Peterborough Museum & Archives. 

The baskets are decorated with both floral and 

geometric motifs, bringing together old and new 

designs, which reflects the changing experiences 

of the Mississaugas people of Rice Lake and more

NATURAL YET BEAUTIFUL. 

SHORELANDS CAN SURPRISE AND INSPIRE.

Did you know that a natural shoreline doesn’t 

have to be unruly or difficult to design and 

maintain? 

Ontario has an incredible amount of flowering 

shrubs and herbs that can provide a show of 

colour in every season. Our native plants are 

another country’s exotics and vice versa. Ontario 

has a lot to offer even the most discerning tastes. 

From wild roses, honeysuckles, to milkweeds, 

native daisies, and also iris. We also have 

dogwoods that dance in subtle angles in the 

wind, as well as many berry-bearing plants to 

entice and satiate our native songbirds. Native 

plants can remove excess nutrients, and they 

provide support for our native wildlife, from 

pollinators to birds, even amphibians and moose. 

Making the change to re-wild your shore is not 

only beneficial for our wildlife, but it is also easier 

than you may think. 

In fact, native plants are more resilient to weather 

changes and need less tending, watering or 

feeing than ornamental gardens that contain 

plants from another sphere entirely! Also, native 

plants can take a beating; they can be pruned and 

shaped without too much hassle or complaint. 

How to start? The best place to start, and the 

most important too, is right at the shore- the 

area where land meets water, also known as the 

riparian zone, is the area that supports the most 

wildlife; both aquatic and terrestrial species 

congregate in this zone and benefit from increase 

biodiversity here. Also removing any barriers 

such as rock walls and Gabion baskets, which 

offer sub-par erosion control to natural roots and 

soils is fundamental. 

An easy way to begin may be to simply stop 

mowing the area and see what seeds mother 

nature has stored away. You may speed the 

process by tilling the sod into the ground and 

even enticing more plants to arrive and establish 

by placing some bird-perches in the zone for 

our feathered friends to “poop” out a treasure. 

Otherwise, a start with a few colourful favourites, 

such as blue lobelia, swamp milkweed, turtle 

heads, and sweet-oxeye daisies. Gorgeous shrubs 

include chokecherry, serviceberry, dogwoods, or 

sweet gale. Best to avoid locally invasive plants 

such as exotic grasses and groundcovers that 

can overtake everything and reduce biodiversity 

and function entirely. Connecting your native 

gardens to existing natural areas is also important 

for wildlife to use as safe corridors. Each step 

towards naturalization is rewarded by songs of 

returning wildlife.

Located at the beautiful Ganaraska Forest on the 

Oak Ridges Moraine, the Treetop Trekking zip line 

and aerial game park has activities designed for 

everyone from aged nine to eighty-nine years

The zip line and aerial course tours are made 

up of exciting games and obstacles high in the 

trees, and include suspended bridges, Tarzan 

swings, balance logs, cable traverses and zip lines. 

There are six different aerial climbs ranging from 

beginner to advanced. Participants wear a safety 

helmet and a rock-climbing style harness that is 

always connected to a life-line.

come for a fun and exciting day outside,” says 

Mike Stiell, Marketing Director. “We have lots of 

seasonal promotions this year. On Father’s Day 

dads are free when accompanied by two others.” 

Sundays are “Fundays” with $10 off during May 

and June. And during July and August four or 

more people enjoy 25 percent off.

• comfortable clothing similar to what you’d wear 

on a hike: shorts and t-shirt if warm, pants and 

layers if it’s cooler 

• refillable water bottle and snacks (drinks and 

snacks are also sold onsite) 

• phone or camera to take pictures 

• tight-fitting gloves, such as fingerless cycling 

gloves 

• sturdy shoes with a good grip 

• backpacks or purses can be stored, with access 

between courses 

During April, May, June, September and October, 

they are open weekends and holidays, and they 

accept group bookings during the week. On the 

weekdays they are open for a larger group, they 

accept bookings for smaller parties that same day, 

call for further details. During July and August, 

they are open seven days a week.

Treetop Trekking is located just off Highway 

115 at Durham Road 9, 30 minutes south of 

Peterborough. It’s one of five locations in Ontario.

THE STORY OF BILL THE OAK TREE 

I’ve spent my entire life in the Kawarthas, 

watching farmers tend their land, children 

explore nature, and wildlife thrive. Have you 

ever stood by the water and listened to the calls 

of the loons, watched as a bird creates her nest, 

or witnessed the blanket of stars that covers the 

mid-summer sky? It’s a take-your-breath-away 

feeling that’s unlike any other. 

I have dedicated my life to providing food and 

shelter for wildlife and giving back to the people 

who own the property on which I live. It was a 

pleasure to watch the generations of this family 

grow, thrive, and take care of this land. I’m not 

the best with emotions, but I do know the feeling

property once the third-generation owners were 

ready to move on. I had watched these children 

grow into adults, work together to tend the land, 

and actively protect this habitat for all my animal 

friends.

I remember the day a team of people with 

clipboards and hiking boots came by. It was hard 

to tell if they were the new owners or developers, 

but as they got closer, I could hear their 

conversation about how they were planning to 

protect the land. 

Their hats bore an image of me on them and read 

Kawartha Land Trust. These people were talking 

about how the owners had donated the property 

to save it from other purchasers who might take 

away the natural features of the land. 

I was saved. My friends and I could continue to 

live our lives and flourish in the only place we 

have ever called home. My life was not over at 

72 years old. Because of this donation, this land I 

love will be protected. This selfless gift has saved 

my life.
