Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: The Mad Batter on Jackson Street inside the Carroll Villa
Hotel. The Kulkowitz family has been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner
for over 40 years. They also opened their new venture, The Cricket
Club, in 2022.
The drinks: We had the pleasure of our dear friend Mary Sexton
working behind the bar when we arrived, so we grabbed a few stools
and caught up a bit. Caiti, Nicole and Mary worked together for a couple
years at Cabanas, so it’s always nice to see her when we stop in. We
ordered a round of lemon-drop shots to celebrate our friend Jamie’s
McDowell’s 32nd birthday to start and then kept things simple the rest
of the afternoon. Dan had been craving a manmosa — orange vodka,
Allagash White wheat beer, fresh-squeezed orange juice and champagne
— so he sipped that while the rest of went for Surfside Peach iced
teas and a Tito’s and sprite. We caught the end of the Phillies game on
the TV across the bar and enjoyed our drinks while we waited — not
very long — for our food.
The food: Caiti mentioned The Mad Batter’s house nachos earlier
in the day, so we went running. The mountain of corn tortilla chips
topped with cheddar cheese, green onions, Pico de Gallo, fresh jalapeño,
roasted tomato and chicken was shareable and had just the right
amount of spice. Dan filled up on a cheesesteak and fries complete with
onions, horseradish sauce and aged cheddar cheese. Jess and Jamie
enjoyed some nachos with Caiti and Nicole, but also ordered chicken
tostadas with pico, sour cream, avocado and salsa verde along with
chorizo sausage paella.
The takeaway: The Mad Batter is known for its brunch, but their
lunch and dinner menus aren’t to be overlooked. They offer a variety
of dishes from burgers and paninis to vegetable ravioli and filet. They
also have a large vegan menu with plenty of options including seitan
“wings” and vegan crab cakes. They are open daily for breakfast and
lunch at 8am and dinner begins at 3pm.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
You may have heard that May 13 was
the 40th World Series of Birding —
the state-wide competition identifying
the most species of birds in
24 hours. The objective is to showcase
the natural riches of New Jersey and
raise money for bird conservation based upon
pledges on team totals. Many conservation
groups use the World Series as a fundraising
platform including local organizations like
the Wetlands Institute and Citizens United to
Protect the Maurice River and its tributaries.
Its raised millions of dollars over the course
of its history.
Participants come from across the United
States. One participant even flew in from
South Korea. Zeiss Optics, one of the event’s
perennial sponsors flew in two corporate representatives
from Germany and over 200 participants
dined at the Awards Brunch at the
Grand Hotel.
Mid-May marks the peak overlap period
between lingering winter residents like
Brant and White-throated Sparrow, breeders
like Orchard Oriole, and migrants like
Bay-breasted Warbler that are just passing
through. Typically, over 140 species are tallied
by all teams. Yes! All in NJ, which is
ecologically rich. In just three hours you can
drive from Canadian zone woodlands in the
north to a Coastal Carolina environment and
never leave New Jersey. In the north, teams
find breeding birds like Northern Goshawk
and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. In Cape May,
there are Royal Terns, Chuck-wills-widow,
Summer Tanager, and White Ibis.
Many teams are choosing to compete not
as full-state contestants but in the Limited
Geographic category. In the LGA’s teams
compete against an established par value
which gives teams in urban areas, like Essex
County, even footing against teams limiting
their search to bird-rich Cape May. This year
a Salem County team took top honors in
this category. A Cornell-based team took top
honors with a total just short of 200 species.
Me? My friend Don Freiday and I competed
as a Big Stay team, limiting our observations
to birds seen or heard from the hawk
watch platform in Cape May Point State
Park. Our total of 138 was respectable but not
enough to win. But the World Series of Birding
is not about winning. As Woody Allen said,
it’s about “showing up.” Anybody can play
and I encourage every Cape May resident to
join the fray next May. Go to the New Jersey

Is Indiana Jones too old for new adventures?
Does one more mission for Cruise
seem impossible? When did summer
become the season for overextended
sequels? Memorial Day weekend is the
not-so-unofficial start of the blockbuster
movie season, and there is plenty of action
and familiarity to go around! Here’s a preview.
In addition to Jones and Cruise, how
about a Barbie who walks and talks… and gets
booted from Barbieland? Well, get ready. Next
month, you can see Harrison Ford reprise his
most beloved role at 80 years old. Then in July,
Tom Cruise at 60 attempts his seventh Mission
Impossible installment. That same month, the
live action Barbie premieres.
Look, I’m not complaining — in fact, I
hope Ford and Cruise knock it out of the ballpark
(to borrow from another summertime
favorite). And what about Barbie? The trailer is
hilarious with Harley Quinn star Margot Robbie
as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. I’ve been a
big fan of director Greta Gerwig for years. The
films she’s starred in have been quirky and

fun with some success. She’s directed only
a few times, but they’ve gotten Oscar attention
with three nominations for directing and
writing. I’ve got high hopes! And I’m officially
a “heart hands” fanboy of popstar Dua Lipa,
who co-stars in this movie.
There’s no shortage of superhero and
action flicks this summer. Guardians of the
Galaxy, Volume 3, is taking off already. Fast
(and Furious) X is a fan fave but critics seem
less impressed. I’m pumped to see the sequel
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (the first one
was outstanding).
The Creator, an AI vs human sci-fi action
film looks scary! Technically it doesn’t come
out until September, but damn the trailer is
amazing. Next month, The Flash swoops into
theaters (he’s one of my favorite DC heroes).
Ezra Miller reprises the role he started in 2017

Take a good look at your summer space.
Chances are, the supplies you need for
fun in the sun have run low. Stock up!
Start with the big things — how’s the
furniture holding up? The unofficial
start of summer is also the unofficial start of
garage sale season — maybe someone is selling
the new kitchen table you need. Or maybe
you can find outdoor furniture, rewoven beach
chairs or repaired beach umbrellas. Garage
sales are also a great source for children’s
needs. Look for beach toys, sporting goods,
musical instruments, puzzles for rainy days,
family board games, even crayons. If you’re
hosting a summer-long guest, like a niece
with her first job, upgrade her space with a
comfy reading chair or small lamp.
Is there propane for the grill? Need a
new water filter? Assess your oils, spices and
condiments. Refrigerator space is always at
a premium, but buy items like coffee, sugar,
pancake mix, pasta, and clam juice. With a
well-stocked cupboard, you can make dinner
with a trip to the Lobster House fish market
or a farm stand, saving you a summer afternoon
in a crowded supermarket. Make an
impromptu party with shelf-stable treats like
popcorn, sprinkles and ice cream cones, cake
mix and birthday candles for the Cancers,
Leos and Virgos of your acquaintance.
How are your sheets and towels holding
up? You may be able to donate worn items
to an animal shelter while you treat yourself
to fluffy towels, perky pillows, and smooth
sheets. Are there adequate cleaning and laundry
supplies? Do you have an iron and ironing
board? Are the batteries in your smoke and
carbon-monoxide detectors fresh? Do you
have flashlights and back-up batteries in case
of a summer storm? Don’t forget the toilet
paper, and maybe a fresh plunger.
If company is coming, consider an air
bed, along with ear plugs or eye masks for
those who hope to sleep through the morning
hubbub. Get an extra phone charger or two
and keep a drawer of left-behind items like
bathing suits, tee shirts and rash guards — the
next guest may forget something. Stock the
first-aid kit with bandages, antibiotic ointment,
Benadryl tablets, stomach medicine
and aloe. Don’t forget rubbing alcohol for
sanitizing and for swimmer’s ear. Refresh
your sunscreen supply — according to the
Cleveland Clinic, sunscreen can last three
years in a cool, dry area, but your beach bag is
not a cool, dry area. Don’t forget an updated
Cape May map and the latest issues of This
Week in Cape May and Exit Zero.

our married daughter and her husband were
also planning on a personal vacation trip this

our grandkids while they were gone. Well they
canceled, so my daughter asked US to watch
them. Normally we would, but the dates of
their trip conflict with my niece’s wedding.
I’ve asked her to consider changing the dates
of her trip, but she’s unable (or unwilling) to
try that. My husband thinks we should put our
daughter first and cancel our plans and watch
their kids. I see this as an obligation we’ve
already accepted and promised my sister, and

honoring your first commitment. It should not
be an automatic imperative that grandparents
are obligated to be at the beck and call of plans

awry. Would you have made such a demand
on your parents? If you think you can take the
kiddies to the wedding and secure someone
to watch them while the festivities are going
on, that might be a compromise. Barring that,
changing everything seems a precedent you
might not want to set. Discuss it with your
husband over a refreshing cocktail at Fins.

I am 12 years old, and my parents still
won’t let me have a smart phone. I even took
them to Delaney’s with my babysitting money
to plead with them. They still said no. I am
very responsible, and I don’t understand their
attitude. I am the only one in my class without
one and I think I am suffering from PTSD

do not have PTSD. She can also assure you that
your parents are very wise. A smart phone is
not always appropriately named. Why not
pitch them for a flip phone? The less smart

COOPER is an energetic boy who loves to
splash around in the pool. He has excellent
leash skills and is a people-pleaser. Cooper
lived with children previously, but needs to
be the only pet in his new home. He is cratetrained
which will help with his transition. He
is also up to date on all vaccinations, neutered
and housetrained.
KOBO is a three-year old hound mix who
came to the shelter when his owner could no
longer care for him. He’s a happy and healthy
pup who loves people. Kobo has excellent
leash skills and checks back in with his human
often. He needs a slow introduction to other
dogs and cats but will adjust fine. Please welcome
this loyal companion into your home.
DIXIE is a beautiful four-year-old redbone
coonhound who came to the shelter when her
owners couldn’t keep her. She loves to go on
walks and has wonderful leash manners. Dixie
can become vocal when she wants attention
and is very curious. She has lived with children
and is dog social, but a slow introduction
with any cats is best.

to the shelter from a hoarder house. Gucci was

GRETA came to the shelter from a hoarder
house. This 10-month-old girl was kept in a

positive and happy cats from the home, but
don’t pick her up. She will need to be slowly

patience and practice. Greta deserves a loving

CANDY is a two-year-old girl who came to
the shelter when her caregiver passed away.
She was in need of extra TLC when she arrived
but is now thriving. Candy would do well in a
home with other cats and dogs — she will also
take care of any unwanted mice she sees. She
is a friendly and gentle kitty who is ready to
