From Our Pastor

Dear St. Robert Parishioners,

My first year as pastor at St. Robert’s has flown by very quickly. I have learned so much

from visiting and getting to know many of you over the last 12 months. It has been great

to meet so many amazing and dedicated parishioners this past year and I am looking

forward to meeting many more of you in the future.

I am very blessed to have a wonderful, hardworking, and very missional staff to support all

the many ministries and organizations here at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. This is a very

active and engaging parish and I never expected my first year to be so busy, but I know

I am up for the challenge and I am getting up to speed quickly with all the help from the

staff and parish leadership.

Welcome!

As I started attending the many leadership meetings and the varied organizations and

committees, I got a huge sense of the numerous people who make this parish a very

special place for so many. I see founding members of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish are

now seeing their grandchildren attending our parish, school and/or religious education

programs. Many parishioners feel this parish community is an extension of their family

and they have created many great friendships and bonds with one another. These

long lasting relationships create an environment and a sense of belonging. I see many

parishioners go forth in our community sharing God’s gifts with one another and those

outside our parish community as well.

As we move towards 2022-2023, I look forward to meeting many more of you and I am

excited about our future! Exciting goals and activities are on the horizon as we work

on the Archbishop’s vision with our family parishes, Christ the King and John Paul II

Newman Center, on the Journey of Faith program. I am eager for the Archbishop’s visit

in early November sharing the many exciting ministries, activities, and the whole parish

community. I look forward to celebrating the holidays and sacraments with our dynamic

community. I am delighted to be here and thank you for making me feel welcomed and

at home at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish.

Parish Council

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

We have a great parish! This is what I tell family and friends when they ask about St.

Robert Bellarmine. As my family and I were relocating back to Omaha in the early ‘90s,

we were searching for a parish close to our new home. Performing our due diligence,

we checked out numerous parishes in the west Omaha area. When we attended a

Mass at St. Robert’s it felt right, just like my childhood parish. It still feels that way today.

The “greatness” of our parish is due to the selfless dedication of our clergy, educators,

staff, and volunteers. When you take the time to think about how many volunteers it

requires to support a parish as large and dynamic as ours, it will impress you.

Our Parish Council is heavily involved in volunteerism. All twelve members are engaged

in benevolent roles outside of their work on the Parish Council. For example, we are

coaches, educators, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, sacristans,

money counters, nocturnal and perpetual adorers, adult servers, musicians, and leaders

of numerous parish organizations and events.

Keeping a relatively new tradition alive during the Advent season, the Parish Council

once again connected with our senior parishioners. Two-thirds of our council members

contacted over 260 parishioners. During these conversations, we checked on their

overall welfare, thanked them for their ongoing support of the parish, provided them with

information, and offered them an opportunity to include their special intentions during

Christmas Masses. It was a rewarding experience for the Parish Council volunteers as well

as those parishioners on the receiving end of the calls.

Whether you are a founding member, new to our parish, or somewhere in-between,

we welcome your time and talent. All it takes is one call to our parish office and a parish

BELLA FESTA TITHE RECIPIENTS

Since 2005, Bella Festa/Shine has donated 10% of the events net proceeds to a nonprofit

organization with a connection to St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. The Parish Council reviews

applications and recommendations are given to the pastor. To date over $325,000 has been

awarded to over 32 organizations. The nonprofits listed below will be awarded the following:

St. Robert’s is a parish with a rich history and bright future. Since our inception, perpetual

adoration has been prominent, our Blue Ribbon School shows academic excellence, and we

are one of two schools in the archdiocese to partner with Madonna for our school Inclusion

Program. We see multi-generational families attending our school, church services, volunteering,

and taking on leadership roles. Our parish can help each other grow in our faith journey well

into the future.

up and

worked on

the campus.

This year we held our first “barn raising”. (We didn’t actually build a barn, but were asked many

times, “Are we building a barn?”) However, we came together as a community like an “old

fashioned barn raising” and tackled cleaning, fixing, and working on our beautiful campus.

Over 50 people volunteered ages five to 80+ years old. Afterwards, we gathered for burgers

and hot-dogs to celebrate our productive and fun afternoon. We plan to do it again.

The stewardship and leadership from our parishioners is invaluable. This past year the Parish

Council, Knights of Columbus, Ladies Guild, and others helped make calls to our senior citizens

once again. Over 700 phone calls were made sharing upcoming activities and asking if there were

any needs. It was a good way to connect and care for our fellow parishioners.

Our annual fundraiser, Bella Festa, (formerly Shine)… An International Evening with Friends

included a new format than previous years. Guests strolled to internationally themed countries

enjoying food, drink, and entertainment. Patrons enjoyed Irish music and dancers, an Italian

Piazza in the Narthex, a German Octoberfest with a polka band, and a sidewalk café in Mexico.

This year we honored Ursula Treinen, and the late Mark Treinen, for their support over the

years and as one of the first co-chairs in creating the first annual fundraiser, Bella Festa, in 2005.

Our parish continues to evolve and grow as a community being missional to the Omaha

community. We strive to be a parish where everyone will know your name or face and that you

have a sense of belonging. If you want to grow in faith, leadership, meet new friends or gather

with old friends, St. Robert’s is that community. The Bellarmine Boomers formed this year for

people 55+ and is a social, faith-filled, and missional organization that began with friends wanting

to stay involved with the parish. We have many Bible studies, prayer groups, outreach programs,

socials, and leadership opportunities. I hope that you are interested in getting more involved in

our parish community, and I invite and welcome you to call me if you would like more information.

Spirit of St. Robert Award

MEET THE TREINENS

In 1989, Ursula married Mark and left her job as translator for an Austrian manufacturing

company to move to Omaha. Mark was a member of St. Robert’s Parish for a few years

and in order to meet people, Ursula began volunteering. Little did she know that it would

change her world! Without family or friends in America, the European immigrant was

welcomed with open arms by the St. Robert’s community and it gave her a much-needed

sense of belonging within her new parish family. As she settled in Omaha, St. Robert’s truly

became a home. Monsignor Kerwin was pastor when she joined the Board of Education

and went on to serve on St. Robert’s Parish Council, Home & School, Athletic Commission,

and Development Board. Ursula was also working as the German teacher at Creighton Prep

from 2004-2011, mentoring at-risk kids as a Big Sister and joined the Board of Big Brothers

Big Sisters of the Midlands before volunteering at Methodist Hospital and UNMC.

Mark, an Omaha native and executive at Valmont Industries, was active in community causes.

He served on the boards of Youth Emergency Services, Catholic Charities of Omaha, Catholic

Charities of Omaha Foundation, St. Robert’s Foundation, Marian High School, Roncalli High

School, Teens Finding Hope, Lester Electrical, and The Sheltering Tree. Two years into his

retirement, Governor Pete Ricketts appointed Mark to the OPPD Board in 2017.

ROSEMARY GAZDA

As a kid, Rosie Gazda wanted to be a nurse when she grew up. But when her sister fell and

hit her head, the sight of blood put her on a different career path. She chose teaching and

has made a difference in the lives of nearly 5,000 students and their families during the past

38 years. Thirty-four of those years have been right here at St. Robert’s, first teaching Social

Studies to 5th and 6th graders, and for the last five years, serving as the Religion teacher for

the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Teaching Religion is Rosie’s true calling. A woman of faith, she’s

excited to witness her students grow in knowledge and faith.

She’s committed to her family and friends, and is among the first to say “yes” to a fun time.

Rosie enjoys country music and is a big fan of the Huskers and Buffalo Bills football teams.

Attending concerts and games are some of her favorite things to do, as is collecting Mickey

Mouse souvenirs.

A 1971 graduate of St. Robert’s school, Rosie is all about sharing her many talents with the

world. If she could add one more talent, she said she’d like to be able to dance. “I have no

rhythm,” she said. Maybe not, but Rosie Gazda certainly has the moves that makes her a great

friend and a teacher who has influenced so many young lives over her 38 years in teaching.


Pastoral Ministry


St. Robert Bellarmine Pastoral Ministry continues to grow and bring parishioners into a deeper

relationship with Jesus.

This year the Rite Christian Rite of Initiation of Adults (RCIA) welcomed 16 people into the

Catholic faith. It is a rewarding experience for both the sponsors as well for the candidates. The

program runs 8 months. The RCIA leadership assists with conducting the meetings and creating

a welcoming environment. Each sponsor works one-on-one with the catechumens/candidates

and supports them on their faith journey.

Living nativity

This year, Alec came into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Afterwards, Alec wrote, "I learned

so much about the history of the church, living my faith, and scripture. Never in my life have I felt a

closer relationship with God than going through RCIA. Everyone involved with RCIA was incredibly

welcoming and I feel a huge sense of community with the parish."

SERVING OUR ACTIVE PARISH COMMUNITY

We have many volunteers. In order to provide a safe environment, the Archdiocese** mandates

the Safe Environment Program for all volunteers. This is a 2-hour meeting and is renewed every

5-6 years. This past year, our parish offered over 15 classes and trained over 450 volunteers.

St. Robert’s also provides training to other parishes and organizations in the Archdiocese.

Convalidation ceremony

Ladies Guild is a very active organization in the parish, and the Martha committee provides

funeral luncheons. We are one of the few parishes in the Omaha Archdiocese still providing this

service which is very much needed and appreciated by our grieving families. One of our newest

ministries is GriefShare, which supports those who have lost a loved one. We will begin our next

session this fall.

The year was filled with many numerous ceremonies and special events. These included

welcoming our new refugee family from Afghanistan, weddings, annual golf tournament,

penance services, holiday receptions, Parish Mission, and more. I feel blessed to work with all

of the amazing volunteers who do so much to welcome everyone who wants to get involved

and be part of this very active parish community.

I look forward to continuing with you on our most holy journey to grow closer to Jesus. Please

never hesitate to contact me to volunteer for any of our programs or events. You are the most

Liturgy


It was an exciting and revealing year for the worship/music ministries in 2021 – 2022 at

St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. When the lock-down ended, our Altar Server roster dropped

from 130 young people to 37. This resulted in an unprecedented drop in Sunday and

weekday Mass coverage. For a time, it looked like St. Robert’s would concede as most

other parishes in the city have, utilizing young men and women at weekend services only

and in reduced numbers.

I am thrilled to report that as of May 1st, our weekday Masses coverage returned to

over 60% and our weekend Masses coverage recovered to almost 100%. Our roster has

rebounded to 100 servers and climbing as young people continue to train. For many

years, St. Robert’s has boasted to have one of the only traditional active Altar Server

ministries left in the Omaha area. It is exciting to see our community’s parents and young

people renew their commitment to that legacy.

In response to the growing enthusiasm, we are blessed to announce that long time

parishioners, Dr. Joe and Mrs. Julie Skradski, have instituted two programs to inspire

lasting and impactful growth in this ministry. Starting May 2022, the top two servers, one

boy and one girl, who serve through the end of 9th grade as Altar Server or Sacristan, will

receive a $1000 scholarship to use towards high school or college tuition and savings.

Additionally, an honorable mention 6th – 8th grader will be eligible to receive a smaller

scholarship to reward their service. The Skradski’s will also host an end of the year picnic

for all servers to inspire fraternity, excitement, and tradition for the youth Altar ministries.

Our music ministry continues to thrive as well. From Labor Day to Pentecost, the 9:30

a.m. Mass has been covered with no interruptions by our Children’s, Teen, and Adult

Choirs. Our ministry collaboratively covered all confirmation, First Communion, Ascension,

and eighth grade graduation with no contractor support for the first time.

An anonymous donor has pledged to help renew and unify our technological worship

presentation because of the consistency of our musical excellence. The details of this

exciting investment will be shared with the parish as the summer progresses.

From Our Principal

Dear Parishioners,

As I reflect on the 2021-2022 school year, I am honored to share the many accomplishments

of our students, staff, and school/parish community. As a community, we persevered through

a pandemic. Our faith was a beacon during the trying days and gave us the strength to strive

for excellence. Our strong faith and determination allowed us to be recipients of the National

Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in Education Award for the second time.

St. Robert Bellarmine School is a Christ-centered environment supported by the five

core values of our mission: Living Faith, Practicing Service, Achieving Excellence, Inspiring

Leadership, and Promoting Collaboration. Our students actively participate in community

service projects such as Emergency Pregnancy Service (EPS), Open Door Mission and

our Warm and Wooly Drive. We are dedicated to educating students in a faith-filled

environment and developing students into leaders of all to Christ.

In February, we saw the excellence that our students strive for with 28% of our eighth

graders receiving high school scholarships to the Catholic high school of their choice.

Our students consistently score well above the national norms on the standardized STAR

Math and Reading assessments, which are administered three times a year. This is a true

testament to their leadership, hard work, and perseverance.

Our Inclusion Program continues to grow and educates students with mild to moderate

learning challenges. Currently, we have eight students ranging in grades from preschool

through grade eight. These students attend general education classes for more than

80% of the school day. The goal from the beginning was to create an environment where

all children, regardless of abilities, could learn together in a faith-filled community. One

student shared, “Every day I see relationships developing in classrooms and hallways. We

work together in a faith-filled community.”

As we continue on our path to educate all of God’s children to become leaders of all to Christ,

we are blessed to have the parishioners of St. Robert Bellarmine community who continue to

support our school. Thank you to all of our school volunteers and committee members who

dedicate their time and support to all the students at St. Robert Bellarmine School.

Tuition Assistance

Our National Blue Ribbon School at St. Robert Bellarmine provides a quality education

and many learning opportunities for students. The partnership with Madonna School for

the Inclusion Program deepens our mission to serve the entire parish family and provide

another invaluable learning opportunity for our students. St. Robert’s alumni continue

to excel in high school and beyond with the tremendous foundation established while

attending the 5-day school and our Religious Education program.

Knowledge

We believe it is our mission to ensure these educational opportunities are available to

all St. Robert’s parish families. St. Robert’s tries to keep tuition affordable for our families,

current tuition rates cover approximately 50% of the actual cost for each student. We

continue to ask each parishioner to consider donating to the Tuition Assistance Fund that

allows St. Robert’s to offer aide to families who may be experiencing financial difficulties

or just need a little help. The need in our parish community has increased over the past

couple of years and families receiving assistance are extremely grateful for the generous

support provided by St. Robert’s parishioners who donate to the Tuition Assistance Fund.

All families needing tuition assistance apply through FACTS and both income and expenses are taken into consideration.

Religious Education

Dear St. Robert Bellarmine Community,

The second year of “Family of Faith“ wrapped up focusing on the seven sacraments. It

was great to see many families coming back and feeling more comfortable sharing and

engaged in their faith formation with their children. Parents eagerly shared:

In memory of Wilma Smith – Religious Education Director (1985-2002)

Random Acts of Kindness……The Religious Education department received a donation

from the Smith family in Wilma’s memory. In continuing with Wilma’s legacy of giving to

others, the “Random Acts of Kindness” project continues her legacy of giving to others.

Each Religious Education family was given a monetary gift to help pay it forward during

the holiday season. Each family documented and shared pictures on how they shared

their kindness. We were amazed at the outpouring of love from the families who touched

so many people in need. A memory book was made and given to the Smith family sharing

all the creative ways so many lives were touched in memory of Wilma Smith.

Our Facebook group page and monthly newsletters keep our families informed and

connected throughout the year.

Youth Ministry


The St. Robert Bellarmine - Youth Group (SRB-YG) had a full and active year! I am

beyond blessed to have been a part of this program for over 15 years and now

have the opportunity to further develop it within my new role as director! I would

like to highlight a few of our activities, events, and accomplishments in 2021-2022:

• SRB-YG meetings throughout the year

It was incredibly important for our students to connect in our youth group

setting. We had an outstanding number of about 40 high school students in

attendance at weekly meetings, with a majority of those students being new

freshmen and sophomores. Community was built early on with Summer Nights

meetings every other week and progressed as time went on.

• Middle School Youth Ministry

The pandemic put a damper on our work with the middle school students

during the 2020-2021 school year, and with restrictions lightened this year, we

made an effort to reboot. Each quarter, events and gatherings were hosted to

engage with students in 5-day, religious education, and homeschool. Such events

included a trip to the pumpkin patch, movie nights, multiple service projects, and

a successful murder mystery party.

Vacation Bible school

• Living Stations of the Cross

After 2 years of virtual renditions, we returned to an in-person performance of the

YG presenting the Stations of the Cross. It was a beautiful and prayerful experience.

• Graduate Breakfast – Sunday, May 15th, 9:30 a.m. Mass and Breakfast

It was great to hear from our parish graduates their future plans at this annual

recognition Mass and breakfast for all graduating seniors.

• Vacation Bible School: Monumental – June 6-10

Over 250 campers enjoyed fun activities, games, singing, and dancing. With the

help of more than 100 middle school and high school volunteers, the week was

memorable for all and marked St. Robert’s 20th anniversary of hosting VBS!

I truly cannot wait to see what lies ahead next year! I look forward to welcoming new

members into our SRB-YG family, building upon our long-standing history and cultivating

young leaders of our parish to give back to St. Robert’s as well as their community.

The First Year

Reed Family Early Learning Academy

Dear Parishioners,

The Reed Family Early Learning Academy (ELA) had an astonishing 2021-2022 year! The

Academy served 227 children in 2021-2022, a 20% increase from the previous year. We

continue to fill vacancies due to a healthy waiting list of future patrons.

The ELA applied for a grant through the state of Nebraska. The grant was two-fold

and we were able to use the funds towards improving teacher incentives and pay, and

purchase a new curriculum program called Learning Beyond Paper. This new curriculum

has drastically helped our teachers cut back on time outside the classroom needed

for planning and it is allowing the staff to be present and engaged with the children

throughout the day. The curriculum is “play based” and teaches children everything they

need to progress and be ready for the next school year. Our families see how a playbased

curriculum is educating their children and preparing them for the next school year.

This past year the ELA was able to lighten Covid-19 restrictions and not be fearful of

closing down. We were able to focus more on teaching and not worry so much about

keeping groups separate at all times. The easing of restrictions allowed us to bring back

more family and community events such as a visit from the Fire Department, building

gingerbread houses with family volunteers, our Christmas program for friends and family,

graduation, and our first Joe-on-the-Go coffee to celebrate Mother’s Day.

As we get a bit more back to “normal”, we look forward to continuing all of these awesome

activities and adding even more in the future. We have amazing families and a dedicated

staff. The sky is the limit on what we can accomplish in the upcoming 2022-2023 school year!

Dear Parishioners,

St. Robert’s is blessed with so many parishioners willing to share their time, talent, and

treasure! St. Robert’s continues to be in good financial shape. Thanks to our past capital

campaigns and financial commitments to the Reed Learning Academy, we have a strong

balance sheet and have paid off our debt. The income statement for the 2021-2022 fiscal

year was positive, primarily from the Reed Early Learning Academy operation, Restricted

Donations designated for upcoming projects and Sunday collections.

This past fiscal year, there were a smaller number of capital improvements which reduced

the amount of capital outlay compared to years past. These included the following items:

• Annual parish and school technology refresh

• Concrete work for parking lot repairs, curb repairs and sidewalk repairs

• Floor stripping and waxing

• East gym lighting update – replacing old fluorescent lighting with new LED lighting

We are currently evaluating the entire campus, creating a multi-year plan to prioritize the

capital needs of the parish. With this size of campus and facilities, there is always a list of

capital needs, repair and maintenance items, and upgrades or additions. Some of the

items started after the end of the fiscal year or are planned for early fall include:

• Removal of trees impacted by ash borer or other insects/diseases

• Replacement of the shingle roof over the church and rectory

• Re-keying of the school and other parts of the campus

St. Robert’s has several other capital maintenance projects on the radar over the next 1 to 4 years.

• The entire membrane roof over the school and parish will be replaced over the next

two years.

• Security remains a top priority for the entire parish, especially at the school. We will

continue to invest in safety and security improvements throughout the entire campus.

• The Mainelli Center is 22 years old, and the church renovation is now 15 years old.

Updates and improvements will be needed soon for both spaces.

• The retaining wall along the east side of the property will need replaced within the next

few years.

• The need for tuition assistance remains and has increased over the past few years.

St. Robert’s continues to be vibrant and active, so there will always be projects to complete

and financial need to support our facilities along with all spiritual and social activities of the

parish. We are blessed that St. Robert’s has weathered the uncertainty and challenges of

the past couple of years and is in great shape looking to the near future.

St. Robert Bellarmine Parish has a long history of helping parishioners to know and serve

God. The Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish Foundation was designed to continue the legacy

of founding pastor, Msgr. Eugene Kerwin, and founding parishioners. The security from

the Foundation will continue to help grow and keep our strong traditions and values of

building a faith-filled community at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish and School. Your prayers

The Foundation Board advises and oversees the investments and policies of the Parish

Endowments and funds. Board members use a screening process that is compatible

with Catholic teaching; they also help secure funds and planned gifts to help grow the

Foundation. A very conservative three-year rolling average of 3% provides an annual

distribution to the parish and school operating budget. Scholarships are distributed

annually from the Fr. Shane Endowment and the Cupich Family Scholarship Fund to

St. Robert’s students and families. A named fund can be established under the

Endowments as an individual or family for a donation of $25,000.

Please visit the Donor Wall outside the Mainelli Center. This beautiful electronic board

recognizes individuals, families, businesses, and corporations for major financial gifts,

capital campaign support, and legacy gifts to the parish. Additionally, the wall is interactive

and shares parish history, provides education, and offers parish calendar information

with the ability to update information as it happens.

for their expertise and hard work overseeing the Saint Robert Bellarmine Foundation. A

LAUREN (DALQUIST) LIER – PARISH COUNCIL

Lauren (Dalhquist) Lier graduated from St. Robert Bellarmine School

in 2006. Lauren and husband Aaron are parishioners and have one

daughter and another child on the way. Lauren shared that getting

involved in the parish is a great way to meet people and build her faith

with others. Lauren founded the Young Adult Community and is serving

her second term on the Parish Council. She is also on the SRB Connect

Committee reaching out to parishioners and inviting them to become

involved. “I was given the opportunity to get involved in my parish and

my faith has grown because of this wonderful experience.”

KATHRYN GRIEB – LADIES GUILD

Kathryn and husband George have been in the parish since 1970.

Kathryn was invited to join the Ladies Guild and almost didn’t go. Now,

50+ years later, she continues to serve her parish with a giving spirit and

a smile. While age and health issues may have slowed her down a bit,

stewardship remains very important to her. “I am still involved because

I believe it is vital for our age group 65 to 95 to visit, laugh, stay involved,

and make friends. And, of course, nibble on good food,” Kathryn says.

“Being a good steward makes me feel good and happy. At the same

time, it is giving many ladies a reason to get up in the morning.”
