I am honored to be representing the Home Builders 

Association of Greater Cincinnati on the 60th Diamond 

Anniversary of HOMEARAMA®. As we reflect on the 

past 6 decades of HOMEARAMA®, I am reminded of 

the incredible growth and innovation that our industry 

has seen. We have overcome challenges and adapted to 

changing times, always staying true to our commitment to 

quality and craftsmanship. As one of the longest running 

and most successful new home showcases in the country, 

HOMEARAMA® provides an opportunity for us to come 

together as a community and celebrate our industry, our 

accomplishments, and our shared vision for the future. 

This year, we are thrilled to be hosting HOMEARAMA® Urban Edition at Martin’s 

Gate in Newport, Kentucky. This marks our first show to be held in Kentucky and 

our first show co-produced with the Building Industry Association of Northern 

Kentucky. Martin’s Gate was developed in partnership by T.J. Ackermann and Ralph 

Meierjohan, the same developers behind the award-winning Walworth Junction site. 

This 4.23-acre hillside community includes 58 lots for attached and detached living. 

Showcasing some of the most innovative and inspiring urban homes in the region, 

Martin’s Gate features 8 homes in a variety of architectural styles with single family

Ohio River to the brand-new Martin’s Gate 

neighborhood in Newport, Kentucky.

OLD MEETS NEW IN Newport 

It’s a city known to many of us, who visit for an evening of entertainment, an 

afternoon at the aquarium, a night of fireworks, or a spectacular view of the 

Cincinnati skyline. But Newport, Kentucky is so much more to the over 15,000 

people who call this community home. Newport is a city with a rich history and 

a promising future. Its historic charm, amenities, location and people make it an 

incredible place to take root and grow. ➻ 


History 

The city was established in 1795 by James Taylor, named 

in honor of Admiral Christopher Newport, who led the 

English settlement at Jamestown, in Taylor’s home state 

of Virginia. 

Newport received a major boost in 1803, when the army 

purchased five acres for $1 from Taylor to build a military 

post at the mouth of the Licking River. This was a center of 

activity during both the war of 1812 and the Civil War. It 

is said Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and General 

Ulysses S. Grant all served here at one time. The 1860s 

brought mass transit in the form of mule-driven streetcars. 

The turn of the century brought electricity and the 1920s 

brought turbulent times, gambling halls, and nightclubs. 

In the 1980s, public outcry led to vast political and social 

change. Today Newport is booming with developments 

and great places to live, work, shop, and play. 

Neighborhoods 

The city covers 3.5 square miles and serves a population 

of over 15,000. There are nine designated neighborhoods 

located throughout Newport: Clifton, (home 

to HOMEARAMA® 2023), Buena Vista, Cote Brilliante, 

Cliffview, Gateway, Mansion Hill, Two Rivers I, Two Rivers 

II, and Taylor’s Landing. Newport has several historic 

districts, including the East Row Historic District, the second 

largest local historic district in Kentucky. Residents 

and business owners in these neighborhoods meet on a 

regular basis to share ideas, coordinate projects and plan 

events. These events include the annual East Row Historic 

Victorian Christmas Home Tour, and the Garden Walk. 

Education 

The Newport Independent School District consists of five 

schools: Newport High School, Newport Intermediate 

School, Newport Primary School, Newport Regional 

School, and the Newport School of Innovation, all totaling 

an enrollment of roughly 1,600 students, and a ten-to-one 

student-to-teacher ratio. Private schools include Trent 

Montessori and Newport Central Catholic High School. 


Location 

Three bridges—two vehicular and one pedestrian (the

As children, we might have been lucky enough to have a tree house in our 

back yards. We’d climb up a rickety ladder and claim the space among the 

treetops as our own. If we were lucky, we had a rope and pulley rigged to 

the main house that served as a conduit for snacks and soft drinks. These 

retreats served as our own little slice of heaven. 

Flash forward a few decades and, as adults, that desire for a getaway with a view still lingers. But, 

with age, we’ve gotten a bit more sophisticated. Weather-resistant rugs and cushy couches create

holding beverage options that have grown up with us. To keep bugs at bay, we might have

fire, or steaks, chicken and shish kabobs cooked on the fancy grill in an

deck, but if you aren’t fortunate enough to have that option, consider 

adding soft outdoor lighting, in the string variety, or built-in to the floors,

Even if you are fortunate enough to have a stunning city view from your balcony, 

or a lush look to your tree-filled back yard from your patio, it’s fun to add an up 

close and flowerful mix into your panorama. In all shapes and sizes, filled with all 

sorts of colors, planters add a punch that’s undeniable. With that idea in mind, we 

thought we’d share some of our favorite ideas for container gardens and hanging 

baskets.

Container gardens 

Before you begin, check the rules for your 

building. For example, some buildings don’t 

allow containers containing vegetables as 

they may attract birds or pests. 

Once you are ready to go, the first thing to 

consider are the containers you plan to use. 

If you are thinking on the larger side, terra 

cotta and ceramic pots might be too heavy 

for a balcony and difficult to move. You 

might want to consider plastic, fiberglass or 

bamboo containers. 

For example, Tom Boehmer, owner of 

Renaissance Garden Accents, tells us a large 

cast stone pot may weigh 150 pounds or

more empty, a fiberglass pot that size might 

weigh 15 pounds, and a fiberstone version 

would weigh 40 or 50 pounds. 

“The benefit of a fiberstone pot is that it 

is more substantial and can handle a large 

plant—such as a tree,” Boehmer says. “It 

looks like real stone but with a fraction of 

the weight.” 

Make sure you get a pot that’s the right 

size for the job. “You want a container 

that is large enough to support the root 

system of your plants—and one with excellent 

drainage holes,” says Ron Wilson with 

Natorp’s. “Do not add gravel to assist in 

drainage. It will only add weight.”

Next, use a top-grade potting mix. Wilson 

adds, “These mixes are what the professionals 

use and typically include sphagnum 

4 

peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite, with 

occasionally blending in a small percentage 

of coir or very fine pine bark.” 

Throughout the growing season, experts 

recommend using a combination of a slowrelease 

fertilizer, along with a liquid fertilizer. 

Talk with your local garden center 

about which brand and combination is right 

for the plants you are working with. 

Don’t waste money buying plants that 

aren’t right for your location—no matter 

how much you love them. The amount of 

sun your space gets is critical. Keep in mind 

that sun-loving plants need 6 to 8 hours of 

sun each day to grow well. ➻ 


Hanging baskets 

There’s hardly an easier way to dress up a 

balcony or patio than hanging a basket full of 

flowers. But it’s important to remember that 

hanging baskets tend to dry quickly—especially 

in the heat of summer. And as roots grow, 

they leave less space for water. You may have 

to water only every two or three days in the 

spring, but as plants grow and temperatures 

rise, you might need to shift to watering every 

day. 

Also you may want to consider adding waterstoring 

polymers, like Soil Moist, to your potting 

mix. When you water the soil, these granules 

absorb water which is released back into 

the soil when it becomes dry.
