Removal of the INSTDEF Utility
The INSTDEF utility is not supported on z/VM V5R1 and has been removed. The
INSTDEF utility was used to move selected items to SFS at installation time.
Removal of Obsolete 370 References
System/370 architecture (370 mode) virtual machines are not supported on z/VM
Version 4 or later. Obsolete 370 references have been removed. However, 370
Accommodation is still supported.

This edition supports the general availability of z/VM Version 4 Release 4 (z/VM
V4R4).
Logical Channel Subsystems
This new channel subsystem structure allows the definition of multiple logical
channel subsystems, providing channel path and subchannel controls for
configuring from one to four channel subsystem images. Each channel subsystem
image can be configured with up to 256 channel paths, and each logical partition
has access to one channel subsystem image.
The CP commands DEFINE CHPID/PATH, DEFINE CU/CNTLUNIT, DEFINE
DEVICE/IODEVICE, MODIFY CHPID/PATH, MODIFY CU/CNTLUNIT, MODIFY
DEVICE/IODEVICE, DELETE CHPID/PATH, DELETE CU/CNTLUNIT, DELETE
DEVICE/IODEVICE, QUERY CHPID, QUERY DYNAMIC_I/O, and QUERY LPARS
were updated to include support for multiple logical channel subsystems.
Virtual Switch Support
The new DEFINE VSWITCH command creates a CP system-owned switch (a z/VM
Virtual Switch) to which virtual machines can connect. The new DETACH VSWITCH
command removes a z/VM Virtual Switch from the CP system, uncouples any
virtual adapters using the z/VM Virtual Switch, and releases system resources
associated with it. The new QUERY VSWITCH command displays information about
the z/VM Virtual Switch. The new SET VSWITCH command modifies the properties
of a z/VM Virtual Switch. A new QUERY CONTROLLER command displays
information about the z/VM TCP/IP virtual machines.
The CP commands, COUPLE, DEFINE NIC, QUERY NIC, QUERY LAN, QUERY
VMLAN, and UNCOUPLE, were updated to include support for z/VM Virtual
Switches and VM LAN segments.
Integrated 3270 Console
Adds support for real and virtual integrated 3270 console devices. Real support
enables this device to be used as the system operator console and removes the
requirement to have an external 3270 device to install and service z/VM systems.
A new load parameter, SYSG, indicates to the stand-alone program loader and to
DDR that the integrated 3270 is to be used as the console device. CP recognizes a
new value of the IPL CONS parameter, SYSG. The SYSTEM_3270 parameter can
