2. If you specify a list or range of devices, an attempt is made to vary the specified<br />

path online or offline to each device. An error message is issued for every<br />

device for which the specified path cannot be varied online or offline. Check<br />

examples after these usage notes.<br />

3. Paths leading to dedicated non-dynamic pathing devices that allow<br />

RESERVE/RELEASE are not varied offline.<br />

To determine if RESERVE/RELEASE is allowable, enter the QUERY DASD<br />

comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> see if the response from the device indicates that the device is<br />

SHARED, RESERVED, or has a RESERVE PENDING (see the Responses<br />

section of the QUERY DASD comm<strong>and</strong>).<br />

4. Inoperational paths may be varied online because no I/O is issued to validate<br />

the path when a non-dynamic pathing device is reserved or is dedicated to a<br />

guest <strong>and</strong> supports RESERVE/RELEASE.<br />

5. When varying a path offline:<br />

v Vary the path offline from the guest operating system if the guest (such as<br />

MVS/ESA) supports a VARY PATH comm<strong>and</strong>.<br />

v Vary the path offline from the host system (z/<strong>VM</strong>).<br />

6. When varying a path online:<br />

v Make the path physically available.<br />

v Vary the path online to the host (z/<strong>VM</strong>).<br />

v Vary the path online to the guest operating system if the guest supports a<br />

VARY PATH comm<strong>and</strong>.<br />

7. If the <strong>IBM</strong> Service Representative indicates that the service on the path is<br />

complete but the control unit initiated resume did not successfully vary the<br />

affected path online, the FORCE option may be used to vary the quiesced path<br />

back online.<br />

Enter vary on path c2 to 140 to make path C2 leading to device 140 available to<br />

that device. A typical response may appear as follows:<br />

Vary path c2 online comm<strong>and</strong> initiated<br />

Vary path c2 online comm<strong>and</strong> complete<br />

Enter vary off path c2 from 0190-0197 to make path C2 unavailable to devices<br />
