Structural<br />
Panel Fasteners by Voi-Shan serve to make removable<br />
panels an integral part of the primary<br />
structure. They afford easy access to equipment<br />
behind the panel areas and offer repeated fastener<br />
reusability. On many high performance and<br />
supersonic aircraft where the skin is a load carrying<br />
member, a structural panel fastener is an ideal<br />
method of obtaining access to components within<br />
the structure of the aircraft.<br />
When an access panel is removed for maintenance<br />
purposes, physical deflection resulting from<br />
stresses in the understructure is revealed. The shift<br />
in the hole pattern changes gradually as each panel<br />
fastener is retracted. As removal progresses,<br />
residual shear loading on the few remaining<br />
fasteners makes the task increasingly more<br />
difficult. Similarly, re-installation requires progressive<br />
“pull-up” and “line-up” to bring the<br />
panel and the deflected understructure together<br />
for a perfectly mated fit. Voi-Shan structural<br />
panel fasteners solve this problem through carefully<br />
designed features that suit any application<br />
calling for quick and easy removal and reassembly.<br />
Overall structural integrity results from fasteners<br />
that have the ability to distribute stresses over the<br />
metal skin. The Voi-Shan system offers the only<br />

regardless of material thickness. Closing a gap of<br />
up to .125", they readily permit hole mis-alignment of<br />
up to .040" - - while carrying a higher load than any<br />
other quick operating fastener of this type. Voi-Shan<br />
structural panel fasteners have excellent reusability,<br />
and are capable of repeated cycles of installations<br />
and troublefree diassemblies.<br />
The basic varieties of the fastener include<br />
designs engineered to suit a range of specific<br />
panel conditions. One essentially caters to thin<br />
panel sub-structure combinations ranging from<br />
.062" - .312" thickness. With its common low<br />
height receptacle suiting all sleeve bolt grip<br />
lengths, added convenience is afforded. Another<br />
patented form is expressly manufactured to meet<br />
aerospace needs for high and low temperatures.<br />
The same fastener accommodates misalignment<br />
with sleeve bolt taper, which provides easy entry<br />
and lead-in yet permits rapid installation or<br />
removal through its multiple lead thread design.<br />

1. Select sleeve bolt size and style. Next select grip length. Generally the sleeve bolt grip should be equal to the total<br />
material thickness. However, if structural requirements permit, consider using a shorter grip bolt for weight and<br />
cost reduction. This is usually possible when the panel thickness is less than the sub-structure thickness.<br />
2. Choose the receptacle desired. Next select second and third receptacle cash numbers (barrel height and stud protrusion)<br />
by using the tables on sheets 4 thru 6.<br />
3. Diameter of sleeve bolt will determine retainer ring to be used.<br />
4. Recommended tightening torque for 19XXXX-6 series is 100 inch lbs., for 19XXXX-5 series is 45 inch lbs. and for<br />
19XXXX-4 series is 25 inche lbs.<br />

To maintain structural integrity of the panel,<br />
the correct type, size and length bolts must be<br />
inserted in the proper locations.<br />
6 Begin torquing at one point on the panel<br />
and continue in one or both directions.<br />
MILSON REMOVAL<br />
1 Loosen each bolt two to three revolutions. Work<br />
in one or both directions on the panel.<br />
2 Disengage each bolt from each receptacle and<br />
pull to “full out” position. Work in one or both<br />
directions on the panel.<br />

3 Install retainer ring onto bolt using NST-199<br />
installation tool.<br />
A. Use thumb and index finger to slide the<br />
retainer ring from the tool onto the bolt.<br />
CAUTION<br />
Do not expand retainer ring greater than<br />
belled end of installation tool. Over-expansion<br />
of ri will result in loss of retaining feature.<br />
4 Position panel above mating structure and press<br />
all bolts to the engaged position.<br />
5 Torque bolts as specified on page 1, note 4.<br />
CAUTION<br />
With thin panels, reduce tightening torque to<br />
prevent deformation of retainer ring counterbore.<br />
