A word from the Principal...
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a week of contrasting activities since our last newsletter. On Friday, we enjoyed the
fun and frivolity of our Coronation Celebrations. Thank you so much for supporting your child to
create a crown at home, we had so many fantastic entries, particularly in EYFS, Y1 and Y2 – it
made judging far more challenging than expected! Luckily, the weather held off so everyone could
enjoy the street party outside and a big thank you to our office and kitchen teams for ensuring
everyone was able to benefit from the party lunch!
On to this week and, after another enjoyable bank holiday weekend, the Y6 children have been
knuckling down to their SATs. Through the week, they have had 6 papers to sit and have been
absolute stars. I supported the children in the Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation paper at the
start of the week and their levels of composure, resilience and determination have been admirable.
Even the reading paper, which has caused some outrage across the country for its level of difficulty,
was tackled superbly by our children. Well done Year 6, we are very proud of you.
We are now racing through the summer term, with only 2 weeks left before the half term break. It
won’t be long until the Lion King, Sports Day and a multitude of other exciting events are heading
our way, so watch this space!
Kind regards,
Mr Adam Anderson
Principal

Swimming
On Thursday 4th May, a Year 5 and 6 swimming team went to the annual
Penwith Swimming gala at Penzance Leisure Centre. The event was great and
the children swam so well. They competed against 15 other schools in Penwith
in all four disciplines of swimming strokes. Some of our children qualified for
the finals from their heats and Sophie C came 1st in front crawl, Chloe came
1st in Backstroke and Zayd came 2nd in butterfly.
Well done to Libby, Hannah, Sofija, Flossy, Charlie, Sennen, Hugo, Reenie,
Savannah, Harry, Felix, Elijah and Tamlin who also took part and represented
Ludgvan School very well. Good work team!

Coronation celebrations...

Broad and Balanced...
EYFS
Early Years have had lots of fun celebrating and learning about the Coronation
of King Charles. The children looked at photos of King Charles throughout his
life and put them in chronological order. Then they discussed the differences
between when King Charles was a child and now. The children have also
enjoyed becoming Kings and Queens, creating some fabulous crowns and
gowns and even role playing the coronation. Last week, we read the King’s
Colourful Coronation and then created our own carriages during drawing club.
Outside, the children have used the mud kitchen to have royal tea parties.
There were some fabulous mud cakes. Early Years have also been learning
about self portraits, making their own using King Charles’ stamp as
inspiration.

Broad and Balanced...
Year 1
The children in Year 1 all looked amazing on Friday with their fantastic crowns
for the Coronation picnic. It sounds like they all had a lovely weekend too! In
art this term our focus has been on different types of 3D art. We first looked at
Henry Moore and re-created some of his clay sculptures. We then re-created
Phoebe Cummings clay flowers using a selection of different tools. The children
are really proud of their sculptures and produced some amazing work.
We have just started our new science topic about plants. They have learnt
about the different parts of a plant and their purpose. The children have
planted cress seeds, beans, and sunflower seeds. They have taken their
sunflower seeds home to look after and we are looking forward to seeing how
well they are all growing in a few weeks!

Broad and Balanced...
Year 2
On Friday, it was wonderful to see Year 2 wearing such amazing crowns for the
Coronation picnic. We enjoyed learning about Queen Victoria and the children
became kings and queens for the morning. They sat in our ‘hot seat’ and were
asked about the new rules and laws they would put in place. They then tea
stained some paper to create their royal scrolls for these new rules and laws.
Year 2 has also been busy in Art. They have started their second block on
drawing and it has been amazing to see how much more detail and precision
they are using compared to the start of the year. So far they hae focused on
shading and creating shadows using different grades of pencil. They took such
a long time over their artwork and were really proud of what they created.
We have also discovered some fraction geniuses this week. Our new Maths
block has been learning all about finding fractions of shapes and amounts. The
class has been amazing at taking on this new learning and being able to recognise
and find halves, quarters and thirds. Well done Year 2!

Broad and Balanced...
Year 3
Year 3 have been working hard to complete their diary entries as Howard
Carter, the Egyptologist who discovered Tutankamun’s tomb. The children have
remembered the key facts so well and are really enjoying this topic. They have
continued to make their 3D Tutankhamun masks and as they near finishing
them, they are looking great. In maths the children have been learning about
fractions and decimals and they have worked really hard to understand some
tricky concepts. At the end of last week the children listened very well to an
informative assembly from the RNLI lifeguards and they enjoyed a lovely picnic
celebrating the King’s Coronation.

Broad and Balanced...
Year 4
Class 4 have been very busy in class finishing their setting descriptions
neatly and showing off their best handwriting. The children were all very proud
of their completed copies; they all love looking at them on the classroom
wall. They are going to make their collages this week which they have already
planned and designed in class. We are all very excited to see the outcomes.
In maths, we have been learning about decimals. I was really impressed with
how quickly they picked up the understanding and new concept. As part of the
King’s Coronation, they completed a piece of writing about the changes they
would make if they were the new King or Queen. There were so many great
ideas. They also created a portrait of King Charles. They were given artist
licence to represent him how they wanted. All outcomes were excellent.

Broad and Balanced...
Year 5
We have had a fantastic couple of weeks in Year 5! We had an excellent trip to
the Maritime Museum where we were lucky enough to take part in some Viking
workshops. The pupils were also able to explore the exhibition surrounding
pirates and have a go at sailing miniature boats.
In English, we have published our interesting newspaper reports surrounding
Viking events – we can’t wait for you to read them!
In Art, we have been focusing on refining our drawing techniques, we explored
our senses and tried to draw the flavour/texture of different foods (some were
less enjoyable than others!). We also conducted a nature walk and used our
natural surroundings to focus on continuous line drawing.
Finally, we enjoyed our lovely Coronation lunch on the playground together.
Well done Year 5!

Broad and Balanced...
Year 6
Year 6 have had a busy couple of weeks. Last week they worked hard towards
their SATs and finished the week on a high with the King’s Coronation
celebrations, enjoying a ‘street party’ lunch on Friday. A visit from the RNLI,
who gave an assembly on water safety, was a nice break from all the work.
This week they have completed the four days of tests, taking it all in their
stride and conducting themselves throughout with maturity and respect.
We are so proud of you Year 6. Well done!

PARENT / CARER ENGAGEMENT ONLINE WORKSHOP
18th May 2023 1.30 - 3.30pm
With Natasha Davey-Diop and Nicky Hepworth
Cornwall Council Designated Safeguarding Lead Network
Overview
“Parental engagement in children’s learning makes a difference – it is the most
powerful school improvement lever we have” (Harris and Goodall 2007).
Effective parental engagement is a crucial ingredient in both academic and
social success, especially for our most vulnerable pupils. Cornwall Council’s
Together for Families
Directorate, supported by Parent Carer Cornwall, have developed a framework
and toolkit to promote the partnership between pupils, parents and
school to help create a culture of mutual collaboration in order to support all
learners to succeed.
The session will provide:-
An overview of the importance of parental engagement in education.
An insight into the framework and toolkit which will include sharing some
examples of the evidence of impact through case studies.
Reflect upon one of the key principles of effective parental engagement and
identify some of the key components that underpin it.
