Description

This book is a compilation of papers presented at ICDHS (International Conferences on Design History and

Studies) by Yoshinori Amagai on the evolution of Japanese design concepts from the 1870s to the 1950s.

The author surveys the process from the introduction of the idea of applying art to industry from Europe in

the early Meiji era to the spread of the concept of modern design in the post-war period in the Showa era,

taking into account discussions on kogei (crafts), and investigates the evolution of the concept of design in

Japan. The uniqueness of the transition of the Japanese concept of design, according to the author, lies in

attempts to utilise traditional aesthetic values, especially those embodied by historical handicrafts, in

everyday life modernised by industrialisation of the Western model.
