This course covers basic concepts of microbiology with an emphasis on medically important

microorganisms and infectious diseases. The topics studied also include microscopy, microbial

growth and genetics, antimicrobial agents, epidemiology, and immune system responses to

pathogens. Lab exercises emphasize aseptic technique, isolation and culture of

microorganisms, microscopy, and staining techniques.

CHEM140, BIOS140, or equivalent

Each week, you will conduct a laboratory exercise.

IMPORTANT Lab Completion Information

Instructions to download the VUMIE software are linked. Also attached is the Virtual Unknown Training

manual. This has the instructions on how to work in this ilab environment.

You will be using a virtual laboratory software package, VirtualUnknown. This software allows you to perform

simulated "wet lab" experiments on your computer. You will access this software through the iLab environment

(lab.devry.edu). See the iLab tab under week 1 for information about logging in to this area. The online lab

For the lab exercises noted above, you will write a lab report based upon that week's experiment and your

observations. Details of the lab report are available in each week's lab tab.

Each lab report is worth 30 points.

Please check with your instructor if the lab is going to be online or onsite. If your labs are going to be online,

then you will be using the VirtualUnknown software - same as the online students. However, if you will be doing

on-site labs you will need to purchase the following lab manual from the online DeVry bookstore: Lab Manual

If you will be doing onsite labs, you will need to purchase the lab manual. The lab manual is a custom print

When are grades calculated, and how can I view my grades?

You must complete any quizzes and post your written assignments (if necessary) to the weekly Dropbox

by Sunday 11:59 p.m. (MT) each week, except Week 8 which closes at 11:59 p.m. (MT) Saturday.

Once your work is reviewed, you should see comments and total points for each assignment in the

Gradebook. Instructors should have Discussion work graded by the following Tuesday and all other

assignments by the following Friday.

You may check your progress at any time by going to the Gradebook, selecting the week and then your

name.
