PORTFOLIO KARAN SHARMAVENICE BIENNALE 2023LOCATION: INVERMERE, BRITISH COLUMBIAAREA:NAPHASE: STAGE 2 FINALISTVenice Biennalle 2023 proposal engages with Canada’s 400+(and counting) year history of resource exploitation and that history’seffects on community development with the aim of developingan alternative path forward.This project is a response to the context in which we find ourselves,borne of a belief in the power of design to reshape theway we live. The project team is a reflection of the breadth of thisambition and an acknowledgment of the interconnectedness ofsystems and structures that define our contemporary world.The overarching aim, then, is to develop an exhibition that connectspeople and creates a space for conversation about morejust, more resilient, and more viable community building practices.48Single ResourceExploitationCommunitiesHistorical ContextBeginning with the earliest European settlers,the history of community development in Canadais inextricably linked with the history of singleresource exploitation economies.While the character of these resource-basedeconomies varies considerably, there arefundamental consistencies in their effect oncommunities, Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous groups, the Land, and the capacity ofthe Land to support life of all kinds.From an ecological perspective, these singleresource exploitation communities often sufferfrom degradation or collapse of local ecosystems,including poisoning of the Land, depletion of theproductive capacity of one or more resources, andthe creation of signifi cant amounts of waste thatthreatens the long term health of many forms oflife.From a cultural perspective, this model ofImage Above: Resource extraction around the borders of Canadaerasure, and forced relocation of IndigenousPeoples, while simultaneously obliteratingtraditional knowledges and ways of workingwith (rather than against) the Land. It is alsocharacterized by investment in infrastructurethat is based on economic expedience and notlong term planning, often sacrifi cing intensiveoperational and embodied energy costs for thesake of minimizing capital investment.Instead of encouraging and allowing forgenerational roots to be established, thesecommunities are often built around a culture oftransience. Housing stock lacks a connection tothe material culture of the place it is built, and isusually temporary in nature.From an economic perspective, single resourceexploitation communities do not retain the value ofthe resources they produce, surviving instead onthe residual (and usually minimal) re-investmentof extracted value back into the community. Thisarrangement creates total economic instability;communities are only viable as long as theOur landscapes are littered with the consequenceof this model: ecosystems collapsed by overfishing or strip mining; cultures obliterated by theinsidious genocidal forces of settler-colonialism;communities and infrastructures abandonedonce their productivity is exhausted; and workersuprooted from their homes and forced to searchfarther and farther afi eld for economic opportunityThe effects of this untenable economic model arenow being felt in all dimensions of our daily lives;with the frailty of global supply chains and impactsof climate change posing an undeniable threatto global sustainability. Particularly, the ongoingremoval and displacement of Indigenous Peoplesas stewards of the land creates a critical cause foconcern, appreciating their connection to the landand water.
