Get LocalI’m dreaming of an African Christmas...just like the one I used to know...I will forever cherish thememories of my earlychildhood days when Christmasapproached.Those magic days will neverreturn, but at least nobody cantake away the recollectionsforever ingrained in mymemory.As children growing up in ourdusty neighbourhoods, we hadso much fun and no care in theworld as we went about ourdaily, uneventful lives.When Christmas approachedit would be a big affair in ourneighbourhood, as it was the onlytime of the year when all members ofour families would come together forsome memorable times.Uncles, aunts, mothers and fathersall came home during that time of theyear in anticipation of the big familyfeast, culminating with the slaughter of abeast. The feast, singing and dancing toAfrican rhythms went on till the wee hoursof the morning.Those were the days of celebration andhaving fun, while enjoying the time spentwith uncles and aunts and even fatherswho worked in big cities like Durban andJohannesburg.I remember as a herd boy looking aftermy grandmother’s cows in the fields, thatI never cared for fancy things life couldprovide. I never knew anything better.With the little that we had, mygrandmother and I took life in our stride.Christmas came only once in a year.We had no fancy food, no fancy clothingand absolutely no partying or anythinglike that as we went about our dailynormal lives. We were content with thelittle we had.During the festive season though,all around there would be an air ofcelebration and jubilation as everyonebegan to anticipate what Christmas couldpossibly bring for us.When the schools closed for theSummer holidays we would start doingrehearsals to sing Christmas carols, buyingeach other little presents like sweets andlooking forward to the time when we allwould enjoy fancy foodstuffs, as perhapsan uncle who worked in Durban wouldpresent us with fancy goodies like biscuits.I remember these guys in theneighbourhood who, when their mothersand aunts came home for Christmas,would buy them suits and fancy shoesand hats, and on Christmas day theywould be wearing them right there in thefields while running after the cattle.This was a time for merriment, a timewhen we had a little happiness and a spiritof giving prevailed; something we didn’tusually have during the normal days ofour lives.22 Get It Zululand December 12
