Get ParentingThegreatestgiftof allWith an infectious smile and bouts of babyjargon echoing through the hallway, oneyear-oldSven Chetty gleefully makes hisway to the lounge.Our conversation stops as we aremesmerised by a miracle toddler, whojust one year ago beat all odds for survivalin the neo-natal unit of Netcare’s The BayHospital.His mum Elaine (32) holds him close toher bosom as she recollects an arduousjourney of almost 11 years to conceive.‘There was never a reason why wecouldn’t have a baby, so we never gaveup,’ says Elaine as she glances at husbandSilven (33) before opening a painfulchapter.12 Get It Zululand December 12The Richards Bay high school sweetheartswere inseparable as teens and surprisedmany when they decided to tie the knot at19 and 20 respectively.In their second year of marriage, thecouple started planning a family andtwo years later, were referred to a fertilityspecialist.‘We tried everything from laparoscopiesto several rounds of intrauterineinsemination, which were not covered bymedical aid.’IVFThe couple then turned to the Care Clinicin Durban in 2005 where they attemptedin-vitro fertilisation (IVF), a procedureunspoken of within Indian circles.‘There is a 45% success rate with IVF. Itwould take me about six months to recoverafter an unsuccessful attempt and then Iwould try again. I couldn’t stop. I could seethe end result.’And it was this determination to have ababy and have time at their disposal to visitout-of-town specialists, which drove Elaineto move from being a litigation secretaryto the more flexible hours of a real estateagent. This resulted in her eventuallypurchasing Seeff Property in Richards Bay.The couple then visited the MedFemFertility Clinic in Sandton in 2009 to pursuethe IVF option once more.‘During this time, we toyed with differentideas, including adoption. But there was alot of red tape with this option.’In 2010 Elaine fell pregnant with twinsbut after 10 weeks she was given thepainful news that her babies had ‘stoppedgrowing’.‘I was absolutely devastated, but I said toSilven – ‘next year this time, we are going tohave a baby’. This is what kept me going.’SurrogacyElaine’s inability to carry to full-termprompted them to consider surrogacy –an option suggested by her sister-in-lawnearly three years ago.Another IVF attempt saw a fertilised eggbeing implanted into her sister-in-lawyielding positive results as she was soonpregnant with twins.Losing one of the babies in the firsttrimester, baby Sven was eventuallydelivered through an emergencycaesarean section after 30 weeks.‘At first we were pushed aside in thehospital. Nobody understood why thereneeded to be four people in the deliveryroom.‘I sang throughout the delivery andrecovery process ‘How great is our God’.Sven could not breathe when he first cameout and then there was a little squeak.’Three weeks later the couple were ableto hold Sven for the first time and Elainenursed her infant daily until he could gohome.‘There are days we pinch ourselvesto ensure we are not dreaming. Svencompletes us. My family and church wereamazing throughout this process. We oweeverything we have to God.’So where to from now - ‘a sister for Sven’says Elaine, as she admits to purchasing apregnancy magazine a week earlier.‘There is no cost to happiness.’
