Chapter 5: E. Measurement Systems 49

Similarly, to convert grams into pounds we use the reverse operation; that is, we

divide the grams by a factor of 453.6. Thus,

907.2 grams = 907.2 ÷ 453.6 = 2 pounds.

To convert units of liquid measure between the English and metric or SI systems,

use the relationships given in Table 5.16. For example, to convert quarts into

liters, the table shows that we multiply the number of quarts by a factor of 0.946.

Thus, for instance, to convert two quarts into liters:

2 quarts = 2 × 0.946 = 1.892 liters

Similarly, to convert liters into quarts we use the reverse operation; that is, we

divide the liters by a factor of 0.946. Thus,

1.892 liters = 1.892 ÷ 0.946 = 2 quarts.

To convert temperature units from Celsius to Fahrenheit, use the relationship

given in Table 5.17. To convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit, the table

shows that we multiply degrees Celsius by 9/5 and then add 32. Thus, for instance,

to convert 20 degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit:

Part I.E

20 20 9

degrees Celsius = × 32 68 degree

+ = sFahrenheit

Recall that zero degrees Celsius converts to 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and that the

boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

To convert temperature units from Fahrenheit to Celsius, use the relationship

given in Table 5.18. To convert degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius, the table

shows that we subtract 32 from degrees Celsius and then divide by 9/5. Thus, for

instance, to convert 68 degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius:

9

68 degrees Fahrenheit = ( 68

32)÷ = 20 degrees Celsius
