Chapter 5: E. Measurement Systems 45

Similarly, to convert square millimeters into square centimeters we use the reverse

operation; that is, we divide the square millimeters by a factor of 100. Thus,

200 square millimeters = 200 ÷ 100 = 2 square centimeters.

To convert volume units within the Metric or SI system, use the relationships given

in Table 5.9. For example, to convert cubic centimeters into cubic millimeters, the

table shows that we multiply the number of cubic centimeters by a factor of 1000.

Thus, for instance, to convert two cubic centimeters into cubic millimeters:

2 cubic centimeters = 2 × 1000 = 2000 cubic millimeters

Similarly, to convert cubic millimeters into cubic centimeters we use the reverse

operation; that is, we divide the cubic millimeters by a factor of 1000. Thus,

2000 cubic millimeters = 2000 ÷ 1000 = 2 cubic centimeters.

To convert mass units within the Metric or SI system, use the relationships given

in Table 5.10. For example, to convert centigrams into milligrams, the table shows

that we multiply the number of centigrams by a factor of 10. Thus, for instance, to

convert two centigrams into milligrams:

2 centigrams = 2 × 10 = 20 milligrams
