About the Authors

H. Fred Walker is dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology at the

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Fred’s research agenda is focused on

enhancing the competitiveness of manufacturers through appropriate technology

and operating practices. In support of his research agenda, Fred has written over

30 refereed articles published in national and international journals. Fred has also

authored or coauthored several books published by ASQ Quality Press, including

The Certified Quality Engineering Handbook, Second Edition, The Certified Quality

Technician Handbook, Applied Statistics for the Six Sigma Green Belt, and Statistical

Quality Control for the Six Sigma Green Belt.

Dr. Walker’s industrial experience includes 12 years with airborne weapons

systems integration and automation, supervision and administration, project

management, and program management in countries throughout the Pacific Rim,

Australia, and Africa. Fred’s consulting experience includes 25 years of continual

involvement with internationally based manufacturers from the semiconductor,

pulp and paper, biomedical equipment, food processing, printing, farm

implement, and machined component industries. This experience has enabled

Fred to earn the following ASQ professional certifications: Manager of Quality/

Operational Excellence, Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, Quality Auditor,

Six Sigma Black Belt, Quality Technician, Quality Inspector, Calibration Technician,

and Quality Improvement Associate.

Ahmad K. Elshennawy is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering

and Management Systems at the University of Central Florida. He received

his PhD and MEng in industrial engineering from Penn State University. He also

holds BS and MS degrees in production engineering from Alexandria University.

His areas of teaching and research interests include quality and reliability engineering,

quality systems and management, statistical control of manufacturing

and service processes, Six Sigma quality, and manufacturing systems. He is a fellow

of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and is an ASQ Certified Quality

Engineer (CQE) and a Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE), and is certified as a

Six Sigma Master Black Belt by the Harrington Institute, USA. He is also a member

of Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Engineering

Honor Society, and Sigma Xi Research Society.

He has taught many short courses and workshops in addition to consulting

in different subjects such as Six Sigma (at all levels), quality improvement, ISO

9000, SPC, quality management, and quality systems, and teaching refresher/
