Body of Knowledge IV.E.1

Part IV.E.1

Protection of employee safety and health while in the workplace is the obligation

of employers. Provisions for employee safety and health are set forth in the

many local, regional, and federal codes and statutes. The Occupational Safety and

Health Administration (OSHA) is responsible for all safety and health regulation.

The primary regulation for safety and health is the OSHA Code of Federal

Regulations (CFR) Title #29. CFR 29 has three (3) major sections, which include

the following:

1910—Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry

1915—Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Shipyard

Employment

1926—Occupational Safety and Health Regulations for Construction

Trades

Where safety and health are concerned, CFR requires that protections be afforded

employees as they relate to the areas identified below. Further, if some form

of employee protection is required, CFR 29 requires that a safety program be

developed and implemented wherein the safety program addresses hazards present,

the selection, maintenance, and use of protections, training of employees, and

program monitoring.

It can not be overemphasized, however, that employees do ultimately bear at

least some responsibility in protecting their personal safety and health while

at work. As a responsible professional, do not take for granted that your safety and

health are protected in the work environment.
